Summary

Unify SGLang /generate and vLLM /inference/v1/generate behind one HTTP handler and statically linked format plugins. Remove duplicate handlers and obsolete response aggregation.

  • Shared frontend: routing, cancellation, HTTP/SSE delivery, metrics, and errors.
  • Backend-owned crates: schemas, validation, request projection, response assembly, and tests in lib/generate-formats/{sglang,vllm}.
  • Replaceable catalog: custom hosts select a compiled format through DYN_GENERATE_FORMAT. SGLang codecs extend native field rules and sequence joining through ClientCodec.
  • Sidecars: both return LLMEngineOutput; SGLang reuses its format crate for native response inspection.

Native-generate migration remains disabled, and vLLM streaming remains unsupported, matching the original baseline. Chat and completions retain their handlers.

Stack: #16983 → #16977 → #16978 → #16997. Draft children add SGLang migration, an external Base64+zstd example, and generic request tracing. Merge in order. This PR replaces #16676; its review history remains there.

Part of #16675. Part of #16674. Closes #16762. Closes #17088.

Compatibility

The audit covers extraction errors, status codes, error privacy, readiness order, routing hints, opaque fields, public IDs, and cancellation precedence. Intentional changes:

  • SGLang uses the shared request/response metrics lifecycle and private engine dispatch IDs.
  • Malformed decode responses trigger cancellation; invalid or incomplete P/D expert blobs are omitted.
  • Complete prefill expert data survives when prefill produces the only output token.
  • vLLM retains terminal sampling masks alongside prompt logprobs (fix(vllm): preserve sampling-mask metadata in the Rust sidecar #16762).
  • vLLM accepts the valid unscored one-token prompt frame and fills missing native prompt-logprob token labels (fix(vllm): preserve one-token prompt logprobs and native token labels #17088). Malformed arrays still fail; worker-provided labels survive. These backend-owned fixes require no plugin API changes.
  • Duplicate format routes return a configuration error instead of a startup panic.
  • The shared handler mints a private internal request ID per request (fix(frontend): mint internal request ids on the server for HTTP and gRPC #17032). The client ID (x-request-id, body rid or request_id) is only echoed in the response and the worker envelope.
  • SGLang sidecar: a prefill terminal frame whose finish_reason.type is abort, error or cancelled is now an error instead of a normal prefill stop. With a 4xx status_code it is Backend(InvalidArgument) carrying the engine message, status_code and err_type; otherwise Backend(Unknown). On decode, a plain abort with no status_code and no err_type is still FinishReason::Cancelled.
  • SGLang sidecar: a stream that closes before a terminal frame is Backend(StreamIncomplete) (backend.stream_incomplete) instead of Backend(Unknown) (backend.unknown).

Native sidecar /generate is an RL path requiring matching frontend and sidecar versions. Remove old-envelope control hydration and SGLang’s request-ID opt-in handshake; normal chat/completions compatibility is unchanged.

Backend crate import paths change. Synchronous sidecar startup APIs remain available. Concurrent requests still need unique public IDs for shared-runtime response correlation.

Validation

Current head 2ba42d5a36 (on main cda26d4cdf): workspace cargo check --all-targets, the targeted dynamo-llm tests (System One, generate format, HTTP service, request trace), the tests of the three generate crates, strict Clippy, the Python bindings check, formatting, build_codeowners.py --strict and changed-file pre-commit pass. CI on the previous head e5b66e475c, which differs only by the CODEOWNERS row: 78 passed, 0 failed, including the SGLang, vLLM and TensorRT-LLM GPU runtime tests, the SGLang deploy tests and the SGLang N-2 compatibility test. The sidecar end-to-end tests run only after merge.

Earlier validation (older heads)

The results below were measured on the heads they name, before the latest rebases.

Validation on 2026-10-23: merged upstream fc9b9969cb, preserving live request/token accounting and SGLang HTTP connection retirement. Base head f3cf552c6f passes 326 CPU tests independently. Full-stack head 1d59b498a9 passes 374 CPU tests: 334 backend/sidecar/HTTP tests, 24 focused generate tests, 11 tracing integration tests, and five external codec tests. Strict all-target Clippy with Rust 1.96.1, formatting, ownership checks, and changed-file pre-commit pass. GPU tests were not rerun for this merge or the review fixes.

Route collision tests no longer create duplicate process-wide paths. Multimodal fallback fixtures assert their exact rejection causes. The vLLM worker-metadata fixture now enters with the migration PR that adds its field, so the base builds independently.

  • CPU coverage includes 3,184 LLM tests, backend/sidecar suites, HTTP compatibility cases, property laws, and five external codec tests.
  • Differential coverage: 1,024 randomized P/D/stream cases and four recorded streams match the original SGLang assembler.
  • Latest performance fixes: 11 base-PR HTTP tests and 36 complete-stack HTTP/format tests pass, including 512-case property laws and exact SSE-byte checks. Strict Clippy, formatting, and changed-file pre-commit hooks pass.
  • Earlier complete-stack GPU coverage: 99/99 SGLang aggregation/P/D/compatibility cases and 48 disconnect/abort checks. Earlier fault tests completed 16 streams with eight retries and exact token/logprob/expert transport checks.

GPU tests used PrimeIntellect/qwen3-moe-tiny on a B200. Full expert P/D coverage used a test-only SGLang #44002 backport and flashinfer_trtllm_routed; Dynamo's dependency pin is unchanged. Unpatched-engine tests check omission of incomplete expert data. This GPU evidence covers development builds of the complete stack before the latest CPU optimizations, not each intermediate PR. The external codec still lacks live-engine qualification. The vLLM results below cover complete-stack head 5e09cf5333, before the subsequent CPU-tested cleanup.

Latest vLLM qualification (2026-10-22), complete-stack head 5e09cf5333: 156/156 live checks passed with vLLM 0.31.0 and the same tiny Qwen model on a B200: 52 aggregated, 52 NIXL P/D, and 52 processed-logprob/sampling-mask checks. Native parity includes full prompt-logprob JSON; tests also cover one-token inputs, stop tokens, chat controls, 32 concurrent requests per configuration, all 48 acknowledged cancellation RPCs, exactly-once tracing with session/replay/token counts, and 91 audited P/D handoffs. P/D engines share one GPU; cross-GPU/node transport is not qualified. Routed-expert transport, vLLM migration, and generate SSE remain unsupported.

Both #17088 regression tests failed before the fix and pass afterward. Fresh CPU validation: 173 vLLM format/sidecar tests plus 12 shared HTTP tests, strict all-target Clippy, formatting, and changed-file pre-commit hooks pass. GPU tests use a fresh release frontend and dev-profile sidecar, with source/artifact hashes recorded.

The previous cleanup removed a further 162 production lines (261 overall) by deleting native-generate rolling-upgrade shims and deriving transparent sampling serialization. Earlier full-stack validation passed 338 CPU tests, including real plugin-to-sidecar projection, both format/sidecar suites, shared HTTP coverage, SGLang cancellation and decode-transfer checks against mock engines, and vLLM control delivery over gRPC. Strict all-target Clippy and changed-file pre-commit pass. Earlier parser cleanup also passed 1,302 exact differential comparisons. GPU tests were not rerun for these cleanups.

Performance

Earlier four-core release frontend benchmarks, before the #17088 compatibility fixes, used fixed baseline mock workers: 81 accepted runs, 4.32 million requests, zero request errors. Reusing SSE buffers reduced this PR's logprob-heavy CPU cost from 2.13 to 1.92 ms/request, versus 1.88 ms before the stack. Remaining base-PR CPU differences are about +1% for streaming/short requests, +2% for logprobs, and −10% for long inputs; vLLM plain-token generation and chat stay close to baseline.

The complete stack also moves consumed prompt snapshots. Its logprob overhead falls from about 34% to 5%. Residual costs remain: low-concurrency short requests add 61 µs CPU/request (+14%), and saturated short-request p99 is 3.21 → 4.52 ms. Away from saturation, p99 is 2.11 → 2.21 ms. These measurements do not establish zero overhead.

This measures frontend cost, not sidecar/GPU throughput. The standard mocker does not supply vLLM logprobs. Optional local-file tracing adds about 1.4% CPU for short inputs and 0.1% for long inputs; all 639,514 trace records passed count, token, ID, and replay-hash consistency checks.

Against upstream fc9b9969cb, this base PR is +134 lines overall, including tests, the testkit, configuration, and fixtures. It replaces both backend-specific HTTP handlers with the shared handler and backend-owned format crates.

Walkthrough

This change introduces a shared /generate format registry and HTTP adapter, with separate SGLang and vLLM implementations. It moves SGLang response handling into its format crate, adds per-dispatch request IDs in the SGLang sidecar, and preserves sampling-mask metadata in the vLLM sidecar.

Changes

Generate format framework

Layer / File(s) Summary
Format contracts and catalog
Cargo.toml, lib/llm/src/generate_format.rs, lib/generate-format-catalog/*, lib/bindings/python/..., lib/llm/src/discovery/worker_set.rs, .github/codeowners/*
The LLM crate adds format contracts, a registry, and environment-based format selection. The default catalog registers SGLang and vLLM formats. Python core initialization registers and installs the catalog.
Shared HTTP routing and tracking
lib/llm/src/http/service/*, lib/llm/src/preprocessor.rs, lib/llm/src/protocols/common/timing.rs, lib/generate-format-catalog/tests/http.rs
Service construction resolves generate paths and formats, then builds routes through a shared adapter. The adapter handles request binding, dispatch, unary and SSE responses, errors, cancellation, and metrics. Routing metadata is ingested by RequestTracker. Tests cover route configuration and HTTP behavior.
vLLM format implementation
lib/generate-formats/vllm/*, lib/llm/src/protocols/openai/*, lib/llm/src/types.rs
The vLLM crate adds request validation, response aggregation, preprocessing, and multimodal routing projection. Tests cover request and response handling, aggregation, and routing metadata. The previous vLLM protocol implementation is removed from the LLM crate.
SGLang format and response assembly
lib/generate-formats/sglang/*, lib/llm/src/protocols/response_merge.rs, lib/llm/src/protocols/sglang*, components/src/dynamo/sglang/*
The SGLang crate adds request handling, response inspection, rule-based merging, and a simulation-based testkit. The previous SGLang protocol and merge implementation is removed, and the component contract test points to the relocated merge rules.
SGLang sidecar request IDs
lib/sidecar/sglang/*, lib/sidecar/testkit/tests/*
The sidecar assigns unique IDs to native HTTP dispatches and uses them for abort handling and response inspection. Tests cover retry cancellation, ID mapping, and incomplete streams.
vLLM sidecar metadata
lib/sidecar/vllm/src/convert.rs, lib/sidecar/vllm/src/convert/response_tests.rs
The sidecar stores nonempty sampling masks in engine metadata and merges prompt logprobs into that metadata. Tests cover mask and prompt-logprob combinations.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: Low · up to 467c0

The unified /generate routing, the format plugins, and the sidecar changes show no confirmed production defect. One route-collision test can make unrelated parallel tests fail intermittently, and several multimodal fallback tests do not exercise the checks their names describe. Both are test-quality follow-ups, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Explanation

[#16762] is satisfied. lib/sidecar/vllm/src/convert.rs preserves non-empty sampling_mask rows in LLMEngineOutput.engine_data and merges prompt logprobs into the same object. The response tests cover masks alone, masks with prompt logprobs, and earlier prompt-only frames.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the purpose, key changes, compatibility impact, validation, performance, linked issues, and ongoing limitations. It does not use the template headings exactly and omits the Issues and Ongoing Work section and checklist, but the required information is mostly present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request includes substantial changes beyond the coding scope of [#16762], including a shared HTTP handler, SGLang and vLLM format crates, catalog registration, routing changes, and SGLang cancellation changes. These changes do not implement or directly support preservation of vLLM sampling-mask metadata.

Resolution

Split the shared-handler, format-plugin, catalog, routing, and SGLang changes into separate linked work, or link active issues that explicitly require those changes. Keep this pull request limited to the vLLM sampling-mask and prompt-logprob preservation change and its tests.

lib/generate-formats/vllm/src/tests.rs: 1

305-413: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

These fallback cases fail on a different check than their names describe.

Four cases omit kwargs_data: "overlapping placeholders", "unsupported modality", "unequal item counts", and "out-of-order placeholders". In generate_mm_routing_info (lib.rs lines 100-103), the kwargs_data check runs before the modality, length, ordering, and overlap checks. All four cases therefore return "features.kwargs_data must be a JSON object".

The test asserts only mm_routing_info.is_none(), so it still passes. As a result, the overlap, ordering, unequal-count, and modality checks have no test coverage. If one of those checks breaks, this test does not fail.

Fix:

  1. Add kwargs_data to each case.
  2. Assert the exact error from generate_mm_routing_info, as sparse_and_ambiguous_multimodal_layouts_are_handled already does.

Non-blocking Cargo cleanup: could we centralize the new format-crate dependencies in the root [workspace.dependencies] and inherit them from workspace members?

The root already declares dynamo-llm with default-features = false, while the new catalog and both format crates repeat its relative path and feature policy. Add the two format packages alongside it:

# Root Cargo.toml
[workspace.dependencies]
dynamo-sglang-generate = { path = "lib/generate-formats/sglang", version = "1.7.0" }
dynamo-vllm-generate = { path = "lib/generate-formats/vllm", version = "1.7.0" }

Then use workspace = true for the applicable dependencies in the catalog, format crates, and sidecar manifests. Preserve the catalog's testkit feature on its dev dependency:

# lib/generate-format-catalog/Cargo.toml
[dependencies]
dynamo-llm = { workspace = true }
dynamo-sglang-generate = { workspace = true }
dynamo-vllm-generate = { workspace = true }

[dev-dependencies]
dynamo-sglang-generate = { workspace = true, features = ["testkit"] }

This keeps paths, versions, and the declared default-feature policy in one place and reduces manifest drift. The excluded Python binding should retain explicit dependency declarations because it has its own workspace. This is a manifest-maintenance improvement; it does not require changing the crate boundaries.

Done in e721abe: dynamo-sglang-generate and dynamo-vllm-generate are now in the root [workspace.dependencies], and the catalog, both format crates and the SGLang/vLLM sidecars use workspace = true (catalog dev-dep keeps features = ["testkit"]). The Python binding keeps explicit paths.

Five inline suggestions covering request-buffer lifetime, JSON allocation, metadata ownership, and exchange synchronization. Rechecked against the current head. The comments describe source-verified work and memory costs; latency and throughput gains have not been benchmarked.

Found few issues where we can improve performance.
Please take a look, overall changes looks great!

Serve SGLang /generate and vLLM /inference/v1/generate through one shared
HTTP handler and statically linked, backend-owned format crates
(lib/generate-formats/{sglang,vllm}) selected via a replaceable catalog
(lib/generate-format-catalog, DYN_GENERATE_FORMAT). Remove the duplicate
per-backend handlers and obsolete response aggregation. Both sidecars
return LLMEngineOutput; the SGLang sidecar reuses its format crate for
native response inspection.

Part of #16675. Part of #16674. Closes #16762. Closes #17088.

Declare dynamo-sglang-generate and dynamo-vllm-generate in the root
[workspace.dependencies] and use workspace = true for them and for
dynamo-llm in the catalog, format crates and sidecars. The excluded
Python binding keeps explicit paths since it has its own workspace.

No P0 or P1 found. This review read head e5b66e475c453440d2bb7562cfee727c2f93ae21 and found two P3 items.

  • [P3] Review of lib/llm/src/generate_format/error.rs goes to the runtime team, because areas.yaml claims generate_format.rs but not its folder. The inline comment on .github/codeowners/areas.yaml:14 has a tested suggestion.
  • [P3] The description does not match this head. The Validation section names earlier heads (f3cf552c6f, 1d59b498a9, 5e09cf5333). The Compatibility list does not name two SGLang sidecar changes, which the first table below shows. Please update both parts.

Open item: five review threads from 2026-10-30 are still open. This head contains each change that the replies describe. main requires resolved threads, so these threads block the merge.

Two SGLang sidecar changes that the Compatibility list does not name.

Measured by calling the response code of the SGLang sidecar at base 50385d6954 and at this head.

SGLang /generate frame at the sidecar base this head
prefill terminal with finish_reason.type abort, error or cancelled, and a 4xx status_code normal prefill stop error Backend(InvalidArgument), with the engine message, status_code and err_type
the same frame with another status_code or none normal prefill stop error Backend(Unknown)
stream that closes before a terminal frame Backend(Unknown), reason backend.unknown Backend(StreamIncomplete), reason backend.stream_incomplete

On the decode path, a plain abort with no status_code and no err_type is an ordinary cancellation and gives FinishReason::Cancelled. On the prefill path, the same frame now gives Backend(Unknown).

What this review measured at the base, at this head, and at a merge with `main`.
  • Requests through the frontend: 52 requests to /generate and /inference/v1/generate, with a test-double worker, at the base and at this head. In 30 requests the status, headers, body and metrics are identical. These cover every JSON extraction error, the body limit, validation errors, the 501 and 405 replies, an unknown model, and seven dispatch error types. The workers received identical requests in every case. Seven vLLM requests differ only in latency sums. All other differences are changes that the description lists. SGLang requests now update the shared request metrics. meta_info.id carries the client's ID. Prompt logprobs get decoded_token. If prefill makes the only token, its expert data now survives.
  • Duplicate route paths: the base panics with Overlapping method route. Handler for `POST /inference/v1/generate` already exists. This head returns duplicate Generate route path: /inference/v1/generate from build(), and both callers return that error.
  • DYN_GENERATE_FORMAT: no value, an empty value and sglang select SGLang. vllm selects vLLM, and /generate then accepts POST only. With /generate on, an unknown name fails build() with unknown generate format "bogus"; linked: sglang, vllm. With /generate off, build() accepts an unknown name.
  • #16762 and #17088: the two new tests in lib/sidecar/vllm/src/convert/response_tests.rs fail at the base and pass at this head. The base drops the sampling mask, and it rejects the one-token prompt frame with prompt logprob array lengths do not match expected count 1.
  • Tests: the dynamo-llm lib tests pass at the base (3,989), at this head (3,892) and at the merge (3,905). The tests of the three new crates and of the SGLang and vLLM sidecars pass at this head and at the merge.
  • Deliberate breaks of merge_rules.json: /output_ids as attempt instead of delta fails three tests. /meta_info/input_token_logprobs as attempt instead of prompt fails sglang_native_format_passes_every_law.
  • Lock files: Cargo.lock and lib/bindings/python/Cargo.lock add only the three local crates. cargo fetch --locked passes for all four lock files at this head and at the merge. A lock file with one block removed fails it.
  • CODEOWNERS: the generator output matches the committed file, and no path loses an owner.
  • Merge with main: the merge with 118467888d has no conflicts, builds, and passes the tests above. The merge with the current tip f945f1a8d5 also has no conflicts, and its two newer commits change only lib/global-frontend and lib/global-router. The stacked PRs #16977, #16978 and #16997 apply without conflicts onto that main plus a squash of this PR.
  • CI on this head: 126 check runs, 81 passed, 45 skipped, none failed.

This review sent 52 requests through both generate routes at the base and at this head. It also tested DYN_GENERATE_FORMAT, duplicate route paths, the SGLang and vLLM sidecars, and a merge with main. #16762 and #17088 reproduce at the base and are fixed at this head. The lock files add only the three local crates, and the regenerated CODEOWNERS matches.

- Engine loss (#17972): api.v1 has no state stream, so poll GetModelInfo
  every 1 s, each poll bounded by min(connect_attempt_timeout, 5 s), and
report "SGLang engine lost: ..." through main's engine_lost hook after 3
failed polls in a row. HealthCheck is not polled: it runs a probe
generation and fails while the scheduler is paused.
- Media (#16203): not ported. Requests with multi_modal_data keep the
stack's "multimodal payloads are not supported" refusal; MediaSupport,
  media_support, require_media_support and the runtime.v1 media wire-tag
  test are dropped. Main's mm_processor_kwargs, media-uuid and
  encoder_result refusals stay.
- Native HTTP (#16983): keep the per-dispatch rid and inspect(). Abort
goes through the api.v1 Abort RPC with the dispatch rid, falling back to
ctx.id(); main's HTTP /abort_request call is dropped, and its
malformed-output abort cases now check the Abort RPC.
- #16570: drop the default-chat-template-kwargs warning and its test;
api.v1 GetServerInfo has no such field.
- Keep #17710's migration mapping and #16303's logit_bias refusal.
- Remove the runtime.v1 sglang.proto and headless.rs. proto/README.md now
  names sglang#45859 and #46637 as service.proto's sources.
- .pre-commit-config.yaml: union of both exclude patterns.
