fix(operator): let a PoolRelay watch both worker revisions during a rolling update - #17971
During a rolling update of a DGD's workers, a DynamoPoolRelay watched only the old revision's workers, and after they drained it watched none until cutover. A Global Router using the affinity policy then counted the pool as full and moved its requests and session pins elsewhere, although every new worker was serving. With this PR the Relay watches both revisions' workers for the whole rolling update.
Key Changes
About 50 lines of core logic, plus one optional status field.
api/v1beta1/common.go: ComponentReplicaStatus.runtimeNamespaces lists every runtime namespace in which a component may have replicas, while runtimeNamespace alone does not name them all. It is also in v1alpha1 and converts natively. runtimeNamespace, which the Planner reads, is unchanged.
dgd_worker_rollout_reconciler.go and internal/dynamo/grove.go fill it in. The DCD path lists the new revision's namespace and every old generation's. Grove lists the active namespace, the accepted PodCliqueSet revision's, and every namespace it listed before, until the accepted revision's workers complete.
poolrelay/controller.go: the Relay's source file is the union of runtimeNamespace and runtimeNamespaces, and falls back to the DGD's base namespace only when the status names none. The Relay reloads the file, and its pods do not restart.
The disaggregated-set path has no managed rolling update and writes no runtime namespace, and a Relay does not watch LPX components, so neither changes.
Validation
Cause: during a rolling update the status keeps runtimeNamespace on the old revision until cutover, by design, while the new workers already run in <base>-<newWorkerHash>. The pool's frontends find both revisions through DYN_NAMESPACE_PREFIX, but the Relay watches exactly the namespaces in its source file, which came from runtimeNamespace alone.

Tests that fail without the fix:
TestOneDGDRelayLifecycle: the source file lists both revisions during a rolling update and only the new one after cutover, without rolling the Relay's pods.
TestMergeWorkerComponentStatuses and TestAggregateOldWorkerServiceStatuses_MultipleOldGenerations: the DCD path lists the new namespace and every old generation's.
TestEvaluateGroveReadinessPublishesWorkerRuntimeNamespaceAfterCutover and TestGroveWorkloadsReconciler_Reconcile: Grove's lists in each cutover state, a superseded revision kept through an interrupted rollout, and the list kept while Grove has not accepted a PodCliqueSet write.
TestSourceNamespaces: the Relay adds the base namespace only when the status names none.
TestDGD_RoundTrip_Status: the field survives v1alpha1 conversion.
All operator tests pass, unit and envtest. Not run on a cluster.
An adversarial review found two Grove cases that dropped a live revision's namespace (an interrupted rollout, and a PodCliqueSet write during a rollout), a source that no worker used, and the curated DGD reference left out. 5d711c4 fixes all four.
Worker deployment status now reports all runtime namespaces that may contain replicas during a rolling update, including namespaces for both old and new revisions.
Pool Relay source discovery now includes replicas across both namespaces during the transition and updates to the new namespace after cutover, without restarting the Relay deployment.
Documentation
Updated Kubernetes API references and deployment guidance to describe the namespace status and Pool Relay behavior.
…olling update
A DynamoPoolRelay watches the runtime namespaces that the DGD status
gives its workers. During a rolling update, a worker component's
runtimeNamespace keeps the old revision's namespace until cutover, while
the new workers already run in their own. So the Relay reported only
the shrinking old revision, and once the old workers had drained it
watched an empty namespace until the status flipped and the kubelet
refreshed its mounted source file. A Global Router using the affinity
policy counted the pool as full meanwhile and moved requests and session
pins to other pools, although every new worker was serving.
The component status gains runtimeNamespaces: every runtime namespace in
which the component may have replicas, while runtimeNamespace alone does
not name them all. During a rolling update, the DCD path lists the new
revision's namespace and every old generation's. Grove lists the active
namespace and the accepted PodCliqueSet revision's until its workers
complete; on a first deployment, whose runtimeNamespace stays empty until
then, it lists the accepted revision's alone. The Relay's source file is
the union of both fields, so the Relay watches the old and new workers
from the start of a rolling update until cutover. runtimeNamespace, which
the Planner reads, is unchanged.
The field is in v1alpha1 and v1beta1 and converts natively. The
disaggregated-set path, which has no managed rolling update and writes
no runtime namespace, and LPX components, which a Relay does not watch,
are unchanged.

Grove status reports active and accepted revision namespaces during incomplete worker cutover. The helper removes empty and duplicate values and sorts the result. Tests cover cutover states and status expectations.
Aggregate namespaces across worker generations deploy/operator/internal/controller/dgd_worker_rollout_reconciler.go, deploy/operator/internal/controller/dgd_worker_rollout_reconciler_test.go
Old worker status aggregation collects namespaces from old DCDs. Merged status combines namespaces from old and new generations while retaining the old active worker projection.
Use reported namespaces for Relay sources deploy/operator/internal/controller/poolrelay/controller.go, deploy/operator/internal/controller/poolrelay/controller_test.go, docs/fern/pages/kubernetes/kv-aware-routing/pool-relay.md
Relay source discovery adds reported worker namespaces to its existing selection. Tests and documentation describe source-file updates during rolling updates.
A rapid successive worker update can cause PoolRelay to stop watching workers that are still running, potentially disrupting routing. Preserve their namespaces until those workers terminate before merging; also correct the namespace field descriptions.

Explanation
The title names the operator fix and its effect: a PoolRelay watches both worker revisions during a rolling update. The changeset matches this. It adds runtimeNamespaces to replica status in v1alpha1 and v1beta1, fills it in the DCD and Grove paths, and changes the PoolRelay source file to the union of both fields. The title is specific and follows the conventional-commit form. It does not name the status field or Grove, but it still summarizes the main change.

Explanation
The description covers the overview (rolling-update Relay watch gap and the affinity-routing impact), key changes across the API, controller, Grove, and Relay files, a validation section with a before/after table, named tests, and the cluster-testing gap. It also lists the linked issue DEP-1331 and includes the checklist item. The template's Overview, Key Changes, Validation, and Issues sections are all present and substantive. The only gaps are minor: the 'Closes DEP-1331' line is not a GitHub-style issue reference (#XXXX), and the PR does not say whether the adversarial-review fix commit is covered by the validation list beyond a single sentence. Neither gap is critical.

Document the initial deployment case.
During an initial Grove deployment, runtimeNamespace can be empty while runtimeNamespaces contains the accepted revision’s namespace. A consumer that follows this description and reads the list only during rolling updates can miss those workers. Document that consumers should use the union of both fields, and update the matching v1alpha1 description. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Complete the runtimeNamespaces description.
Both descriptions end with the incomplete phrase the new revision's.. State the noun explicitly, for example: also lists the new revision's namespace. Apply the correction to both schema copies and regenerate this CRD if it is generated.

Keep earlier revision namespaces while their workers still run.
runtimeNamespaces builds the list only from the active namespace and the newly accepted revision's namespace. It does not read the component's previous RuntimeNamespaces. If a newer PodCliqueSet revision is accepted before workers of an earlier accepted revision terminate, that earlier namespace drops out of the list. PoolRelay then stops watching live workers. This repeats the routing failure that this change is meant to prevent.
The current plan reads completion state only for the accepted revision. A correct change must keep each earlier namespace while its workers exist and remove it after they terminate. The current code cannot determine that, so this comment does not propose a patch.

Update the runtimeNamespaces logic to retain namespaces from previous
PodCliqueSet revisions while workers in those namespaces are still running, and
remove them after those workers terminate. The current accepted-revision
completion state is insufficient; establish how to determine worker completion
for each earlier revision before changing the namespace list, while preserving
the active and newly accepted namespaces.

…louts
An adversarial review found two Grove cases that dropped a live
revision's namespace from runtimeNamespaces. An update made before the
previous one completed listed only the active and the newest revision,
so the Relay lost the workers of the revision in between. A
PodCliqueSet write during a rollout, which Grove has not accepted yet,
emptied the list for one status write. Grove now carries the listed
namespaces forward until cutover.
The Relay falls back to the DGD's base namespace only when the status
names no namespace at all, so a Grove first deployment no longer adds a
source that no worker uses. The curated DGD reference documents
runtimeNamespaces, the v1alpha1 comment no longer says Grove workers use
the base namespace, and the PoolRelay page mentions the kubelet's delay
in refreshing the source file. The helper that builds the list is now
StatusRuntimeNamespaces.

Non-blocking: historical namespaces remain until a successful cutover
Trigger and behavior
Retaining the previous list is necessary when a new PCS revision supersedes an unfinished rollout: workers from that earlier revision may still be alive. However, the list is carried forward without checking whether each historical namespace still contains workers. For example, with active revision A, an interrupted rollout to B, followed by another unfinished rollout to C, the list remains [A, B, C] even after the last B worker has disappeared. Further interrupted revisions can extend it until workersCompleted clears the list.
Impact
This is a conservative over-approximation, not a demonstrated routing bug: an empty discovery scope does not itself create workers or capacity. The consequence is retained status/configuration entries and potentially unnecessary discovery bookkeeping. I would not block this fix on it, and there is no measured resource problem here.
Possible follow-up
If cleanup becomes useful, prune historical namespaces only from authoritative evidence that their workers have terminated. Do not drop an intermediate namespace merely because it is no longer the active or accepted revision; that would reintroduce the interrupted-rollout failure this code prevents. Keep any knowledge of Grove revision lifecycles in the DGD/Grove reconciliation layer rather than teaching the PoolRelay controller about Grove.
A pruning change should cover both cases: retain B while its workers still exist, and remove B after they are gone while C is still rolling out. The existing successful-cutover cleanup should remain covered.

[P2] Preserve an accepted revision that has not reached DGD status yet
Trigger and failure path
Cloning the previous list preserves B only if an earlier DGD reconcile already published B. There is another ordering that needs no failed status write or repeated conflicts:
A is active. A successful reconcile writes PCS revision B, but B is not yet acknowledged by Grove, so the returned DGD status still names only A.
Grove accepts B and B workers start serving.
The next DGD edit requests C before a DGD reconcile has projected B into status.
groveWorkloadsReconciler.Reconcile reads the accepted B snapshot, then calls reconcilePodCliqueSetbefore evaluating readiness. Writing C advances the PCS generation while its status still acknowledges B.
getAcceptedPCSRevisionHash consequently returns nil for the synchronized PCS. This branch cannot add B, and the cloned DGD list does not contain it either. Once C is accepted, the list becomes A/C rather than A/B/C.
Impact
Still-serving B workers are absent from the Relay's sources. If A has drained and C is not serving yet, the Relay can again miss the usable workers, reproducing the discovery/capacity problem described in DEP-1331. This is separate from the non-blocking historical-namespace cleanup observation.
Focused fix
PR #18063, stacked on this PR, resolves the accepted worker namespaces from the renderer's immutable pre-update PCS observation and merges them into the returned component status when the PCS is written. The pending-C result then includes:
The subsequent acceptance of C adds C; existing cutover logic removes the historical list after C completes. The patch reuses the existing PCS read and keeps Grove-specific handling in DGD reconciliation. It adds 41 lines of production code and 89 lines of regression coverage.
Regression evidence
TestGroveWorkloadsReconciler_PreservesUnpublishedAcceptedNamespace starts with A in DGD status and accepted B in the PCS, then requests C. It fails on this PR without the fix (expected A/B; actual historical list is empty) and passes with commit 1512f7f873. It also checks later acceptance of C, unchanged input DGD status, and cleanup after cutover. Targeted Grove controller/namespace tests and pre-commit checks pass. Validation used fake Kubernetes clients.
