CRTC nodes kept full-edge coverage as an `FxHashSet<WorkerWithDpRank>` and partial coverage as an `FxHashMap`. Every lookup cloned the first node's set and retained it against each later node's set. Every coverage write took the node's state write lock, so lookups parked behind writers that only added a worker to an edge. Coverage: - Each rank that stores into the tree gets a dense `u16` slot from the tree's `SlotRegistry` (`coverage.rs`). A node records full-edge coverage as one atomic bit per slot: 256 slots inline, higher slots in 256-slot chunks that are installed once and never move. - Partial coverage is a slot-sorted cutoff list in `CrtcNodeState` (`state.rs`), which replaces the shared `NodeState` in the CRTC. `RadixTree` keeps `NodeState`. - Lookups load the first node's bits into a `SlotSet`, intersect it with each later node's bits, and map slots back to ranks through a slot table loaded once per walk. Exact intersection: - The equal-size skip is removed, so every hop intersects. The skip treated equal-sized sets as equal. That overcounted after a head-first eviction, and also when a concurrent store promoted another rank between hops, so the walk read an equal-sized but different set. A race soak found it overcounting about 0.06% of lookups on `main`'s code (1,882 of 3.0M in a 10 s run). - Over slot words the intersection is a few word operations per hop, about the cost of the size check it replaces. - README and AGENTS.md drop the skip exception: lookups may undercount during races but never overcount. Locking change (authorized by the CRTC owner): - Promoting a slot to full coverage sets its bit under the shared shape gate, after validating the shape version, instead of under the state write lock. It takes the write lock only to delete the slot's stale cutoff, after the bit is set, and only when the node has cutoffs. `has_cutoffs` is republished whenever a state write guard is released. - Readers load bits under the state read lock, so the bits they see are consistent with the edge. Removals, splits, extensions, and sweeps, which clear, move, or demote bits, keep the exclusive gate and the state write lock, so they exclude every shared-gate promote. A demotion publishes the cutoff before it clears the bit. Slot lifecycle: - A rank gets the lowest free slot on its first store or anchor. `Removed` and `Cleared` never allocate, and `Cleared` keeps the slot. A store that finds every slot taken fails with `CapacityExhausted` instead of sharing one. - A sweeping worker removal unmaps the rank, waits for threads pinned before the unmap, sweeps the slot out of the reachable tree, and frees it through the epoch, so a reader holding the old table never sees it reused. A removal or clear that races another lane's removal of the same rank waits for that release. - Sweeps and clears walk under one pin, repinned every 64 nodes, and keep no visited set. The previous address-keyed set could skip a split suffix that reused the address of a node the sweep had already cleared and freed. - Recycled slots can keep stale bits on subtrees that removal had already unlinked. Split and repair lookup updates therefore move only entries that still name the replaced node (`redirect_arc_lookup_for_keys`), so a new owner's entries never land on stale bits. Dumps map each merged chain through one slot table and credit a rank below a parent only if it covers the parent's whole edge. Tests: - `coverage.rs`: concurrent bit flips in one word, racing chunk installs, lowest-slot allocation, release after pinned readers, and exhaustion. - `state.rs`: removal, extension, and promotion of cutoffs. - `tests.rs`: a differential walk against the hash-set walk, random event streams with slot recycling checked against a sequence-hash model, promote/split and drop/read races, sweep address reuse, recycled slots over unlinked subtrees, and removal/clear races on the slot release. Per-worker lookup maps, grouped removal, and probing lookup entries before the locked operation are unchanged here. Signed-off-by: PeaBrane <yanrpei@gmail.com>

The slot-walk differential test and the strict slot-recycling stream test each carried an inline xorshift64 closure. Draw from fastrand::Rng, already a dependency of the crate and used for seeded tests elsewhere, with the same seeds, operation mix and value ranges. Signed-off-by: PeaBrane <yanrpei@gmail.com>
…ndex CRTC nodes now keep a module-private `CrtcNodeState` instead of the `compressed_radix::NodeState` shared with `RadixTree`. It holds the same worker-keyed coverage, plus an `EdgeIndex` in place of the per-node `FxHashMap` from hash to edge position: - Edges of at most 16 blocks keep no index and scan from the tail. - Longer edges keep an open-addressing table of `u32` positions that reads keys back through the edge. - A split truncates the prefix's table in O(1), leaving tombstones, and rebuilds only when a table half the size would fit. Split coverage handling moves from `Node::split_at_locked` into `CrtcNodeState::split_off_suffix`, unchanged. One intentional difference: when a split prefix repeats a hash that also appears in the suffix, the prefix keeps its own last position of that hash instead of dropping the hash, matching what a scan finds. Ported from #15611 (PeaBrane), without the slot coverage of #15610. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: jthomson04 <jwillthomson19@gmail.com>

Closing along with the rest of the #15609 stack. The writer-side win from #15611 already landed on main via #16134, without this layer. Per-layer attribution showed no e2e gain from the dense rank slots and atomic coverage bitsets at 4 event threads; they only helped the overloaded 64-thread case. The indexer memory saving is about 2% (~43 MiB of ~1.8 GiB live heap). The one piece worth keeping is the fix for the equal-size-skip overcount, which main still has (L3's |
Status (2026-10-09). John Thomson is taking these over. Merge order: #15609 → #15610 → #15611. The per-PR end-to-end tables are in point 5 of the reviewer block below. Follow-ups: #16000 (dead-leaf memory retention) and #15614 (opt-in race soak, test-only). This layer is end-to-end neutral at the default 4 event threads. Its gains are the overload lookup tail and the fix for main's equal-size-skip overcount.
For reviewers
The stack-wide answers on the allocator, realistic end-to-end load, the page-size-1 limit and glibc results are at the top of #15611 (and #15609). In short:
This PR's own part is the lookup tail: overload lookups no longer queue behind coverage writers. It also removes the equal-size skip that overcounted on
main.End to end, per PR (default allocator; full table in point 5 at the top of #15611): at the default 4 event threads this PR shows no end-to-end gain on its own.
main's level after perf(kv-router): epoch-reclaimed CRTC child maps and borrowed reads #15609's 3.5% gain (7.55 vs 7.29 cores). Every build below the full stack is saturated there, though, so their CPU is not compared at equal work.main.Its gains appear under overload at high event-thread counts (below). The full stack's end-to-end gains, keeping up at page size 1 and about half the memory, arrive with #15611 on top of it.
Summary
Second of three PRs in the CRTC stack (#15609 → this PR → #15611), based on
main, with no allocator change. #15614 is a separate test-only draft with the race soak.CRTC nodes kept full-edge coverage as an
FxHashSetof ranks, every lookup cloned and intersected those sets, and every coverage write took the node's state write lock, so lookups parked behind writers that only added a rank to an edge.SlotRegistry(coverage.rs); full-edge coverage is one atomic bit per slot (256 inline, then 256-slot chunks installed once). Lookups intersect slot words and map slots back to ranks through one slot table per walk.main's code. Word intersection costs about the same as the size check.Writer bookkeeping (per-worker lookup maps, grouped removal, lookup validation inside locked operations) is #15611. The commit message has the full design notes.
