This adds HoverCard, a card that previews what's behind a link or a button while the pointer rests on it or keyboard focus is on it. Think a person's avatar and team on a username, a summary on a link to a repo, a definition on a glossary term. It's a preview, not a destination, so the docs nudge you to keep everything in it one click away wherever the trigger goes.

It's the next item on the comparison tracker, and the matrix's Hover card row credits bestax now.

Why it's its own component

The Popover proposal guessed this would be a trigger="hover" mode on Popover. Once Popover existed it was pretty clear that would mean an if (hover) in most of its effects and handlers: Popover opens on a click, moves focus into a role="dialog", traps Tab, and closes on an outside press, and a hover card does none of that. So Popover stays exactly as it is. Popover.tsx, useAnchoredPosition.ts, PickerPopover.tsx and _popover.scss have no diff here, and their suites pass untouched.

The hover logic lives in one internal hook, helpers/useHoverOpen.ts, which isn't exported. It decides when to ask for open and closed: pointer enter and leave, keyboard focus and blur, the two delays, and Escape. It renders nothing and knows nothing about ARIA or placement. HoverCard is a thin component around it: the open state (controlled or not, the way Popover does it), the trigger clone with its ARIA, and the card.

What it reuses

As is, with nothing pulled out of Popover:

  • useAnchoredPosition and marginGap for the corners, auto, and the fixed coordinates appendToBody needs. The card takes its gap from a margin in its stylesheet, the way the hook's TSDoc asks a new panel to.
  • Portal and useIsHydrated, so a portaled card shows up after hydration and never in server markup.
  • useClientLayoutEffect, inside the hook.
  • PickerPosition, exported as HoverCardPosition the way Popover exports PopoverPosition.

The proposal also listed the shadowDom helpers. It turned out the hook doesn't need them: React's own handlers see real targets inside a shadow root, the document listeners don't care where an event came from, and "did focus go down with the card" is a plain check against <body>. There's a shadow root test and an iframe test anyway, so a card in either still behaves.

Accessibility

WCAG's Content on Hover or Focus is the bar, and each of its conditions maps onto something:

  • Dismissible: Escape closes the card wherever focus is, without moving the pointer or focus. One listener per document, in the capture phase and only while a card is open or on its way to open, handles it. The keypress belongs to whatever has focus: when that's the card, its trigger or nothing, the card takes it and stops it there, so a Popover or Modal around the card stays open. Modal's own Escape listener doesn't check defaultPrevented, so preventing the default alone wouldn't have kept it out. When focus is somewhere else, such as a combobox elsewhere on the page or a Modal opened from a button in the card, the card still closes, since hover put it there without focus, and the key goes on to whatever has focus. Which card closes goes by three rules in turn: the one focus is in, then the innermost (a card whose floating element holds no other open card's trigger, which follows nesting whether either card is portaled), then the one that opened last. So with a card inside another, the inner one goes first and the next Escape closes the outer, even when both opened in the same commit. Focus that was in the card goes back to the trigger, and handing it back doesn't reopen anything. It stays closed until the pointer or focus leaves and comes back. A controlled card whose parent keeps it open still takes Escape when focus is in it, on its trigger or nowhere, so a Modal around such a card doesn't close from the keyboard until the card does. That's on open and onOpenChange in the TSDoc and in the Controlled section of the docs page. A card stays among the ones that want Escape from the moment its open is on its way until it closes, and an Escape between asking to open and the render that shows it takes the ask back, so the card doesn't appear right after it.
  • Hoverable: the pointer can move from the trigger onto the card. closeDelay covers the gap, and the card takes pointer events, unlike Tooltip.
  • Persistent: no timer closes a card that's hovered or focused. Focus anywhere in the card holds it open however it got there, including focus in a nested card portaled to <body>, and the card closes once focus leaves it. Whether a click focuses what it lands on is the browser's call, though: Safari and Firefox on macOS don't focus a button on click, so there a clicked button doesn't keep the card open once the pointer moves away. The docs say so rather than promising it.

Around that:

  • Keyboard focus opens it after openDelay, the way hover does. That's the browser's own call: focus counts when the trigger matches :focus-visible. Focus from a press doesn't, and neither does a touch pointer, so tapping a link on a phone just follows the link. Clicking the trigger never toggles the card.
  • The trigger keeps its own role and gets aria-expanded and aria-controls, which say it's expanded and name the card's id only while the card exists, so a portaled defaultOpen card isn't announced before hydration puts it on the page. No aria-haspopup.
  • HoverCard doesn't make the trigger focusable, because it can't know what the element is: Popover adds a tab stop only alongside role="button", which fits a trigger that toggles something and doesn't fit one that does nothing when activated. Instead a development build warns once when the trigger element itself can't take focus, and says to use a link or a button, or tabIndex={0}. It has to be the element itself, since focus comes back to it and its ARIA is on it, so a link inside a <span> doesn't pass. The check goes by what the element is and never reads styles, so a link that's hidden for now doesn't trip it.
  • The card is a plain element with an id and no role. Inline, it sits right after the trigger, so Tab goes from the trigger into its links and tabbing past them closes it. With appendToBody it's at the end of <body>, so it sits last in the Tab order: Tab reaches it only after the rest of the page, and focus leaving the trigger on the way closes it. The TSDoc and the docs page both spell that out.
  • When the card closes with focus inside it, for any reason, focus goes back to the trigger unless the same update already put it somewhere else. That covers the "Follow was clicked" case the proposal gave for controlled state, where the app closes the card from inside it.
  • Opening moves no focus and nothing traps it. The fade-in is off under prefers-reduced-motion.

One thing worth knowing about the focus check: it asks the browser, through (event.target as Element).matches(':focus-visible'), rather than keeping its own record of the last key or press. The browser knows things a page can't see, like Tab coming in from the address bar, and it handles focus a script moves the way it handles the input before it, so a Popover panel opened with a click that puts focus on a card's trigger doesn't open the card. A browser that can't match the selector throws, and then every focus counts, so keyboard users can still open it. jsdom matches :focus-visible on any focus, so the tests stub it for the press cases.

On touch screens

A touch screen has no hover, so by default a phone or tablet never opens a HoverCard, the same as Radix and Mantine out of the box. The first tap belongs to the trigger, and a link should go where it goes. The docs page says so near the top and in Accessibility: whatever the card shows has to be reachable from the trigger as well.

For triggers with no tap action of their own, openOnTap (off by default) opens the card with a tap, the way Mantine's opt-in events={{ touch: true }} does. I named it to sit next to the pickers' openOnFocus and Popover's closeOnEscape: it says when the card opens and what opens it.

  • A tap on the trigger (pointerType touch) opens the card at once, with no openDelay, and it stays open with no hover timer.
  • A second tap on the trigger, a tap or press outside the trigger and the card, or Escape closes it. The outside press comes from a document pointerdown listener that's there only while a tap holds the card open, and it's removed on close and unmount.
  • A tap or a delay asks the caller to open the card. If a controlled caller turns that down without rendering anything, the ask lapses once the event is over, so a refused tap doesn't make a later open behave like a tapped one, and a refused hover doesn't leave the Escape listener on.
  • A press counts as inside when React brings it to the wrapper, on the trigger or anywhere in the card's tree, portals included, so a tap in a nested card, portaled or not, leaves the outer one open. It also counts when its path runs through the trigger or the card, the check Popover makes, so a control in the card that stops its press doesn't close it, even under a React root on the whole document, where React's listener and the card's share it.
  • The tap isn't prevented, so the trigger's own action still runs. That's why the TSDoc says to turn it on only for a trigger with no tap action, such as a Button with no onClick: on a link, the first tap would follow the link rather than show the card.
  • Touch enter and leave still don't count as hover, focus keeps its rules, aria-expanded follows the card as before, and mouse and pen work the same with the prop on.

The docs page gets an "On Touch Screens" example with a Button trigger, and the other examples with a Button trigger turn the prop on, so they open on a phone. The examples with a link leave it off, which the page explains: a tap on a link should take you where it goes, and that page is where the preview's content lives anyway. That includes the first example, so on a phone it still does nothing, which is the honest default. There's a TouchOpen story and an openOnTap control, and the custom-component and layout-scaffold skills say when to use it.

Calls the proposal left open

  • The hover and focus handlers sit on the wrapper span, not on the trigger. The card is inside the wrapper in React's tree even when it's portaled, so one set of handlers hears from both, and the trigger only has to pass aria-expanded and aria-controls through to its DOM node. Handlers you put on the HoverCard itself still run first.
  • The wrapper is inline-block. Popover's is inline-flex with vertical-align: top, which sits wrong in a line of text. inline-block keeps the trigger on the text's baseline and still wraps a taller trigger like a button, which the card is placed against.
  • The card's z-index is the tooltip layer that Tooltip uses, so a portaled card shows over a Modal. Popover's sits lower.
  • white-space: normal on the card, so a trigger in a line that doesn't wrap doesn't stop the card wrapping.
  • The docs use size="6" on the SubTitle. The proposal's example had size="7", which isn't a SubTitle size.

Docs

The API page has Usage, Accessibility, Related Components and Additional Resources by hand, and the generated Overview, Import, Props and CSS & Sass Variables. The components guide gets a ### HoverCard section, the homepage a card in EnhancedAddons with its own icon, the library guide's extras table a name, and the Popover and Tooltip pages a link.

The running-text example on the API page is a plain code block rather than a live one. The live examples render inside a shadow root, and a card portaled to <body> lands outside it, where none of the preview's styles reach, so it showed up as bare text over the next code block. Popover's appendToBody example on its page has the same problem today. That's the docs preview, not the components, and it probably wants its own issue. The InRunningText story shows the real thing.

What it doesn't do

  • Open on click or long press. That's Popover. On touch, a tap opens it only with openOnTap, and otherwise the trigger does its own thing.
  • Trap focus or move it into the card.
  • Track a diagonal pointer path. The close delay covers the gap.
  • Delay groups, one card shared by several triggers, or an arrow.
  • Centered or side placements. It takes the corners useAnchoredPosition knows.
  • Stay mounted while closed, or measure a portaled card again when its content changes size, same as Popover.
  • Touch Tooltip. Tooltip still isn't hoverable or dismissible with Escape, and whether it picks up this hook is its own issue.

Tests

  • HoverCard.test.tsx uses fake timers for the delays and covers the open and close delays, the pointer crossing the gap onto the card within closeDelay (and going straight from trigger to card), a touch pointer and the focus a tap brings not opening it, keyboard focus opening it and press focus not, keyboard focus on the trigger or any focus in the card holding it open whatever the pointer does (a control clicked in the card included), press focus on the trigger holding nothing, Tab past an inline card closing it, Escape from the trigger, from the card and from elsewhere while hovered, Escape inside an open Popover and inside an open Modal closing only the card, Escape with one card inside another closing the inner one first (in place and portaled, opened one after the other and in the same commit) and handing focus back to the inner trigger, who Escape belongs to (a field elsewhere gets the key after the card closes, a Modal opened from a button in the card closes on it, focus in the card or on its trigger or nowhere keeps it), the card focus is in closing before one that opened after it, focus in a portaled inner card holding the outer one, no reopen when focus comes back to the trigger after Escape and a fresh hover reopening it, controlled open and onOpenChange (after the delay, right away on Escape, and not for a state it's already in), an action inside the card closing it and handing focus back, placement and auto flipping, appendToBody with fixed coordinates, the wrapper's own handlers still running, openOnTap (a tap opens it at once and it stays with no timer, a second tap on the trigger, a tap outside and Escape close it, a tap inside keeps it, the outside listener there only while a tap holds it open and gone on close and unmount, the trigger's own tap action still running, a turned-down tap forgotten whether or not the caller renders its answer, a tap-opened card closed another way forgotten too, focus rules unchanged, mouse and pen unchanged with the prop on, a tap doing nothing with it off, and nested cards in place and portaled), the development warning for a trigger that can't take focus itself (a link inside a span included, and not for a link that's hidden for now), with production reading nothing for it, the ConfigProvider classPrefix test, nothing firing after unmount, an iframe, a shadow root, and hydration.

  • HoverCard.documentRoot.test.tsx renders under a React root on the document, the way a whole-page app hydrates, and checks that a control in the card that stops its press keeps a tapped card open, in place and portaled, and that a trigger that stops its press still closes on the second tap. It's a file of its own because React only puts its listeners on a document for the first root there.

  • HoverCard.ssr.test.tsx runs in the node environment: a closed card is the trigger in its wrapper and nothing else, an inline defaultOpen card renders with its aria-controls, and a portaled one leaves the card for the client.

  • HoverCard.styles.test.tsx compiles the real partial under a prefix and checks the placement, the gap variable, the variables declared on the card for a portaled one, that nothing sets pointer-events: none, and the reduced-motion rule.

  • useHoverOpen.test.tsx drives the hook on its own: the delays, asking the browser through :focus-visible (shown, not shown, and a browser that throws on the selector), Escape stopping at the document while open and passing through while closed, Escape with more than one open closing the one that opened last and cancelling the ones waiting, the latest onOpenChange getting called, stable handlers, no trigger, the focus handback not counting as focus, the document listeners: none while closed, and one shared Escape listener per document from an open on its way until it closes, and an Escape between the ask to open and the render that shows it taking the ask back, including one where the parent's state update hasn't rendered yet, an ask a caller turns down without rendering lapsing once the event is over, and no timer left after unmount.

  • The export list and the prefix sweep take the new component.

  • I made sure the tests can fail. I knocked out the important lines in the hook one at a time (the stopPropagation, the touch check, the modality check, the handback guard, the pointer reset on close, the "already in that state" check, the reset on close, the unmount cleanup, the shared listener's reference count, picking the card that opened last, the focus and containment rules, who keeps the key, taking back an ask to open, aria-expanded following the card, the development check asking isDev() first, the focusable-trigger check, each part of the tap rule, and a few more) and each one turned something red.

  • Coverage on HoverCard.tsx and useHoverOpen.ts is 100% on every metric, and bulma-ui as a whole stays over its bar.

  • React 18: I ran the HoverCard, hook, Popover and prefix-sweep suites against React 18.3.1 as well as 19, and they pass on both.

  • Outside jest, I ran the built stories in Chromium, plus a scratch page with a card in a Popover panel and a card inside a card: hover, the gap, Tab into the inline card, a link clicked in the card keeping it open after the pointer leaves, a click elsewhere closing it, Escape and the handback, focus coming back, a click on the trigger, focus a script moves after a click (no card), a Popover opened by a click that focuses a card's trigger (no card) and opened by Enter (card), Escape closing the card before the Popover, nested cards closing one Escape at a time with focus coming back to the inner trigger, focus in a portaled inner card holding both open after the pointer leaves, Escape with focus in a field elsewhere closing the card and reaching the field, a Modal opened from a button in the card closing on Escape, a touch tap, appendToBody in running text, and reduced motion, with no console errors. The story screenshots look right in light and dark.

  • With touch emulation in Chromium (Playwright's hasTouch), on the built TouchOpen story: a tap opens the card at once and it stays, a tap inside keeps it, a tap outside, a second tap on the trigger and Escape close it, and a tap opens nothing on a story without the prop. With a mouse on the same story, a click opens nothing, hover opens after the delay, and leaving closes it.

pnpm all passes locally.

Listings

The skill edits are small: the custom-component and layout-scaffold skills send hover previews to HoverCard next to where they send panels to Popover, and say when openOnTap fits, the theming skill's CSS variables reference lists the card's variables, and the optimize skill's modular-build list has the partial. Under "What goes stale" that's editing a skill, so cursor.directory and ClawHub keep their copies of the old text, and the Tessl Registry and Skills Directory keep their old scans, until someone refreshes them. The edits also move the plugin's version, which the entries that pin it only pick up when they're updated. No skill is added or renamed, so nothing that names or counts the skills changes.

Closes #1028
Part of #778

… focus

A card that previews what's behind a link or a button: a person's
avatar and team on a username, a summary on a link to a repo. Tooltip
can't hold anything clickable and Popover opens on a click and takes
focus, so neither covered it.

It's its own component rather than a mode on Popover. The hover logic
lives in an internal useHoverOpen hook, which decides when to ask for
open and closed and knows nothing about ARIA or placement. Pointer
enter and leave and keyboard focus open it after openDelay, and
closeDelay covers the gap so the pointer can move onto the card. Touch
and the focus a press brings don't count: focus counts when the last
input was a key, since jsdom can't tell :focus-visible from :focus.
Escape closes it from a capture-phase listener on the document and
stops there, so a Popover or Modal around it stays open. When the card
closes with focus inside, focus goes back to the trigger without
opening it again.

HoverCard is a thin component around the hook. The trigger keeps its
own role and gets aria-expanded, plus aria-controls while the card is
on the page, and the card is a plain element with an id and no role.
Placement and appendToBody reuse useAnchoredPosition, marginGap,
Portal and useIsHydrated as they are, so Popover, useAnchoredPosition,
PickerPopover and _popover.scss are unchanged. The styles register
their variables on the card, work under a class prefix, and drop the
fade-in under reduced motion.

Part of #778
…reviews to it

The API page covers placement, the delays, controlled use and a trigger
in running text, and its Accessibility section walks the WCAG Content
on Hover or Focus conditions. The components guide gets a section, the
homepage a card with its icon, the library guide's extras table a name,
and the Popover and Tooltip pages a link. The comparison matrix's Hover
card row now credits bestax.

The custom-component and layout-scaffold skills send hover previews to
HoverCard next to where they send panels to Popover, the theming skill
lists the card's variables, and the modular-build list has the partial.

deep-review: fresh

This is a new component, so the PR is wide. Review the hand-written parts in full: bulma-ui/src/components/HoverCard.tsx, the internal bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts, their tests, the story, _hovercard.scss, the API page's hand-written sections, the guide and listing edits, the matrix row and the skill edits. Check the behaviour against #1028's spec and acceptance criteria, and confirm Popover.tsx, useAnchoredPosition.ts, PickerPopover.tsx and _popover.scss have no diff. The API page's props region, the files under bestax-mcp/data/ and the component catalog are generated output, so judge them through the generator and spot-check rather than reading each line. Post every finding, advisory included, as its own thread.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1028 requires that touch and trigger clicks must not open or toggle HoverCard. The reviewed implementation adds the public openOnTap prop and touch handlers that open on a trigger tap and close on a later tap or outside press. The default remains disabled, but the opt-in behavior still conflicts with the stated issue requirement. The other reported HoverCard requirements have supporting implementation and test evidence.

Resolution

Remove openOnTap and its touch-open behavior, documentation, story coverage, and related generated or skill guidance. Alternatively, update the active acceptance criteria for #1028 to explicitly allow this opt-in behavior before treating it as compliant.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The openOnTap API and its touch-toggle implementation extend beyond issue #1028, which requires touch not to open or toggle the card. The associated touch story, tests, documentation, and skill guidance support that out-of-scope behavior. The remaining component, test, documentation, and metadata changes are connected to the HoverCard objective.

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🔵 Advisory Accessibility Pointer focus inside the card doesn't hold it open: the card closes under a focused control and relocates focus to the trigger, against #1028's "no timer closes a card that's hovered or focused" bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:196
2 🔵 Advisory Accessibility A non-focusable trigger yields hover-only content with no keyboard path, and nothing warns — the sibling Popover repairs and warns in the comparable case bulma-ui/src/components/HoverCard.tsx:207
3 🔵 Advisory Performance Two capture-phase document listeners per mounted instance, open or closed, so the cost scales with the list-of-triggers usage the docs recommend bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:144
4 🔵 Advisory Correctness The new Tooltip to HoverCard cross-link never reaches the MCP index: the page's heading is ## Related, and the generator matches ^Related Components$ docs/docs/api/components/tooltip.md:292

Overall: Sound, and unusually well evidenced for a new component. I verified the headline claim empirically — Popover.tsx, useAnchoredPosition.ts, PickerPopover.tsx and _popover.scss have a genuinely empty diff against main, and the five relevant suites run green together (145 tests, HoverCard.tsx and useHoverOpen.ts at 100% on all four metrics, Popover's own suite included and untouched). I traced the held / pointerIn / keyboardIn / focusInFloating machine through every transition in the spec and could not break it: the early return on held === s.held and the !open layout-effect reset together give the "a pointer or focus still inside doesn't open it again" rule without a stuck-open or stuck-closed state. The Escape design is the subtle part and it is right for the reason the PR gives — useHoverOpen.test.tsx:175 proves a capture-phase listener on the document stops a bubble-phase listener on that same node, which is exactly how Modal.tsx:516 is registered, so preventDefault() alone would not have sufficed. The riskiest part is the hook's state machine under compositions nobody tested (two cards on a page, a trigger that remounts), and the human should look first at finding 1, since it is the one place the shipped behaviour and the shipped prose disagree.

Everything the definition of done lists is present and correct: five artifacts plus the SSR and styles suites, the SCSS on the register-vars pattern with the variables declared on the card (so a portaled card keeps them), _index.scss, the SCSS_SOURCES entry, the components guide section, the EnhancedAddons card and icon, the extras table, and the matrix. I checked the matrix cell against the row encoding comment at componentComparison.js:565 — capability, bestax, Mantine, ReactBootstrap, MUI, react-bulma-components, Chakra, shadcn — and HoverCard landed in the bestax column, leaving the other six cells as they were. No eslint-plugin metadata row is needed (DEPRECATED_PROPS, TEXT_ALIAS_COLOR_ELEMENTS and BULMA_COMPONENT_CLASSES are each keyed on something HoverCard has none of), sidebars.js autogenerates api/, and themeable-components.md needs no row because HoverCard ships no color or size modifier, same as Popover. The generated output spot-checks clean: propCount: 10 and exampleCount: 5 match the interface and the page's five Usage examples, and all eleven CSS variables appear in the catalog's variable-to-component map.

Residual risk:

  • A hover branch leaking into Popover — refuted. The diff over the four named files is empty, and Popover.test.tsx passes in the same run as the four new suites.
  • The card swallowing Escape from something it shouldn't — refuted for the two cases that matter (HoverCard.test.tsx:470 inside an open Popover, :484 inside an open Modal, each needing a second press to close the outer layer) and for the closed case (useHoverOpen.test.tsx:175). Open as a bounded trade-off: while any card is open, preventDefault() plus stopPropagation() at document capture consumes Escape page-wide, including a native dialog's close request. That is the design the issue asked for.
  • Hydration mismatch, or a portal arriving one commit late and never being measured — refuted. useIsHydrated is a useSyncExternalStore whose client snapshot is a constant, so a Portal mounting after hydration gets true on its first render; the card is in the DOM in the same commit that flips cardMounted, which is the commit useAnchoredPosition's layout effect re-runs on. Both hydration tests pass with console.error spied and never called.
  • Stale ownerDocument — open, named inside finding 3. The document is resolved once at mount with empty deps, so a tree moved into an iframe after mount keeps listening on the old one. Not reachable through the public API today.
  • onPointerLeave not filtering pointerType — open, unposted. onPointerEnter ignores touch but onPointerLeave does not, so on a hybrid device a touch gesture over the trigger clears pointerIn while the mouse still rests there, closing a card the mouse opened. Needs a mouse and a finger on the same element; too marginal for a thread of its own.
  • RTL and the physical corner rules — refuted as a new risk: _hovercard.scss:79-86 is line for line _popover.scss:86-93, and the only direction-sensitive additions are text-align: start (logical) and block-direction margins. Physical corners are the existing PickerPosition contract, not something this PR introduces.
  • Docs preview — open and acknowledged in the PR body: the appendToBody example on the API page is a static fence because the live preview renders in a shadow root that a portaled card escapes. Same defect as Popover's page today, with no tracking issue filed yet. The InRunningText story is the working demonstration.

🏄 Dude, this one's a clean drop-in — paddled out, caught the wave, and didn't splash a single drop on Popover. Four little ripples worth watching, none of 'em gonna wipe you out. Ship it.

Focus anywhere in the card now holds it open, however it got there, so a
button clicked inside it stays put when the pointer moves away. Only
opening from the trigger needs keyboard focus, and focus a press puts on
the trigger holds nothing. Whatever held the card open has to leave and
come back once it closes, so a fresh hover opens it after Escape even
with focus still resting on the trigger.

A development build warns once when Tab can't reach the trigger or
anything inside it, naming the fix: a link or a button, or tabIndex={0}.
HoverCard still adds no role and no tab stop of its own.

The Escape listener is on the document only while the card is open or
about to open. Telling a key from a press has to know the last input
before focus arrives, so that tracker is one pair of listeners per
document, shared by every card and gone with the last one.

# Severity Area Thread Location Outcome
1 🔵 Advisory Accessibility Pointer focus inside the card did not hold it open bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:289 ✅ Verified fixed
2 🔵 Advisory Accessibility A trigger that cannot take focus failed silently bulma-ui/src/components/HoverCard.tsx:214 ✅ Verified fixed
3 🔵 Advisory Performance Two document listeners per mounted card bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:60 ✅ Verified fixed
4 🔵 Advisory Correctness Tooltip cross-link never reached the MCP index docs/docs/api/components/tooltip.md:287 ✅ Verified fixed

What I checked

  • 1 — onFocus sets focusIn = s.focusInFloating || modality.keyboard, so focus a press put in the card holds it; the !open layout effect clears pointerIn and focusIn, so a closed card needs its holder to leave and come back; the API page Persistent bullet says focus inside the card holds it.
  • 2 — a dev-only effect calls warnOnce when firstTabStop(rootRef.current) finds nothing, re-running on each cardMounted change. The reasoned decline on adding a bare tab stop or a button role (no activation to promise) is accepted.
  • 3 — watchModality keeps one ref-counted keydown/pointerdown pair per document shared by all hooks; the Escape listener attaches only while open || opening and re-reads the trigger document each time.
  • 4 — the heading is now ## Related Components and the regenerated Tooltip.json lists Button, HoverCard, Icon and Popover. The missing ## Additional Resources stays its own change, as the thread allowed.

Tests: HoverCard.test.tsx, useHoverOpen.test.tsx and Popover.test.tsx — 154 passed, 0 failed.

Overall: This pass settled threads and reviewed no commits. All four previously open advisory threads are verified fixed against the current code and resolved, so nothing of mine is left open and no new findings were raised in this mode. A reader who wants the post-fix code reviewed afresh should ask for one with a deep-review: fresh steer.

Residual risk: none identified for the settled threads — each fix was read in the current source and exercised by the three suites above. Verify mode raises no new findings by design, so the code the fixes introduced (the per-document modality table lifetime, the dev warning style reads) has not been re-reviewed here.

🏄 Four advisories paddled in, four rode all the way to the beach — the focus-holds-the-card fix is the clean one, and the shared listener table means a feed full of hover cards is not dragging an anchor. All settled, nothing left bobbing out back.

The custom-component skill's Portal section now names HoverCard next to Popover,
and the focus advice after it read as if it applied to HoverCard too. It applies
to an overlay you build that takes focus. A HoverCard moves none.

A verify pass settled every thread on e508a2e. Since then one commit scopes the custom-component skill's Portal focus advice to overlays that take focus, from a CodeRabbit thread, so a6324a5 needs a fresh review behind it. Review it in full as before: HoverCard, useHoverOpen and their tests, the story and partial, the hand-written docs and skill edits, and Popover's files still showing no diff. Judge the generated API props region, bestax-mcp/data/ and the catalog through the generator. Post every finding, advisory included, as its own thread.

A touch screen has no hover, so a phone or tablet never opened a
HoverCard. openOnTap, off by default, opens the card at once on a tap on
the trigger. It stays open, with no hover timer, until a second tap on the
trigger, a press outside the trigger and the card, or Escape.

The press outside comes from a document listener that is there only
while a tap holds the card open. A press React brings to the wrapper, on
the trigger or anywhere in the card's tree, portals included, counts as
inside, so a tap in a nested card leaves the outer one open.

The tap still does whatever the trigger does, so the TSDoc says to turn
this on only for a trigger with no tap action of its own, the way Mantine
words it. Touch enter and leave still don't count as hover, and mouse and
pen work the same with the prop on. The hook takes it as an optional
option, and its handlers gain onPointerDown and onPointerUp.

The story gains a TouchOpen example and an openOnTap control.

deep-review: fresh

8eca291 adds an opt-in, openOnTap. Touch was ignored by design, as Radix does and as Mantine does by default, but Mantine offers an opt-in, and this follows it. With the prop on, a touch tap on the trigger toggles the card at once. A second tap, a press outside (a document pointerdown listener attached only while a tap holds the card) or Escape closes it. The trigger's own tap action still runs, so the docs say to use it only on triggers with no tap action of their own. With the prop off nothing changes, and mouse and pen behave the same either way. Review HEAD_SHA in full, with this rule inside useHoverOpen as the new part, and Popover's files still showing no diff. Judge the generated API props region, bestax-mcp/data/ and the catalog through the generator. Post every finding, advisory included, as its own thread.

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🔵 Advisory Robustness Outside-press check is identity-only, so content in the card that calls stopPropagation() on its press closes the card — Popover ORs the same ref check with isEventInside and survives it bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:352
2 🔵 Advisory Correctness A refused tap is never forgotten when a controlled caller's refusal produces no commit, so s.asked/s.tappedIn stick and a later programmatic open inherits tap semantics bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:366

Overall: openOnTap is a tight, well-contained addition: 80 lines in the hook, a toggle gated behind three conditions (openOnTap && pointerType === 'touch' && inTrigger(target)), and a document listener that genuinely only exists while a tap holds the card — the listener-count test at HoverCard.test.tsx:953 drives attach/detach across tap, hover-open, re-tap and unmount. I confirmed the untouched-Popover claim: Popover.tsx, useAnchoredPosition.ts, PickerPopover.tsx and _popover.scss have no diff, and the only shared-file change is exporting isTabbableKind, which index.ts does not re-export, so the public surface is unchanged. All four new suites plus the Popover, prefix-sweep and export suites pass — 363 tests, 100% on every metric for both HoverCard.tsx and useHoverOpen.ts. Every generator is fresh: gen:mcp:check, gen:catalog:check and gen:api-docs all left the tree clean, check:conformance is 24/24, and the generated props region, bestax-mcp/data/components/HoverCard.json (11 props, 6 examples, the openOnTap description verbatim from the TSDoc) and the catalog 95-component count all line up. The riskiest part is the one place the tap rule leans on something outside its own control — React's synthetic dispatch reaching the wrapper, and a commit following an ask — which is where both advisories sit. Look at #1 first: it is a one-import fix and restores parity with Popover's existing guard.

Residual risk:

  • A tap inside the card read as outside — posted as finding #1. The ref-identity check is the single gate; refuted for every path I could find except a React synthetic stopPropagation() in the card's tree. Shadow DOM is safe (the check compares the event object, not the retargeted target); imperatively-mounted third-party content inside the card is safe (React dispatches from the nearest fiber ancestor); portaled content is safe (preparePortalMount attaches React's listeners to the portal container, and the nested portaled test at HoverCard.test.tsx:1057 proves it in jsdom).
  • A stale tap surviving into a later open — posted as finding #2. Uncontrolled use is refuted: setInternalOpen guarantees the answering commit on every ask.
  • A double-close from the second tap — refuted. The second tap's pointerdown sets pressedInside before the document listener reads it, so only onPointerUp closes; the "stays open with no timer, then closes on a second tap" test covers it.
  • A hover timer closing a tap-opened card — refuted on pure touch: onPointerEnter and onPointerLeave both return early on pointerType === 'touch', so pointerIn never flips, settle() sees no change and schedules nothing (verified by the advance(60_000) at HoverCard.test.tsx:892). On a hybrid device a mouse that genuinely hovered and left does close it after closeDelay, which is the hover rule working rather than the tap rule failing.
  • A pending open timer colliding with a tap — refuted by trace: the tap's ask leaves s.held and s.opening as they were, and when the timer fires now.open !== held is false, so it asks for nothing.
  • Open, still: a touch drag ending on the trigger. Touch pointers get implicit pointer capture, so a finger that presses the trigger, drags away and lifts delivers pointerup with target still the trigger, and the card opens. Ordinary page scrolling fires pointercancel instead and is safe — the hook has no pointercancel handler and needs none, since there is nothing to unwind. The exposure is a region that suppresses scrolling and handles the gesture itself, where a swipe starting on the trigger would open the card. Nothing in the diff tracks movement between down and up, and no test covers it.
  • Iframe plus appendToBody together — named as open, and unchanged from Popover's design: s.tappedIn is the tap target's ownerDocument while Portal renders into the page's <body>, so for a tree inside an iframe the outside-press listener and the card sit in different documents and the press close is a silent no-op. Escape is scoped the same way.
  • openOnTap goes beyond what #1028 listed under what it does not do ("Open on click, tap or long press. That's Popover."). The PR body argues the case and the prop is off by default, so this is a scope note for the maintainer rather than a defect.

🏄 Dude, this one's dialed — a clean little opt-in that lets phones in on the party without wrecking the mouse-and-keyboard lineup, 100% coverage, every generator fresh, and Popover never even got splashed. Couple of mellow notes bobbing out past the break about presses that get stopped short and taps nobody answered, but nothing you cannot paddle around. Good to go. 🤙

…let a refused ask lapse

The press outside check only knew a press was inside when React brought
it to the wrapper. Under a React root on the document, as an app that
hydrates the whole page has, React's listener and the card's share the
document, so a press something in the card stopped still reached the
card's listener and closed it. A press whose path runs through the
trigger or the card now counts as inside too, the way Popover checks
it, with the shared isEventInside.

An ask to open stayed pending until a commit answered it, and a
controlled caller that turns it down without rendering never commits.
The ask now lapses once the event that made it is over, by which time
React has rendered any answer the caller set. A refused tap no longer
leaves the outside press listener waiting for the next open, and a
refused hover ask no longer keeps the Escape listener on.

# Thread Severity Area Outcome
1 Outside-press check is identity-only, so a press the card’s own content stops closes it (bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:376) 🔵 Advisory Robustness ✅ Verified fixed — resolved
2 A refused tap is never forgotten when the caller’s refusal produces no commit (bulma-ui/src/helpers/useHoverOpen.ts:326) 🔵 Advisory Correctness ✅ Verified fixed — resolved

Overall: This pass settled threads and reviewed no commits. Both open advisories were fixed in 7532715d, and both fixes hold up under inspection and test: the outside-press check now ORs the ref-identity test with isEventInside against the trigger and the floating element, matching Popover.tsx:284 and sharing helpers/shadowDom; and the ask now lapses through a 0 ms askTimer routed from both the tap and the delay path, with the unmount cleanup clearing it. Each is covered by a test that exercises the real failure shape rather than the previous hand-supplied commit — HoverCard.documentRoot.test.tsx builds a React root on document, which is the only configuration where a stopped synthetic press still reaches the card’s own listener, and forgets a tap its caller turns down now runs the no-commit variant. The full bulma-ui suite is green (174 suites, 7273 tests).

Residual risk:

  • The press-inside check for content the card portals elsewhere — still ref-only, as Popover’s is. Refuted as a new exposure: it is the pre-existing shared behaviour the fix explicitly matched, and the reply says so.
  • An ask honoured asynchronously (a controlled caller that opens in a microtask or a later timer) now lapses before the open lands, so that open carries no tap semantics. Inherent to the expiry shape the finding asked for, and the narrower of the two failure modes; noted here rather than reopened.
  • entryRef.cancel() does not clear askTimer, so a pending timer survives an Escape-cancelled ask. Checked the body: it reads latestRef.current.open (false), then re-clears already-cleared asked/tappedIn and re-runs listenForEscape() — a no-op. Refuted.

🏄 Two mellow advisories came in on the last set, both got patched clean, and both picked up real tests that actually wipe out without the fix — no hand-waving. 7273 tests rolled through without a wobble. This one’s good to paddle out, dude.
