Summary

  • insertAll/upsertAll on Repo, Table and both drivers — one multi-row statement, chunked at Postgres's bind limit, four pre-statement refusals including a tenancy guard on updating upserts.
  • ReadBuilder.inBatches(size) — a disposable keyset iterator over a whole table, same plan/filters/tenancy/preload as page().
  • countBy(column, where) — one grouped-count statement replacing a per-row count() loop.
  • deleteWhere/updateWhere documented as the bulk write forms.
  • preload() and inBatches() now carry the same two-drivers-one-meaning proof every other bulk method in this PR has: a *-parity.test.ts (identical rows into both drivers, identical output) and a pg-driver-<feature>.live.test.ts (proved against a real Postgres) — closing the last gap in this PR group.

Test plan

  • bun test packages/entity — 389 pass / 56 skip (no TEST_DATABASE_URL)
  • TEST_DATABASE_URL=... bun test packages/entity — 433 pass, 0 fail (full live tier)
  • bun run verify — 12/17 (5 honest skips: job, eval, drift, contract-diff, budgets)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added bulk insertAll() and conflict-aware upsertAll() operations with validation, defaults, tenancy safeguards, and returned written rows.
    • Added inBatches(size) for ordered, cursor-based asynchronous iteration with resumable progress and clean cancellation.
    • Added countBy(column) for grouped counts with filtering, null handling, deterministic ordering, and bounded results.
  • Documentation
    • Updated API and architecture documentation with usage, validation, pagination, conflict-handling, and tenancy behavior.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved consistency between in-memory and PostgreSQL behavior for bulk writes, batching, grouped counts, and relation preloading.

sebyx07 and others added 5 commits August 13, 2026 02:48
- `insertStatement` builds every insert now — one row or ten thousand — so
`insertAll([row])` compiles to the text `insert(row)` always produced, plus
  an `on conflict (…) do update set …`/`do nothing` clause and a `default` cell
for a column a row inside the batch did not name.
- New `bulk-write.ts`: what both drivers must agree on, decided in property
space — the batch's column list, the upsert plan, the conflict key and the
  65535-bind-parameter chunking.
- `Repo.insertAll/upsertAll` + `Table.insertAll/upsertAll` (`Insertable`,
`$parse` per row, `touch()` on upsert), memory + Postgres. The result is the
rows the call wrote, so a `'nothing'` skip is absent from it.
- Four refusals before a statement exists: a conflict target no declared unique
constraint matches (all three declaration paths count), a target omitting the
tenant column under `'update'` (X_TENANCY_UNSCOPED — it would rewrite another
tenant's row), a batch repeating one target under `'update'` (21000), and an
uneven batch under `'update'` (`excluded.<col>` is the default, not the
stored value). Nulls are NULLS DISTINCT in both drivers, and the memory
driver asserts the whole batch before storing any of it.
- 68 new tests (bulk-write, repo, pg-driver-bulk, pg-driver-bulk.live), type
pins for the bulk signatures, docs in lockstep.

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `ReadBuilder.inBatches(size)` yields the chain's own pages until the
cursor runs out: one statement per batch, same filters, tenancy, soft
delete, `select()` and `preload()` as `page()`. No second read path,
and both drivers inherit it from the one they share.
- The handle is the iteration: `break`, a throw and `await using` stop
the next statement (`close()` is the generator's `return()`, so it is
idempotent), and `.cursor` is where it stopped — `.after(cursor)`
  resumes it.
- Three refusals on the chain, not one batch later: a size that is not a
whole number of rows, a `limit()` on the same chain, and an ordering no
cursor can carry — which a single-batch result would otherwise hide.
- `totalOrder()` extracted from `planFor` so the guard judges the order
the driver sends; `State.limit` is `number | undefined` so "the caller
named a page size" is distinguishable from the driver's default.
- 28 tests, 3 mutation-proved; type pins for the two consumption forms.

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `countBy` on `Repo`, on `ReadBuilder`/`Table` and on both drivers: one
  `group by` statement where recounting a page sent one `select count(*)` each
- `count-by.ts` is the one place the rule lives — the closed set of groupable
kinds, the group bound, the key's decoding, the order — so a rule added to one
driver alone is the drift it exists to prevent
- the bound refuses rather than truncates: the statement asks for one group past
`MAX_GROUPS`, and that extra group is what says the answer never fit
- a value nothing matched is absent, never `0`; NULL is one group in both drivers
- both outputs are fixed aliases, so a column named `count` cannot collide
- proved against a real Postgres in `pg-driver-count.live.test.ts`

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Cross-reference deleteWhere/updateWhere alongside insertAll/upsertAll as
the fix for a per-row delete/update loop, in README, CLAUDE.md, the
architecture doc, and inline in pg-driver.ts — the shape a write-loop
N+1 detector's fix: line will point to.

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- pg-driver-batch.live.test.ts / pg-driver-preload.live.test.ts prove inBatches()
and preload() against a real Postgres — the last two bulk methods in this PR
that had statement-shape tests but no live round-trip, per CLAUDE.md's "a new
read path is not done until it round-trips there" rule.
- batch-parity.test.ts / preload-parity.test.ts seed identical rows into memory
and postgres and assert identical batch boundaries / preload attachment —
insertAll/upsertAll and countBy already had this cross-driver assertion,
  these two did not.
- CLAUDE.md's "two drivers, one meaning" rule now names all of it: a *-parity
test plus a pg-driver-<feature>.live.test.ts is the bar for every new method.

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 19 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Mergeability Score: 🟠 High · up to aae75

This PR adds bulk writes, batching, and grouped aggregates, but the current version can produce incorrect data, resurrect deleted records, or commit only part of a requested transaction. Aggregate results may also differ between drivers, and required readiness checks still have failures, so the PR is not merge-ready until these issues are resolved.

placeholder. Update the expected error assertions in

In `@packages/entity/src/pg-driver-bulk.live.test.ts`:

In `@packages/entity/src/pg-driver-preload.live.test.ts`:
- Around line 164-169: Update the BY_AUTHOR assertion in the live-read test to
preserve the intended ordering check by removing sorting from the actual and

do not guarantee attachment order, document that contract instead and retain
order-independent comparison.
- Around line 188-199: Update the preload test assertions around
db().posts...preload('author').preload('reviewer') so they do not depend on sent

invocation.

In `@packages/entity/src/pg-sql.ts`:
- Around line 161-164: Update the grouped-count SQL query to add an ORDER BY on
the existing grouped column reference before the LIMIT clause, ensuring
deterministic Map iteration order while preserving the current grouping and
limit behavior.

In `@packages/entity/src/query.ts`:
- Around line 271-276: Update the countBy terminal and its underlying repository
calls so aggregate counts use the full predicate without applying page fields:
remove cursor and limit from the arguments passed to both Postgres and memory
drivers. Add coverage verifying cursor-bearing countBy queries return identical,
unpaginated aggregates across both drivers.

In `@packages/entity/src/repo.test.ts`:
- Around line 347-355: Update the test “an invariant judges every row of the
batch, not just the first” to assert that a failed insertAll leaves no rows
persisted, matching the all-or-nothing invariant contract in repo.ts and
pg-driver.ts. After the expected X_INVARIANT_VIOLATED rejection, verify the
repository contains neither batch member, including the row before the rejected
one.

In `@packages/entity/src/repo.ts`:
- Around line 311-348: Update upsertAll to detect when onMatch: 'update' would
include SOFT_DELETE_COLUMN in plan.set for an existing soft-deleted row, and
reject that operation with the established X_* error format and executable fix
guidance instead of writing the patch. Preserve normal updates and do-nothing
behavior for non-soft-deleted rows.

In `@wiki/Entities-And-Migrations.md`:
- Line 271: Update the “Groupable columns” row to state that a timestamp, jsonb,
or money column causes X_INVARIANT_VIOLATED, with the error naming a groupable
column of that entity; preserve the existing explanation about non-primitive Map
keys.
- Around line 256-260: Update the comment above the countBy call to state that
it performs one count query for all posts in ids, rather than implying one
statement per post. Leave the query and update loop unchanged.

Review of PR #66.

- `upsertPlan` spares a third closed set: the soft-delete column. A stamped
row still occupies its conflict target — that unique index is not partial —
so `excluded."deleted_at"` cleared a delete the app had made and handed the
row back holding the batch's values. Excluded rather than refused, because
`$parse` fills `deletedAt: null` into every row before the plan is built, so
refusing it would make `onMatch: 'update'` impossible on every soft-deleting
entity. `insertAll` is untouched. Proven in both drivers and against a real
  Postgres, red before the fix.
- `count-by.ts`: the too-many-groups `fix:` spells `<values>`, a placeholder,
where it named an identifier the caller does not have.
- Tests: the all-or-nothing insert batch is pinned (`count()` is 0 after the
refusal); `countBy` with a cursor and a `limit()` is pinned equal to the
unpaged breakdown in both drivers; the live migration's replaced index is
counted, so a rename fails as a rename and not as a `42703`; the concurrent
preload statements are asserted as a set, not by arrival position; the live
`hasMany` order claim is asserted rather than sorted away.
- `bulk-write.test.ts` crossed the 500-line ceiling and is split along its own
seam: what one statement carries stays, `upsert-plan.test.ts` takes the
refusals, the set list and the conflict key.
