fix(docs): disable next-themes storage in docs RootProvider - #18612
Part of #18078 — Fumadocs dark-mode configuration fix.
The docs RootProvider (fumadocs-ui) defaulted to next-themes storageKey
'theme', colliding with the root themeStore's persisted 'theme' key.
This prevented .dark from being applied on /docs.
Set theme.enabled: false so the docs provider defers to the root theme
management and stops writing a conflicting class on .
Disabling the next-themes provider left the Fumadocs switch with a no-op
setTheme, so the toggle rendered and did nothing. Fill its slot with a switch
bound to themeStore, keep the "d" hotkey the provider used to mount, and drop
the props the disabled provider ignores.
Thanks, @mihsanalam. The theme fix is useful, and a maintainer rework that binds the docs theme switch to the root store is ready.
The later commit cb8b57bf (the await cookies() locale fix for #18699 and the Alert dismissible={false} change on login and status) is a separate change. It also changes default behavior, because non-English /docs pages start serving translations, and its test only pins source text.
Could you move that commit to its own PR, ideally with a test that exercises the locale detection? That way each change can be reviewed and landed separately, with your credit on both.

New Features
Added a light/dark theme switch to the documentation pages, synchronized with the dashboard theme.
Press D to switch themes when you’re not typing in a text field or dialog.
Documentation pages can display translated Markdown content when available.
Bug Fixes
Theme icons now appear after the page mounts, and theme changes persist across the dashboard and documentation.
The docs theme switch and d hotkey now use the root theme store, and the docs layout delegates <html> theme ownership to the app provider. Docs pages also use a safe locale-specific Markdown fallback and render its HTML with the base page table of contents.

The docs switch and d hotkey set the opposite explicit theme through the root theme store. The docs layout uses the switch and hotkey, and disables its own theme integration. Tests cover toggling, hotkey filtering, and layout configuration. The changelog describes the theme-provider replacement.
Docs locale fallback
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Locale fallback and page rendering src/app/docs/[...slug]/page.tsx
Locale selection uses the cookie value or default locale. For non-English locales, the page tries a safe locale-specific Markdown file, renders and sanitizes its HTML, and uses the base page table of contents.
Some readers may see English docs instead of a translation, or translated pages without a title or working table of contents. The read-error case requires a future directory collision. The changes are mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b8a1e
Path validation and HTML sanitization remain in place, and the theme changes affect presentation preferences rather than privileges. However, the replacement translation pipeline weakens failure isolation: an unreadable translation can now fail a docs request instead of falling back to English.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · observed: The replacement route-owned translation pipeline weakens the optional-content recovery contract. The previous loader caught file-read and rendering failures and returned null, allowing English rendering. The new pipeline catches directory-listing failures only; a selected unreadable entry or rendering failure rejects the docs request. This is a bounded failure-containment regression, not evidence of a service-wide outage or attacker-controlled filesystem modification.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The traced server-side exposure is locale-dependent rendering of published docs pages, with request failure possible for a selected unreadable mirror. The theme path changes browser presentation attributes and a local preference; it does not reach an authorization or credential sink in the inspected flow.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The filesystem boundary rejects unsafe locale and slug characters and checks resolved-directory containment. The rendering boundary uses the existing explicit HTML tag and attribute allowlist after Markdown parsing. Link normalization is not relied upon as the HTML security control.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Disabling the competing theme provider consolidates ownership. The hotkey listener is removed on cleanup, and system-preference subscription is limited to system mode. Persistence failure may still lose a visual preference on reload, but that inherited limitation does not weaken a security guarantee in the traced theme flow.

Canonicalize NEXT_LOCALE before resolving docs translations.
getDocsLocale bypasses the shared alias resolver. An allowed legacy cookie such as uk can therefore target docs/i18n/uk, while the translated files are under docs/i18n/uk-UA. The fallback returns null, and the page renders English docs. Use resolveRequestedLocale here so aliases and case variants resolve to canonical directory names.

Restrict the match to .md files and handle read errors.
The predicate strips .md only from the candidate name. A directory named like the target also passes it. Example: docs/a/b.md and a sibling directory docs/a/b/ both exist. If files.find returns the directory, fs.readFileSync throws EISDIR. The throw is outside any try, so the page returns a 500. Every other failure in this function returns null and falls back to the English MDX.
Require the .md suffix and guard the read.
🛠️ Proposed fix
- const match = files.find((f) => f.toLowerCase().replace(/\.md$/, "") === target.toLowerCase());+ const match = files.find(+ (f) => f.toLowerCase().endsWith(".md") && f.toLowerCase().slice(0, -3) === target.toLowerCase()+ );
if (!match) return null;
const filePath = path.join(sectionDir, match);
- const raw = fs.readFileSync(filePath, "utf8");+ let raw: string;+ try {+ raw = fs.readFileSync(filePath, "utf8");+ } catch {+ return null;+ }

Render the page title on translated pages.
The translated branch removes the localized # title with the header separator, then renders only the translated body. It does not render a replacement title, so reachable translated pages can have no visible page title.

Keep translated TOC entries aligned with translated headings.
The translated branch passes the English page.data.toc, but marked.parse renders the translated headings without id attributes. On reachable translated pages, the TOC links therefore have no matching targets. Restore the existing translated renderer and its translated TOC, or suppress the TOC for this branch until matching anchors are available.

…ence#18768 after the theme-storage merge
The merge of release/v3.8.53 into this branch kept the pre-cheaper-inference#18699 version of
src/app/docs/[...slug]/page.tsx (an earlier revert on the branch), which dropped
loadTranslatedDoc/resolveRequestedLocale and broke docs-translated-page-18699.
Take the release version unchanged; the PR's theme-storage change lives in layout.tsx.
