Overview

Crate staging can build a Git-patched external dependency successfully, then fail during cargo publish because Cargo discards the patch and looks for the dependency on crates.io. Add explicit, source-controlled publication references so staged crates can depend on an already-published Artifactory RC while ordinary builds retain their Git pins.

Summary / Key Changes

  • Read exact package version, registry alias, and expected Git revision from workspace.metadata.artifactory.dependencies. Apply the substitution only in the disposable staging checkout, preserve dependency aliases/features/workspace inheritance, and remove only the matching Git patch.
  • Configure dependency indexes through the ARTIFACTORY_CARGO_DEPENDENCY_REGISTRIES GitHub variable. Reuse ARTIFACTORY_TOKEN only for indexes on the publication Artifactory server. Registry tokens remain in the child-process environment. ARTIFACTORY_CARGO_INDEX now prefers a variable with the existing secret as a compatibility fallback.
  • Reject stale source pins, conflicting sources, missing registry configuration, unsupported TOML layouts, and unintended semantic changes before writing manifests. With no publication metadata, staging behavior is unchanged.

Approximately 200 added lines of staging logic, excluding tests, documentation, and whitespace. No runtime or normal dependency changes on main. The release PR supplies the AISim-specific reference.

Registry configuration

In ai-dynamo/dynamo, go to Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions → Variables and create the repository variable ARTIFACTORY_CARGO_DEPENDENCY_REGISTRIES with this exact JSON object:

{"aisim":"sparse+https://artifactory.nvidia.com/artifactory/api/cargo/sw-dynamo-aisimulate-cargo-local/index/"}

aisim matches the registry alias in workspace.metadata.artifactory.dependencies.aisim-core. Only release PR #18232 selects a release-candidate version. Main keeps its existing dependencies. The variable supplies only the sparse index URL, including its sparse+ prefix and trailing /index/; it does not select or override a dependency version.

Keep credentials in the existing ARTIFACTORY_TOKEN secret, with read access to the AISim Cargo repository and publication access to the Dynamo Cargo repository. ARTIFACTORY_CARGO_INDEX continues to select the Dynamo publication destination. Ensure the automated-release environment does not override the repository variable with a different value.

The repository variable is configured and verified, with no automated-release environment override. Main PR #18231 must merge before release PR #18232 can use this staging support.

Validation

  • 11 focused tests pass, including a real Cargo package/verification round trip through an authenticated local sparse registry. The resulting normalized crate retains the dependency alias, actual package name, exact RC version, and explicit registry index, without Git/path references.
  • Regression coverage includes mixed declaration layouts, target dependencies, misleading metadata text, source-selector rejection, patch package identity, cross-origin token rejection, and preservation of existing Cargo configuration.
  • Scoped pre-commit checks passed. No release workflow was dispatched and these changes do not publish packages.

Issues and Ongoing Work

Refs OPS-9108.

The original AISim source pin is in #18014. This change supplies reusable staging support; the release counterpart #18232 must land after this main PR because the release workflow intentionally takes its staging helper from the trusted workflow commit. No duplicate open PR for this registry support was found.

  • I used Dynamo's /pr-checklist skill.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Crate releases now support reviewed dependencies hosted in external Cargo registries, including dependencies previously referenced through Git patches.
    • Registry settings are validated before publication, and invalid configurations stop the release process.
    • Registry configuration can be supplied through repository variables or secrets.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that dependency-registry configuration is non-secret.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The staging script now validates reviewed external Cargo registry references, rewrites matching dependencies in staged manifests, and adds dependency registry indexes to Cargo configuration. The release workflow passes registry settings to the build container. New tests cover validation, rewriting, and packaging.

Changes

External Cargo Registry Publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and normalize registry references
.github/scripts/stage_crates.py, .github/scripts/test_stage_crates.py
The staging script validates reference metadata and matching Git patches, then rewrites supported dependency declarations in staged manifests. Unit tests cover valid and rejected configurations, including cases that must not modify manifests.
Configure Cargo and release wiring
.github/scripts/stage_crates.py, .github/scripts/test_stage_crates.py, .github/workflows/release.yml, .pre-commit-config.yaml
The staging entry point configures dependency registry tokens and indexes before writing Cargo configuration. The release workflow passes registry settings to the build container. Integration tests check the packaged dependency and authenticated registry request. A pre-commit hook runs the staging tests for related changes.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to f2176

The change adds staging support for external Cargo registry dependencies and keeps ordinary builds on their Git pins. No merge-blocking risk remains; one inaccurate code comment about the registry host should be corrected.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 13.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 15 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Update the crate_exists comment. The registry host is no longer always secret-derived.

ARTIFACTORY_CARGO_INDEX now prefers a repository variable (.github/workflows/release.yml:1695). The staging docstring describes the index as configuration (.github/scripts/stage_crates.py:13). The crate_exists comment still calls the host workflow-secret-derived (.github/scripts/stage_crates.py:498).

Keep the ::add-mask:: step. It masks CARGO_HOST from the index value whatever its source, so the host stays masked. Only the comment needs correction.
