Overview

Main's selection benches time single decisions from one caller, so they can't show the scheduler queue actor or the indexer under a large deployment's load. This PR adds selection_replay_bench, which replays a trace-derived workload through the production SelectionCore the way the frontend calls it. KV events come from the router's own placements. It becomes the standard bench for changes to SelectionCore, the scheduler queue actor and the default policy.

agentx workload Fixed, 4.6k req/s Saturation
Booked req/s 4,600 (kept up) 12.2k
Admission p50 / p99 0.60 / 1.51 ms 42 / 46 ms (512 in flight)
Booked in flight (median) 6,144 5,646
Prompt blocks cached on the booked worker 78% 55%
Index backlog, max 363 events 4.0M events: the index can't keep up
Bench threads holding back the run – 3.8%
Index event errors 0 0

One Grace socket: 58 router CPUs and 14 bench CPUs (8 engine issuers, 4 prep threads), default router config.

Key Changes

  • lib/bench/kv_router/selection_replay_bench.rs and selection_replay/:
    • corpus: trace plays become closed-loop lanes, and the mocker gives each request's timing.
    • engine: the frontend's call sequence, engine issuer threads that act as workers, fixed and saturation modes, and checks for bench-bound runs and router overload. Router rejections and admissions waiting in the router queue are reported, not counted as failures to keep up.
    • kv_cache: a per-worker block-pool model that emits Stored and Removed events.
    • host: builds the service as embedded.rs does.
  • kv_router/common: the CPU-partition check moves out of mooncake_open_loop.rs into issuer.rs so both benches share it, and the bench uses the shared deadline clock from refactor(bench): share the KV-router replay deadline clock #17887. PercentileStats becomes serializable.
  • tests/selection_replay.rs: an end-to-end replay in both modes and with a queueing router, plus cache-model tests.
  • pre-merge.yml: compiles, lints and tests the bench.
  • SELECTION_BENCH.md: the protocol and the A/B method.

Validation

  • cargo clippy --no-default-features -p dynamo-bench --features selection-replay --bench selection_replay_bench --test selection_replay -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --no-default-features -p dynamo-bench --features selection-replay --test selection_replay (7 pass)

Walkthrough

Adds a Criterion benchmark that measures concurrent selection, reservation, and freeing through SelectionCore across worker counts and queue configurations. The benchmark includes workload setup, cache seeding, environment controls, and reproduction guidance.

Workload and worker setup
lib/router-plugins/builtin/benches/default_concurrent.rs
Builds requests with shared and unique token prefixes, seeds worker cache data, and configures SelectionCore and workers.
Concurrent cycles and scenarios
lib/router-plugins/builtin/benches/default_concurrent.rs
Runs concurrent select-reserve-free cycles. Defines Criterion scenarios for 256, 1024, and 2048 workers with different queue and credit settings.

Explanation

The title identifies a benchmark for SelectionCore, which is related to the changes, but it incorrectly calls the benchmark a selection replay benchmark. The actual change adds a concurrent benchmark for SelectionCore, the default policy, and the scheduler queue actor.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 75.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 1 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description does not match the files or change scope in this PR. It documents selection replay work, but the PR changes the default concurrent benchmark, Cargo configuration, Cargo.lock, and skill documentation. The Validation section also uses commands for a different feature. The Issues and Ongoing Work section does not include the required issue reference. The checklist is marked as complete.

Resolution

Rewrite the description to document lib/router-plugins/builtin/benches/default_concurrent.rs and its Criterion benchmark. Describe the Cargo.toml changes for the dynamo-runtime dev-dependency and the harness = false bench target. Describe the Cargo.lock update and the change to .agents/skills/dynamo-perf-best-practices/SKILL.md. Remove selection replay content if it belongs to another PR. Replace the Validation section with commands that validate dynamo-router-plugins-builtin, such as the applicable cargo bench and cargo clippy commands. Add the issue reference under Issues and Ongoing Work, or state why no issue applies. Keep the checklist item only if the /pr-checklist skill was run for this change.

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Make the parked-queue scenario fill the worker pool.

With the default 64 callers and at least 256 eligible workers, each caller can hold only one reservation. The 0.1 threshold makes an occupied rank full, but the production queue parks a request only when all eligible workers are full. Thus, the default queue0.1_credit0 run does not measure the claimed parked-queue workload. Limit eligible workers below the caller count and hold reservations long enough to sustain waiting, or increase callers above the worker count. Verify that the scenario records queued requests before using its throughput for queue-actor comparisons. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the queue0.1_credit0 benchmark scenario so eligible workers are fewer
than callers, or callers exceed eligible workers, and reservations last long
enough to sustain waiting. Verify the run records queued requests before using
its throughput for queue-actor comparisons.

selection_replay_bench drives the KV router's selection core in-process the
way the frontend does (run_selection with a lease, commit, prefill-complete
marks, acknowledged release) under a trace-driven workload. The mocker gives
each request's timing; KV events come from the router's own bookings through a
per-worker block-pool model and reach the index through try_apply_event.

Fixed and saturation modes report when the bench, rather than the router,
limited a run, and surface router overload (a lagging index) instead of
hiding it. The agentx workload is the default. See SELECTION_BENCH.md.

The open-loop clock and CPU-partition check move from mooncake_open_loop.rs to
kv_router/common so both benches share them.

…g routers

- Rejections are reported, not counted as failures to keep up.
- Admissions waiting in the router are reported over the window.
- Saturation runs trace time on while every admission waits on an engine
action, and runs past the window until every request has its answer.
- Lanes chain plays for shared-hash (Mooncake) traces too.
- Bench threads are named for profiling.
