Overview:

Bump vLLM components in the XPU and CPU targets to vLLM 0.32.0, matching the CUDA build. Meant to follow #16757.

Details:

  • Update the XPU and CPU vLLM runtime images to v0.32.0.
  • vllm-omni is updated to v0.32.0rc1.
  • Drop the XPU and CPU Transformers and tokenizers pins: both 0.32.0 images ship Transformers 5.19.0, which is within Omni v0.32.0rc1's supported range, as CUDA already does.
  • Recapture the XPU baseline SBOM for vllm/vllm-openai-xpu:v0.32.0 (vllm-openai-xpu@20509fab) and prune the v0.31.0 baseline.
  • vllm.nixl_ref is updated to v1.5.0 for xpu/cpu to match the NIXL version shipped in the cuda vllm-runtime image. (vLLM 0.32.0 pins this version in its requirements.txt for cuda)
  • UCX (nixl_ucx_ref) is updated to v1.23.0-rc1 for xpu/cpu. This is the fixed tag closest to the UCX bundled with the cuda NIXL 1.5.0 wheels. (the wheels use 1.23.x branch -a moving target).
  • Remove the compatibility code that earlier vLLM bumps added so the XPU and CPU images could stay on older vLLM releases while CUDA moved ahead.

Validation:

  • XPU and CPU runtime images build locally with vLLM 0.32.0, vllm-omni 0.32.0rc1, NIXL 1.5.0 and UCX 1.23.0; a NIXL UCX agent starts and the Dynamo vLLM modules import.
  • XPU heterogeneous P/D tests pass on a fork CI run that builds both the CUDA and XPU images from this change

Where should the reviewer start?

  • Start at container/context.yaml
  • Then components/src/dynamo/vllm/embedding_worker_processes.py and components/src/dynamo/frontend/vllm_protocol.py

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Updated vLLM CPU and XPU runtime images to version 0.32.0, along with related vLLM integrations.
    • The integration now requires APIs available in the current vLLM release; compatibility with older API paths has been removed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Token budget handling now consistently allows total-output overflow while still rejecting prompts that exceed the model’s input limit.

Move the XPU and CPU vLLM runtime images to v0.32.0 and the shared
vLLM-Omni ref to v0.32.0rc1, matching the CUDA bump. Both upstream images
ship Transformers 5.19.0, inside Omni 0.32.0rc1's >=5.16.1,<5.20.0 range,
so drop the per-device Transformers and tokenizers pins as CUDA did.

Recapture the XPU self-baseline SBOM for vllm/vllm-openai-xpu:v0.32.0
(sha256:20509fab, 18096 components) and prune the v0.31.0 baseline.

vLLM 0.32.0 pins nixl==1.5.0 and vllm/vllm-openai:v0.32.0 ships 1.5.0,
which the ai-dynamo[vllm] extra and docs already record. Bump
vllm.nixl_ref to match, so the NIXL that wheel_builder compiles for
KVBM agrees with the runtime wheels on CUDA, and XPU and CPU run the
same NIXL as CUDA.

Every image now runs vLLM 0.32, so remove the shims that kept 0.31
working:

- Import load_chat_template and make_tool_call_id from vllm.renderers
and the delta protocol types from vllm.entrypoints.generate directly,
  and delete dynamo.frontend.vllm_protocol.
- Publish reject_total_overflow=False unconditionally; vLLM caps
  oversized output budgets.
- Always bind the embedding pool's EngineCore listeners in the
supervisor and hand both descriptors to every child; remove the
  address-only transport.
- Read InstrumentedScheduler's KV-holding queue as kv_holding_waiting.

The NIXL 1.5.0 wheels that vllm/vllm-openai:v0.32.0 ships bundle UCX
1.23.0 (ucp_get_version). Build the wheel_builder UCX at v1.23.0-rc1 to
match. nixl_ucx_ref is shared, so this applies to every framework's
wheel_builder.

Narrow the previous cleanup to the fallbacks the vLLM 0.32 bump kept
only because the XPU and CPU images stayed on 0.31:

- Restore dynamo.frontend.vllm_protocol and its callers. Keep its
  pre-existing 0.27/0.28 protocol fallback; only the vllm.entrypoints
  chat_utils fallback goes.
- Restore InstrumentedScheduler's kv_holding_waiting/skipped_waiting
fallback and its tests, which predate the bump.
- Undo incidental restructuring in the embedding pool; keep only the
  removal of the address-only transport.
- Stub vllm.renderers.chat_utils instead of vllm.entrypoints.chat_utils
  for marker-only collection.

The legacy vllm.entrypoints.openai.engine.protocol path served images
still on vLLM 0.27 and 0.28. Every image now runs 0.32, so import the
delta protocol types from vllm.entrypoints.generate directly. Keep
vllm_protocol as the shared import point so its callers stay unchanged,
and drop the legacy path's marker-collection stubs.

Limit the embedding-pool cleanup to the one branch that existed for
vLLM 0.31: _resolve_engine_utils no longer tries
get_engine_zmq_addresses before bind_engine_zmq_listeners. Restore the
rest of the pool and its tests as they were, and stub
bind_engine_zmq_listeners in the parent-launch test.

Walkthrough

The XPU and CPU vLLM references advance to 0.32.0 alongside related NIXL and vLLM Omni updates. The code uses current vLLM module paths, updates token-budget overflow handling, and requires bound listeners for embedding workers.

Changes

vLLM 0.32.0 alignment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Align runtime references and SBOM
container/context.yaml, container/compliance/base_sboms/manifest.json
The XPU and CPU vLLM tags advance to v0.32.0. The vLLM Omni and NIXL references and the Dynamo NIXL UCX reference also advance. The XPU SBOM record is updated, and the Transformers and tokenizers pins are removed.
Use current vLLM imports and capacity rules
components/src/dynamo/frontend/vllm_protocol.py, components/src/dynamo/vllm/realtime/factories.py, components/src/dynamo/vllm/capacity.py, tests/report_pytest_markers.py
The code imports chat helpers and protocol types from current vLLM paths. The token budget continues to reject prompt overflow, while total-overflow rejection is always disabled. Dependency stubs reflect the current chat-utils path.
Require bound embedding worker listeners
components/src/dynamo/vllm/embedding_worker_processes.py, components/src/dynamo/vllm/tests/test_embedding_worker_processes.py
The worker utility requires bind_engine_zmq_listeners and lists only vLLM 0.32.0 as verified. The parent-process test checks listener cleanup.

Explanation

Issue #17322 coding requirements are met. container/context.yaml sets XPU and CPU vLLM runtime tags to v0.32.0, sets vllm-omni to v0.32.0rc1, sets the vLLM NIXL ref to v1.5.0, and sets UCX to v1.23.0-rc1. It removes the XPU and CPU Transformers and tokenizers pins and updates the XPU baseline SBOM. The compatibility paths are removed from vllm_protocol.py, capacity.py, embedding_worker_processes.py, and realtime chat-template loading. The embedding test now covers bind_engine_zmq_listeners cleanup. The reviewed head verifies the new vLLM 0.32 engine API shape.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files remain within issue #17322. The dependency and SBOM updates implement version alignment. The protocol, capacity, realtime factory, and embedding changes remove the compatibility paths named by the issue. The test and marker updates support those implementation changes. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

With every image on vLLM 0.32, dynamo.frontend.vllm_protocol only
re-exported vLLM's delta protocol types and chat helpers. Delete it and
import from vllm.entrypoints.generate.base.protocol and
vllm.renderers.chat_utils directly. The renderer API contract test now
checks vLLM's own module, so it fails early if vLLM moves these types
again.

The CUDA override existed only while CUDA ran a newer vLLM than XPU and
CPU. All three now use vllm-omni v0.32.0rc1, so rely on the shared
vllm.vllm_omni_ref. The rendered CUDA, XPU and CPU Dockerfiles are
unchanged.

[P2] The title limits this PR to the XPU and CPU builds, but container/context.yaml also changes two build arguments of every CUDA image. In the thread on line 72, I wrote that you can ignore the shared UCX change. I measured it again. It also changes CUDA build arguments, so I now suggest that you scope it. The three inline suggestions keep the new NIXL and UCX versions on the vLLM XPU and CPU devices only. The UCX part also needs this template change, because args.Dockerfile reads nixl_ucx_ref only from the shared dynamo section:

Renders on main, on this head, and with the suggestions.

I rendered 39 Dockerfiles with container/render.py: dynamo runtime, frontend and dev, vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM and Triton, and the EFA variants, on amd64 and arm64.

  • At this head, all 39 renders differ from main at 4cfde0eaed. Each one gets NIXL_UCX_REF=v1.23.0-rc1 instead of v1.22.0. The vLLM CUDA renders also get NIXL_REF=v1.5.0 instead of v1.4.1.
  • With the suggestions, the 30 renders outside vLLM XPU and CPU are byte-identical to main. The 9 vLLM XPU and CPU renders are byte-identical to this head.
  • At this head, the vLLM CUDA render keeps VLLM_OMNI_REF=v0.32.0rc1, because the CUDA device falls back to the framework value. The suggestion on line 100 keeps a CUDA pin, so a later XPU and CPU change of that value does not reach CUDA.
Packages in the vLLM CUDA runtime image.

I compared two CUDA vLLM runtime images. CI built one for 39198f127d, and the other is the image for main at 4cfde0eaed. The lines that this PR changes in container/ are the same at 39198f127d and at this head.

Package main This PR
vllm 0.32.0 0.32.0
vllm-omni 0.32.0rc1 0.32.0rc1
nixl, nixl-cu12, nixl-cu13 1.5.0 1.5.0

Both images have 339 Python packages. Only ai-dynamo, ai-dynamo-runtime and aisimulate differ, and main changed those after this branch point. In both images, /opt/dynamo/nixl links to the nixl-cu13 wheel libraries, and /usr/local/ucx does not exist. So the vLLM CUDA runtime image does not change. The two arguments change what the vLLM CUDA build stages compile. The table in the thread on line 72 lists the images that copy that UCX.

The shared nixl_ucx_ref and the vLLM framework nixl_ref also feed the CUDA
build stages (dynamo-runtime, SGLang and TRT-LLM EFA wheel_builder, vLLM CUDA
dev headers), which this PR does not intend to change.

- Keep the shared nixl_ucx_ref at v1.22.0 and the vLLM framework nixl_ref at
  v1.4.1; set nixl_ref v1.5.0 and nixl_ucx_ref v1.23.0-rc1 on vllm.xpu and
  vllm.cpu.
- args.Dockerfile: resolve NIXL_UCX_REF from the device section first, as
NIXL_REF already is, falling back to the shared dynamo value.
- Restore the vllm.cuda13.0 vllm_omni_ref pin so a later XPU/CPU bump of the
framework value does not reach CUDA.

Rendered Dockerfiles for vLLM CUDA, SGLang, TRT-LLM and dynamo are
byte-identical to main; only vLLM XPU and CPU change.

Match ai-dynamo#17239 for the XPU block: nixl_ref v1.5.0 and
nixl_ucx_ref v1.23.0-rc1. That is the NIXL line the CUDA runtime
already ships via vLLM v0.32.0's nixl==1.5.0 wheel (built against
UCX v1.23.x).

args.Dockerfile gains the same per-device nixl_ucx_ref lookup as
ai-dynamo#17239; without it the xpu-level key is ignored and UCX stays on the
dynamo default v1.22.0. CPU is untouched: it is still on vLLM v0.31.0
in this PR.

No P0 or P1 found. One P3 on the description. This review read head 2fec2dbab15e68272f3f7791fb57bb1c3736d010.

265eeaaeed applies the suggestions of the review on 2026-10-29 byte for byte, so this review partly checks its own suggestions. The four threads of the earlier reviews have replies with measurements, and they are resolved.

Findings:

  • [P3] The description says "vllm.nixl_ref is updated to v1.5.0 for xpu/cpu", but at this head vllm.nixl_ref stays v1.4.1. The new values are under vllm.xpu and vllm.cpu, and the Details list does not name the new device lookup in container/templates/args.Dockerfile. Please update the description.

Open items:

  • A merge conflict with main at f945f1a8d5, in container/compliance/base_sboms/manifest.json, on the generated_at line only. Please regenerate this file after the merge, and do not edit it by hand.
  • The PR-XPU test jobs did not finish at this head. They passed at 21e2825949 (run 40929848154), where the vLLM XPU runtime Dockerfile is byte-identical to the one at this head.
  • No CI lane builds the vLLM CPU image. Only the renders cover the CPU change.
How the repo regenerates the manifest.

main changed generated_at in #17587. The script container/compliance/base_sboms/capture_baseline_sbom.py writes this file, and it sets generated_at to the time of the run. .github/workflows/auto-dep-upgrade-trigger.yml uses the same script for TRT-LLM. For this PR, the call is:

python3 container/compliance/base_sboms/capture_baseline_sbom.py \
  --from vllm/vllm-openai-xpu:v0.32.0 --baseline vllm/vllm-openai-xpu:v0.32.0 \
  --platform linux/amd64 --prune-superseded

This review did not run the call, because the script reads the registry. Only generated_at conflicts. The rows of both sides merge cleanly.

What this review measured, with controls.
  • The change since 21e2825949: in 12 of the 15 files, the added and removed lines are the same as before. container/context.yaml and container/templates/args.Dockerfile differ by exactly 265eeaaeed. tests/report_pytest_markers.py no longer adds vllm.renderers.chat_utils, because main now adds it in #17072.
  • The merge 2fec2dbab1: a redo with git merge-tree gives the same tree, except for one conflict in tests/report_pytest_markers.py. The commit keeps the lines of both sides.
  • Renders of 39 Dockerfiles with container/render.py, at the merge base 58cfd0ae7b and at this head: the 30 renders outside vLLM XPU and CPU are byte-identical. The 9 vLLM XPU and CPU renders are byte-identical to the renders of the suggested change from 2026-10-29, and they change only these lines:
    • RUNTIME_IMAGE_TAG, and for XPU also BASE_IMAGE_TAG: v0.31.0 to v0.32.0.
    • NIXL_UCX_REF: v1.22.0 to v1.23.0-rc1. NIXL_REF: v1.4.1 to v1.5.0.
    • VLLM_OMNI_REF: v0.31.0rc1 to v0.32.0rc1.
    • The steps that pin and test the Transformers and tokenizers versions are removed.
    • XPU runtime only: BASELINE_SBOM_FILE moves from vllm-openai-xpu@95ac8150 to vllm-openai-xpu@20509fab.
  • Control: at 21e2825949, all 39 renders differ from its merge base ebad592bf0.
  • A merge with main at f945f1a8d5 gives the same result. Over all 130 combinations, 100 renders are byte-identical, and the 30 that change are all vLLM XPU or CPU.
  • CI at this head: PR run 41098460475 passed, with the vLLM CUDA builds, tests and four deploy tests. Its vLLM CUDA test job ran the four test files that this PR changes: 48 passed, 0 failed. The SGLang and TRT-LLM dev and EFA builds were skipped, and their renders are byte-identical to main. check-drift passed. lychee failed on two link timeouts in a docs page that this PR does not change.

Needs merge conflicts and CI failures addressed

Resolve the container/compliance/base_sboms/manifest.json conflict (the
generated_at line only) by regenerating the file with
capture_baseline_sbom.py for vllm/vllm-openai-xpu:v0.32.0 instead of
editing it by hand. The XPU row moves to v0.32.0; main's TRT-LLM rc2
rows from ai-dynamo#17587 are unchanged.
