fix(anthropic): preserve tool failures and thinking display - #17381
Preserve failed client tool results in model-visible history and honor omitted thinking in unary and streaming responses. Heartbeats keep the SSE connection alive while output is buffered or suppressed, and reasoning that resumes after text or tools opens a correctly ordered new block.
Key Changes
Approximately 197 added production-code lines, excluding tests, comments, and whitespace.
types.rs preserves tool failure status with a text marker and suppresses backend-classified reasoning when display is omitted.
stream_converter.rs handles resumed blocks, one empty delta per omitted block, tool/text ordering, and current usage snapshots.
anthropic.rs enables the default heartbeat for every Messages stream, including reasoning buffered after tool calls; all workspaces use the same published protocol release.
Empty text and one empty delta per block, preserving tools and usage
Reasoning resumes after text/tools
Incorrect block lifetime/order
New indices and properly nested events; late tool arguments preserve ordering
Reasoning is hidden or buffered after tools
Default/summarized post-tool reasoning can leave the connection idle
Concurrent real-HTTP cases observe the default 15-second heartbeat, preserve block order, and fail against the old handler
Beta display=updates
Could be misrepresented as ordinary reasoning
Explicit unsupported-feature error
After merging main 3b191715, 30 real-HTTP admission/replay/tool-thinking tests and 420 relevant unit/schema/parser tests pass, with 10 pre-existing ignored tests unchanged. Both independent bindings workspaces pass cargo test --locked --all-targets: 86 Python tests and 43 KVBM tests. The merge preserves main's deterministic tool-call IDs and the existing thinking/text ordering. These tests use scripted CPU backends; they do not qualify live inference or Anthropic hosted behavior.
buffered_messages_enable_default_http_heartbeats covers default, summarized, and omitted display concurrently and observes the default 15-second heartbeat. It fails when the handler's automatic heartbeat is removed. resumed_thinking_keeps_sequential_blocks_and_pending_tool_order checks resumed blocks and interleaved tool arguments; the converter tests retain main's early flushing of completed tool calls. This validates idle-gap behavior; throughput impact was not benchmarked.
Main’s dynamo-decisions crate retains its separate protocol 8.4 dependency; Messages and generation types use 9.1.
Suppression requires backend-classified reasoning, or a reasoning parser for inline worker output. This does not filter ordinary answer text, generate summaries, or implement opaque reasoning signatures.

New Features
Anthropic requests can now mark tool results as failed, adding a clear failure indicator to the content sent to the model.
Anthropic requests can omit displayed reasoning while retaining ordinary response text, tool calls, and token usage.
Documentation
Added guidance on these experimental Anthropic options, including supported values, validation errors, and known limitations.
Anthropic conversion now marks failed tool results, validates thinking display settings, and suppresses readable reasoning when display is omitted. The change also pins dynamo-protocols to a Git revision in three Cargo manifests and adds documentation and HTTP tests.
When thinking display is omitted, unary responses use empty thinking text and streaming responses emit one empty thinking delta for the first reasoning chunk. Documentation and HTTP tests cover display modes and invalid requests.
Interleaved streams can omit a required thinking event. Correct the block lifecycle or accept this bounded protocol-shape gap.

Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #17376. types.rs preserves failed tool results with the [Tool execution failed] prefix, retains IDs, content, images, and order, and rejects invalid is_error values. Request and response conversion preserve thinking display. Omitted thinking produces empty unary content and one empty stream delta per reasoning block. Visible text, tools, usage, and ordering remain intact. The HTTP tests cover success and failure results, unary and streaming display modes, interleaved output, invalid combinations, updates, and malformed status values.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes remain within #17376. The converter changes implement tool-error and omitted-thinking behavior. The HTTP tests verify those behaviors. The context helper, image handling needed by tool-result preservation, documentation, and protocol dependency pins support the implementation or its validation. No unrelated feature change is established.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template: Overview, Key Changes, Validation, Issues and Ongoing Work, and the checklist are all present. It explains the preservation of failed tool results, the omitted-thinking behavior, heartbeat changes, and the validation matrix with test counts. It links the issue (#17376) and notes the dependency on the published dynamo-protocols 9.1.0 release. The main gap is the template's Closes line, which is present, but the description does not state the protocol pin still being a draft in the Cargo.toml patch, which the raw summary flags as a readiness gate. The author's checklist box is checked.
