processing to requests routed to decode without a remote KV handoff; do not
claim that failures during an in-flight KV load trigger local recomputation.
Document in-flight KV load failures separately, consistent with vLLM 0.29.0
behavior.

Previously reported defects still present:
- Original discussion: The README still claims a decode worker processes the full request locally after a prefill failure and that such failures do not cause request failures. The configured NIXL transfer settings do not set
kv_load_failure_policy: "recompute"; vLLM 0.29 defaults that policy tofail, so an in-flight remote KV load failure fails the request rather than recomputing locally. - Original discussion: The README still states that a decode worker processes the full request locally after a prefill worker fails, without qualifying requests already in an in-flight remote KV handoff as the existing discussion requested.
- Original discussion: The changed resilience documentation still states that any prefill-worker failure makes decode process the full request locally. Requests already performing a remote NIXL KV load can fail rather than recompute locally; qualify the claim to requests routed directly to decode without a handoff and document the in-flight-load case.
- Original discussion: The resilience claim remains too broad: vLLM 0.29.0 defaults
kv_load_failure_policytofail, so a request whose decode stage has already begun loading KV from the failed prefill worker fails rather than being recomputed locally. Limit the statement to requests rerouted before a remote handoff, and document the in-flight load behavior separately.

Not approving yet. The PR workflow has not run on a6597bb, and I found one P3.
I read all 25 files at a6597bb and found no defect in the new role assignments. This fork needs a maintainer to comment /ok to test before the PR workflow can start. Its vLLM gpu_2 lane runs test_self_benchmark_disagg_serves_after_bench, the only pre-merge GPU test that uses the new roles. For my approval, this head or the next one needs that workflow to pass, and the P3 needs a fix or a reply.
[P3] tests/fault_tolerance/deploy/README.md:408: the line names kv_consumer, but the vLLM manifest that these tests deploy still sets kv_both. Please remove the role name, or move the line to the follow-up PR.
Note for the planner owners: if the decode arguments have no --kv-transfer-config, a profiler-built vLLM disagg DGD now gives the decode worker a kv_consumer NIXL configuration (components/src/dynamo/profiler/utils/config_modifiers/vllm.py:105). On main, that worker gets none, and vLLM 0.29.0 then turns off the KV transfer for the request (vllm/v1/engine/core.py:474). After this PR, these deployments move KV over NIXL.
Measured results for the role changes, base a76e12e and head a6597bb.

I made five mutants (copies of the head with one deliberate change to the new role logic). Each mutant fails at least one test:
- Swapped roles in the
--connectorhint,args.py:634-635. - A hint that ignores the role,
args.py:584. - Swapped profiler defaults,
vllm.py:47-48. - The old profiler default for prefill only,
vllm.py:105. - A profiler default that replaces an explicit configuration,
vllm.py:105.
In vLLM 0.29.0, kv_both with NixlConnector still works and logs a deprecation warning (nixl/connector.py:93). Dynamo accepts a user configuration with kv_both and logs no warning. The operator has no role logic, and the role string goes unchanged into the ray start command.

@dmitry-tokarev-nv Thanks for the review. I've applied your review in e052b45. Could you approve it for full CI so the vLLM GPU test can run? |

Approving at 57166de.
No findings are open. e052b458db fixes my P3 on tests/fault_tolerance/deploy/README.md:408 with one of the two changes that I asked for.
The main evidence is in a job that did not run on any head of this PR: the vLLM gpu_2 lane of the PR workflow, with test_self_benchmark_disagg_serves_after_bench. That test starts a prefill worker and a decode worker with the new NIXL roles.
Measured on base d2381f9 and head 57166de.

A copy of the head with swapped roles in args.py:634-635 fails 2 tests. A copy with swapped profiler defaults in vllm.py:47-48 fails 1 test. A copy with swapped roles in disagg.sh shows the wrong role on both engines.
Since a6597bb, this PR changed one README line. I rebuilt the merge 57166de7ce from its two parents and got the same tree. The merge brought in #15195 from main, which touches no file in this PR. deploy/operator has the same tree as at a6597bb, where TestVLLMBackend_UpdateContainer passed.

Withdrawing my approval because new commits landed after it. I will review the new commits before I approve again.

Approving at c4a0e39.
No findings are open. c4a0e3933c fixes the mypy error at components/src/dynamo/vllm/args.py:636. It gives the same --connector migration hint as 57166de for every disaggregation mode.
When I posted this review, the PR workflow run on this head was still running. Its vllm-runtime / 2-GPU Test cuda13.0, amd64 job runs test_self_benchmark_disagg_serves_after_bench. That test passed on 57166de in the same job.

A copy of c4a0e39 with kv_consumer at args.py:634 fails test_connector_nixl_migration_hint_uses_disaggregation_role[prefill-kv_producer]. A merge with main at 13cbb76 has no conflicts. It gives the same mypy result as c4a0e39, and 164 tests pass. The local image has no plotly, so every tree also shows 3 import errors in one planner file.
