Overview

Summary

Add a CPU-only CI check that keeps the operator's registered metric family names and Prometheus types aligned with the Operator Metrics reference.

The four current metric families already agree with the catalog. This is a preventive test/CI improvement, not a serving-bug fix or a full Dynamo metrics audit.

Details

  • Register the real observability.InitMetrics() collectors in an isolated registry, exercise their vectors, and scrape the Prometheus HTTP handler in-process.
  • Compare the exposed family names and types with the literal operator metric fields in operator-metrics.mdx. Missing, stale, duplicate, or wrongly typed entries fail. A newly registered but unexercised vector also fails explicitly.
  • Ignore Markdown/MDX examples, comments, label fields, and controller-runtime metrics. Preserve existing metric names and types, including the resources_total gauge.
  • Run the contract in a path-filtered GitHub-hosted workflow. The metriccatalog build tag keeps the documentation-dependent test out of the operator-only Docker build context.
  • Promote the already pinned golang.org/x/net dependency to direct use for HTML tokenization. No dependency version or go.sum changes.

This does not change runtime collectors, labels, units, naming policy, dashboards, or frontend/worker metrics.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with deploy/operator/internal/observability/metrics_catalog_test.go, then .github/workflows/metrics-catalog.yml for the CI command and trigger scope.

Validation

Validated with Go 1.27.3 on Linux amd64 in an isolated CPU-only pod on AKS:

  • The observability package passed 20 randomized race-enabled runs with -race -tags metriccatalog -shuffle=on -count=20.
  • All 19 external fault-injection/control cases behaved as expected. These included actual collector type drift, added collectors, missing/stale/duplicate catalog entries, and harmless documentation examples and comments.
  • An injected CounterVec-to-GaugeVec change passed the existing untagged tests but failed the new contract, demonstrating the coverage gap.
  • The exact proposed CI command, ordinary untagged observability tests, Go vet, gofmt, git diff --check, actionlint, and the repository action-pin check passed.

The AKS validation exercised the real Prometheus HTTP handler in-process, not a live operator deployment or GPU inference. Temporary test resources were removed. Only two focused tests are committed; the mutation harness remains outside the PR.

Related Issues

Closes #17205

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added automated checks to verify that operator metrics match the metrics catalog, including their names and types.
    • Checks now run when relevant operator observability code, dependency files, or metrics documentation change, helping catch catalog inconsistencies earlier.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds a parser and test that compare documented operator metric names and types with real collector output. A GitHub Actions workflow runs the test when relevant files change. The operator module now lists golang.org/x/net as a direct requirement.

Changes

Operator metrics catalog check

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog parsing and validation
deploy/operator/internal/observability/metrics_catalog_test.go
The parser skips indented content, fenced blocks, and HTML/JSX comments. Tests cover excluded fields, multiline fields, duplicate paths, and unsupported types.
Metric comparison and CI execution
deploy/operator/internal/observability/metrics_catalog_test.go, .github/workflows/metrics-catalog.yml, deploy/operator/go.mod
The test registers and exercises real collectors, scrapes their output, and compares metric names and types with the catalog. The workflow runs the tagged test for matching pull requests and pushes to main. golang.org/x/net is listed as a direct requirement.

Explanation

Issue #17205 requires a focused contract check for collectors registered by InitMetrics(), comparison of scraped metric family names and types with operator-metrics.mdx, explicit detection of unexercised collectors, and CPU-only CI triggers for observability or catalog changes. The tagged test registers InitMetrics() in an isolated registry, counts descriptors, exercises resource and webhook vectors, scrapes the in-process Prometheus handler, and compares names and types. Its parser rejects duplicate and unsupported entries and ignores comments, fences, labels, and controller-runtime metrics. The workflow runs the tagged test on ubuntu-24.04 with the required path filters. The summary also reports the required automated validation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The workflow, metriccatalog-tagged test, and direct x/net dependency declaration support the contract check in issue #17205. The reviewed changes do not add runtime collector changes, metric renames, label or unit validation, naming-policy enforcement, dashboard changes, or frontend/worker catalog coverage. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 3 functions across 1 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Treat JSX comment openers that follow prose as comment starts.

The catalog parser enters comment mode only when the trimmed line starts with <!-- or {/*. A line such as ordinary text {/* does not enter comment mode. The following <ParamField> line is then parsed as a catalog entry, even when it sits inside the multiline JSX comment. This adds a documented metric that is never emitted, so the catalog comparison fails.

Find the earliest supported opener anywhere on the line. Parse the text before that opener as an ordinary line, so a ParamField placed before the opener still counts. Set commentEnd only when the matching closer is absent from the rest of the line. Do not end processing with an unconditional continue on the whole line.

Add test cases for ordinary text {/* followed by a multiline operator ParamField and */}, and for a single-line ParamField followed by an inline comment.

⏹️ Dynamo PR CI cancelled — run 40013778455 (attempt 1) on d2a1ec469f

Failure details

No job failed outright: the 4 cancelled Deploy Test jobs all hit the 25-minute job timeout (not fail-fast or a manual cancel) while still waiting for their deployment pods to become ready; deploy-status-check fails only because of them.

##[error]The operation was canceled.
Annotation: The job has exceeded the maximum execution time of 25m0s

All four jobs were cancelled at about 20:34 UTC by the GitHub timeout-minutes limit (annotation: "The job has exceeded the maximum execution time of 25m0s") while ManagedDeployment was still polling pod readiness. The shared cluster's warning events show worker startup probes failing (503 / connection refused) and an SGLang decode pod still in PodInitializing, so no test result was produced (no JUnit XML uploaded). This looks like a K8s scheduling/pod-startup slowdown; a rerun of failed jobs is likely enough.

External PR triage

Blocker: Trusted CI ran on head d2a1ec4. The required deploy-status-check failed only because the vllm/sglang/trtllm Deploy Test / agg* jobs were cancelled on the deploy runner after about 25 minutes. This is infra, not the contributor's fault. No human review since 2026-10-23.

Next action (@ai-dynamo/dynamo-ops-codeowners @ai-dynamo/dynamo-operator-codeowners @ai-dynamo/dynamo-observability-codeowners): Re-run the failed jobs in run 40013778455, then review.

Supply-chain audit of d2a1ec469f: Looks safe. The PR adds the workflow .github/workflows/metrics-catalog.yml: pull_request/push triggers only, permissions: contents: read, SHA-pinned actions/checkout and actions/setup-go, persist-credentials: false, and a single go test step. It uses no secrets and downloads nothing. In go.mod, golang.org/x/net v0.60.0 moves from indirect to direct with no version change.

Status as of 2026-10-28 for head d2a1ec469f. This comment is edited in place on later runs.
