Nice! I ended up with the same decision for RTK 2.0. That said, I also replaced it with ESM builds that were pre-compiled to target the browser. How'd you end up deciding to drop UMD, and is there going to be an ESM-format replacement at all? |

The recommendation is to use esm.sh for demos. In fact, we should update our fixtures that use UMD: To use the esm.sh versions like this: (It does mean that it won't use local builds atm.) |

UMD builds will not be supported in React 19. These are no longer widely used and the use case for using React from script tags without builds can be served by ESM using something like esm.sh.
…fixture looks to be in a state of significant bitrot. I'm not going to bother addressing these issues here but at the very least we can now render React 19 without UMD using this fixture

In React 19 React will finally stop publishing UMD builds. This is motivated primarily by the lack of use of UMD format and the added complexity of maintaining build infra for these releases. Additionally with ESM becoming more prevalent in browsers and services like esm.sh which can host React as an ESM module there are other options for doing script tag based react loading. This PR removes all the UMD build configs and forks. There are some fixtures that still have references to UMD builds however many of them already do not work (for instance they are using legacy features like ReactDOM.render) and rather than block the removal on these fixtures being brought up to date we'll just move forward and fix or removes fixtures as necessary in the future. In React 19 React will finally stop publishing UMD builds. This is motivated primarily by the lack of use of UMD format and the added complexity of maintaining build infra for these releases. Additionally with ESM becoming more prevalent in browsers and services like esm.sh which can host React as an ESM module there are other options for doing script tag based react loading. This PR removes all the UMD build configs and forks. There are some fixtures that still have references to UMD builds however many of them already do not work (for instance they are using legacy features like ReactDOM.render) and rather than block the removal on these fixtures being brought up to date we'll just move forward and fix or removes fixtures as necessary in the future. @sebmarkbage , do you have any guidance on how we can quickly test changes made to the local React source code using the React project provided under the fixtures, since we no longer have the option to use UMD builds for this purpose? |

Can't bundle navigation react and support 'use client'. Bundling puts all components into a single file but 'use client' needs to be applied at the file level. So switched the package task of navigation react to transpile using typescript instead of bundle using rollup. Kept rollup for all other libraries and tasks. Without bundling typescript puts some helper stuff at the top of each file - it used appear just once when it was one big file. To keep this to a minimum removed 'import * as React from 'react';' - this isn't needed anymore because react/typescript adds 'react/jsx-runtime'. Removing this removes the importStar typescript helper stuff. Don't want to 'importHelpers' because then dependent on tslib and don't want any 3rd party dependencies. This stopped the build task from working because it didn't recognise 'react/jsx-runtime'. So added it as an external but there is no umd build for it so the index.html sample won't work anymore. But noticed that [react doesn't support umd builds anymore](facebook/react#28735 (comment)) anyway so will either ditch the build task and index.html sample or switch to esm?! will investigate later. Haven't tried the unbundled navigation react package but the files are generated at least

The DOM fixture hasn't worked on local builds since the UMD support was removed in #28735 Here we update the fixture to set the local experimental builds to window. Some of the pages are still broken, such as hydration. But these bugs exist on other versions as well and can be cleaned up separately.
