GCC 14 & Clang 19

GCC {N-1}.3 was released recently¹, which is the annual trigger for the spring compiler update. Clang 19 has already long reached its conclusion (as did clang 20 actually), but we've usually done odd versions in the spring and even version in the fall (c.f. links below)

To-Do list based on docs:

  • Cannot update because we're already at the limit for CUDA 11.8 (GCC 11) resp. CUDA 12.6 (GCC 13); CUDA 12.8+ supports GCC 14 though (will be incorporated into Migrate for CUDA 12.9 #7476)
• Checked release notes for ABI-relevant changes
  • GCC release notes & porting guide
    • Some tighter warnings in C on the way towards defaulting to C23 in GCC 15
  • Clang potentially breaking changes
    • Some minor changes in complicated template scenarios
  • Clang ABI changes
    • Some minor mangling changes, but basically only on windows (getting more compatible with MSVC).
    • Also compare changes in 18, 17, 16, 15 & 14
