📌 Description

This PR adds allocation-stable, head-chunked Ulysses communication primitives and a benchmark-local compute/communication overlap reference pipeline.

The change has three layers:

  1. Destination-passing and reusable workspaces

    • Adds UlyssesWorkspace and UlyssesCommunicator.create_workspace().
    • Extends scatter_heads() and gather_heads() with optional out= and workspace= arguments.
    • Preserves the existing allocation-based path when neither argument is provided.
  2. Head-chunk layout and transport primitives

    • Adds fused Q/K/V head-band packing and output head-band merging.
    • Adds scatter_qkv_head_chunk() and gather_output_head_chunk() communicator APIs.
    • Supports uneven schedules, positive-stride non-contiguous Q/K/V views, batch sizes 1 and 2, and caller-selected CUDA streams.
    • Adds storage-range alias checks, divisibility checks, int32 payload limits, and explicit workspace lifetime rules.
  3. Reference composition and benchmark

    • Adds a benchmark-local three-stream reference pipeline that overlaps input A2A for chunk N+1, attention for chunk N, and output A2A/merge for chunk N-1.
    • Uses separate input and output process groups/communicators.
    • Benchmarks ordinary Ulysses, whole-QKV fusion, sequential head chunks, and overlapped head chunks.

The framework remains responsible for process-group ownership, model attention semantics, varlen metadata, schedule selection, and feature admission. FlashInfer does not inspect or mutate TP/EP/CP configuration and does not enable head chunking automatically.

Performance and current-head validation

The original RTX PRO 6000 (SM120/PCIe) speedup table was measured before
e782390a changed request-varying Triton divisors and strides from compile-time
to runtime arguments. I have removed it as a current performance claim. Those
measurements remain historical motivation in the design document and will be
promoted again only after the current head is rerun on SM120 hardware.

I reran current head e782390a on a 6× NVIDIA B200 node (SM100, NV18 full
mesh). MiniMax H3 has 56 heads, so U2/U4 are legal but U6 is not. Each row uses
5 warmups and 20 timed iterations in each of three independent processes; the
table reports median-of-run-medians and median paired speedup. These rows use
the custom-NVLink communicator and BF16 PyTorch SDPA.

Physical shape Ulysses Schedule Ordinary Whole QKV Whole speedup Head-chunk overlap Overlap speedup
[1,37760,56,128] 2 [7,14,7] 17.732 ms 19.120 ms 0.927× 18.293 ms 0.974×
[1,37760,56,128] 4 [2,10,2] 8.824 ms 9.261 ms 0.953× 9.173 ms 0.962×
[1,37888,56,128] 2 [7,14,7] 17.735 ms 18.889 ms 0.934× 18.294 ms 0.969×
[1,37888,56,128] 4 [2,10,2] 8.745 ms 9.310 ms 0.939× 9.164 ms 0.956×

All compared outputs had max_abs=0. On this full-NVLink B200 topology, the
ordinary path is the correct admission choice: communication is already short,
and the extra pack/merge, events, and smaller attention launches are not
amortized. This is why the PR provides opt-in primitives and leaves schedule
admission to the framework rather than enabling head chunks automatically.

For context only, a separate local SM100 distributed-FA4 prototype—not code in
this PR—uses symmetric K/V push, remote-Q tile loads inside FA4, and owner-O
scatter in the FA4 epilogue. At the same physical
[1,37888,56,128] work domain it reduced U2 from 18.379 to 16.149 ms (12.13%)
and U4 from 9.266 to 8.182 ms (11.70%). That result supports an
architecture-aware portfolio: share rank-consistent dispatch, workspace
lifetime, and fallback contracts, but contribute the SM100 attention-kernel
fusion as a separate follow-up rather than nesting head chunks around it.

These are operator/reference-pipeline measurements, not model E2E results. The
benchmark in this PR treats the physical sequence as dense; production
integrations remain responsible for varlen and padding semantics.

🚀 Pull Request Checklist

Thank you for contributing to FlashInfer! Before we review your pull request, please make sure the following items are complete.

✅ Pre-commit Checks

  • I have installed pre-commit by running pip install pre-commit (or used your preferred method).
  • I have installed the hooks with pre-commit install.
  • I have run the hooks manually with pre-commit run --all-files and fixed any reported issues.

If you are unsure about how to set up pre-commit, see the pre-commit documentation.

🧪 Tests

  • Tests have been added or updated as needed.
  • All tests are passing (unittest, etc.).

Pre-review validation on RTX PRO 6000:

  • Ruff 0.12.8 format and check on all changed Python files.
  • Python compile and git diff --check.
  • 21 single-GPU layout, validation, workspace, and lifecycle tests.
  • 12 NCCL W2/W3/W4 correctness, destination-passing, head-chunk, stream, and fallback tests.
  • U8 T2V post-rebase performance/correctness regression: 31.115 ms ordinary vs. 26.268 ms overlap (1.184×), with max_abs=0.

Additional review-fix validation on 4× NVIDIA H200 (SM90, NV18 full mesh),
using CUDA 12.9, PyTorch 2.13, Triton 3.7.1, and NCCL 2.29.7:

  • 9 single-GPU head-chunk layout and validation tests.
  • 5 NCCL W2/W4 FP16/BF16 head-chunk and non-default-stream tests.
  • 2 custom-NVLink head-chunk and non-default-stream tests, plus W2/W4
    T2V-shape benchmark correctness.
  • Whole-fused, sequential-chunk, and overlapped-chunk outputs matched ordinary
    Ulysses with max_abs=2.44141e-4 at [1,37760,56,128].

Current-head B200 validation:

  • U2/U4 NCCL and custom-NVLink correctness, plus the current-head performance
table above; every compared output had max_abs=0.
  • Latest tests/comm CI: 13/17 executed jobs passed; the four unexecuted jobs
were reported as infrastructure failures on RTX PRO 6000 and B300, with no
    new test failure classified.

🔬 Experimental Track

  • This PR is experimental: it adds or changes code under flashinfer/experimental/ and/or an @flashinfer_experimental_api. Tracking issue: #
    • The tracking issue names an owner, the reason for the experimental path, and a graduation plan with a target release.
    • Core changes are limited to a thin entry point (signature, shared validation, feature-gate check, backend selection, handoff).
    • Tests live in tests/experimental/ and were validated on the intended hardware; a runnable example is included.
    • Nothing is registered in flashinfer/aot.py, and no experimental backend is reachable from backend="auto" without FLASHINFER_ALLOW_EXPERIMENTAL_AUTO_BACKENDS=1. (Calling an @flashinfer_experimental_api or naming a backend explicitly is itself the opt-in and needs no environment variable.)
    • Test scope declared below. The experimental CI lane runs exactly these targets, so keep them as narrow as the change allows.
# One target per line: a directory or a file. (A pytest ::selector is not
# supported -- the sharding runner cannot consume one.) Must be under

Reviewer Notes

  • The production scheduler and auto-admission policy intentionally remain outside the FlashInfer runtime API; ReferenceHeadChunkPipeline is benchmark-only.
  • One communicator permits at most one in-flight collective. Bidirectional overlap uses independent input/output communicators.
  • The submitted PRO6000 system has no NVLink. Its historical performance is no longer presented as current-head evidence; an SM120 rerun remains required. The custom-NVLink path is functionally validated on H200 and measured on B200, where head chunks are not admitted for the tested shapes.
  • FP8 attention may be composed above these APIs with BF16 communication, but FP8 communication, TP+Ulysses, Ring Attention, Attention2D, and CUDA Graph capture are not enabled by this PR.
  • Remote-Q loading and owner-O scattering inside FA4 are not implemented in this PR; that SM100-specific kernel path belongs in a separate follow-up contribution.
  • Review feedback on whether to keep the benchmark/reference composition in this PR or split it after the reusable workspace and transport primitives is welcome.

The new opt-in head-chunk guidance may allow a performance path selected for one uneven head schedule to be reused for another with different costs. This is a bounded performance-admission documentation risk and should be clarified before broad integration use.

Four items from a pass over the benchmark, the tests, and the Triton layer.

1. The chunk_sequential correctness check reads the overlap result.
In benchmarks/comm/bench_ulysses_head_chunk.py, ReferenceHeadChunkPipeline allocates a single self.output (L141) and both sequential() (L166) and overlap() (L207) return it. At L372-382 both variants run before any comparison, so sequential_result is overlap_result. The overwrite is total, since the schedule's head counts sum to local_heads and the merge covers every band. sequential() runs entirely on the caller's current stream while overlap() drives two side streams plus the caller's stream with events, and the serial loop is the form shown in the docs/api/comm.rst example — so the variant matching the documented usage is the one left unchecked.

2. Side streams are not ordered after the default stream.
tests/comm/test_ulysses_head_chunk.py L96-100 and tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py L650-660 produce inputs and references on the default stream, then read them from a fresh non-blocking torch.cuda.Stream() with no dependency edge; the trailing stream.synchronize() only closes the exit side. The communicator test is the riskier one: expected_q/k/v come from _ref_scatter_heads, i.e. NCCL collectives that run on the process group's internal stream where work.wait() makes only the default stream wait.

3. The Triton kernels specialize dynamic shapes and strides.
In flashinfer/triton/ulysses.py, all three kernels take batch, seq_len/local_seq, chunk_heads and every stride argument as tl.constexpr; the QKV pack and the merge kernel additionally specialize head_offset. All of these enter the compilation cache key. A (3, 8, 3) schedule already produces eight variants across the three kernels, and because batch/seq_len are specialized too, every new sequence length recompiles all of them. For a public API whose inputs are documented as arbitrary [B, S_local, H, D], that puts JIT latency on the critical path for each new resolution or duration, and grows the cache accordingly.

4. Nit: the Triton launchers are unprefixed and unvalidated.
pack_ulysses_qkv_head_chunk, pack_ulysses_output_sequence_chunk and merge_ulysses_output_head_chunk in flashinfer/triton/ulysses.py have no leading underscore but validate nothing — total is derived from query.shape, and the destination's capacity, contiguity and dtype are never checked (merge has only assert world == world_size). Nothing is reachable through the public path: they are not re-exported from flashinfer.comm and their only callers are the comm helpers that already validate. The concern is the API boundary — an unprefixed, unguarded direct import, with two of the three colliding by name with the public flashinfer.comm functions under different signatures.

Thanks for the detailed pass. All four items are addressed in e782390a:

  1. The correctness preflight clones the sequential result before overlap() reuses the pipeline output buffer. The clone is outside every timed path.
  2. Both newly affected side-stream tests explicitly wait on the current/default stream before consuming inputs and NCCL references.
  3. Request-varying resolution, chunk/offset, and stride values are runtime Triton arguments. For two sequence lengths and schedule (3, 8, 3), QKV-pack and merge cache variants each dropped from 6 to 2. Fixed model/topology geometry remains specialized to preserve folded index arithmetic.
  4. The three unchecked Triton launchers are now underscore-prefixed internal functions; the validated flashinfer.comm APIs remain the only public boundary.

Validation was run on a separate 4× H200 (SM90, NV18) node: 9 single-GPU tests, 5 NCCL W2/W4 head-chunk/stream cases, and 2 custom-NVLink cases passed. The H200 evidence is labeled separately in the PR description and does not replace or mix with the original RTX PRO 6000 SM120/PCIe performance table.

The reported performance numbers no longer correspond to the kernels on this branch.

e782390a turns chunk_heads and seq_len/local_seq into runtime arguments, so the source now takes two % / // pairs against runtime divisors on i64 operands where those divisors were compile-time constants:

head_in_chunk = slot % chunk_heads
slot = slot // chunk_heads
seq = slot % seq_len
batch_idx = slot // seq_len

What that costs in generated code is not something the source settles — the backend may fuse each quotient/remainder pair — which is why it needs measuring rather than reasoning about.

The validation reported for that commit covers correctness and the compiled-variant count, not performance. The speedup table in the PR description and the profiling numbers in docs/design_docs/ulysses_head_chunk_primitives.md were all measured against the shape-specialized kernels this commit replaced — including the Nsys attribution of "about 0.6% of GPU kernel time to the three layout kernels", so that cannot settle it either. No current-head performance measurement has been reported.

Rebasing onto main brought in flashinfer-ai#5027, which reworked the collectives this
branch also touches: `out=` became keyword-only on `scatter_heads` and
`gather_heads`, a new `_prepare_out` took over their output validation, and
`UlyssesWorkspace` arrived with `create_workspace` and `_validate_capacity`
beside it.

The capacity rename is the substantive collision, and one git merged cleanly
but wrongly. Both new methods read `self.max_elems`, which this branch had
already turned into `self.max_bytes`, so either would have raised
AttributeError on first use; mypy caught it, the three-way merge did not. The
workspace keeps its element-count interface, so the conversion happens once at
that boundary -- exact, because both callers pin their operands to the
communicator dtype before asking.

`exchange_chunks` now takes `out` keyword-only as well, so the three
collectives agree. `_prepare_out` subsumes what `_validate_out` and
`_validate_no_overlap` did for the NVLink and NCCL paths, including a
deliberate allowance for `out is x` at world size 1; the PCIe path keeps its
own pair, which additionally check the per-call dtype. The overlap test
follows `_prepare_out`'s wording.

…mark and export example

Rebasing onto main brought in four callers that construct the communicator
with the pre-rename `max_elems=` keyword: `_destination_passing_body` and
`_head_chunk_body` (flashinfer-ai#5027), `benchmarks/comm/bench_ulysses_head_chunk.py`
(flashinfer-ai#5027) and `examples/pytorch/ulysses_a2a_export/interface.py` (flashinfer-ai#5263). The
constructor takes `max_bytes` only, so the eight multi-rank cases behind
those bodies raised TypeError on any host with two or more GPUs, and the
benchmark and the export example could not start. Convert the element
counts to bytes at the construction dtype; `create_workspace(max_elems=...)`
keeps its element-count interface for the staging buffers.

…ti-rank PCIe backend

flashinfer-ai#5027 added `create_workspace`, `workspace=` on the head collectives and the
`scatter_qkv_head_chunk` / `gather_output_head_chunk` primitives, all built
on NCCL send/receive staging buffers. None of them knew about the PCIe
backend: a multi-rank PCIe communicator silently dropped `workspace=`, let
`create_workspace` fail with the workspace's own dtype message for a PCIe-only
dtype, and ran the two head-chunk primitives straight through the NCCL
staging path over a group that was never checked for CUDA all-to-all.

The PCIe transport moves whole registered outputs and has no staging
buffers, so reject all four entry points with a message that names
`allocate_output()`. The head-chunk and workspace refusals are deterministic
capability errors raised before any collective work; a `workspace=` handed
to a PCIe collective is a caller error inside that collective's failure
envelope, like a bad shape. World size one keeps its identity path.

…RMSNorm + RoPE overlapped with the Ulysses head exchange (SM90 / SM100 / SM103) (#6332)

## 📌 Description

Part of #4254. Implements the overlap requested in #6304 (assumptions
stated below where the issue thread has not confirmed a choice).

Adds `flashinfer.comm.QkvNormRopeExchangeOverlap`: one prepared session
that fuses the attention front end of a
sequence-parallel (Ulysses) layer — the BF16 QKV projection, per-head
RMSNorm of Q and K, interleaved RoPE from a
per-token cos/sin table, and the head exchange — into a single call per
layer. The Cake backend stores every
destination's head band straight from the GEMM epilogue into that rank's
symmetric receive slot over NVLink and
publishes per-chunk readiness words, so the exchange overlaps the
projection instead of following it; a one-CTA wait
kernel on a consumer stream acquires the words and the caller's stream
joins it.

* Architectures: SM90 (WGMMA producer), SM100 and SM103 (tcgen05
producer; 2-CTA pair tile for `block_n = 256` and
rows of at least 4096 tokens). Single-node NVLink groups of 2, 4 or 8
ranks, `head_dim = 128`, BF16 operands,
  fp32 cos/sin table.
* Layouts: `"bshd"` returns `(q, k, v)` views of `[B, S_global, H_local,
D]`; `"fused"` returns one
`[B, S_global, H_local, 3 * D]` payload. Outputs are views of the
current receive slot and stay valid until the
slot is reused `num_slots` calls later; `out=` copies into caller-owned
tensors.
* Backend selection: `backend="auto"` goes through
`resolve_ulysses_backend` (NVLink mesh probe) and the device
capability; otherwise the NCCL path (cuBLAS projection,
`flashinfer.norm.rmsnorm`, RoPE,
`UlyssesCommunicator.scatter_qkv_head_chunk`). `backend="nvlink"` raises
`UlyssesBackendError` when the mesh or the
architecture is not supported; the NCCL path reports `graph_capturable
== False`.
* CUDA graphs: a prepared call allocates nothing and runs no host
collective; captured calls publish a sentinel
epoch and clear their readiness words with a stream memset after the
wait kernel, so replays interleave with
eager calls. A call with more rows than `max_tokens`, or a row count
first seen inside a capture, raises instead of
allocating. At most `num_slots` calls of one session can be captured
into one graph without an eager call between.
* `heads % world_size != 0` raises `ValueError` deterministically on
every rank before any collective (same
  contract as `UlyssesCommunicator.scatter_heads`).

### Assumptions (open points in #6304)

The issue thread has not yet confirmed the following choices; this PR
implements the defaults below and labels them
here so reviewers and the requester can object:

* **Exchange algorithm**: Ulysses-style QKV all-to-all (each rank holds
a token shard and the full QKV weight; every
rank receives its head band of all tokens). Ring-style KV exchange is
out of scope.
* **Operator math**: the public FLUX definitions — fp32 RMSNorm with
`eps = 1e-6` and a shared `[head_dim]` weight per
Q / K, interleaved (pairwise) RoPE applied in fp32 from a per-token
cos/sin table, in the order projection → QK-norm →
RoPE; BF16 operands and outputs (no FP8 producer).
* **Receive layout**: both the `(q, k, v)` `[B, S_global, H_local, D]`
views and the fused `[B*S_global, 3*H_local*D]`
payload are supported; the numbers below are measured with the `bshd`
layout on every architecture.
* **Tolerance**: `atol = rtol = 1e-2` against an fp32 step-by-step
reference. Isolated single-ulp BF16 differences
(a value landing on the other side of a BF16 rounding boundary after a
different fp32 accumulation order, max_abs
0.03125) occur both in this kernel and in the existing per-operator
path; the tests classify those elements explicitly
  instead of loosening the tolerance.

## 🚀 Pull Request Checklist

Thank you for contributing to FlashInfer! Before we review your pull
request, please make sure the following items are complete.

### ✅ Pre-commit Checks

- [x] I have installed `pre-commit` by running `pip install pre-commit`
(or used your preferred method).
- [ ] I have installed the hooks with `pre-commit install`.
- [x] I have run the hooks manually with `pre-commit run --all-files`
and fixed any reported issues.

> If you are unsure about how to set up `pre-commit`, see [the
pre-commit documentation](https://pre-commit.com/).

The hooks were run as `pre-commit run --files <the 31 files changed by
this PR>` with the hook versions pinned in `.pre-commit-config.yaml`
(unchanged by this PR); all 12 hooks pass, including clang-format, mypy,
ruff check and ruff format.

## 🧪 Tests

- [x] Tests have been added or updated as needed.
- [ ] All tests are passing (`unittest`, etc.).

Every path is checked against an fp32 step-by-step reference
(projection, RMSNorm with the bf16 cast before the
bf16 scale, interleaved RoPE, bf16 output) redistributed with
`all_gather`, `atol = rtol = 1e-2`, on both layouts
including a tail row count (`S_local = 200`), after CUDA-graph replays
with fresh inputs, with two sessions in flight on
one group, and on the NCCL path. The multi-GPU tests spawn 2, 4 and 8
ranks on one node and skip on fewer devices or
an unsupported architecture.

The host-only tests of
`tests/comm/test_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py` (`-k "not
multi_gpu"`, 21 passed) ran on the pre-check node; the 2-, 4- and 8-GPU
tests need a multi-GPU node and are left to CI.

### Test plan

- [ ] `pytest tests/comm/test_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py -q` on
an 8-GPU SM100 node
- [ ] same on an 8-GPU SM103 node
- [ ] same on an 8-GPU SM90 node
- [ ] `torchrun --standalone --nproc-per-node=8
benchmarks/comm/bench_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py --rows
representative --json bench_w8.json` per architecture
- [x] `pre-commit run --files <new files>` (31 files; 12 / 12 hooks
pass)

## 🔬 Experimental Track

<!-- Only for PRs submitted under the experimental policy
(CONTRIBUTING.md → "Experimental APIs and Backends").
Leave this section untouched for normal PRs. -->

- [ ] This PR is **experimental**: it adds or changes code under
`flashinfer/experimental/` and/or an `@flashinfer_experimental_api`.
Tracking issue: #
- [ ] The tracking issue names an owner, the reason for the experimental
path, and a graduation plan with a target release.
- [ ] Core changes are limited to a thin entry point (signature, shared
validation, feature-gate check, backend selection, handoff).
- [ ] Tests live in `tests/experimental/` and were validated on the
intended hardware; a runnable example is included.
- [ ] Nothing is registered in `flashinfer/aot.py`, and no experimental
backend is reachable from `backend="auto"` without
`FLASHINFER_ALLOW_EXPERIMENTAL_AUTO_BACKENDS=1`. (Calling an
`@flashinfer_experimental_api` or naming a backend explicitly is itself
the opt-in and needs no environment variable.)
- [ ] **Test scope declared below.** The experimental CI lane runs
exactly these targets, so keep them as narrow as the change allows.

<!-- Required for experimental PRs. Replace the commented lines below
with your targets.
Do not delete the fence or change its `experimental-tests` tag — the
experimental-track
watcher reads it verbatim to decide which targets to ask CI for. -->

## Reviewer Notes

- The device and binding translation units under
`csrc/cake_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap/` are generated and attested
by content hash; the host path
(`flashinfer/comm/qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`,
`cake_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`, `cake_qkv_exchange_plan.py`),
the JIT loader and the tests are hand-written and are the parts to read
first.
- The Speedup section separates the benchmark table from the
export-protocol receipts; rows that failed the protocol's validity gates
(power-capped clocks) are listed, not reported as measured.

## Speedup

Measured with `benchmarks/comm/bench_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`
(CUPTI activity timing, cold L2, per-rank
maximum then median; `--rows representative`) against the fastest
per-operator path on the same node. The
per-operator baselines are: B1 three `scatter_heads` collectives, B2 one
`scatter_qkv_head_chunk` over the whole head
band, B3 the default head-chunk schedule, B4
`ulysses_a2a_in(fuse_qkv=True)` over NCCL. On SM90 the Ulysses
communicator of B1-B3 runs on its NCCL backend (the NVLink Ulysses
kernels target SM100 / SM103).

### Measured speedup (72 rows per architecture)

Grid: `W ∈ {2, 4, 8}` ranks on one node × `hidden ∈ {3072, 4096, 6144,
8192}` (`head_dim = 128`) × `S_global ∈ {4096 … 131072}`,
`B = 1`, BF16. Each row was timed on one 8-GPU node with CUPTI activity
tracing (cold L2, per-rank maximum then median,
five A/B/B/A rounds of ten samples, an A/A control arm within ±1 % or
the row was re-measured) against the fastest of
the four per-operator paths above measured in the same process. speedup
= fastest baseline / fused. Every measured row is
faster than its fastest baseline.

| GPU | rows faster than the fastest baseline | geometric mean
(A/A-valid rows) | W = 8 / 4 / 2 | minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B200 (SM100) | 72 / 72 | 1.831 | 1.824 / 1.849 / 1.820 | 1.261 |
| B300 (SM103) | 72 / 72 | 1.906 | 1.911 / 1.891 / 1.916 | 1.241 |
| H100 (SM90) | 71 / 71 | 1.332 | 1.339 / 1.348 / 1.310 | 1.135 |

Notes: on B300 the row `W = 4, hidden 3072, S_global 8192` (2.26–2.31×
in three measurements) exceeded the ±1 % A/A
control in all three and is excluded from the geometric mean; on H100
(80 GB) the row `W = 2, hidden 8192,
S_global 131072` does not fit in device memory with the reference and
baseline buffers and is not measured.

### Export-protocol validation (per-row receipts, three architectures)

Independently of the table above, every row was re-measured by the
export protocol that produced the generated
sources in this PR: same CUPTI method (cold L2, per-rank maximum then
median, counterbalanced A/B/B/A groups), the
generated programs loaded through this PR's JIT path, the four
per-operator baselines measured in the same process,
plus the validity gates per row (source/export agreement >= 0.95,
directional disagreement <= 0.12, endpoint
drift <= 0.15, loaded SM clock >= 50 % of the maximum boost clock). A
row counts only when all gates pass.

**Protocol change (2026-10-11): loaded-SM-clock floor 0.60 -> 0.50.**
The floor used to be 0.60. At the largest
`W = 2 / 4, S_global = 131072` rows the B200 (1000 W) and B300 (1100 W)
board power limits hold the loaded SM clock
at 0.48 - 0.60 of the maximum on every node tried (five nodes per SKU,
three rounds), so those rows were rejected
unconditionally. The floor is now 0.50; the directional, drift and
source gates are unchanged. Every previously
accepted row was measured under the stricter 0.60 floor and remains
valid as measured; under the relaxed floor one
further row was accepted (`corr_w2_max` on B300, a correctness row). The
rows that still fail are listed below.

| GPU | perf rows with a valid receipt | all valid rows faster than the
fastest baseline | geometric mean (W = 8 / 4 / 2) | minimum | rows
without a valid receipt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B200 (SM100) | 69 / 72 | yes | 1.686 (1.535 / 1.716 / 1.832) | 1.170 |
3 |
| B300 (SM103) | 69 / 72 | yes | 1.700 (1.511 / 1.737 / 1.889) | 1.109 |
3 |
| H100 (SM90) | 70 / 72 | yes | 1.306 (1.296 / 1.319 / 1.301) | 1.093 |
2 |

Correctness / negative rows of the export protocol (13 per GPU,
including the largest-shape correctness row
`corr_w2_max`): H100 13 / 13, B300 13 / 13, B200 12 / 13 (`corr_w2_max`
reads 0.496 and 0.492 of the maximum clock
on two nodes, below the 0.50 floor; its correctness is covered by the
harness correctness table above).

Rows without a valid receipt (disclosed, not counted; the raw ratio of
an invalid attempt is not a measurement):

| GPU | W | hidden | S_global | why the receipt is invalid | attempts
(nodes) | raw ratio of the last attempt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

endpoint drift 0.30 / 0.22 and B2 directional disagreement > 0.12 | 4 (3
nodes) | 1.37 - 1.69 |
| B200 | 4 | 8192 | 131072 | rounds 1 - 2: loaded SM clock below the 60
% floor (960 / 1177 MHz); round 3: B1 directional disagreement > 0.12 |

| H100 | 2 | 8192 | 131072 | does not fit in 80 GB with the reference
and the four baseline arms (not measurable) | - | - |

The largest shapes run power-capped on the B200 / B300 nodes available
for this work (clocks at 48 - 60 % of the
maximum boost); once the clock floor no longer rejects them, the order
effect between the baseline arms (each tens of
milliseconds, with power-state transitions between arms) exceeds the
0.12 directional gate on every node tried. The
per-operator table above measured those rows on other nodes of the same
type, where the row
`W = 2, hidden 8192, S_global 131072` reached 23 ms vs 28.9 ms. The
export protocol is not relaxed further for them;
they are listed here rather than reported as measured.

## 📌 Description

Adds `UlyssesCommunicator(backend="pcie")`: an experimental single-node
all-to-all transport for PCIe-connected GPU groups without NVLink (e.g.
8x RTX PRO 5000), targeting Ulysses sequence parallelism in video/image
diffusion serving. Being experimental, it is reachable from
`backend="auto"` only where NVLink is unavailable and
`FLASHINFER_ALLOW_EXPERIMENTAL_AUTO_BACKENDS=1` is set identically on
every rank; naming it explicitly never needs that variable. Either way
it warns once.

**Why.** The existing NVLink backend lets SM threads store into
peer-visible staging buffers; across a PCIe host bridge that degenerates
into small transactions (measured 5-13x slower than copy engines during
bring-up, see `docs/design_docs/ulysses_pcie.md`). NCCL works but leaves
bandwidth and stability on the table on this fabric (see numbers below).

**What.**

- Routes: world size 1 is an identity path; 2 uses all-pairs CUDA P2P
copy engines (`cudaMemcpy2DAsync` writes land directly in the peer's
final layout, no pack/unpack); 4/8 prefer an all-RDMA route (per-rank
mlx5 RC QP, interleaved-UMR MKeys, GPUDirect RDMA) and fall back to
all-P2P with a `RuntimeWarning`; an eight-rank 4+4 NUMA hybrid
(same-NUMA P2P, cross-NUMA mlx5) is available via
`FLASHINFER_ULYSSES_PCIE_ROUTE`.
- Transforms: `scatter_heads` / `gather_heads` interleave the head axis;
`exchange_chunks` takes `[1, 1, world_size, chunk]` to the same shape
(`all_to_all_single` over a payload a preceding pack already laid out
destination-major) and interleaves nothing. On the RDMA routes it
configures no MKey, which is what frees it from the 16-bit `bytes_count`
that caps the head-axis transforms at 65535 B per peer.
- Synchronization: full-group epoch barriers in device memory
(release/acquire, sticky abort half for the RDMA routes); the all-P2P
route is CUDA-graph capturable, the RDMA routes refuse capture and bound
NIC stalls with a 10 s deadline plus a group-wide abort/quiesce
protocol.
- Lifecycle: explicit `allocate_output` registration (collective, lives
until `close()`); `input_buffer()` exposes the RDMA landing buffer so
producers can write operands where the NIC reads them, removing the
largest device-to-device copy on the path (measured ~6% per call at
layer scale). The backend has no staging workspaces: `workspace=`,
`create_workspace` and the head-chunk primitives from #5027 are refused
at world size above one with a message that names `allocate_output()`.
- Failure envelope: a rejection before native code runs (bad operand,
refused capture, second stream) is decided from the call's own
arguments, so under the SPMD contract every rank rejects it -- the RDMA
routes raise the ordinary error and stay usable, the all-P2P route (no
abort protocol) poisons teardown and enters BROKEN. A failure inside the
transport is fail-stop on every route: on the RDMA routes the failing
rank publishes the sticky abort, the peers leave the barrier and
`close()` completes; on all-P2P `close()` refuses to synchronize and the
process must exit. The design note has the table.
- The element type is per-call (`dtype=` on the collectives), decoupled
from the communicator: the transport moves opaque bytes, so FP8/INT8
payloads ride a BF16-sized communicator within the same byte budget. The
constructor's capacity is therefore `max_bytes`, replacing main's
element-count `max_elems`: the other communication workspaces in
`flashinfer.comm` are sized in bytes as well (`buffer_size_in_bytes`,
`workspace_size`), and an element count has no single meaning once the
element type varies per call. #4924 already targets `max_bytes`. The
staging-buffer API from #5027 (`UlyssesWorkspace(max_elems=...)`,
`create_workspace(max_elems=...)`) keeps its element count, since those
buffers hold one dtype.
- Docs: design note (`docs/design_docs/ulysses_pcie.md`),
`docs/api/comm.rst`, env-var reference; fi_trace templates for all three
transforms (`scatter_heads` / `gather_heads` gain `trace=` decorators).
- Housekeeping: six `flashinfer.comm` re-exports of JIT module helpers
with no users in the repository (`gen_trtllm_comm_module`,
`gen_vllm_comm_module`, `gen_pcie_ipc_comm_module`,
`get_pcie_ipc_comm_module`, `gen_ulysses_a2a_module`,
`get_ulysses_a2a_module`) are dropped; the helpers stay importable from
their own modules and from `flashinfer.jit`.

**Changes since the approved revision (a481f1d).** The branch was
rebased onto main (#5027 workspace API, #5263 generated NVLink kernels)
and the following landed on top, in this order:

1. `fix(comm): finish the max_bytes rename in the head-chunk tests,
benchmark and export example` -- four `max_elems=` constructor calls
that arrived with #5027 / #5263 (`_destination_passing_body`,
`_head_chunk_body`, `bench_ulysses_head_chunk.py`,
`examples/pytorch/ulysses_a2a_export/interface.py`) raised `TypeError`
on any 2+ GPU host.
2. `format: format code style by pre-commit` -- the two hooks CI
flagged.
3. `test(comm): share the Ulysses test helpers and gloo fixture` -- one
FileStore `gloo_pg` fixture in `tests/comm/conftest.py`, `full_mesh` /
`forbid_ipc_and_jit` / rendezvous helpers in
`tests/test_helpers/ulysses.py`.
4. `fix(comm): check the group's CUDA all-to-all support before arming
NVLink` -- the check ran only for `backend="nccl"`, after the NVLink IPC
exports were armed.
5. `fix(comm): reject cross-rank FLASHINFER_ULYSSES_PCIE_NICS
disagreement` -- the NIC override is now compared across ranks like the
route and GID overrides.
6. `feat(comm): warn at garbage collection when a Ulysses communicator
was not closed` -- `ResourceWarning` from `__del__` for an armed
communicator; no teardown from the finalizer.
7. `fix(comm): refuse workspaces and the head-chunk primitives on the
multi-rank PCIe backend` -- see Lifecycle above.
8. `fix(comm): publish the abort when the RDMA routes reject an operand
natively` -- the RDMA routes' per-call operand checks run inside the
native abort envelope, so a rank whose operand native rejects releases
its peers instead of leaving them in the opening barrier (the only
native change: the checks moved into `ValidateExchangeOperands`,
protocol and wire format untouched); the caller's stream is bound only
after a call passes validation; the Python-side envelope is unchanged
and documented.
9. `refactor(comm): route Ulysses output validation through the shared
helpers` -- `_output_geometry` is the single source of the output shape;
the overlap test reuses `_storage_ranges_overlap`.
10. `docs(comm): update Ulysses PCIe prose for auto selection, the
failure envelope and follow-ups`.
11. Rebased onto main 28ae778 (2026-09-24). The only conflict was
`flashinfer/trace/templates/comm.py`, where #4929 and this PR both
append templates at the end of the file; both blocks are kept, in main's
order, and no other file changed in the rebase.
12. Merged main `7bcf91831` (2026-09-29): three additive conflicts
(`flashinfer/aot.py`, `flashinfer/comm/__init__.py`,
`tests/trace/template_registry.py`), both sides kept. Followed by `Find
Conda rdma-core build inputs for PCIe Ulysses JIT` (72c958a):
`gen_ulysses_pcie_module` adds `<sys.prefix>/include` and
`-L<sys.prefix>/lib` when `infiniband/mlx5dv.h` / `libmlx5.so` live
there (the CI Conda environment), and
`missing_ulysses_pcie_dependencies()` now also probes for the
`infiniband/verbs.h` / `infiniband/mlx5dv.h` headers (one host-mock test
added; design note updated).
13. Merged main `7aa42e2dc` (2026-10-04). Two additive conflicts:
`scripts/task_test_multi_gpu_comm_kernels.sh` (both sides extend
`SPAWN_MANAGED_TEST_FILES`; the union is kept) and
`tests/trace/example.py` (main sorted the `flashinfer.*` imports;
`import flashinfer.comm` takes its place in that order). `CLAUDE.md`,
`docs/api/comm.rst`, `flashinfer/aot.py` and
`tests/trace/test_fi_trace_template_consistency.py` merged
automatically. No file under `flashinfer/comm/ulysses*`,
`flashinfer/jit/comm.py`, `csrc/ulysses*`,
`include/flashinfer/comm/ulysses_pcie.cuh` or `tests/comm/test_ulysses*`
changed on main between the two bases.
14. Merged main `188bdd769` (2026-10-05). Two modify/delete conflicts:
#5953 removed `examples/pytorch/ulysses_a2a_export/` and moved its
fixture to `tests/comm/cake_ulysses_a2a_fixture.py`, so the deletion is
taken and the `max_bytes` rename from item 1 is re-applied to the moved
fixture in `fix(comm): finish the max_bytes rename in the moved cake
Ulysses fixture` (57ed509); `docs/api/comm.rst` and `flashinfer/aot.py`
merged automatically. No file under `flashinfer/comm/ulysses*`,
`flashinfer/jit/comm.py`, `csrc/ulysses*`,
`include/flashinfer/comm/ulysses_pcie.cuh` or `tests/comm/test_ulysses*`
changed on main between the two bases.
15. Rebased onto main `9c6797eda` (2026-10-05) at the maintainers'
convenience for a linear history: the 28 non-merge commits above replay
in order and the five merge commits (1f82831, 25bb39c, f7ce2ba,
5e8919a and their resolutions) are gone; `8668d921` is the new head.
The replay re-resolved the same conflicts
(`flashinfer/comm/__init__.py`, `flashinfer/aot.py`,
`tests/trace/example.py`, `tests/trace/template_registry.py`,
`scripts/task_test_multi_gpu_comm_kernels.sh`, the removed example
files), and the result differs from the merged head `57ed5097` in
exactly one place: `flashinfer/comm/__init__.py` no longer re-exports
`gen_pcie_ipc_comm_module` / `get_pcie_ipc_comm_module`, which the merge
in item 12 had brought back by accident; this is the drop described
under Housekeeping, and the repository has no caller of either name
through `flashinfer.comm`.
16. Rebased onto main `67c190f7d` (2026-10-06); `0f60c090` is the new
head, still 28 linear commits. One conflict: the expected-output list in
`tests/trace/example.py`'s docstring, where #6035 appended the
`moe_layer_cudnn_frost_*` entries at the spot this PR appends the
`ulysses_*` entries; both lists are kept, in main's order. `CLAUDE.md`,
`flashinfer/aot.py` and `tests/trace/template_registry.py` merged
automatically. No file under `flashinfer/comm/ulysses*`,
`flashinfer/jit/comm.py`, `csrc/ulysses*`,
`include/flashinfer/comm/ulysses_pcie.cuh` or `tests/comm/test_ulysses*`
changed on main between the two bases.
17. Rebased onto main `87ef73934` (2026-10-14); `e7c7bbd50` is the new
head, 29 linear commits. One conflict: the tail of
`tests/trace/example.py`, where #5304 appended its `top_k_varlen`
example calls at the spot this PR appends the single-rank Ulysses block;
both are kept, in main's order (the docstring's expected-output list
merged automatically this time). `CLAUDE.md`, `docs/api/comm.rst`,
`flashinfer/aot.py`, `flashinfer/comm/__init__.py`,
`scripts/task_test_multi_gpu_comm_kernels.sh` and
`tests/trace/template_registry.py` merged automatically. #6332
(`flashinfer/comm/qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py` and
`benchmarks/comm/bench_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`) arrived on
main with three `UlyssesCommunicator(..., max_elems=...)` calls, so the
29th commit, `fix(comm): finish the max_bytes rename in the QKV
norm/RoPE exchange overlap`, passes `max_bytes` (the same bf16 element
counts times `torch.bfloat16.itemsize`) exactly as item 14 did for the
moved fixture; nothing else on main constructs a communicator with the
old keyword. No file under `flashinfer/comm/ulysses*`,
`flashinfer/jit/comm.py`, `csrc/ulysses*`,
`include/flashinfer/comm/ulysses_pcie.cuh`, `tests/comm/test_ulysses*`
or `flashinfer/trace/templates/comm.py` changed on main between the two
bases.
18. Rebased onto main `3637083a3` (2026-10-15); `f0ff368c1` is the new
head, still 29 linear commits, no conflicts: #5701 extends
`TORCHRUN_TEST_FILES` in `scripts/task_test_multi_gpu_comm_kernels.sh`
next to the `SPAWN_MANAGED_TEST_FILES` line this PR extends, and both
land. The base now includes #6509, the fix for the
`tests/moe_ep/test_sm107_torch_staging.py` failure that was the only
failing lane in this PR's 2026-10-15 CI run (unrelated to this PR, which
touches no `moe_ep` file). No file under `flashinfer/comm/ulysses*`,
`flashinfer/jit/comm.py`, `csrc/ulysses*`,
`include/flashinfer/comm/ulysses_pcie.cuh`, `tests/comm/test_ulysses*`
or `flashinfer/trace/templates/comm.py` changed on main between the two
bases.

**Performance** (8x RTX PRO 5000, dual-NUMA 4+4, PCIe Gen5 x16, one 400G
mlx5 per GPU; `benchmarks/comm/bench_ulysses_pcie.py`, seq 37888 / heads
56 / head_dim 128 / bf16; median of host-clock loops, max-reduced across
ranks, vs the `all_to_all_single`+permute reference; PCIe-side sd ≤ 8%,
mostly < 1%, while the NCCL reference jitters up to 50-104% at eight
ranks):

| world | route (auto's pick in bold) | scatter | gather | qkv layer |
per-rank remote BW |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | **all-P2P** | 2.02x | 2.00x | 2.01x | 50.5 GB/s |
| 4 | **all-RDMA** | 1.97x | 1.97x | 1.97x | 42.3 GB/s |
| 8 | **all-RDMA** | 1.49x | 1.43x | 1.48x | 42.6 GB/s |
| 8 | 4+4 hybrid | — | — | 1.27x | 36.4 GB/s |
| 8 | all-P2P (correctness fallback) | 0.81x | 0.43x | 0.30x | 8.8 GB/s
|

The transport moves opaque bytes, so the element type should change how
long a call
takes but not how fast the link runs. Same node, ws8 all-RDMA, seq 37888
/ 56 heads /
head_dim 128, only the dtype varies:

| dtype | bytes/elem | scatter ms | qkv layer ms | remote BW (scatter) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| bf16 | 2 | 1.389 | 5.583 | 42.8 GB/s |
| fp8_e4m3fn | 1 | 0.695 | 2.871 | 42.7 GB/s |
| int8 | 1 | 0.696 | 2.870 | 42.7 GB/s |

Halving the element size halves the time (1.389 -> 0.695 ms) and leaves
bandwidth put;
the two 1-byte types are within noise of each other. ws2 P2P saturates
~95% of the
effective Gen5 x16 link; the RDMA route reaches ~85% of the 400G NIC.

Re-measured at this head on the same node (ws8 all-RDMA, same shapes, 5
trials x 200 iterations, other tenants idle) to confirm the round
changed nothing on the hot path: scatter 1.427 ms at 41.6 GB/s remote
bandwidth (table above: 1.389 ms / 42.8 GB/s), gather 1.554 ms at 38.2
GB/s, both with trial-to-trial sd below 2%; the q/k/v layer loop read
6.93 ms with sd 9.2%, which is inside its own noise band on a shared
node and is not re-plotted here. The `rnr_nak_retry_err` counters on all
eight NICs did not move during the run.

**Limitations.** Experimental; single host; world sizes 1/2/4/8 (the
copy scheduler's `rank ^ step` order needs powers of two); the RDMA
routes require batch 1 and refuse CUDA-graph capture, and bound the
head-axis transforms at head-row pitch `H*D*elem <= 65535` B
(`exchange_chunks` registers no MKey and is not bounded); the JIT module
links libibverbs/libmlx5 even when topology picks all-P2P, so it is
JIT-only and deliberately absent from AOT; a transport failure is
fail-stop as described above, and an all-P2P failure leaves the process
to be terminated by the launcher. Validated on one topology (4+4 NUMA,
one mlx5 per GPU); no work-request-level mlx5 unit tests yet — the RDMA
data path is covered end to end. No CI lane exercises the PCIe wire path
(the CI images carry no rdma-core and the GPU lanes are single-GPU); the
host-mock and single-rank halves of the suite run there, the multi-rank
half runs on the reference node.

Planned follow-ups, prepared on a branch and deliberately kept out of
this PR to leave the approved protocol untouched: publish the abort from
Python on every route (the all-P2P route already imports every peer's
signal buffer), so a Python-side rejection on a rank that broke the SPMD
contract releases the peers too; publish a geometry word with the
opening epoch so ranks that call with different shapes at the same
position break the group instead of writing a misdescribed layout; post
the RDMA receive before the opening barrier (closes the window in which
a peer's write can arrive before the receive is posted; no RNR retries
were counted during this round's benchmark, so this is hygiene rather
than a measured stall); build the all-P2P route without rdma-core;
`out=None` with lazy registration; per-output `capacity_bytes`.

## 🧪 Tests

- [x] Tests have been added or updated as needed.
- [x] All tests are passing (`unittest`, etc.).

Ran on the 8-GPU reference node (8x RTX PRO 5000, dual-NUMA 4+4, one
mlx5 per GPU, rdma-core 63, CUDA 13.4, torch 2.13) with all eight GPUs
at `ef9a91a22`, the head before the rebase (2026-09-20):
`tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 132 passed / 22 skipped / 0
failed, `tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed / 0 skipped
(244 passed / 22 skipped in one run),
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed. The 22 skips are the
forced-NVLink family on this NVLink-less machine; every PCIe case ran
(p2p, all-RDMA and 4+4 hybrid routes at world sizes 2/4/8, the chunk
exchange, the landing-buffer producer path, the p2p fail-stop pair, and
the two-rank RDMA case in which rank 0's native dtype rejection
publishes the abort, rank 1 leaves the barrier with "peer 0 aborted the
exchange", and both ranks close). Correctness is bit-exact against the
`all_gather`-based reference for fp16/bf16/fp32 and byte-exact for
int8/uint8/fp8 across all three routes, including non-power-of-two head
dims on the UMR path, CUDA-graph capture+replay of a q/k/v/out layer on
the P2P route, and `backend="auto"` with the experimental opt-in
selecting PCIe on this node.

Re-run after the rebase at the pushed head `4fec510aa` (2026-09-24) on
the same node, which was shared with another tenant on GPUs 0-3, so the
suite ran on GPUs 4-7 (`CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=4,5,6,7`):
`tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 122 passed / 32 skipped / 0
failed, `tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed,
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed. The skips are the
forced-NVLink family plus the world-size-8 cases (all-RDMA and the 4+4
hybrid at eight ranks), which need eight visible GPUs; every world-size
2/4 case ran (p2p and all-RDMA routes, the chunk exchange, the
landing-buffer producer path, the fail-stop pairs). The eight-rank paths
stand on the run above: no file under `flashinfer/comm/ulysses*`,
`csrc/ulysses*` or `tests/comm/test_ulysses*` changed on main between
the two bases, and the rebase touched only the trace template file.

Re-run after the 2026-10-04 merge at `25bb39c4` on the same node, first
on GPUs 4-7 while GPUs 0-3 were held by another tenant
(`tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 123 passed / 32 skipped),
then on all eight GPUs once they freed up:
`tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 133 passed / 22 skipped / 0
failed, `tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed,
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed; `pre-commit run
--from-ref origin/main --to-ref HEAD` is green,
`scripts/check_pr_document.py` reports no findings and
`scripts/check_pr_api_diff.py` only the `max_bytes` advisory. The 22
skips are the forced-NVLink family; every PCIe case ran, including the
eight-rank all-RDMA and 4+4 hybrid routes. The head `f7ce2baf` on top
merges main `4b6d64be` (#6040, `cake_selective_state_update` only) and
touches no Ulysses file.

Re-run after the 2026-10-05 merge at the pushed head `57ed5097` on the
same node with all eight GPUs: `tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py`
133 passed / 22 skipped / 0 failed,
`tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed,
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed, and
`tests/comm/test_cake_ulysses_a2a.py` + `tests/comm/test_ulysses_a2a.py`
+ `tests/comm/test_ulysses_head_chunk.py` 16 passed / 4 skipped (the
generated NVLink portfolio skips on this SM120 node; the moved fixture
was additionally exercised by constructing its communicator with
`max_bytes` in a one-rank process). The skips are the forced-NVLink
family. `pre-commit run --from-ref <main> --to-ref HEAD` is green.

Re-run at the rebased head `8668d921` on the same node with all eight
GPUs: `tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 133 passed / 22 skipped
/ 0 failed, `tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed,
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed,
`tests/comm/test_cake_ulysses_a2a.py` + `tests/comm/test_ulysses_a2a.py`
+ `tests/comm/test_ulysses_head_chunk.py` 16 passed / 4 skipped, and the
pcie_ipc module tests that import the JIT helpers from
`flashinfer.comm.pcie_ipc_ar` still pass; `pre-commit run --from-ref
<main> --to-ref HEAD` is green.

Re-run at the rebased head `0f60c090` on the same node (all eight GPUs
for the communicator suite, GPUs 0-3 for the rest while another tenant
held GPU 6): `tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 133 passed / 22
skipped / 0 failed, `tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed,
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed,
`tests/comm/test_cake_ulysses_a2a.py` + `tests/comm/test_ulysses_a2a.py`
+ `tests/comm/test_ulysses_head_chunk.py` 15 passed / 5 skipped,
pcie_ipc module tests pass; `pre-commit run --from-ref <main> --to-ref
HEAD` is green.

On a single-GPU host the same files give 186 passed / 90 skipped
(host-mock and single-rank halves), `pre-commit run --all-files` is
green, `scripts/check_pr_document.py` reports no findings, and
`scripts/check_pr_api_diff.py` reports only the `max_elems` ->
`max_bytes` constructor advisory explained above.

Re-run at the rebased head `f0ff368c1` (2026-10-15) on the same node
with all eight GPUs, from a fresh checkout in a new directory (torch
2.14.1+cu130, nvcc 13.0, cold JIT cache):
`tests/comm/test_ulysses_communicator.py` 133 passed / 22 skipped / 0
failed, `tests/comm/test_ulysses_topology.py` 112 passed,
`tests/trace/test_ulysses_trace.py` +
`tests/trace/test_template_registry.py` 10 passed,
`tests/comm/test_cake_ulysses_a2a.py` + `tests/comm/test_ulysses_a2a.py`
+ `tests/comm/test_ulysses_head_chunk.py` 16 passed / 4 skipped, and the
six `tests/comm/test_pcie_ipc_*.py` files that import
`flashinfer.comm.pcie_ipc_ar` 73 passed / 12 skipped / 1 xfailed. The 22
skips are the forced-NVLink family; every PCIe case ran, including the
eight-rank all-RDMA and 4+4 hybrid routes. On the single-GPU host the
four core files give 187 passed / 90 skipped / 0 failed, `pre-commit run
--all-files` is green, `scripts/check_pr_document.py` reports no
findings and `scripts/check_pr_api_diff.py` only the `max_bytes`
advisory. `git range-diff` against the previous head `313ac10b8` shows
the 29 commits replay with context-only changes.

## Reviewer Notes

- The riskiest pieces are the epoch-barrier protocol
(`include/flashinfer/comm/ulysses_pcie.cuh`) and the mlx5 transport
(`csrc/ulysses_pcie_transport.cuh`): QP bring-up, interleaved-MKey
geometry (pitch ≤ 65535), completion accounting with per-exchange
immediate tags, and the abort/quiesce teardown ledger.
- `_validate`'s byte-budget capacity math after the per-call dtype
change (`flashinfer/comm/ulysses.py`) is worth a close read; the rescale
rationale is in the commit message of the dtype commit.
- The failure envelope is route-dependent on purpose, and the design
note's "Failure envelope" table is the contract to review against.
Python-side rejections are rank-uniform under the SPMD contract, so the
RDMA routes keep the communicator usable (the multi-rank tests rely on
refusing capture and a batch > 1 operand recoverably); the all-P2P route
poisons teardown because its barrier has no abort protocol at all.
Native failures on the RDMA routes publish the abort (now including the
per-call operand checks) and `close()` completes. Publishing the abort
from Python on every route is the first follow-up above.
- Things that are correct but will draw a question: (1) full-group CUDA
IPC is required even on the RDMA routes, because the barrier signals are
always IPC-mapped -- RDMA removes the P2P *data* requirement, not the
P2P requirement; (2) `batch == 1` on the RDMA routes comes from mode 0's
flat `rank * payload` remote offset, not from the NIC; (3) `input_ready`
is deliberately reused between `RunHybridBarrier` and `EnqueueCopies` so
the side streams inherit the post-barrier state; (4) the copy-engine
writes are ordered against the closing barrier's release store through
the `copy_done` event join, i.e. through `cudaMemcpyAsync` completion
semantics; (5) the per-call `dtype` is really per-`allocate_output`: the
registered buffer pins it and native re-checks every call against it.
- Placement: the backend uses the experimental machinery (warn-once,
gated `auto`, no AOT) but lives in `flashinfer/comm/` with tests in
`tests/comm/`, because it extends the stable `UlyssesCommunicator` class
and the routing shares its decision layer; there is no precedent for an
`@experimental_backend` in core. If the maintainers prefer the
Experimental Track layout, the code splits at the `_pcie_*` seam (the
methods touch only `rank`, `world_size`, `device`, `dtype`, `max_bytes`,
`backend`, `transport`, `decision`, `_state` and the `_gather` /
`_require_open` / `_validate` / `_output_geometry` helpers) and we will
move it.
