test(deploy): keep failed-attempt deploy evidence across retries - #17617
The Frontend pod stays in PodInitializing, and the test ends with Timeout (>1200.0s) from pytest-timeout and only a thread dump. The readiness wait defaults to 1800 s, longer than the test timeout.
The first two causes cannot be checked. The test harness deletes a test's output folder at every setup, so the Datadog retry deletes the failed attempt's pod logs, events, and discovery snapshot before upload. The snapshot also fails on an EndpointSlice with endpoints: null.

Needs any live Kubernetes deployment with the Dynamo operator. The coding run had no Kubernetes cluster.
Exact error in a test

The did not become available error and the 1200 s timeout only appear against a live deployment. No unit test reaches them, and the coding run had no cluster.
Found the cause in code and triggered the exact error directly
❌ Exact error
Does not run the fix
This covers only the third mode, the kr8s v1.36.4 is not supported error. It fails as in CI without the warning filter that main already has from #17285, and only warns with it. The run called the real kr8s version check, not the code this change edits.
No run showed this change removing the reported failure. The change does not fix the 404 after Ready or the stuck frontend pod, whose causes are still unconfirmed. It keeps a failed attempt's evidence and bounds the readiness wait, and only a live deployment can show the reported failure.
Proposed fix
This change keeps evidence. It does not fix the flake. When pytest runs a test again in the same process, the harness moves the earlier attempt's output to <dir>.attempt<N> and does not delete it. The discovery snapshot stores the raw API response, so it records slices with no endpoints. test_deployment waits at most 900 s for readiness, so a stuck rollout fails with pod status before the pytest timeout.

Not covered: the cause of the 404 after Ready and of the stuck frontend pod. The change does not carry the Datadog DD_RAMBHH key.

Validation
This PR adds test_discovery_capture_records_endpointslice_without_endpoints, test_discovery_capture_records_api_error_body, and test_readiness_wait_deadline_covers_stalled_request in tests/deploy/test_dgd_utils.py. They run on CPU without a cluster. The discovery tests use the real kubernetes_asyncio client with only its HTTP session faked. The retry-output helper test was removed in 1397f069f following review; the retry-output results below were recorded earlier, before its removal. Current-head validation runs in remote CI.

A test's first run clears stale output from earlier sessions, including old .attempt folders.
Earlier helper test, since removed
❌ Failed: an old .attempt1 folder was left in place
✅ Passed
A retried test keeps the earlier attempt's output, as <dir>.attempt1.
Earlier helper test, since removed; a throwaway rerun probe on CPU, with and without xdist
❌ Failed: the probe kept only the retry's files, and the first attempt's marker and test.log.txt were deleted
✅ Passed; the probe kept marker1 and test.log.txt under .attempt1, also with -n 2
The discovery snapshot records an EndpointSlice with endpoints: null.
New unit test
❌ Exact error: ValueError: Invalid value for 'endpoints', must not be 'None', the same teardown warning as the CI failure
Refs DYN-5157. When Datadog Auto Test Retries re-runs a failed deploy
test in the same process, the autouse `logger` fixture deleted the
failed attempt's output directory, so its pod logs, events and
discovery snapshot were never uploaded. Move a previous attempt's
output to `<dir>.attempt<N>` instead; the first execution still clears
stale output.
Read the discovery snapshot as raw JSON so an EndpointSlice with
`endpoints: null` is recorded instead of failing client-model
validation.
Give test_deployment a 900 s readiness timeout, below its 1200 s
pytest timeout, so a stuck rollout fails with pod diagnostics rather
than a pytest-timeout thread dump.

Passed (exit 0)
Covers the readiness_timeout=900 line, the endpoints: null handling in the deploy test's snapshot check, and that the uploaded test-output/ includes .attempt<N> folders. Tested revision: b2e4a1bd7e.
Main gap: the deploy test itself did not run, because it needs a Kubernetes cluster with the Dynamo operator. Only sglang Deploy Test / agg_embed in CI can show the 900 s readiness bound and Datadog retries keeping .attempt<N> folders.
Detailed evidence — validation complete
Left out of the table because CI repeats them: building the changed source and importing its compiled extension (Check 1), lint and formatting (Check 2), and the pre_merge unit tests in tests/utils/test_output_paths.py and tests/deploy/test_dgd_utils.py (Check 3).
Evidence tally: [4/4 validated]
Advisory AI assessment: sound. One nit: an HTTP error from a discovery read is now recorded without the API server's response body.
Validation result: complete — pass — build, lint, 27 unit tests and the rerun probe passed with the change, and both new tests and the probe failed on the old code at the intended behavior; the change keeps failed-attempt evidence and bounds the readiness wait but does not fix the flake (no live deploy run was possible; that needs a Kubernetes cluster)
Evidence audit: complete [4/4 validated] — the command report comes from recorded runs.

The deployment test utilities now capture discovery responses as raw JSON and handle EndpointSlices with null endpoints. Test output preparation now preserves prior execution output in numbered attempt directories.

Discovery State Capture
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Capture discovery state as raw JSON tests/deploy/dgd_utils.py, tests/deploy/test_dgd_utils.py
Discovery capture checks response status, parses raw JSON, and releases responses. The test covers an EndpointSlice with null endpoints and verifies that all five responses are released.
Update deployment test handling tests/deploy/test_dgd.py
The deployment test sets a 900-second readiness timeout. Its EndpointSlice check treats null endpoints as empty.
Repeated Test Output
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Prepare output directories across executions tests/utils/output_paths.py, tests/conftest.py, tests/utils/test_output_paths.py
The helper clears output on the first execution and archives prior output on later executions. The logger fixture uses the helper, and the test checks output across three calls.
Failed-attempt logs can be lost when same-named tests share an output directory. Align the directory and counter identities before merging; the remaining output and diagnostic issues are narrower.

The title "test(deploy): keep failed-attempt deploy evidence across retries" matches the main change. The PR keeps a failed attempt's output as <dir>.attempt<N> when pytest reruns a test in the same process, and it also covers the discovery snapshot and the 900-second readiness bound. The title is conventional and specific, and the changeset does not contain unrelated work.

Bound each readiness status request by the remaining deadline.
_wait_for_condition checks its deadline only at the top of each loop iteration. The status request inside the loop has no timeout. A stalled request can therefore run past the 900-second readiness deadline. The test then reaches its 1200-second pytest timeout before the readiness failure, and the pod diagnostics that the test comment describes do not run. Pass the remaining budget to each status request, or wrap it in a deadline-bounded call, so a stalled request ends the wait within the readiness deadline.
This stall risk existed before this change. The default timeout of 1800 seconds already exceeded the 1200-second pytest timeout. The 900-second setting shortens the window, but it does not limit a single request.

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: Verified still present but pre-existing: _wait_for_condition checks the 900-second deadline only between iterations, while its Kubernetes status request has no request timeout. A stalled request can therefore pass both the readiness deadline and the surrounding 1200-second pytest timeout without producing the intended readiness diagnostics.
Original discussion: Verified still present: discovery capture calls raise_for_status() before reading the response body, so a 4xx or 5xx snapshot records only ClientResponseError metadata and discards the API server's diagnostic body.
Original discussion: Verified still present: the logger derives log_dir from request.node.name but keys attempts by request.node.nodeid. Same-named tests in different files therefore share a directory while having independent counters, allowing one test's first-run cleanup to delete another test's preserved attempt output.

factory: About the outside-diff finding in the CodeRabbit review, which the Dynamo review bot also confirmed: fixed in e19f650. In _wait_for_condition, the DGD status request now passes _request_timeout set to the time left before the readiness deadline, with a 1 second minimum. A stalled request now ends at the deadline, and the wait then raises its timeout error with pod status, before the 1200 s pytest timeout.

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: The readiness deadline remains unenforced. The status request is now bounded, but every not-ready iteration subsequently awaits _dump_in_flight_restart_logs(), whose pod-list and previous-log Kubernetes calls have no request timeout; with fail-fast enabled, _get_pod_status_details() is also unbounded. If any of those requests stalls, the new 900-second readiness timeout can still be exceeded until pytest's 1200-second timeout, preventing the promised timeout diagnostics. Apply the remaining deadline to every Kubernetes request awaited inside _wait_for_condition (including final diagnostics), or wrap the whole wait in a deadline.
…adiness wait
Decide whether test output is stale by comparing its modification time with
the session start, and archive current-session output under the first free
.attempt<N> name, so xdist workers sharing an output directory keep each
other's archives. Run the readiness poll under one deadline so every
Kubernetes request in it is bounded, and limit the final pod diagnostics.

factory: About the readiness deadline point in the Dynamo review bot review: fixed in 68967af. _wait_for_condition now runs the whole polling loop under one asyncio.timeout(timeout), so the restart-log, pod-status and status requests inside it all stop at the deadline. The final pod-status read before the timeout error has its own 30 s limit. The new unit test test_readiness_wait_deadline_covers_stalled_request stalls the status request for 60 s and checks that a 1 s wait raises the readiness timeout error; it fails on the previous code.

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: The xdist race remains: selecting the first free .attempt<N> and renaming uses an uncoordinated check-then-act sequence. Concurrent workers handling same-named tests can both select the same suffix; once one moves the nonempty directory, the other's os.rename can fail with ENOTEMPTY/FileExistsError or move a newly recreated live directory. Use worker-specific paths or an atomic cross-process allocation/locking mechanism.
Claim each .attempt<N> slot with mkdir before renaming into it, so xdist
workers archiving the same output directory at once cannot pick the same
slot. Drop a unit test that repeated the last phase of the retry test.
Signed-off-by: svc-glamr@nvidia.com <svc-glamr@nvidia.com>
Fixed: two workers picking the same .attempt<N>. Each worker now claims a slot with os.mkdir, which fails if the folder exists, and then renames the live folder into its own empty slot. If another worker already moved the live folder, it removes its empty slot and goes on. I ran 8 processes that each archived the same folder 50 times. The previous code raised FileNotFoundError. The new code raised nothing and kept all 400 files.
Not changed: two same-named tests running at the same moment on different workers. They share one live folder, because the folder name comes from request.node.name. Before this PR, the second test deleted the first test's live folder; now it moves the folder to an archive. Giving each worker its own folder would change the artifact paths that CI uploads, so I left that for a separate change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
nursery: I changed nothing. In tests/deploy/test_dgd_utils.py, _FakeHttpSession and _FakeHttpResponse let the two discovery tests use the real kubernetes_asyncio client without a Kubernetes cluster.
I checked _capture_discovery and ManagedDeployment._capture_discovery_state. Only the HTTP session is replaced. The client still handles the response, so the EndpointSlice test can catch the old failure when its model rejects endpoints: null. Returning a dictionary from a mocked API method would skip that step and miss the failure.
The second test checks that a 403 response saves the API server's error message. Both tests also check that all five responses are released. These classes supply the response methods and status fields those paths need.
