feat(entity): batching reads — coalescing, JIT preload, preload() - #65
Conversation
…n (…)` - new coalesce.ts: the point lookups a request issues in one microtask become one statement, keyed by ctx identity (a WeakMap, so the batch dies with the request). findById keeps its signature, so the fix reaches code already written and there is nothing to opt into - the scope key covers every input to the statement except the id, so two tenants, two soft-delete visibilities, two projections, two entities or two clients never share one: the coalesced statement has to be one each single lookup would have been served by - it declines rather than guesses — no request in scope (a job, a script), a composite primary key, a scope value it cannot render — and declining is exactly the statement findById always sent - a uuid is filed lower-cased, because Postgres matches one as a value: an id handed in upper case must not depend on who shared the microtask - a row that no longer decodes fails its own caller, not the batch; past 500 ids the batch becomes whole statements, never one Postgres refuses for its bind count - the window closes before the statement goes out, so a lookup arriving mid-flight opens the next batch instead of joining ids on the wire - 16 tests, 7 of them red without the wiring, plus a live case: five lookups, one statement, the same five answers from a real Postgres Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `findMany` leaves its page's foreign key values behind for the request; the first `findById` for any of them resolves that key for every row of the page in one `where "id" in (…)`, and the rest of the loop is memory. A `for … of` awaits between iterations, so the microtask coalescer can never see two of its lookups — only the page can batch them. - The scope guard is a security boundary: a preloaded row is served only under the same scope key (tenant predicate, soft-delete visibility, projection, entity), the same client, and no write to that entity since. The preload statement is that scope widened to the page's ids, so a page's ids can never resolve rows outside the reader's own scope. - `writing()` in `postgresRepo` is the one place a write drops what the request preloaded, before the statement goes out. - `batch-read.ts` extracted so the coalescer and the preload share one scope key, one `keyOf` and one `in` statement. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `ReadBuilder.preload('<relation>')`: one extra `where <key> in (…)` per
relation over the page's key values, attached under the relation's name —
the eager third of the batching family, and the line an N+1 fix names
- the relation is the `references()` already declared; an unknown name is
`X_PRELOAD_UNKNOWN_RELATION` on the chain, not one page later
- `belongsTo` attaches the row or null, `hasMany` an array, always present;
relations resolve concurrently, a name given twice is one statement
- tenancy is carried, never guessed: the page's own tenant predicate reaches
the related read only across a same-named tenant column, else the related
read's own `assertScoped` refuses it
- `select()` is widened with the key a preload reads, so a projection can drop
neither that key nor the relation; attachment copies the row
- reach is the `database()` set, through its driver — memory and Postgres mean
the same thing; outside it, `X_INVARIANT_VIOLATED` naming the call that fixes it

- Add `db.jitPreload: boolean` to DatabaseConfig (default true) - Wire through PostgresDriverOptions to gate tagSiblings in findMany - Enables app to disable JIT preload if needed (axiom 1: one way per thing) - Tests verify both enabled and disabled paths work correctly Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- pg-driver.live.test.ts already proved N concurrent findById -> one coalesced `in` statement; add the sequential-loop-over-findMany case (a `for … of` loop over a page of invoiceTags resolves the invoices it points at in exactly two statements total, not one per row) so the JIT-preload half of the same claim is proved live, not only against a recording client. - cross-tenant non-coalescing and soft-delete-filter preservation were already pinned at the unit level (coalesce.test.ts, jit-preload.test.ts) and, for soft-delete, inside the existing live coalescing test. Addresses PR #65 review. - preload.ts: `tenantScope()` checks BOTH ends. A source scoped by `workspaceId` carrying an ordinary `orgId` predicate no longer supplies the target's tenant scope — the related read builds an unscoped plan and `assertScoped` refuses it as `X_TENANCY_UNSCOPED`, as documented. - preload.ts: `unreachable()`'s fix is a runnable `x entities list --json` ahead of the `database()` edit that repairs it. - pg-driver.test.ts: the two `jitPreload` tests ran outside a request, so `tagSiblings` returned early in both and neither could fail. They now run a page and the sequential loop after it inside a request and count statements: enabled 2, disabled 3. - core config: `database.jitPreload` is gone. Nothing reads config at the seam that builds a repository, so the key was inert; `postgresDriver({ jitPreload: false })` is the one switch. - tests: header comment on coalesce.test.ts, a title that names the row count it builds, the why behind the pre-update name, and the live observer filtered to the two tables under test. - docs: CHANGELOG, entity README/CLAUDE.md, data-layer and wiki follow.
