Summary

Part of #16000. This PR covers its dead-leaf reclamation; exact-size split prefixes and leaf-slack caps are not included.

CRTC removals change coverage only. A leaf whose last holder evicts it stays linked until the 5-minute stale-leaf sweep, which also stalls an event lane while it runs. Under eviction churn, most of the indexer's memory ends up in dead leaves. At the end of a 2,048-worker Mooncake replay, 73% of nodes were dead.

This PR reclaims dead leaves as they die:

  • Lane drain. Each node records parent_tail, the hash of the block before its edge. A node's head never moves, so its parent is always the node whose edge ends with that block.
    • A removal that kills a leaf finds that parent through the root, an anchor, or the evicting worker's lookup, then queues the leaf on its lane.
    • The lane unlinks queued leaves when it is idle: at most 256 at a time, and all of them before a flush. Each parent's leaves go under one try-locked gate.
  • Background backstop. ThreadPoolIndexer gets a maintenance thread in place of the lane-scheduled CleanupStaleChildren task, which only CRTC used.
    • CRTC sweeps there once 1,024 nodes have died or 30 s have passed. It catches leaves the drain missed: a parent that was busy or not in the lookup, or a leaf still referenced.
    • The sweep walks the tree without gates and unlinks each parent's dead children under one try-locked gate.

Unlinking uses the sweep's existing conditions: the child is attached, holder-less, childless and referenced only by its parent. Removal still never splits or merges nodes.

Validation

Benchmarks ran on a bench-instrumented prototype of this design, with the same algorithm and constants, against main's behaviour in the same binary. Since then the PR has changed only small details: it has no runtime switches, it queues a leaf only from the removal that kills it, and an overflowing queue drains oldest first.

Memory, Mooncake replay at its end:

main this PR
Dead nodes, 128 workers, block size 128 341,174 0
Dead nodes, 2,048 workers, block size 16, with eviction 251,025 5
Indexer heap, 2,048 workers 4.49 GiB 2.28 GiB
Peak RSS, 2,048 workers 14.60 GiB 12.93 GiB

Performance, using the CRTC protocol from INDEXER_BENCH.md (Mooncake, 128 workers, dup 20, length 4, 8 event workers): 20 fresh-process rounds on one node, alternating arm order. Each value is this PR / main, a ratio of medians with a bootstrap 95% CI.

Load Metric main this PR Ratio [95% CI]
Overload, 750 ms Write capacity, M block ops/s 69.3 81.2 1.17 [1.15, 1.18]
Overload Update latency p50 1.68 s 1.52 s 0.90 [0.89, 0.92]
Overload Update latency p99 3.81 s 3.14 s 0.82 [0.82, 0.85]
Keep-up, 12 s Lookup service p50 4.03 µs 3.74 µs 0.93 [0.87, 0.95]
Keep-up Lookup service p99 22.3 µs 23.0 µs 1.03 [0.97, 1.06]
Keep-up Update latency p50 74 µs 52 µs 0.70 [0.68, 0.79]
Keep-up Update latency p99 1.68 ms 1.58 ms 0.94 [0.88, 1.15]

All 80 runs were valid, and every keep-up run kept up. A smaller tree makes walks cheaper, so writes speed up. Lookup p99 and keep-up update p99 are within noise. In production, main's 5-minute sweep would also stall a lane for 1.5–2.5 s; the replays end before it runs.

Tests

  • New unit tests cover:
    • the lane drain;
    • finding the parent after later splits;
    • leaving referenced leaves to the sweep;
    • split-born dead suffixes;
    • the sweep triggers;
    • flushes;
    • the maintenance thread, including stopping it when the indexer drops.
  • New randomized_reclamation_keeps_scores_exact: 32 seeds × 300 ops over two lanes, with drains and sweeps at random points. Every worker's score must equal its held prefix.
  • cargo test -p dynamo-kv-router --lib passes, with the CRTC tests repeated 10×. Clippy with -D warnings is clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved reclamation of unused index entries during background maintenance, idle periods, and flushes, helping prevent stale entries from lingering.
    • Strengthened cleanup behavior during concurrent updates while preserving accurate query results.

CRTC removals change coverage only, so a leaf whose last holder evicts it
stays linked until the 5-minute stale-leaf sweep, which runs on an event
lane. Under eviction churn most of the tree's memory can be dead leaves.

Reclaim them in two parts:

- Each node records parent_tail, the hash of the block before its edge.
  Its head never moves, so the parent is always the node whose edge ends
  with that block. A removal that kills a leaf resolves the parent through
  the root, an anchor or the evicting worker's lookup and queues it on the
  lane. The lane unlinks queued leaves when idle, at most 256 at a time and
  all of them before a flush, under one try-locked gate per parent.
  Split-born dead suffixes are queued by the splitting lane.
- The lane-scheduled CleanupStaleChildren task becomes a ThreadPoolIndexer
  maintenance thread. CRTC sweeps there once 1,024 nodes have died or 30 s
  have passed, walking without gates and unlinking each parent's dead
  children under one try-locked gate, deepest first.

Closes #16000.

Walkthrough

The CRTC indexer now queues and unlinks eligible holder-less leaves during lane activity and flushes. It also runs scheduled stale-leaf sweeps through a background-maintenance interface. Node state records the hash preceding each edge to support parent lookup.

Explanation

PR #16000 requires prompt, bounded reclamation and a five-minute backstop. The changes implement lane queues, 256-entry drains, anchor-root sweeping, and maintenance triggers at 1,024 deaths or 30 seconds. The issue also requires the live/8-plus-floor volume trigger, exact split-prefix sizing, capped leaf slack, time-averaged memory evidence, a one-hour RSS soak, and an anchor-reclaim test. The supplied diff summary reports none of those capacity changes or the anchor test, and reports only snapshot benchmarks rather than the required time-averaged and soak results.

Resolution

Implement the #16000 volume trigger and edge-capacity requirements, add the anchor-reclaim test, and provide the required time-averaged memory and one-hour RSS validation. Then verify the performance acceptance criteria with the specified benchmark method.

…down

Split-born dead leaves were queued without the lane's 4,096-entry bound,
so a lane that kept splitting without going idle could grow its queue
without limit. Both enqueue paths now share one bounded push.

KvIndexerInterface::shutdown now stops and joins the kv-maint thread, as
Drop already did, so an indexer kept after shutdown stops sweeping.

Re: CodeRabbit asking for final-code benchmarks (node.rs): the before/after numbers are in the Validation section. They come from the CRTC protocol: overloaded achieved_block_ops_per_sec is 1.17× main [1.15, 1.18], and keep-up query_service p50/p99 is 0.93× / 1.03×, over 20 fresh-process rounds. They were measured on a bench-instrumented prototype with the same algorithm and constants. The description lists the differences, and none of them touch the measured paths. The CRTC maintainer owns the benchmark decision, so no separate PeaBrane review is needed.

The idle drain unlinked one 256-entry chunk and then blocked waiting for
the next task, so after a burst of more than 256 deaths the rest stayed
queued until another task arrived or the sweep ran. The lane now keeps
draining in 256-entry chunks until its queue is empty or a task arrives.

Drop tests that duplicate other coverage or restate the implementation:
the single-leaf flush test (same path as
test_flush_unlinks_dead_children_under_live_prefix), the full-queue
arithmetic test, the shutdown Option check, and the negative half of the
maintenance-thread test (covered by the sweep-trigger unit test).
