Superseded by upstream PR #16983, which incorporates the review fixes here. Review history is retained in this closed PR. Current stack: #16983 → #16977 → #16978.

Summary

Unify SGLang /generate and vLLM /inference/v1/generate behind one HTTP handler and statically linked format plugins. Delete the duplicate handlers and obsolete stream-aggregation paths. The shared handler owns routing, cancellation, HTTP/SSE delivery, and metrics. Each backend owns its schema, validation, routing projection, response assembly, and tests in lib/generate-formats/{sglang,vllm}.

The default catalog registers both formats; custom hosts can replace the catalog dependency and select a /generate format with DYN_GENERATE_FORMAT. Python initialization explicitly installs the catalog. The SGLang sidecar reuses backend-owned response inspection; both sidecars deliver LLMEngineOutput.

Preserve opaque fields, session context, multimodal routing, typed errors, and terminal metadata. Private dispatch/context IDs isolate requests with duplicate public IDs. Malformed decode output triggers abort. vLLM terminal sampling masks survive alongside prompt logprobs.

This is the first PR in a three-PR stack. Native /generate migration remains disabled for both backends, matching main; vLLM streaming remains unsupported. SGLang migration is draft #16977; the external Base64+zstd codec is draft #16978, stacked on #16977. Existing synchronous sidecar startup APIs are retained, and neither performance-owned mocker sidecar test changes.

The new ownership rules assign each format tree to its backend. They apply to subsequent PRs after this PR merges.

Part of #16675. Part of #16674. Closes #16762.

Validation

  • 3,485 unit tests passed: 3,184 LLM, 51 backend-format, and 250 sidecar tests; 13 existing LLM tests ignored.
  • 49 integration tests passed: six catalog HTTP tests, 35 sidecar integration tests, and eight mocker sidecar tests using the retained synchronous startup APIs.
  • Three format property laws and two Base64 properties run 512 cases each. Recorded SGLang fixtures and four checks against pinned SGLang v0.5.22 source pass.
  • Strict all-target Clippy passed for LLM, both format crates, catalog, both sidecars, and Python bindings.
  • Changed-file hooks, formatting, whitespace, cargo-machete, and strict CODEOWNERS coverage passed.

Diff against the PR base: 59 files, +6,659 / -7,475, net -816 lines. Large backend moves are included in those totals.

CPU and mock-worker validation only; no GPU or rebuilt-wheel qualification is claimed.

Move SGLang's native /generate behind a GenerateFormat trait in dynamo-llm so
deployments can change the /generate request and response shape by linking a
format catalog, without forking Dynamo. A format owns parsing, joining streamed
and P/D chunks, client rendering, and continuing migrated requests; the
frontend handler only routes, dispatches, and accounts.

- Per-field classes (delta, prompt, sequence_final, first_attempt,
output_offset, cumulative, attempt) drive chunk, P/D, and migration joins.
- Generate requests now migrate through their format's continuation: retries
rebuild the budget from the original body, keep prompt-side outputs, and
block on engine state a retry cannot rebuild.
- The SGLang sidecar reads responses through the format, gives each dispatch
its own SGLang rid, reports mid-stream EOF as StreamIncomplete, and
  advertises engine defaults.
- generate_format::testkit: an SGLang simulator and property laws (stream
join, P/D, migration, blocked requests, malformed input), plus fixtures
  recorded from SGLang v0.5.21.

Replace the custom vLLM /inference/v1/generate handler with a vLLM
GenerateFormat served by the shared format handler, the same plugin path as
SGLang's /generate. The format keeps vLLM's request envelope, multimodal KV
routing projection, priority inversion, header precedence, error shape, and
unary response assembly; the shared handler gains vLLM's response metrics.

Formats now bind to the selected worker set, so worker-dependent projection
(block size, LoRA, engine defaults) happens after model resolution.

Construct routed requests once after worker selection, remove duplicate vLLM envelope and tracker setup, and consolidate dispatch tests. Preserve canonical backend error identities and public validation messages. Keep retry abort IDs independent of late cleanup from previous attempts.

Walkthrough

The change introduces a shared /generate format API and HTTP dispatch path, with SGLang and vLLM format implementations. It adds response assembly and continuation-aware migration, plus format testkit coverage. Native SGLang dispatch now uses shared response inspection and tracks per-dispatch request IDs.

Changes

Adds format and exchange contracts, a classified response assembler, request continuations for retry preparation, and Generate pipeline construction using configured migration limits and worker engine metadata.
SGLang format, joining, and migration
lib/llm/src/protocols/sglang/*, lib/llm/src/generate_format/testkit/*, lib/llm/tests/data/sglang/generate/*, components/src/dynamo/sglang/tests/*
Adds SGLang request handling, response inspection and joining, migration rules, and generated scenarios and laws that exercise stream joining, topology equivalence, and retry behavior.
vLLM unary format
lib/llm/src/protocols/openai/vllm_generate.rs, lib/llm/src/protocols/openai/generate.rs, lib/llm/src/protocols/openai.rs
Adds vLLM request projection, unary response aggregation, and image metadata routing checks. Streaming requests are rejected with status 501, and migration is unsupported.
Shared HTTP dispatch and catalog wiring
lib/llm/src/http/service/format_generate.rs, lib/llm/src/http/service/service_v2.rs, lib/llm/src/http/service/disconnect.rs, lib/generate-format-catalog/*, lib/bindings/python/*, Cargo.toml, CODEOWNERS, .github/codeowners/areas.yaml
Routes SGLang and vLLM through a shared HTTP adapter. Adds a catalog crate and registers it during Python binding setup. Adds workspace dependency and ownership entries.
Native SGLang transport integration
lib/sidecar/sglang/src/*, lib/llm/src/protocols/sglang/inspect.rs
Uses shared SGLang response inspection in native HTTP generation and decode draining. Tracks native request IDs for aborts and classifies premature stream closure as StreamIncomplete.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f072c

The shared generate path is mergeable with one small follow-up. If a single response event during decode drain cannot be parsed, the abort is skipped. The engine may then keep working on an abandoned request until that request finishes.

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in direct issue [#16675]. format_generate::router provides one shared POST/PUT lifecycle for SGLang and vLLM. GenerateFormat, Registry, and the linked catalog provide format selection without HTTP-handler edits. The vLLM format preserves its envelope, routing projection, header precedence, priority behavior, unary contract, 501 streaming response, and disabled migration. SGLang codecs provide response joining and safe migration. The testkit and property laws cover stream/unary equivalence, topology equivalence, migration, blocked retries, and malformed responses. The old SGLang handler and separate stream merger were deleted, which removes duplicate lifecycle code. The reported validation covers the shared routes and sidecars.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue [#16675]. Catalog registration, Python binding installation, engine metadata, migration wiring, response assembly, sidecar dispatch IDs, and error handling support the shared format-plugin path or its required compatibility behavior. Tests, fixtures, ownership declarations, and build configuration support the implementation. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Agreed; the UUID substitution was reverted in #16983. preprocessed_context_from_headers again accepts and preserves the supplied request ID, with explicit ID assertions in its tests. Cancellation isolation is handled inside the SGLang sidecar using context allocation identity, without changing the public/runtime request ID.

this is messy between sglang/vllm. Does this get resolved in a later PR in the stack? The codepath here should be agnostic of sglang v.s. vllm.

Resolved in the replacement base PR #16983. Service construction now resolves a list of (path, SharedFormat) entries, then builds every route through the same format-agnostic handler and derives readiness capabilities from those formats. Backend names remain at startup only to preserve the existing backend enable/path environment variables and select the catalog entries. Migration, codecs, and tracing extend that same path in the child PRs.

The native generate path bypasses the text preprocessor, so it needs to consume standalone-router metadata itself. ingest_routing_data extracts the existing timing/worker/query-token updates into one helper used by both the regular preprocessor and the shared generate metric collector. Both callers drain the internal field before client response formatting. forwarded_router_metadata_reaches_the_tracker_and_leaves_the_payload verifies the tracker receives all three fields and that routing_data is removed from the output.
