fix incompatible types errors when building the R extension dbarts on Arm

See vdorie/dbarts#66. We've run into this with EESSI for versions R-bundle-CRAN-2023.12-foss-2023a.eb and R-4.2.2-foss-2022b.eb, but I've also applied the fix to the other R 4.2.x versions.
