Problem. The background client-version getters (Copilot, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Qwen, CodeBuddy, Kimi Code, Zed, OpenCode) run on every upstream request. Two gaps made them hit npm/GitHub far more often than intended:
Pin-equal answers were never cached. The cache only kept a version newer than the pinned one, so when the registry answered with the pinned version, nothing was stored and the next call started another lookup. In practice that meant one lookup per request.
Failures retried on every request. A failed lookup (network error, non-2xx, unparseable payload) cached nothing, so a down or rate-limited registry was asked again on each request. That spends the anonymous GitHub budget (60 requests per hour per IP), which the server's own refresh needs.
Fix. Each module now tracks the earliest time it may start another background lookup (nextRefreshAt):
Any answer, newer or not, counts as checked for the module's existing cache TTL (6 hours). OpenCode already cached its answers, so it only gains the failure window below.
A failure waits BACKGROUND_REFRESH_RETRY_AFTER_FAILURE_MS (15 minutes) before the next attempt. This constant is shared and lives in src/shared/utils/backgroundRefresh.ts.
Each module's reset helper clears the window, so tests and forced refreshes still work.
This only delays background lookups. The pinned versions and the headers built from them are unchanged.

Tests Added Or Updated
tests/unit/version-refresh-retry-window.test.ts (new). For each getter, it checks that a registry answer equal to the pin is not fetched again on the next calls, and that a failed lookup waits for the retry window. On the release base it fails (0/15) because the shared constant and the windows do not exist there. It passes on this branch.
Coverage Notes
Changed production files: open-sse/config/providerHeaderProfiles.ts, open-sse/executors/providers/registry/kimi/coding/runtime.ts, open-sse/executors/zedClientVersion.ts, open-sse/utils/opencodeCliVersion.ts, src/shared/constants/claudeCodeClient.ts, src/shared/constants/geminiCliClient.ts, src/shared/utils/backgroundRefresh.ts. The new test exercises each getter's answered and failed paths.
Reviewer Notes
The windows are 15 minutes after a failure and the module's cache TTL (6 hours) after any answer.
The open-sse files import @/shared/utils/backgroundRefresh, which they already import on release, so this adds no new kind of boundary edge.
The provider registry and the client-identity constants are bundled into
the dashboard, so the sync version getters run in the browser too. Their
background refreshes were guarded by `typeof process === "undefined"` (or
not at all), but Next.js gives browser code a `process` object. Every full
dashboard page load therefore fired anonymous lookups from the viewer's
browser: the Codex and Zed GitHub release APIs (60 requests/hour per IP,
the same budget the server's own refresh needs) and the npm registry for
Claude Code, Copilot, Gemini, Qwen, CodeBuddy, Kimi and OpenCode. Once the
GitHub budget ran out they showed up as "403 rate limit exceeded" in the
console.
- Add canStartBackgroundRefresh() (src/shared/utils/backgroundRefresh.ts):
true only in a server process (no `window`, `process` present).
- Gate the eight getter-triggered refreshes on it; the server path is
unchanged.
- Codex: a failed release lookup cached nothing, so every hot-path call
retried it while rate-limited. Record the failure and wait
CODEX_VERSION_RETRY_AFTER_FAILURE_MS (15 min) before the next attempt.
Tests: tests/unit/background-version-refresh-browser.test.ts — for each
getter, no fetch with a browser `window` present (all nine failed before
the fix) plus a server-side control that still refreshes; and a Codex test
that a failed lookup is not retried on the next calls (5 retries before,
0 after) but is retried after the window.
… call
The sync version getters (Copilot, Claude Code, Gemini, Qwen, CodeBuddy,
Kimi, Zed) start a background npm/GitHub lookup whenever their cache is
empty, but the cache only kept versions newer than the pin. When the
registry answered the pin itself (the normal state right after a pin bump),
an older version, or nothing at all, no state was recorded and the next
call fetched again. The server builds these headers per upstream request,
so that was one registry request per request. OpenCode cached any answer
but nothing on failure, and its refresh runs on every request.
- BACKGROUND_REFRESH_RETRY_AFTER_FAILURE_MS (15 min) in
src/shared/utils/backgroundRefresh.ts.
- Each getter now records when it may start the next background lookup:
one module TTL (6 h) after any answer, the retry window after a failure.
The shared npm helper behind Qwen/CodeBuddy takes a setNextRefreshAt
callback; OpenCode checks the window inside its refresh, which only the
request path calls.
- Returned versions and explicit refresh calls are unchanged.
Tests: tests/unit/version-refresh-retry-window.test.ts drives each getter
against a stub registry. For a pin-equal answer, 5 follow-up calls made 5
lookups before (0 after); for a failure, 5 calls made 5 retries before
(0 after) and the lookup runs again once the window has passed. 15/15
failed before the fix and pass after.

Bug Fixes
Prevented browser-side version checks from making unnecessary external requests or consuming API rate limits.
Failed version lookups now wait 15 minutes before retrying instead of repeating on every request.
Version results matching a pinned client version are cached for six hours, reducing repeated lookups.
Background version lookups now use a shared runtime eligibility check. Client getters schedule the next lookup after a successful result or a failed lookup, and tests cover browser behavior, pinned-version answers, and retry timing.
Changes: Client Version Refresh
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared refresh eligibility and Codex retry src/shared/utils/backgroundRefresh.ts, open-sse/config/codexClient.ts, tests/unit/background-version-refresh-browser.test.ts, changelog.d/fixes/18503-browser-version-lookups.md
The shared helper checks whether background refresh is allowed. Codex records failed lookups and waits 15 minutes before another attempt. Browser tests cover refresh eligibility for the client getters.
Client getters schedule resolved-version lookups after the cache TTL and failed lookups after the shared retry interval. Tests cover pinned-version answers and retry timing.
The fast unit-test workflow can fail depending on test-file order. Reset Kimi’s captured fetch implementation in both tests before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f9774
The change reduces unnecessary background requests while preserving existing fallback behavior. No newly expanded access or privilege was established, but deployment-specific runtime behavior remains unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly evidenced exposure is shared per-process version-refresh state and outbound metadata requests. Repeated getter calls can trigger refreshes, but ordinary concurrent calls share an in-flight request and completed failures now impose a cooldown. The change does not introduce tenant-specific storage or additional lookup authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — External metadata remains untrusted input to version parsing. The inspected npm paths accept dotted triples, and Zed strips an optional release-tag prefix before validation. Most refreshers retain the newer-than-pin rule; OpenCode retains its existing valid-version caching behavior. These parsing and fallback rules are unchanged by the PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The added tests specify browser suppression, continued server refresh, immediate retry suppression, and recovery after the failure window. They provide executable assertions for request containment, but were not run during this review.

Restore the fetch implementation captured by the Kimi module.
This import runs after the test replaces global fetch. open-sse/config/providers/registry/kimi/coding/runtime.ts captures that stub in fetchImpl, but test.after restores only global fetch. The declared test:unit:fast command runs files in one process. If this file imports Kimi first, tests/unit/version-refresh-retry-window.test.ts receives the 503-only stub and its pin-answer case fails. If the other file imports Kimi first, this file cannot count its Kimi server lookup. Restore or replace the captured implementation between files, not only global fetch. Node documents that --test-isolation=none shares process state across test files. (nodejs.org)

Ensure the Kimi runtime’s captured fetchImpl does not retain this test’s stub
across files in the shared-process test run. Update the test setup and cleanup
around the Kimi runtime import to restore or replace its captured implementation
between tests, while preserving this test’s ability to count the Kimi server
lookup; do not rely on restoring only global fetch.
