fix(anthropic): support URL image sources - #17380
Accept HTTP(S) image URL sources in ordinary Messages content and client tool results. Convert them to the same image_url representation as existing media requests while preserving base64 behavior.
Key Changes
Approximately 22 added production-code lines, excluding tests, comments, and whitespace.
types.rs validates URL syntax, schemes, and embedded credentials without fetching during conversion.
Root and both independent bindings workspaces use published dynamo-protocols 9.1.0, renderer 9.0.2, parsers 10.2.4, and tokenizers 4.0.0, with updated lockfiles.
Remove full-request tracing; documentation identifies the frontend/worker component that owns fetching and media policy.

Result
URL/base64 × ordinary/tool-result image
Four HTTP conversion cases preserve source, order and fetched bytes
Scripted HTTP backend exercises the production fetcher/decoder failure paths
After merging main 3b191715, all 27 Messages admission/replay/image HTTP tests and six logprob integration tests pass. Both independent bindings workspaces pass locked all-target checks. The merge retains main's request admission, media refusal, chat-template defaults, and tool-call ID tracking. HTTP tests use scripted CPU backends; they do not qualify live inference or Anthropic hosted behavior.
Main’s dynamo-decisions crate retains its separate protocol 8.4 dependency; Messages and generation types use 9.1.
The actual fetcher owns destination/redirect policy and media limits. The scripted backend does not qualify a production worker’s full media pipeline, GPU/NIXL transfer, hosted limits, or model-aware image token counting.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Anthropic image inputs now support both URLs and base64 data in messages and tool results. URL images are subject to deployment fetch policies; invalid or inaccessible images return an error.
Documentation
Clarified supported image sources, URL restrictions, and how image fetching and model-specific image limits differ from Claude hosted models.
👋 Hi maheshrbapatu! Thank you for contributing to ai-dynamo/dynamo.

Summary
Image-source conversion and contract Cargo.toml, lib/bindings/kvbm/Cargo.toml, lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml, lib/llm/src/protocols/anthropic/types.rs, lib/llm/src/protocols/unified.rs, docs/fern/pages/reference/components/frontend-configuration.mdx
The Cargo manifests patch dynamo-protocols to the specified Git revision. Anthropic image conversion accepts base64 sources and absolute HTTP(S) URLs without embedded credentials. The documentation describes supported source forms and fetching behavior.
HTTP media loading and validation lib/llm/src/http/service/anthropic.rs, lib/llm/tests/common/http_harness.rs, lib/llm/tests/anthropic_url_images_http.rs
The test harness accepts a separate chat engine. HTTP tests cover URL and base64 images in user messages and tool results, including fetch, decoding, policy, and failure cases. Request traces log the request ID, model, and streaming flag instead of the full request.
Replace the draft protocol dependency and update the three lockfiles before merging; the stated release-readiness condition remains unmet.

Explanation
The title "fix(anthropic): support URL image sources" matches the main change. The changeset adds absolute HTTP(S) image URL support to Anthropic Messages content and tool results, converting them to OpenAI image_url content. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional-commit style prefix. It does not cover the removal of full-request tracing or the Cargo patches, which is acceptable.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in [#17377]. convert_image accepts URL and base64 sources, validates absolute HTTP(S) URLs, requires a host, rejects credentials, and preserves base64 conversion. The HTTP tests cover ordinary message content and tool results in unary and streaming requests. They cover valid images, malformed sources, blocked destinations, fetch failures, invalid media, oversized media, and timeouts. The tests verify OpenAI image conversion, surrounding content, bad-request handling, and URL or token redaction. The implementation uses the existing media fetch and decode path. The documentation records deployment and backend/model limitations.

Explanation
The changed files support [#17377]. The protocol patches enable the required image-source representation. The test-harness change supports the new HTTP coverage. The enum fixture update maintains existing tests. The trace reduction supports URL redaction. The documentation describes the implemented image-source behavior and its limits. No unrelated implementation, Files API work, document or citation work, token-counting change, live inference, or hosted Anthropic integration appears in the reviewed change summary.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template and covers Overview, Key Changes, Validation, and Issues and Ongoing Work. It states the purpose (accept HTTP(S) image URL sources in Messages content and tool results, converted to image_url, base64 preserved) and lists the changed files and dependency pin updates. Validation gives a case table, test counts, and the bindings checks. It links the work to issue #17377 and notes the overlap with #17381. The PR checklist is checked. The description does not explicitly say the Closes line is advisory, but the template does not require that. The description is complete and specific, so it passes.

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: The reported readiness defect remains: the root, Python bindings, and KVBM workspaces still resolve dynamo-protocols from the draft personal-repository Git revision instead of the agreed published release, and all three lockfiles retain that source.
Original discussion: The reviewed head still patches dynamo-protocols to the personal Git repository and records that source in all three lockfiles, so the published-release readiness issue remains present.

This comment only narrates the immediately following serialization and traversal of the converted messages; the test name and assertions already establish that tool-message shapes are being inspected.

The stream dimension duplicates all four meaningful source×location cases. anthropic_messages performs the single orig_request.try_into() conversion before its unary/streaming response split, and this test asserts only the converted backend request; URL versus base64 and ordinary versus tool-result content remain distinct, but repeating them with stream=true detects no additional conversion regression. Existing anthropic_http_replay::{unary_text_baseline,streaming_text_baseline} protects the response-mode split.
🤖 AI Fix
Run the four source×location cases in one response mode and remove the stream loop.

Reduced valid image coverage to the four URL/base64 × ordinary/tool-result cases in unary mode. They still assert converted order/source and fetched bytes.

Each malformed source reaches the same image-source deserializer and try_into() validation before streaming is branched, regardless of the request's stream flag. Nesting the same AnthropicContentBlock::Image inside a tool result likewise adds no malformed-source contract, while the retained valid test already protects tool-result image conversion. Preserve the ten distinct malformed shapes, but running their full stream×tool product expands 10 checks to 40 without distinguishing another regression.
🤖 AI Fix
Execute every malformed source once as a direct unary message and remove the stream and tool loops.

Each malformed source is now exercised once in direct unary content, retaining rejection and no-dispatch assertions. Valid nested tool-image coverage remains separate.

The five failure kinds are worth retaining, but their stream×tool multiplication is not: MediaEngine scans the already-converted image_url identically for both message locations, and engine.generate() errors are mapped before the unary/streaming response split. Repeating the stalled timeout alone four times adds substantial delay while protecting no distinct outcome; the final blocked-IP stream loop has the same issue. One request per failure still protects fetch, decode, redirect, size, timeout, and policy rejection, while the valid source test protects both content locations.
🤖 AI Fix
Run each media failure once in a single message location and response mode, including only one blocked-IP request.

Removed the stream×tool multiplication. Each distinct fetch, decode, size, timeout, destination, and redirect failure path is exercised once; valid conversion tests cover both image locations.

Replaced the Git patch with published dynamo-protocols 9.1.0 and its compatible renderer, parser, and tokenizer releases. All three workspaces now have updated registry lockfiles. The Messages tests pass, and both independent bindings pass locked all-target checks after integrating main.
