- The workflow's documented condition is broader than “carrying an unmerged change”: deep review skips whenever the PR head's
claude-review.ymldiffers from the default branch, including a stale branch that never edited the file (.github/workflows/claude-review.yml:650-659). Also, the PR cannot reach merge having been read only by Copilot because line 51 requires human review; scope that claim to AI reviewers.
review is separately unavailable to a branch carrying an unmerged change to its own workflow
file. A stacked PR can therefore reach merge having been read by Copilot alone. Either land a
stack one PR at a time, or retarget the upper PR at the default branch once its base merges and
let the reviewers see it there.
CONTRIBUTING.md:342
- This repeats the narrower condition that the workflow explicitly warns against: the branch need not “carry an unmerged change” to the workflow. Any mismatch between the PR-head and default-branch copies of
claude-review.yml, including simple staleness, can skip the deep review (.github/workflows/claude-review.yml:650-659).

branch that carries an unmerged change to its own workflow. Land a stack one PR at a time, or

Deep review — 3 blocking · 3 advisory
| Row | Severity | Area | Finding | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🟠 Major | Correctness | “a manual mention does not override it” — CodeRabbit's own skip notice on #579 says the opposite; the refusals cited are #651's rate limits, on a main-based PR |
docs/docs/guides/getting-started/ai-development.md:45 |
| 2 | 🟡 Minor | Correctness | Deep-review skip stated as “carries an unmerged change to its own workflow file”; the condition is that the branch's copy of claude-review.yml differs from the default branch's — the narrow form root CLAUDE.md says already bit us |
docs/docs/guides/getting-started/ai-development.md:46, CONTRIBUTING.md:341 |
| 3 | 🟡 Minor | Correctness | The cap posts a fixed pause message and ai-loop-paused; it lists no threads. The thread-aware exits are the contested path (a count) and the convergence handoff |
CONTRIBUTING.md:334 |
| 4 | 🔵 Advisory | Robustness | On #579 — the cited reproduction — no Copilot review appeared either, so the floor on a stacked PR is zero reviewers, not one; “can … Copilot alone” is the optimistic bound | docs/docs/guides/getting-started/ai-development.md:47 |
| 5 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | “Every PR gets a CodeRabbit review automatically” is now one counterexample from false, corrected only by the new bullet further down the same section | CONTRIBUTING.md:315 |
| 6 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | For the maintainer, not the fixer: the PR body repeats finding 1 — a “Review skipped” notice “that a manual mention does not override” — and neither this review nor the fix agent can edit a PR body | PR description |
Overall: The change is the right shape — both conventions are real, both are filed where a reader meets them, and the round cap is cited as MAX_ITERATIONS rather than a number, which is what keeps it from drifting (verified: claude-pr-loop.yml:58 sets it). The riskiest part is that a docs-only PR's entire deliverable is the accuracy of a handful of sentences, and three of them claim more than the mechanism delivers. Look at finding 1 first: it is the operative sentence of the new paragraph, it is refutable from the vendor notice on the PR cited as its own reproduction, and it tells an operator not to run the one command that would restore the missing reviewer. Findings 2 and 3 are each fixed by a deletion or a one-clause correction.
Residual risk:
- Manual mention on a non-default base — open, posted as finding 1. No one in this repo has ever run the command on such a PR (#579's entire history is the skip notice, the author's close note, and the triage comment), so the negation in the guide has no supporting instance, while the vendor's own notice on that PR names the command as the single-review trigger.
- The retarget remedy — unverified, and named here rather than posted. Whether changing a PR's base to the default branch re-fires CodeRabbit's auto review on its own, or still wants a push or a mention afterwards, has no instance here: #579 is the only non-
main-based PR this repo has ever had, and it was closed rather than retargeted. The guide states retargeting as sufficient. - The one-reviewer floor — refuted as an upper bound, not as a lower one: #579's reviews list is empty, so a stacked PR can also land with no AI reviewer at all. The “can … Copilot alone” phrasing does not exclude that, but does not convey it either (row 4).
- Docs-guide prose gates — refuted: the added prose cites a setting name rather than a number and carries no run ids or line references, and CI on this head is green, the fragile-prose net included.
- The deep review itself on this PR — refuted for the case at hand: this branch's copy of
claude-review.ymlmatches the default branch's, which is why this review exists to be read at all.
🏄 Two solid conventions paddled out on a clean set, but three of the waves get ridden further than the water actually goes — trim those clauses back and this one is a glassy ride straight to merge.
Both reviewers caught the same two errors, and they were mine to make: the guide said a manual mention cannot override the auto-review filter, which CodeRabbit own skip notice contradicts by naming that command, and both files stated the deep-review skip in the narrow form root CLAUDE.md warns about instead of the copy-differs condition. Also dropped the claim that the cap lists open threads (it posts a pause message and the label), the reviewer-floor claim (a stacked PR can land with none, not one), the unverified retarget remedy, and the absolute in the CodeRabbit bullet the new one contradicted.

Deep review (verify) — 2 resolved · 0 open
| # | Severity | Area | Finding | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🟡 Minor | Correctness | Deep-review skip restated in the narrow "modifies its own workflow" form — verified fixed, both files now state the copy-differs comparison | docs/docs/guides/getting-started/ai-development.md:45 |
| 2 | 🟡 Minor | Correctness | Cap credited with listing the open threads — verified fixed, the bullet now says it pauses and labels ai-loop-paused |
CONTRIBUTING.md:330 |
Overall: This pass settled the threads the earlier deep review left open and reviewed no commits — no fresh review of the current code was performed, and no new findings were raised. Both of my open threads were genuinely fixed in 61b59ca and are now resolved: the skip condition reads as the comparison against the default branch's copy (the unmerged-change clause is an instance of that condition, not a narrowing of it), and the stopping-point bullet matches the halt path in claude-pr-loop.yml. One thread from Copilot on CONTRIBUTING.md:315 (drafts: false vs. the "every PR targeting main" claim) is still open — that one is the maintainer's call, not mine.
Residual risk:
- Deep-review skip clause — refuted:
CONTRIBUTING.md:342-343andai-development.md:45-46both nameclaude-review.ymland the default-branch comparison, so an operator can check it withgit diff origin/main -- .github/workflows/claude-review.yml; the stale-base case (#605) sits inside the condition as written. - Cap-behaviour claim — refuted against the workflow: the gate rewrites the mode at
claude-pr-loop.yml:299-300, the halt job posts one fixed cap message at:1112and appliesai-loop-pausedat:1121. The bullet now claims nothing more than that. - CodeRabbit base-branch claim in the same paragraph — refuted against
.coderabbit.yaml:28-29(base_branches: [main]), which is the default branch alone. - Prose-only diff, so the executable residual-risk surfaces do not apply here;
pnpm exec prettier --checkpasses on both changed files.
🏄 Verify pass only, dude — paddled back out to my own two threads, found both cleanly shredded in
61b59ca, called them and got out of the water. Nothing new caught, nothing left hanging on my side.

- This repeats the CodeRabbit base filter and Claude workflow-copy mechanism that the canonical docs guide now explains. The repository's one-home rule requires other mentions to be pointers (
.github/CLAUDE.md:635-637), and this second copy can drift independently. Keep only an operator-facing pointer in the short version.

Closes #655.
Two conventions that were only ever tribal knowledge.
A stopping point for hand-driven PRs. The autonomous loop stops after
MAX_ITERATIONSfix rounds, pauses, and labels the PR for a human. A PR a maintainer drives had no equivalent, so every finding read as blocking however small.CONTRIBUTING.mdnow says to give it the same stopping point: once what is left is wording rather than behaviour, reply once naming what you are leaving and why, and take the PR to human review. The cap is cited as the workflow setting rather than a number, so it cannot drift. The stacked-PR blind spot. A PR based on another PR branch loses its automatic reviews. Worth correcting the issue on one point: the CodeRabbit half is our own configuration, not a vendor limitation.
.coderabbit.yamllists the default branch alone underauto_review.base_branches, and CodeRabbit skips any other base with a notice that names@coderabbitai reviewas the way to get a single review anyway. The deep review is separately unavailable to a branch whose copy ofclaude-review.ymldiffers from the default branch. The guide records that where it describes what reviews a PR, names the setting so an operator can find it, and gives the two ways forward: ask for the review you want, and prefer landing a stack one PR at a time.On the issue evidence. The issue cites #651 as having had no CodeRabbit review while stacked. Its base was the default branch, and its gaps were rate limits; it did get a review. The base-branch skip is real and reproduces on #579, whose base was another branch. Nothing in the guide repeats the wrong example, and the issue carries a correction.
Review history. The first deep review and Copilot independently caught the same two errors in the opening draft: a claim that a manual mention cannot override the skip, which the vendor notice contradicts, and the deep-review skip stated in the narrow form root
CLAUDE.mdwarns about. Both corrected, along with three overstatements found alongside them.Summary by CodeRabbit
