Current scope: router error handling split out

Follow-up: #17621, based on #15857 (+100 / -15 lines across seven files).

Head: dc8ff775a805d84766ba1370957407aa21cb0c44. The core stack remains main → #15853 → #15854 → #15855 → #15857. All lib/llm/src/kv_router* changes and their decision-side pinned-target error mapping/regression coverage are moved to a separate follow-up based on #15857. The first branch still uses the configured router (including KV-aware routing when enabled); sibling worker/rank pinning and request-local cache isolation are unchanged. Until the follow-up lands, the narrow vanished-target dispatch race retains the existing router error classification rather than the new HTTP 503 remapping.

The reduced #15853 passed 51 targeted System One tests. Scoped pre-commit passed. Earlier live-model/SDK results below describe the pre-split combined tree; the follow-up restores that tree byte-for-byte, but those runs are not new validation of the reduced core alone.

Historical main rebase and local validation

Rebased onto main 4d407c8420cbbed33be237d2582345102753d191. Prerequisites #15849–#15852 are merged. Remaining order: main → #15853 → #15854 → #15855 → #15857; each child includes its immediate parent's current head. This PR head is 79e37696f0a0cc6054ddf4d09bb9bae15fb27840, targeting bis/decisions-d5-execution. All rewritten commits are signed; recovery refs retain the prior heads.

Integrated qualification at stack tip 84b82f444b66881186a0ccc8995d55e45430b60c passed locally with real Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B weights at revision c1899de289a04d12100db370d81485cdf75e47ca, SGLang 0.5.22, and an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell:

  • Independent native zero-decode score parity and scoring/chat coexistence: both committed GPU tests passed.
  • Both raw public contracts plus official OpenAI 3.26.0 and TypeSafe 0.7.2 evaluation: four checks passed; oversized candidate input was rejected before inference. The SDK lane's native case was deselected because the separate GPU campaign covers it.
  • Rust selections passed: 59 decision, 11 lifecycle, 264 discovery, 73 routing-host, 14 OpenAPI, and 68 metric tests. Selections can overlap and are not summed. Strict Clippy, formatting, and pre-commit passed.

The fresh extension SHA-256 is 24f1ae18af9f57f18f720bb639c5458d717474a58fcccaa4da48e1babf8e18ac. Native parity ran before the final XPU-container-only main refresh; complete Rust/Python/test trees and root dependency manifests/lockfile are verified byte-identical after it. Official SDK checks ran after the refresh. These are integrated-stack results, not a claim that every lower slice independently exposes HTTP. No new large-model, quality, performance/scaling, authenticated-gateway, XPU-video, or physical GPU-settlement qualification is claimed. New-head GitHub CI is separate from local results.

Earlier head-specific validation below remains historical.

Summary

  • Wire opt-in POST /v1/decisions and POST /v1/systemone through the shared coordinator, frontend CLI/configuration, and Python bindings.
  • Use the OpenAI Decisions contract on /v1/decisions and the Jev/System One contract on /v1/systemone; reject nvext and native-only request shapes before inference, independently of the global NVEXT setting.
  • Enforce body/contract limits and route-specific errors, request identifiers, version headers, and usage projection. Keep existing completion/chat routes available.
  • Add ten CPU mocker endpoint fixtures and reusable contract assertions covering typed choices, ordering, errors, disabled routes, overload, and admission recovery.
  • Remove the final temporary lint expectations now that the HTTP and discovery opt-in consumers exist.

Phase 1 scope

The integrated stack supports only OpenAI POST /v1/decisions and Jev/TypeSafe POST /v1/systemone. Every top-level nvext envelope is rejected, including {} and explicit "oai". Public SGLang-native Decisions request/response types, adapters, projection and selector support are removed. SGLang /generate scoring remains an internal execution primitive, not a third public contract. Optional native-format support is deferred to DEP #15960. This scope supersedes the earlier three-contract implementation description.

Stack

Dynamo review order: D1: mocker → D2: native scoring → D3: discovery → D4: admission → D5: execution → D6a: HTTP → D6b: OpenAPI → D7: qualification. Each PR targets its predecessor; merge from the base upward and update dependent bases as prerequisites land.

D6a of the Dynamo decision API stack. Base: bis/decisions-d5-execution. Minimal OpenAPI route mapping is included here; rich schemas are in D6b. Official SDK and independent native-runtime qualification fixtures follow in D7.

Related: umbrella DEP #15843 and its dependency plan.

Endpoints remain disabled unless explicitly enabled. This integration does not close physical GPU settlement, complete SDK-matrix, Decision Index, or performance qualification gates.

Validation

Current stack rebased onto main acef8afe0a5b6c7ae9acec3d1ad4fd76234efc5f, with every PR targeting its latest predecessor. Signed rebase commits supersede the earlier published heads.

Fresh integrated-stack validation and complete GPU pytest output ran at tip 876e2980df44ac3ec16d3079965e1c58039e5cd3: both committed native SGLang tests passed on stock 0.5.22/GB200 with pinned Qwen3-0.6B; four official OpenAI/TypeSafe client/wire cases passed separately against the live worker. The incompatible 43-choice Jev probe returned the new actionable HTTP 422 diagnostic. These are integrated-stack results, not a claim that lower slices expose public routes independently.

Final-source validation also passed 294 mocker tests, 51 System One tests, 52 frontend service tests, nine live CPU HTTP tests, focused routing/protocol/lifecycle/OpenAPI and Python regressions, strict LLM all-target Clippy without default features, formatting/pre-commit, and locked metadata. Documentation configuration and broken-link checks passed. Counts overlap; new-head remote CI is tracked separately. This does not qualify the 27B model, model quality, performance/scaling, or physical GPU cancellation settlement.

Historical validation before this main rebase

Rebased onto main 02da7f44861b65758b960770e0763e9faa8e4ca4. D3 and later use crates.io dynamo-decisions =0.1.0 with dynamo-protocols =8.2.0; obsolete Git dependency/source patches are removed. The prior unpublished-crate prerequisite is no longer applicable.

Validation below is integrated-stack evidence, not a claim that lower slices already expose public HTTP routes.

  • Locked Cargo metadata passed for the root, Python-binding and KVBM-binding workspaces; published decision-core tests: 40 passed.
  • Fresh Python binding build passed. Ten CPU HTTP/helper tests and ten manual-marker policy tests passed; malformed content types and empty questions are rejected before worker inference.
  • Nine wire/official synchronous SDK checks passed against real cached Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B revision 1d4bf0f2ff6012fd82039f2fa52739d0dd7c60c0, SGLang 0.5.19, and the final combined source 2f90adc5360cbdd5de6e5d78e9fb150cb5513595; independent-native parity was deselected.
  • Rust formatting and whitespace checks passed. A broader local Rust test rebuild hit disk exhaustion and is not counted as a passing test run; focused reruns and actual current-head remote CI remain separately tracked.

Only OpenAI /v1/decisions and Jev /v1/systemone are public decision contracts. No native SGLang wire format or nvext.format selector is supported. No new claim of independent numerical parity, Decision Index quality, full client-language coverage or physical GPU settlement is made.

Historical validation before the registry integration

The following records concern earlier source revisions and are not current-head CI evidence.

  • Final restacked tip 4fc7c6c79b0fa40e67fbf6710c0b83c5b3ad7cc1 rebuilt the Python extension with locked public dependencies and no local override; all ten HTTP integration tests and four official SDK/wire tests passed against that final extension on CPU services. Its runtime/fixture sources match the live-GPU-tested source.
  • The updated frontend stack passed 199 protocol/core tests, strict all-target Clippy and formatting; its published final tree matches the source used for the live SDK run. Dynamo pins the public frontend revision e2805e94675457ff445c261b2d12eed0d227a3b0, without machine-local dependency overrides.
  • Integrated Phase 1 source passed all ten CPU HTTP fixtures, 25 SGLang registration tests, and official-client/wire checks against the CPU mocker. Negative fixtures cover both routes and verify rejected requests do not reach workers. These are integrated-source results, not claims that every lower slice exposes HTTP.
  • Live Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B revision 1d4bf0f2ff6012fd82039f2fa52739d0dd7c60c0, SGLang 0.5.19: four wire/official synchronous Python SDK tests passed using OpenAI 3.26.0 and TypeSafe SDK 0.7.2. Same-worker native scoring comparison also passed. The independent-native-server fixture was deselected and was not requalified in this run.
  • Live GPU validation used the Phase 1 source before restacking. Final committed source equivalence and public-dependency build/CPU checks are recorded separately; historical three-contract runs do not qualify this revised scope.
  • These results do not complete async/JavaScript SDK coverage, Decision Index quality/coverage, performance/scaling, authenticated-gateway qualification, or physical GPU settlement. New-head CI is separate and is not claimed passing here.

Historical validation before the Phase 1 scope update

The following records describe earlier revisions, not current-head CI or a new qualification claim.

  • Focused route tests: two passed.
  • Strict cargo clippy -p dynamo-llm --all-targets -- -D warnings: passed.
  • All ten CPU tests collect independently; the bounded-retry regression passed. The retry helper lives with shared test utilities, not a later PR's fixture module.
  • Pinned Python formatting/import checks, Rust formatting, and whitespace checks: passed.
  • All temporary staging lint expectations are removed.
  • Final-stack extension rebuilt with cargo build --locked --manifest-path lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml, using the immutable public frontend Git dependency: passed. All ten CPU endpoint tests then passed against that rebuilt extension.

CPU endpoint tests are checked in here with their owning feature. The final-stack rebuilt-extension rerun is separate from earlier model validation; no new GPU campaign is implied by this extraction.

Implementation tracking: Part of #15961. This is a non-closing link to the decision-model delivery roadmap; the umbrella DEP remains open.

Walkthrough

The frontend can enable the System One typed-decisions API through configuration. The HTTP service registers System One and Decisions POST routes, handles their request dialects, and includes integration tests for route behavior, validation, and retries.

Changes

System One Decision API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and propagate System One enablement
components/src/dynamo/frontend/frontend_args.py, components/src/dynamo/frontend/main.py, lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/entrypoint.rs, lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_core.pyi, lib/llm/src/frontend_config.rs
The frontend and Python entrypoint accept the System One flag. FrontendApiConfig reads its environment default and carries the setting to the service.
Register routes and endpoint state
lib/llm/src/endpoint_type.rs, lib/llm/src/entrypoint/input/http.rs, lib/llm/src/discovery/watcher.rs, lib/llm/src/http/service.rs, lib/llm/src/http/service/openapi_docs.rs, lib/llm/src/http/service/service_v2.rs, lib/llm/src/http/service/systemone.rs
The service tracks System One availability and conditionally mounts the System One and Decisions routes. It adds the SGLang Generate discovery capability when System One is enabled. Route documentation supports a separate documentation path.
Handle System One and Decisions requests
lib/llm/src/http/service/systemone/http.rs
The new POST routes process requests with dialect-specific defaults, JSON media-type checks, request IDs, and response metrics.
Validate API behavior with integration tests
tests/frontend/test_systemone_mocker.py, tests/utils/decision_api.py
Integration tests exercise response contracts, validation, limits, and retry behavior. Shared helpers build request dialects and validate response values.

Explanation

The description is long and detailed. It explains the scope split and the stack order, and it lists validation results. It does not follow the repository template. It has no "Overview", "Key Changes", "Validation", or "Issues and Ongoing Work" headings in that form. It links DEP #15843 and #15961, which are non-closing. The "Closes #XXXX" line is absent, and the "I used Dynamo's /pr-checklist skill" checkbox is missing. The description also contains many stale or conflicting sections, including historical validation blocks for earlier heads and mixed base/main references. This makes it hard to tell what the current PR delivers and what was validated. The 'Summary' section covers the key changes, and the 'Validation' content is present but spread across several 'Historical' sections.

Resolution

Restructure the description to follow the repository template: Overview, Key Changes, Validation, and Issues and Ongoing Work. Add the "Closes #XXXX" line, or state why no issue is closed. Add the Pull Request Checklist item, and tick it only if the /pr-checklist skill was run. Remove or move the historical validation blocks for superseded heads so that the Validation section reflects only the current head. State the base branch and the current head once, not in several places. Clarify whether this PR is a stacked follow-up and what it changes relative to #15857.

Move the retry-helper test to a unit-marked module.

The function-local decision_api import violates the mandatory module-level import rule. The test also inherits integration and model(QWEN) even though it only uses monkeypatches and mocked responses. Keep pre_merge, gpu_0, and the timeout marker if needed, and classify the test as unit.

Adding unit alone is insufficient because the module-level integration and model(QWEN) markers still apply.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: Still present: append_route_docs still checks RouteDoc equality through HashSet::get, so a System One route with the same HTTP method and path as an existing route but a different documentation_path is not rejected before Axum merges the routers.
  • Original discussion: Still present: handle_http still parses the request body before checking Content-Type, so unsupported media types with malformed JSON can return parse errors instead of 415.
  • Original discussion: Still present: route collision detection uses full RouteDoc equality, including documentation_path, so a custom System One path can duplicate an existing POST route without being rejected before Axum merges and panics at startup.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the System One handler parses the request body before checking Content-Type, so malformed unsupported-media requests return parse errors instead of 415 and spend work on bodies that should be rejected immediately.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: System One custom path collisions are only rejected for /v1/decisions. append_route_docs compares the full RouteDoc, including documentation_path, so configuring DYN_HTTP_SVC_SYSTEMONE_PATH to an existing POST route such as /v1/chat/completions is not caught before Axum merges the routers and can panic during service startup.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: a custom DYN_HTTP_SVC_SYSTEMONE_PATH can overlap an existing POST route such as /v1/chat/completions. Because RouteDoc equality now includes documentation_path, append_route_docs does not reject that collision before the routers are merged, leaving service startup to panic in Axum when System One is enabled with the overlapping path.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: handle_http parses the request body before checking Content-Type, so an unsupported media type with malformed JSON returns the parse error instead of the route's 415 unsupported-media response. The check needs to happen before parse_request_with_options, using the route's default dialect for the error envelope.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: the System One/Decisions handler parses the body before validating Content-Type. A malformed request with an unsupported media type can return a parse error instead of the expected 415 unsupported media type response, and the pre-parse 415 path still needs to use the route's default dialect because no request dialect has been parsed yet.

The six runtime PRs have been rebased onto current main, updated with signed fixes, and retained as drafts.

All 18 existing inline findings now have published fix commits, fixed in <sha> replies, and resolved threads. The retry helper also runs in the CPU unit lane (8598dad729dc88e13062b38679f40ef585311c39).

Independent Opus 5.5 review identified additional issues. Corrections now enforce truthful opt-in mocker serialization, unify protocol dependencies, preserve cancellation attribution, add a discriminating prompt-token isolation test, and retain safe render diagnostics without logging request content. The dependency release prerequisite remains unresolved and is documented in #15851.

Local validation: 35 focused Rust tests, 43 mocker unit tests, strict all-target Clippy, configured hooks, 10 live HTTP/unit checks, and four official OpenAI 3.26.0/TypeSafe 0.7.2 checks passed. The live service used CPU mockers with the pinned Qwen tokenizer/template, not GPU model inference. Fresh GitHub CI is a separate gate.

Two additional pinned-frontend audit expectations remain unmet: Jev duplicate-key validation returns HTTP 400 invalid_json rather than HTTP 422 validation details, and unsupported OpenAI image input returns error.type="unsupported_capability" rather than the expected invalid_request_error. These checks are recorded as failures, not suppressed or claimed as complete compatibility.

#17064 added `shutdown_deadline_interrupts_handlers_and_response_bodies`
against a main where `track_inflight_inference` took the service state
directly. #15854 moved the middleware to `Arc<InferenceReadinessState>`
before #17064 merged, so the test no longer type-checks and every
`cargo clippy --all-targets` / `cargo test` on main fails to compile
`dynamo-llm`'s lib tests.

Construct the readiness state the way the router does (service state plus
an empty mounted-protocol map, which the test route does not use).

the shutdown-deadline test added by ai-dynamo#17064 stopped type-checking after
ai-dynamo#15854 changed the readiness middleware's extractor. The previous merge
took main while that build was broken, so the PR's rust-tests and
