- Line 701: Update the documentation for the admin routes to require an HTTP
gateway with path-aware filtering that blocks those routes from inference
clients; if no such gateway is available, advise operators not to enable the
routes on a client-facing frontend.
Review comments at @tests/router/common.py:
- Line 1652: Update the extra_env configuration in both router helpers using
KVRouterProcess and FrontendRouterProcess to set DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API
to None alongside enabling DYN_ENABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API, so an inherited
disable setting is removed from each child process.

Drop DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API; DYN_ENABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API is the only switch. Log when the admin API is enabled instead of on every default startup, and keep the admin routes in the full-surface OpenAPI export. Revert the release-ledger and port-forward docs changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: jthomson04 <jwillthomson19@gmail.com>
Keep the admin API on by default, but take /router_policy, /router_policy/busy_threshold and /busy_threshold off the inference port. They now run on their own listener, bound to 127.0.0.1:8002 by default (DYN_FRONTEND_ADMIN_HOST / DYN_FRONTEND_ADMIN_PORT), with the same TLS settings as the HTTP service. If the port was set explicitly, a bind failure aborts startup. On the default port it only logs an error, so several frontends can still run on one host. Restore DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API as the off switch and drop DYN_ENABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API. The inference port's /openapi.json omits the admin routes, and route_docs() still lists them. The admin API (/router_policy, /router_policy/busy_threshold and /busy_threshold) is now off by default. DYN_ENABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API=1 (or enable_admin_api(true)) starts it on its own listener at 127.0.0.1:8002 (DYN_FRONTEND_ADMIN_HOST / DYN_FRONTEND_ADMIN_PORT). Because it only runs when requested, a bind failure always aborts startup, matching the RL listener. This drops the best-effort bind on the default port and DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API. generate-frontend-openapi enables the admin routes so the full-surface export still lists them. Reuse spawn_service and check the off-by-default case on the built service instead of probing a second listener. Use the shared reserved_ports helper in the router E2E tests instead of a local copy. Keep the admin listener settings in the frontend configuration reference and link to it from the router pages. The PR removesDYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API, turns the admin routes off by default, and moves them from the inference port to127.0.0.1:8002. On 2026-10-28,mainadded av1.7.0 - Upcomingsection (#17215). That was after the first commit's entry left this PR on 2026-10-23. In each run, one macOS timing or socket test failed on each tree. In a second run, both trees failed the same test: silent_tls_client_is_closed_after_handshake_timeout.
With the admin API on, the inference port returns 404 for the six admin method and path pairs. Its /openapi.json lists 20 paths and no admin path. The admin port answers GET /busy_threshold and GET /router_policy with 200, and route_docs() still lists all six admin entries.
With TLS on, the admin port serves HTTPS (HTTP/2) and refuses plain HTTP. With a client CA set, it also refuses a client without a certificate, the same as the inference port.
When the admin port is taken, run_with_listener returns Failed to bind admin listener on 127.0.0.1:<port>: Address already in use (os error 48).
generate-frontend-openapi writes a byte-identical file at the base and the head. The file has 31 paths, including /busy_threshold, /router_policy and /router_policy/busy_threshold.
No file outside this PR calls an admin route on port 8000 or sets DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API. The only other mention of that name is the v1.3.0 entry in deprecations.mdx. No other default port in a frontend pod is 8002.
The head merges with main 479d12dd without a conflict. Pre Merge run 40781229873 tested that merge, and rust-tests (.) passed both admin tests and the environment_names tests. PR run 40781235538 passed on the head. Its two dynamo-runtime / test / sequential jobs passed test_busy_threshold_endpoint[nats], test_busy_threshold_endpoint[tcp] and test_mocker_kv_router_threshold_none_disables_rejection.
This review ran the HTTP service in-process. It did not start the dynamo.frontend process.
…ault A startup that stops aborting on an admin bind failure now fails the test after 10 s instead of hanging. The admin test also asserts that the default admin address is loopback. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: jthomson04 <jwillthomson19@gmail.com>

Docs-only review. I checked the pages against the code at this head: off by default, 127.0.0.1:8002 defaults, a bind failure aborts startup, the TLS acceptor is reused, and the routes are dropped from the inference port's /openapi.json. The docs match the code on all of these, and every page that showed :8000/busy_threshold or :8000/router_policy was updated. Inline comments cover migration clarity and the Kubernetes steps for enabling the API.
Not in the diff, so not inline:
docs/fern/pages/reference/general/releases/deprecations.mdx(~L641): the #11123 entry still says the admin API is "now on by default; disable [it] withDYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API". After this PR, both halves are wrong. This is a breaking change for anyone calling the admin routes on:8000, so it needs a new Behavioral entry. Suggested Migrate: text: setDYN_ENABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API=1and call port8002(DYN_FRONTEND_ADMIN_PORT); the listener binds to127.0.0.1, so on Kubernetes usekubectl port-forward pod/<frontend-pod> 8002:8002;DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_APIis removed and ignored.- Nit:
request-rejection-architecture.md:87mentionsPOST /busy_thresholdwithout a port. It could link tofrontend-configuration.mdx#adminlikerouter-operations.mdandworker-filtering.mdnow do. - Nit:
request-rejection.md:150(troubleshooting) could say "on the admin port (8002)". After this change, the likely failure is a 404 from:8000.
Give the admin listener's default address, TLS behavior, and OpenAPI coverage in the reference, and say how an out-of-pod controller reaches it. The Kubernetes request-rejection steps now show where the env var goes and port-forward to each Frontend pod instead of only the first. The admin routes are off by default, move off the inference port to 127.0.0.1:8002, and DYN_DISABLE_FRONTEND_ADMIN_API is removed. Record the change and its migration steps under v1.7.0 - Upcoming. Overview
The frontend admin routes (
/router_policy,/router_policy/busy_threshold,/busy_threshold) can change routing for every client and have no authentication, yet they are on by default on the inference port. This PR turns them off by default. When enabled, they move to their own loopback listener.Key Changes
