What?

Runs the existing UCX TestTransfer gtests as additional variants with NIXL_UCX_SGL_ENABLE=y.

Why?

The UCX plugin's SGL path had no gtest coverage.

How?

Adds an sglEnabled flag to nixlTestParam and a NIXL_INSTANTIATE_TEST_SGL macro that sets it, with the four new instantiations gated on HAVE_UCX_SGL_API.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Summary

  • Tests
    • Added test coverage for scatter-gather list (SGL) transfers using UCX.
    • Expanded validation across configurations with progress threads enabled or disabled and different worker and thread setups.
    • SGL transfer tests run only when the required UCX support is available, keeping test coverage aligned with supported environments.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — Clang Format Check · commit 7467a293

TL;DR: The "Clang Format Check" GHA job failed because test/gtest/common.h isn't clang-format-19 compliant — the NIXL_INSTANTIATE_TEST_SGL macro's line-continuation backslashes are misaligned. Run clang-format-19 -i test/gtest/common.h (and any other flagged files) and commit.

Full analysis

Summary: GitHub Actions "clang-format" job exited with code 1 because a modified C++ header does not match the project's clang-format style.

Root cause: In PR #2164 (commit 7467a29), the newly added/edited NIXL_INSTANTIATE_TEST_SGL macro in test/gtest/common.h (around line 197) uses backslash continuations aligned to a narrower column than the .clang-format config dictates. clang-format-diff-19 -p1 -style=file produced a reformatting diff (re-aligning every \ to a wider column), and the workflow step treats any non-empty diff as a failure. This is a style violation, not a code/logic defect.

Implicated commit: [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (PR #2164, branch gtest-ucx-sgl-variant)

File: test/gtest/common.h:197 (the NIXL_INSTANTIATE_TEST_SGL macro definition)

Suggested fix: Locally run the same formatter over the modified files and commit the result:

clang-format-19 -i test/gtest/common.h test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp
git commit -am "Apply clang-format to gtest SGL macro"

This will re-align the macro continuation backslashes to the expected column and clear the check. (Only common.h was flagged in the diff, but formatting both modified files is harmless and safest.)

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 1cacb702

TL;DR: The build failed in the "Sync Container Image" stage because the SSH connection to the Slurm head node (dlcluster.nvidia.com, 10.176.8.138) was dropped immediately ("Connection closed … port 22", ssh exit 255) so srun never ran — an infra/SSH flake, not a code defect; the fix is to retry (or multiplex) the SSH-based slurm.run call.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage 184 "Sync Container Image" of nixl-ci-gpu-vr #632 aborted after 2.5 s with script returned exit code 255 — the ssh to the Slurm login node was closed before srun could start.

Root cause: Pure SSH transport failure on the CI side, not a test or build failure. Evidence from the logs:

  • Build, image build and podman push of nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:632 all succeeded (whole-build log, 08:39:46).
  • "Allocate Environment" succeeded over the same SSH path at 08:40:31: salloc: Granted job allocation 3029450, node vr-nvl72-ts4b-l11-130-c14, submit host ipp2-2176.ipp2u1.colossus.nvidia.com (10.176.8.138).
  • ~2 s later the next SSH session (for srun --jobid=3029450 … --container-image=…nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:632 bash -c 'hostname; nvidia-smi -L …') was terminated by the peer: Connection closed by 10.176.8.138 port 22 at 08:40:34.555. ssh returns 255 on transport errors, which is exactly the exit code 255 Jenkins reported.
  • This is a drop, not a hang: the stage ran 2 521 ms against a 30-min timeout, and the largest gap between log lines in the stage is under a second, so no timeout/wall-clock increase is warranted.
  • The login node was already behaving oddly in the previous session (limit: stacksize: Can't set limit from the login shell), consistent with a login node refusing/aborting new sessions (sshd MaxStartups/per-source throttling or resource limits) when two connections are opened back to back.

The allocation 3029450 was correctly cleaned up afterwards (scancel 3029450 in the pipeline_stop stage), so nothing was leaked.

Implicated commit: unknown — no code change implicated; the PR's commit 1cacb70 (gtest-ucx-sgl-variant) compiled and packaged cleanly, and the failure is in CI infrastructure. For context, the stage itself was introduced by b84e39e "ci: import the Slurm container image before the timed test stages (#2378)" (NirWolfer), which added a second, immediately-following SSH/srun round trip after salloc.

File: .ci/jenkins pipeline definition for nixl-ci-gpu-vr — the slurm.run(... testScript: "hostname; nvidia-smi -L || echo no-gpu-visible; df -h /" ...) call in the "Sync Container Image" stage (helper slurm.run lives in the external swx-jenkins-lib).

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-run the build — this is a transient SSH flake and should pass.
  2. Make it non-fatal permanently: wrap the slurm.run/slurm.allocation SSH invocations in a retry(3) with a short backoff, and treat ssh exit 255 specifically as retryable (the same way the image push already loops 6 times with backoff in the Docker stage). The image-sync probe in particular is a cheap, idempotent command and is safe to retry.
  3. Reduce connection churn to the login node by multiplexing: add -o ControlMaster=auto -o ControlPersist=60s -o ControlPath=~/.ssh/cm-%r@%h:%p (plus -o ServerAliveInterval=30) to the ssh invocations in the slurm helper, so salloc and the subsequent srun reuse one session instead of opening a fresh connection a second apart.
  4. Ask IT to check sshd MaxStartups/MaxSessions and PAM/ulimit health on dlcluster.nvidia.com (10.176.8.138) — the limit: stacksize: Can't set limit message on the preceding login suggests the login node's session setup is degraded.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu · commit 1cacb702

TL;DR: The build didn't fail on any test — the Run DL Python tests stage died because the SSH to the slurm login node was dropped at connect (Connection closed by 10.176.8.138 port 22, ssh exit 255) before .gitlab/test_python.sh ever started; fix is to retry/reuse the SSH connection in the slurm.run pipeline helper rather than failing the build on a single transient drop.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage 207 "Run DL Python tests" failed in 1.9 s with script returned exit code 255 after the SSH to dlcluster.nvidia.com was closed immediately by the remote sshd.

Root cause: Infrastructure/transport failure, not a code defect. Timeline from the stage log:

  • 09:14:05 — previous stage's srun over the same SSH path succeeded (printed gb-nvl-057-compute02, 4× GB200, df -h), so the allocation (slurm job 3030016) and the container image were healthy.
  • 09:14:07.336 — next stage opens a brand-new ssh ... svc-nixl@dlcluster.nvidia.com ... srun --jobid=3030016 ... '.gitlab/test_python.sh /opt/nixl'.
  • 09:14:07.593 — Connection closed by 10.176.8.138 port 22 (257 ms later).

The connection was terminated by the login node's sshd during session setup, before any command output — the classic signature of sshd connection-rate limiting / MaxStartups dropping, or login-node resource pressure (the successful connections also show limit: stacksize: Can't set limit from the login shell). No build output, no test output, no NIXL log line was produced, so nothing in commit [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] / PR #2164 (gtest-ucx-sgl-variant) is implicated — the build and image stages all succeeded, including the full meson/ninja build and ninja install. ssh exit 255 propagated as script returned exit code 255, and the pipeline helper has no retry, so one transient SSH drop killed the whole build (the pipeline then correctly scancel-ed job 3030016).

Implicated commit: unknown — no source change is implicated; the failure is in the Jenkins→slurm SSH hop.

File: swx-jenkins-lib slurm.run step (invoked from the nixl-ci-dl-gpu pipeline, log line Calling slurm.run with args=[... testScript:.gitlab/test_python.sh /opt/nixl ...]); the test script .gitlab/test_python.sh itself never executed.

Suggested fix: Make the SSH hop resilient in slurm.run (and slurm.allocation/stopAllForBuild):

  1. Wrap the ssh invocation in a retry loop — e.g. 3–5 attempts with exponential backoff — and treat exit code 255 (and the Connection closed by ... port 22 / kex_exchange_identification family) as retryable, since the slurm allocation is still valid and the srun can simply be re-issued.
  2. Add -o ConnectionAttempts=5 -o ConnectTimeout=30 -o ServerAliveInterval=60 -o ServerAliveCountMax=5.
  3. Better, multiplex: open one ControlMaster=auto -o ControlPersist=... session per build and reuse it for allocate/sync/test/cancel instead of opening a fresh TCP+auth handshake per stage (three new connections within ~8 minutes is what trips sshd throttling).
  4. Ask the cluster admins to confirm/raise MaxStartups and PerSourcePenalties on dlcluster.nvidia.com (10.176.8.138) for the CI service account.
  5. Re-run build #3106 to validate PR TEST/GTEST: Add SGL variants of the UCX transfer gtests #2164; this result carries no signal about the change under test.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-build-wheel · commit 1cacb702

TL;DR: The "Run vLLM sanity" stage died 0.3 s in because the SSH to the dlcluster.nvidia.com login node was dropped ("Connection closed by 10.176.8.138 port 22") — a transient login-node/SSH rejection, not a NIXL defect; the fix is to retry the ssh … srun invocation in the slurm pipeline helper instead of failing the build on exit 255.

Full analysis

Summary: Build #2520 failed in stage Run vLLM sanity (node 636) after 1.9 s with Connection closed by 10.176.8.138 port 22; the parallel Run SGLang sanity branch passed (gsm8k accuracy 0.955, [sanity:sglang] PASS).

Root cause: Infrastructure/CI-harness flake, not a code or test failure. The sanity test script never executed — the wrapper's ssh -o BatchMode=yes … svc-nixl@dlcluster.nvidia.com srun --jobid=3030403 … was closed by the remote sshd during handshake, so ssh returned 255 and the stage aborted. Evidence this is the login node and not the job/node:

  • The immediately preceding Sync Container Image stage used the same slurm allocation 3030403 on gb-nvl-057-compute02, imported the pyxis image and ran nvidia-smi successfully (09:20:34 → 09:22:14).
  • The failing SSH at 09:22:15 landed on login node 10.176.8.138 (= ipp2-2176.ipp2u1.colossus.nvidia.com); the SGLang branch's SSH three minutes later was round-robin'd to ipp1-3010 (10.117.7.243) and worked fine.
  • The same IP rejected a second, unrelated connection later in the build: in the pipeline_stop stage, scancel 3030388 also got Connection closed by 10.176.8.138 port 22 ("WARNING: Failed to stop job …"), while the next scancel 3030403 to a different login node succeeded. So that one login host was refusing connections for a window, hitting the build twice.
  • There is no hang: the largest gap in the failing stage is ~0.3 s, and the stage log contains no application output at all.

Implicated commit: none — the failure is unrelated to [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] / PR #2164 (that branch's SGLang sanity passed on the same wheel).

File: CI pipeline SSH wrapper in the shared library swx-jenkins-lib (slurm.run / slurm.stopAllForBuild, invoked from the Run vLLM sanity and pipeline_stop stages). The in-repo script .gitlab/test_vllm_sglang_sanity.sh was never reached.

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-run build core: strided-run span overflow bypasses registration bounds in prepXferDlist #2520 — this is a transient flake and should pass.
  2. Make the harness resilient: wrap the ssh … srun (and scancel) calls in slurm.run/slurm.stopAllForBuild in a retry loop that retries specifically on ssh's exit code 255 / "Connection closed by" / "kex_exchange_identification", e.g. 3–5 attempts with exponential backoff, and add -o ConnectTimeout=15 -o ConnectionAttempts=3 -o ServerAliveInterval=30. Note the existing in-container retry loop only retries on "address already in use" inside the container, so an SSH-level failure fails the whole branch on the first try.
  3. Also make scancel failures non-fatal/retried so a dropped SSH doesn't leave slurm allocations (e.g. 3030388) leaked on the cluster, and report the rejecting login node (10.176.8.138) to the cluster admins to check sshd MaxStartups/MaxSessions and PAM/health on that host.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 1cacb702

TL;DR: The four new ucx_sgl* gtest variants fail on TestTransfer.remoteMDFromSocket because that is the only transfer test that uses GPU memory, and UCX cannot select a protocol for an SGL put from CUDA to CUDA (cannot find remote protocol for: ... put from sgl cuda/GPU0 to cuda), which kills the endpoint and makes postXferReq fail. Either exclude VRAM from the SGL variants (or skip that case) or make the UCX plugin fall back to the non-SGL path for VRAM/cuda descriptors.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Run CPP tests" (node 253) failed: gtest-parallel reported 4 failed tests, all TestTransfer.remoteMDFromSocket/0 under ucx_sgl, ucx_sgl_no_pt, ucx_sgl_threadpool, ucx_sgl_threadpool_no_pt; srun exited with code 42.

Root cause: In each failure the log shows, on vr-nvl72-prd-l11-166-c06:

proto_reconfig.c:104 UCX ERROR cannot find remote protocol for:
    agent_0 intra-node cfg#1 | put from sgl cuda/GPU0 to cuda
E nixl_agent.cpp:1319 postXferReq: remote agent 'agent_1' was disconnected after transfer request creation
../test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:478: Failure   (status != NIXL_SUCCESS/NIXL_IN_PROG)
../test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:391: Failure   notif_list.size()=0 vs expected 1

UCX's protocol selection has no SGL protocol for an intra-node CUDA→CUDA put, so the endpoint is flagged failed, NIXL reports the peer disconnected, the post fails and no notification arrives. remoteMDFromSocket is the only TestTransfer case that uses device memory — test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:711 picks m_gpu_device ? VRAM_SEG : DRAM_SEG, while RandomSizes/ManyDescriptorsPayload/notification tests are all DRAM_SEG and pass in the same SGL variants. The non-SGL ucx* variants of the same test pass. So the failure is specific to the SGL-enabled code path combined with VRAM, newly exercised by this branch's variants (NIXL_INSTANTIATE_TEST_SGL, test_transfer.cpp:825-828, with NIXL_UCX_SGL_ENABLE=y set at test_transfer.cpp:159). Secondary observation: each failure burns ~110 s because after the failed post the status loop still spins retry_count=10000 × 10 ms (test_transfer.cpp:556-557).

Implicated commit: 9a2208a3 "TEST/GTEST: Add SGL variants of the UCX transfer gtests" (Michal Shalev), with d94ac060 "GTEST: Explicitly set NIXL_UCX_SGL_ENABLE in all variants" (Michal Shalev, 2026-11-03 08:13Z) immediately preceding this build.

File: test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:711 (VRAM selection) and test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:825-828 (SGL instantiations); failing assertions at test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:478 and :391.

Suggested fix: Decide which side owns the gap:

  • If SGL is not meant to cover device memory on the pinned UCX, keep remoteMDFromSocket on host memory for SGL runs — e.g. nixl_mem_t mem_type = (m_gpu_device && !isSglEnabled()) ? VRAM_SEG : DRAM_SEG; — or GTEST_SKIP() << "UCX has no SGL protocol for intra-node cuda->cuda" when isSglEnabled() && m_gpu_device, with a TODO referencing the UCX version that adds it.
  • If SGL is supposed to support VRAM, fix the plugin instead: don't build SGL requests for VRAM_SEG/cuda-IPC-reachable peers and fall back to the regular descriptor path, so protocol selection never sees put from sgl cuda -> cuda.

Also consider breaking the getXferStatus retry loop on the first non-success/non-in-progress status so a failed post reports in seconds instead of ~110 s.

Related: PR #2164 (the branch under test); possibly relevant SGL work: #2510, #2514.

Do not add a failing SGL VRAM variant.

remoteMDFromSocket selects VRAM_SEG when a GPU is present at Line 711. These instantiations therefore run a CUDA-to-CUDA SGL transfer. CI reports that UCX cannot select a protocol for this case, so all four new variants fail on GPU runners.

Skip or split this test for the unsupported SGL VRAM path. Keep SGL DRAM coverage and run the VRAM case only when UCX supports it.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-test-sanitizers · commit f3ba5367

TL;DR: The asan_ubsan sanitizer gtest run failed on MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote — the ETCD metadata backend arms its per-agent DELETE watcher after loading the remote MD and without a start revision, so a delete that lands in that window is never seen and the remote MD is never invalidated; arm the watcher before loadRemoteMD using the revision from the fetch. Unrelated to PR #2164.

Full analysis

Summary: nixl:sanitizer / gtest failed in the asan_ubsan "Test Sanitizer" stage (node 191): test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:314 — waitForRemoteMD(..., NIXL_ERR_NOT_FOUND) returned 0 (NIXL_SUCCESS) after burning the full 15 s sanitizer timeout ([ FAILED ] MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote (15611 ms)). The tsan variant passed the same test in 850 ms.

Root cause: A lost-watch-event race in the ETCD metadata backend, not a slow machine. In nixlEtcdMetadataBackend::fetchRemote the worker task calls ctx_.loadRemoteMD(blob, …) first and only then client_->setupAgentWatcher(remote_name) (line 413). The test's checkRemoteMD turns NIXL_SUCCESS the instant loadRemoteMD finishes, so the test immediately issues src->invalidateLocalMD(). setupAgentWatcher constructs etcd::Watcher(*etcd_, agent_prefix, process_response) (lines 296-298) with no start revision, so it only observes events created after the watch is established — a DELETE that lands in the gap between loadRemoteMD and watcher creation is dropped permanently, invalidatedAgents_ stays empty, processInvalidatedAgents never calls ctx.invalidateRemoteMD, and checkRemoteMD keeps returning NIXL_SUCCESS forever (hence the full-timeout failure). Note the other watch path, waitForMetadataFromEtcd, does this correctly — it passes response.index() as watch_index (lines 202-229). ASAN's slowdown simply widens the window; commit 21b6327 previously papered over the same flake by raising the timeout from 3 s to 15 s (kRemoteMdTimeout, md_manager.cpp:89-90), which is why 15 s is now exhausted rather than fixing it.

The SGL instantiations added by PR #2164 (ucx_sgl*/TestTransfer) all passed and run after MDManagerEtcdFixture, so they are not implicated.

Implicated commit: 2ff0105 "Metadata manager pr5 (#1930)" — aschwartz12 (introduced the backend/watcher ordering); 21b6327 "test: lengthen the md_manager remote-MD wait under sanitizers (#2349)" — Daniel Pressler (masked the symptom)

File: src/core/nixl_etcd_metadata_backend.cpp:413 (watcher armed too late) and src/core/nixl_etcd_metadata_backend.cpp:296-298 (etcd::Watcher created without a start revision)

Suggested fix:

  1. Make fetchMetadataFromEtcd return the revision it read (response.value().modified_index() / response.index(), already logged at line 185-186) and pass it into setupAgentWatcher, which should construct etcd::Watcher(*etcd_, agent_prefix, start_index, process_response) — mirroring waitForMetadataFromEtcd. This makes the DELETE observable even if it commits before the watch is live.
  2. Arm the watcher before ctx_.loadRemoteMD(...) in fetchRemote so the remote MD never becomes visible to callers while unwatched.
  3. Once fixed, consider reverting kRemoteMdTimeout back toward 3 s (md_manager.cpp:89) — the 15 s value is hiding, not solving, this race. Re-running the build will likely pass, so don't treat a green retry as evidence the bug is gone.

Related: PR #2164 (the build under test, not the cause); PR #2349 / commit 21b6327 (prior timeout bump for this same test); PR #2488 ("test: wait on the poll instead of sleeping in MetadataWorker gtests") touches the same timing-sensitive area.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu · commit f3ba5367

TL;DR: The build was aborted by Jenkins (exit 143) because the "Sync Container Image" stage hung for 29.5 minutes with zero output inside pyxis/enroot's docker-image import on gb-nvl-054-compute08 — a step that takes 4–6 min in neighbouring builds; the PR's code never ran, so this is an infra/image-sync hang, not a test failure.

Full analysis

Summary: nixl-ci-dl-gpu #3183 stage "Sync Container Image" (node 184) was killed at the pipeline's ~2 h limit while srun --container-image=...nixl-ci-dl-gpu-test:3183 was still importing the image; the enclosing Parallel stage (node 130) aborted after 7,117,924 ms.

Root cause: Timeline from the stage logs:

  • 09:35:08 — pyxis: importing docker image: il.artifactory.nvidia.com#/sw-nbu-swx-nixl-docker-local/ci/pr/aarch64/nixl-ci-dl-gpu-test:3183
  • 09:35:08 → 10:04:39 — 29 min 31 s with no log output at all (the largest gap in the whole build, and the entire remaining runtime)
  • 10:04:39 — "Sending interrupt signal to process" / "Killing processes" → script returned exit code 143

The same stage took 230,947 ms (#3181) and 334,872 ms (#3182) — ~4–6 minutes. So the import was hung, not legitimately slow: the enroot/pyxis import of the image onto the allocated node never progressed and produced no error. The image itself was built and pushed successfully at 08:22:46 in stage 149, so the artifact exists.

A contributing factor is the time budget: Allocate DL Environment (node 164) spent 08:22:53 → 09:34:33 (71 min) queued in slurm (salloc ... --immediate=14400, job allocation 3081953, node gb-nvl-054-compute08), leaving only ~30 min of the ~120 min pipeline budget for the actual work. ci: wait up to 4h for Slurm allocations (ee3ee61, #2573, NirWolfer) allows a queue wait longer than the whole Jenkins stage timeout, so any slow step after a long queue wait is guaranteed to be aborted mid-run rather than failing cleanly. Build #3182 already ran at 107 min of the 120 min budget.

Implicated commit: No code commit — the tested commit f3ba536 (branch gtest-ucx-sgl-variant, PR #2164) never executed. Infrastructure-timing contributor: ee3ee61 "ci: wait up to 4h for Slurm allocations" (#2573, NirWolfer).

File: CI slurm helper invoked as slurm.run in the "Sync Container Image" stage (pipeline log nixl-ci-dl-gpu #3183, node 184, lines at 09:34:40 / 09:35:08); allocation parameters set by slurm.allocation (node 164).

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-run the build — this is an environment hang, not a PR defect.
  2. Make the image sync fail fast instead of eating the pipeline budget: wrap the srun --container-image=... import in an explicit timeout (e.g. 15 min, ~3× the 4–6 min norm) plus a retry, so a stalled enroot import errors out with a diagnosable message rather than being SIGTERM'd by Jenkins.
  3. Investigate the node-side cause on gb-nvl-054-compute08: check for a stale enroot/pyxis cache lock or a half-written import left by an earlier aborted job (previous builds on this partition were also aborted near the time limit), and clear the enroot cache//run/enroot state for svc-nixl there.
  4. Reconcile the two timeouts: either budget the pipeline timeout to cover the 4 h --immediate window, or cap the salloc wait so that queue-wait + work fits inside the Jenkins stage timeout — currently a 71 min queue wait leaves too little slack to ever fail cleanly.

Related: #2573 (ci: wait up to 4h for Slurm allocations), #2414 (request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-dl-gpu), #2342 / #2410 (move to IL Artifactory, the registry being imported from). No existing issue found tracking pyxis import hangs.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit f3ba5367

TL;DR: The build didn't fail on code — the Slurm allocation stage sat in the queue for the full 4 h --immediate=14400 window on partition gb200nvl72_cx8 and salloc gave up with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out". Fix is CI-side: make allocation timeouts retry/abort gracefully instead of failing the PR, and request GPUs explicitly so the job isn't forced into whole-node exclusive mode.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate DL EP Environment" (node 164) failed after 14,419 s: salloc for job nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-2178 never got a GB200 node and exited, aborting the parallel branch build_helper_dl_ep/aarch64/1.

Root cause: Pure scheduling starvation on the external dlcluster.nvidia.com Slurm cluster, not a defect in the PR. Everything before this succeeded — UCX install, meson setup, all 370 ninja targets (including the new ucx_sgl.cpp / ucp_dt_local_sgl_t SGL-variant work from this branch), nixlbench, and the test image was built and pushed as nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-test:2178 at 08:22:15. One second later the pipeline entered the allocation stage:

  • 08:22:25 — salloc -N 1 -p gb200nvl72_cx8 --job-name=nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-2178 --immediate=14400 --time=02:30:00 --no-shell --account=blackwell
  • salloc: lua: Setting job to exclusive mode as no gpu count was specified
  • salloc: Pending job allocation 3081948 / job 3081948 queued and waiting for resources
  • 12:22:42 — salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

The single 4-hour gap is salloc legitimately blocking while its job sat in PENDING state — the job never started, so there was nothing to hang. "Connection timed out" is simply the message salloc prints when --immediate expires; it is not a network failure. The site's Lua job submit plugin forced the request to whole-node exclusive because no GPU count was given, which makes a GB200 NVL72 node much harder to place and lengthens the queue wait.

Secondary issue visible in the log: because the allocation never succeeded, jobIdFile /mnt/pvc/nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep/job_id_ep_2178.txt was never written, and the cleanup stage reported WARNING: No job ID files found in /mnt/pvc/nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep/ — so the cleanup path has no handle on allocation 3081948 if it is ever left queued.

Implicated commit: No product commit. ee3ee612 (NirWolfer, 2026-11-02, "ci: wait up to 4h for Slurm allocations (#2573)") is what sets immediateTimeout:14400 and therefore shapes this failure into a 4-hour red build rather than a fast one; it is not the cause of the capacity shortage. The PR commit f3ba5367 is not implicated.

File: CI pipeline definition under .ci/jenkins/ that invokes slurm.allocation with partition:gb200nvl72_cx8, immediateTimeout:14400, extraArgs:[--account=blackwell] (values echoed verbatim in the stage-164 log).

Suggested fix:

  1. Treat an allocation timeout as infra, not test failure: wrap the slurm.allocation call in a retry, or catch the non-zero exit and mark the build UNSTABLE/NOT_BUILT with a clear "no GB200 capacity" message instead of failing the PR check.
  2. Add an explicit GPU request (e.g. --gpus-per-node=<n> or --exclusive only when actually needed) to extraArgs so the submit-plugin Lua rule stops promoting the job to whole-node exclusive — a right-sized request will schedule far sooner on gb200nvl72_cx8.
  3. Re-order the pipeline so the ~15 min image build isn't thrown away: allocate (or at least probe sinfo for idle gb200nvl72_cx8 nodes) before Compiling NIXL EP Docker Image for DL, and skip early when the partition has no idle nodes.
  4. Have the allocation wrapper write the pending job ID to jobIdFile as soon as salloc reports Pending job allocation <id>, so slurm.stopAllForBuild can scancel it on timeout instead of logging "No job ID files found".
  5. Simply re-trigger build [GPUNetIO] Clean up lifecycle ownership #2178 once the partition drains — the commit itself builds clean.

Related: PR #2164 (the triggering PR, not at fault); PR #2573 / commit ee3ee612 which introduced the 4 h allocation wait.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 7ca3f26e

TL;DR: The build never ran tests — salloc on dlcluster rejected the Slurm partition name gb200nvl72_cx8 ("invalid partition specified"), so the "Allocate DL EP Environment" stage failed after a fully successful image build. Fix the partition name (or account/partition entitlement) in the dl-ep pipeline's slurm.allocation config to a partition that exists on dlcluster.nvidia.com.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage Allocate DL EP Environment (node 164) of nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep #2213 failed in 8s because the Slurm allocation request was rejected.

Root cause: The pipeline calls the shared library helper with
slurm.allocation(partition: gb200nvl72_cx8, headNode: dlcluster.nvidia.com, headUser: svc-nixl, nodes: 1, jobTimeout: 02:30:00, immediateTimeout: 14400, extraArgs: [--account=blackwell]), which runs:
salloc -N 1 -p gb200nvl72_cx8 --job-name=nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-2213 --immediate=14400 --time=02:30:00 --no-shell --account=blackwell

The controller replied:

salloc: error: lua: Partition 'gb200nvl72_cx8' was not found, check that the name was spelled correctly
salloc: error: invalid partition specified: gb200nvl72_cx8
salloc: error: Job submit/allocate failed: Invalid partition name specified

This is a CI configuration/cluster-inventory mismatch, not a code defect: the partition either was renamed/retired on dlcluster or the blackwell account no longer has access to it. Everything before it succeeded — the EP Docker image built and pushed cleanly (stage 149, ~17.5 min, ...nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-test:2213 pushed at 07:38:01), and the failure came 11s after the stage started, so there is no hang and no relation to the PR's code changes (gtest-ucx-sgl-variant, [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String]). Note also the follow-up cleanup logged WARNING: No job ID files found in /mnt/pvc/nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep/, consistent with no allocation ever having been created.

Implicated commit: unknown — no repo commit changed the partition string; the most recent related CI change to the allocation call is ee3ee612 (NirWolfer, "ci: wait up to 4h for Slurm allocations (#2573)"), which set --immediate=14400 but not the partition name.

File: the slurm.allocation invocation for the DL EP pipeline (partition argument gb200nvl72_cx8) under .ci/jenkins/pipeline/ — exact file not resolvable from the available tree listing; grep the repo for gb200nvl72_cx8.

Suggested fix:

  1. On dlcluster.nvidia.com as svc-nixl, run sinfo -o '%P %a %l %D %T' (and sacctmgr show assoc account=blackwell format=partition) to get the current GB200/CX8 partition name and the partitions the blackwell account may submit to.
  2. Update the partition: value in the dl-ep pipeline's slurm.allocation args to that name (and keep --account=blackwell only if the association exists). Prefer sourcing the partition from a single job parameter/variable so all DL jobs can be retargeted in one place.
  3. Make the allocation step fail with a clearer message: the helper should detect Invalid partition name specified and surface "partition X not available for account Y" rather than a bare exit 1, so this doesn't look like a test failure on PR builds.
  4. Re-trigger TEST/GTEST: Add SGL variants of the UCX transfer gtests #2164 once corrected; no change to the PR's code is required.

Related: PR #2164 (the build's trigger, unaffected); CI allocation-path change PR #2573 (ee3ee612). No existing issue found referencing gb200nvl72_cx8.
