Summary

Adds real SGLang frontend/worker image upgrades under continuous HTTP traffic, extending the static component matrix in #14460. This is a stacked draft: merge #14460 first, then rebase this branch onto main. The incremental implementation starts after 979a9f0f4c; until the dependency merges, this PR also contains its commits.

Eight sequential paths cover embedding and aggregated chat from 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 to the candidate, with both frontend-first and worker-first order. A separate client Pod talks directly to the stable frontend Service, so frontend replacement does not invalidate a test-only port-forward. Client requests have no retries; failures and incomplete streams remain visible.

The candidate operator stays fixed. Each path uses two one-GPU workers, two CPU frontends, Deployment mode, maxSurge=0/maxUnavailable=1, and a two-GPU namespace quota. Assertions include target images/new Pod UIDs, observed Ready overlap, request-counter activity on both worker revisions, zero restarts, and successful request contracts before/during/after both image patches. Terminating Pods still count toward the observed resource budget. Active inference canaries are disabled to keep request counters attributable to test traffic; normal Kubernetes readiness/liveness probes remain.

The reusable/manual workflow creates its own vCluster and has a separate always-run cleanup job. PR execution honors the existing deploy-test enablement gate and contributes to dynamo-status-check; nightly reuses the same suite. Reports retain raw HTTP/SSE responses, Pod/image observations, sampled worker metrics/logs and stage results. This does not test operator-binary upgrades, Grove, ingress weights, PD, or KV routing. The derived-stop test remains in the static suite because greedy prefixes can differ across engine versions.

Validation

  • 18 compatibility harness unit tests passed in normal Python and python -O.
  • 3 rollout manifest/image-patch unit tests passed with pytest.
  • All 8 Kubernetes E2E parameters collected successfully.
  • Black, isort, changed-file Python lint, diff whitespace checks and actionlint passed (existing custom runner-label and constant-false diagnostics excluded).
  • New paths resolve to existing CODEOWNERS entries.
  • GPU Kubernetes execution has not been performed locally; no compatible GPU cluster is available in this environment. This PR remains draft pending live validation. A skipped PR deploy lane is not evidence of compatibility.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added cross-version compatibility validation for frontend and worker releases, including embedding, chat, and streaming scenarios.
    • Added Kubernetes rolling-upgrade validation for frontend and worker deployments under continuous traffic.
    • Added compatibility reporting, diagnostics, rollout monitoring, and cleanup evidence.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for compatibility matrices, local testing, CI artifacts, and rolling-upgrade scenarios.
  • Tests

    • Expanded automated coverage for response contracts, image updates, rollout behavior, resource limits, and failure handling.

The wrapper ignores its timeout argument and always gives command a 120-second subprocess timeout. Calls that deliberately pass timeout=330 alongside Kubernetes waits/deletes of 180-300 seconds are therefore killed at 120 seconds, making slow rollout teardown fail before Kubernetes' requested timeout.

🤖 AI Fix

Pass the function's timeout parameter to command instead of the hard-coded 120.

Confirmed. The concrete fix is one line:

 async def kubectl(namespace, *args, timeout=120):
     return await asyncio.to_thread(
-        command, "kubectl", "--request-timeout=30s", "-n", namespace, *args, timeout=120
+        command, "kubectl", "--request-timeout=30s", "-n", namespace, *args, timeout=timeout
     )

The distinction matters: --request-timeout=30s bounds an individual Kubernetes API request, while command(..., timeout=...) bounds the complete subprocess. As written, the explicit 330/210-second budgets at the Pod wait and foreground delete sites are all silently reduced to 120 seconds. A focused async unit test can mock command, call await kubectl("ns", "get", "pods", timeout=330), and assert the mock received timeout=330; also cover the default 120 path.

For frontend-only and core-only PRs, this job's condition is true, but required prerequisites are skipped: operator does not run for either path, and sglang-copy-to-acr also does not run for frontend-only changes. GitHub skips jobs whose required needs were skipped, so the new rolling-upgrade test never runs for those claimed change classes.

🤖 AI Fix

Align the rolling job's prerequisites and gating so operator and both candidate image-copy jobs run successfully for every change class that enables this job.

Confirmed. The current truth table is:

change class operator sglang-copy frontend-copy rolling job
sglang-only    runs       runs          runs            runs
core-only      SKIPS      runs          runs            SKIPS
frontend-only  SKIPS      SKIPS         runs            SKIPS

Adding always() only to the downstream job is not sufficient: it would allow evaluation after skipped needs, but the required image outputs would still be empty. The minimal, build-heavy correction is to add core and frontend to the operator condition and frontend to sglang-copy-to-acr (the underlying sglang-build already includes frontend). A cleaner correction is a dedicated image-resolution job that returns, for each of operator/frontend/worker, either the newly built tag or an explicitly pinned reusable candidate tag; then this job depends on that single complete contract. Either way, please add a small condition truth-table check for SGLang-only, core-only, and frontend-only changes and assert that all three tags are non-empty before invoking the reusable workflow.

Add the VRAM profiling markers.

This test loads an SGLang model on two GPUs but carries no @pytest.mark.profiled_vram_gib(N) marker and no @pytest.mark.requested_sglang_kv_tokens(...) marker. The parallel scheduler needs both to size the test against the runner VRAM tiers.

Profile the test with tests/utils/profile_pytest.py and add the resulting markers. See tests/README.md for the SGLang invocation.

As per coding guidelines: "If a test loads a model but does not carry a @pytest.mark.profiled_vram_gib(N) marker (plus the framework-specific KV marker — requested_vllm_kv_cache_bytes, requested_sglang_kv_tokens, or requested_trtllm_kv_tokens), ask the author to profile the test with tests/utils/profile_pytest.py and add the resulting markers."

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude the model snapshot directory from the artifact.

runner.py line 453 downloads weights to <output>/models/<scenario>/. The globs n2-results/*/embedding/* and n2-results/*/chat/* also match n2-results/models/embedding/* and n2-results/models/chat/*. The upload therefore includes the full Qwen model snapshots, which adds gigabytes per run and contradicts scripts/compatibility/README.md line 106 ("model weights are excluded").

Add exclusion patterns, or download the snapshots outside the results directory.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔴 Critical | ⚡ Quick win

kubectl discards its timeout argument.

The helper declares timeout=120 as a parameter but passes the literal timeout=120 to command. Every caller-supplied value is ignored, so all kubectl invocations are capped at 120 seconds.

Three call sites depend on a larger budget and now break:

  • Line 399-406 waits for the client Pod with --timeout=300s and timeout=330. The subprocess is killed at 120s. A normal image pull for the client Pod exceeds that, so the test fails before any traffic starts.
  • Line 507-517 deletes the DynamoGraphDeployment with --cascade=foreground --timeout=300s and timeout=330. The subprocess is killed at 120s, so foreground deletion is abandoned.
  • Line 519-529 waits for GPU Pods to disappear with --timeout=180s and timeout=210, also killed at 120s.

Abandoned GPU Pods keep holding the two-GPU quota, so the next parameterized path cannot schedule its workers.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Prevent client cleanup from masking the test failure.

If an earlier check or TimeoutError fails, finally still awaits stop_client(). Two of them already have accurate line threads (timeout forwarding and workflow prerequisites), so I am adding concrete fixes to those threads instead of duplicating them; the four additional findings are inline below. No tests were run for this review, but I inspected the live Actions evidence: the rolling job collected eight cases and skipped all eight.

[P1] This marker makes the new job green without executing any of the eight rollout cases. The repository collection hook auto-skips every framework-marked item when that framework module is absent unless the item is also marked framework_agnostic. In the actual rolling-upgrade run, the deploy image did not contain the sglang import: job 102002449732 collected 8 items, reported SKIPPED [8] ... sglang is not installed, finished in 0.10 s, and exited 0. That means no DGD, traffic client, rollout, request-continuity check, or two-GPU assertion ran.

The minimal correctness fix is:

 @pytest.mark.sglang
+@pytest.mark.framework_agnostic
 @pytest.mark.core

sglang should remain because it selects the correct CI lane; framework_agnostic only opts this orchestration test out of import-based skipping. I would also make the reusable workflow reject zero executed cases (for example, emit JUnit and assert that the eight parameterized cases are not all skipped), so a future marker/image mismatch cannot silently recreate a green no-op. Confirmed by execution off the cluster, and the green check on this head agrees with you. The sglang marker without framework_agnostic turns all eight cases into skips, and the job still exits 0.

Reproduced locally, mutated both ways, with two controls

Run on head 598b005, in an environment where sglang is absent, which is the same condition as the deploy image:

$ pytest tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py -m k8s --collect-only -q
8 tests collected in 0.04s

$ pytest tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py -m k8s -q -rs
ssssssss                                                                 [100%]
SKIPPED [8] tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:141: sglang is not installed
8 skipped in 0.03s

Selection is not the problem. -m k8s picks all eight. The hook at tests/conftest.py:679-685 adds the skip.

Mutation, one line, your proposed fix:

tree subject, -m k8s control A, tests/basic/test_cuda_version_consistency.py -m sglang control B, tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_unit.py
head as posted 8 skipped, sglang is not installed 1 skipped 3 passed
plus @pytest.mark.framework_agnostic 8 failed inside the test body 1 skipped 3 passed
reverted 8 skipped, sglang is not installed 1 skipped 3 passed

The eight failures after the mutation are ContractError: Pass --frontend-image and --image with candidate images, raised at scripts/compatibility/runner.py:48. That is line 156 of the test, so the body did run. Control A already carries framework_agnostic and control B carries no framework marker, and neither moved. The revert is byte-exact: git diff -- tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py | wc -c returned 0.

The live check confirms it in CI. SGLang N-2 rolling upgrade / upgrade is SUCCESS on this head, and it is the same job you cited, 102002449732.

I agree with P1, and I agree that the reusable workflow must reject a run with zero executed cases. A green job that runs nothing is the failure mode this suite exists to prevent.

[P2] overlap is sampled state, not durable rollout evidence, so this can fail a correct fixed-capacity rollout. The generated DGD asks for:

replicas: 2
podTemplate:
  metadata:
    annotations:
      nvidia.com/deployment-rolling-update-max-surge: "0"
      nvidia.com/deployment-rolling-update-max-unavailable: "1"

With that policy the valid sequence can be: (1) old A/B Ready; (2) A is removed and new C starts; (3) C becomes Ready while B is Ready; (4) the controller immediately consumes that availability and marks B terminating. If steps 3-4 occur between two polls, the next pod_record deliberately reports B as ready=False because it has a deletionTimestamp, so this expression never sees both generations. The chance is amplified because observe() lists Pods and then fetches up to 2,000 log lines from every Ready Pod; the loop subsequently scrapes metrics, reads the client summary, and sleeps 2 seconds.

Please start a Pod watch from the resourceVersion of the pre-patch list, before update_component_images, and retain per-UID transition history. The core shape should be:

before, resource_version = await list_pods_with_resource_version()
tracker = OverlapTracker(old_uids, before)
async with pod_watch(resource_version=resource_version) as events:
    await deployment.update_component_images({role: candidates[role]}, version)
    async for event in events:
        tracker.apply(event)
        if converged(tracker.pods, role, candidates[role], old_uids):
            break
check(tracker.ready_overlap_seen, ...)

tracker.apply should latch true when a new-generation Ready/non-terminating event arrives while any old UID is last-known Ready/non-terminating. Keep log capture outside that event-consumption path. A focused unit sequence where new Ready and old terminating happen within one current polling interval would make this deterministic.

[P2] The outer teardown has the same exception-replacement problem as the inner stop_client() finally: any logs/delete timeout here becomes the reported test error, replacing the request, overlap, counter, or rollout failure that triggered cleanup. Because the deletes are sequential and unguarded, the first cleanup error also prevents the remaining resources from being released. The ignored caller timeout above makes this especially likely for the 300-second foreground DGD deletion.

Please preserve the active exception and run every cleanup step best-effort. One compact pattern is:

cleanup_errors = []

async def best_effort(label, operation):
    try:
        return await operation()
    except Exception as error:
        cleanup_errors.append(RuntimeError(f"{label}: {error}"))
        return None

# Use best_effort for inner stop_client and each outer logs/delete call.
primary_failure = sys.exc_info()[0] is not None
...
(output / "cleanup-errors.txt").write_text(
    "\n".join(str(error) for error in cleanup_errors)
)
if cleanup_errors and not primary_failure:
    raise ExceptionGroup("rolling-upgrade cleanup failed", cleanup_errors)

Do not catch BaseException, so cancellation still propagates. Please cover both orders: a primary ContractError followed by a delete timeout must still report ContractError and record cleanup diagnostics; a cleanup error after a successful body must fail the case after all cleanup operations have run.

[P3] This init container is attached to both Frontend and decode, but the frontend command is only python3 -m dynamo.frontend --http-port 8000 and never reads /model. Each test path therefore performs two initial and two replacement frontend snapshot downloads. Across 2 ages × 2 scenarios × 2 rollout orders, that is 32 unnecessary model downloads, plus emptyDir/storage pressure and Hugging Face/rate-limit exposure.

Please make the model dependency worker-only. The Python construction can stay small by building pod_spec before appending the component:

pod_spec = {"containers": [container]}
if kind == "worker":
    container["resources"] = {
        "requests": {"nvidia.com/gpu": "1"},
        "limits": {"nvidia.com/gpu": "1"},
    }
    container["volumeMounts"] = [{"name": "model", "mountPath": "/model"}]
    pod_spec.update(
        initContainers=[{
            "name": "model",
            "image": client_image,
            "command": ["python3", "-c", download],
            "envFrom": [{"secretRef": {"name": "hf-token-secret"}}],
            "volumeMounts": [{"name": "model", "mountPath": "/model"}],
        }],
        volumes=[{"name": "model", "emptyDir": {}}],
    )

Then use "spec": pod_spec. The offline model environment variables can move into the same worker branch; request-plane variables stay common. Please add negative frontend assertions (no initContainers/model volume/model mount) while retaining the positive worker snapshot assertions.

Review of the fixed-capacity N-2 rolling upgrade suite

Not approved. One new P1, one new P3, and the P1 that @sttts already raised is still open.

I verified the parts that do not need a cluster. The eight Kubernetes cases are still skipped in CI, so nothing in this suite has executed against a real rollout yet, and the two blocking items below are both things that first run would hit.

What I checked, and what I could not

Head at review time: 598b0052e35d4689e9ab8fe4308b00a2d1034507. Merge base with main: 946accea5edfd778f5120a3096b082e54e5bce2b.

Verified by running it:

  1. The compatibility harness passes. python -m unittest discover -s scripts/compatibility gives Ran 18 tests ... OK in normal mode and under -O, and runner.py --plan resolves the window to 1.4.2 and 1.3.1. That matches the Validation section.
  2. tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_unit.py collects 3 of 3 under the lane expression pre_merge and not parallel and not defaulted and not (vllm or sglang or trtllm) and (gpu_0) from .github/workflows/dynamo-pipeline.yml:238, and all 3 pass. The existing tests/deploy/test_dgd_utils.py collects 2 under the same expression, so that lane is real.
  3. pytest scripts/compatibility/ --collect-only collects all 18 without an import error, so the flat from rolling_client import ... and the scripts.compatibility.* imports coexist.
  4. The eight Kubernetes cases select correctly under -m k8s and then skip. See the thread on line 143.

Interaction with main since the merge base: main gained 276 commits, 12 of which touch a file in this diff. Only tests/deploy/dgd_utils.py is a shared file that this PR extends; the other touched files are .github/filters.yaml, .github/workflows/pr.yaml and .github/workflows/nightly-ci.yml, where the PR adds new blocks and edits no existing line that moved. The two commits that changed dgd_utils.py are #14246, which wrapped some kr8s and custom-object calls in vCluster retries, and #9848, which shortened worker service names. Neither moved a contract that update_component_images depends on. The new method does skip the retry wrapper, but so do four of the six _custom_api call sites already on the file, so that is the existing pattern rather than a regression.

Not verified: anything that needs a Kubernetes cluster with GPUs. I had none, so the rollout itself, the request-counter evidence and the resource budget remain unexercised by me as well as by CI.

The CodeRabbit comment on .github/workflows/cross-version-compatibility.yml:52 is wrong and I replied on that thread. Its comment on markers for scripts/compatibility/test_rolling.py is also moot: those eight cases run through .github/workflows/compatibility-contract-tests.yml, which uses unittest, not marker selection.

[P1] The worker sets DYN_SYSTEM_PORT to 8081, but the operator probes port 9090. tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:86. The pod template env wins the merge, so the status server moves while every readiness, liveness and startup probe still targets the named port system. The worker never reports Ready. Please drop this override and move the metric scrape and system_port to 9090.

Rendered manifest, plus the operator lines that fix the probe port

The manifest builder gives both components 8081. Rendered on this head with the PR's own function:

$ python - <<'PY'
from tests.deploy.test_n2_rolling_upgrade import manifest
...
PY
Frontend type= frontend replicas= 2
    {'name': 'DYN_SYSTEM_PORT', 'value': '8081'}
    {'name': 'DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED', 'value': 'false'}
    ports declared in manifest: NONE
    probes declared in manifest: NONE
decode type= worker replicas= 2
    {'name': 'DYN_SYSTEM_PORT', 'value': '8081'}
    {'name': 'DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED', 'value': 'false'}
    ports declared in manifest: NONE
    probes declared in manifest: NONE

The manifest declares no ports and no probes, so the operator supplies both.

operator source what it fixes
deploy/operator/internal/consts/consts.go:20-21 DynamoSystemPort = 9090, DynamoSystemPortName = "system"
deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/component_worker.go:33-38 worker container port system is 9090
deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/component_worker.go:50,65,77 liveness, readiness and startup all use intstr.FromString(commonconsts.DynamoSystemPortName)
deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/backend_sglang.go:41-49 probes are removed only when numberOfNodes > 1; this DGD is single node, so they stay

Nothing in the operator reads DYN_SYSTEM_PORT to move a port or a probe. The only non-test hits are the two places that write it, component_worker.go:95 and component_planner.go:85.

The pod template env wins. deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/graph.go:1896 runs base.Env = MergeEnvs(baseEnv, user.Env), and MergeEnvs at graph.go:719-741 lets the second argument overwrite the first. The repository pins that direction for a worker in TestGenerateBasePodSpec_WorkerPreservesHealthCheckOverride (deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/graph_test.go:6607), which asserts that a pod template DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED survives the operator default. So DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED=false on line 88 does work, and 8081 wins for the same reason.

Result: the status server binds 8081, the three probes get a closed 9090, the startup probe fails for its full 720 attempts, the pod stays not Ready, and ManagedDeployment(readiness_timeout=1800) at line 343 gives up. converged() also requires p["ready"].

Control: tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:86 is the only pod template under tests/ that sets this variable. The other 36 uses set it for a local process, where no Kubernetes probe exists. The repository Kubernetes example uses "9090", at docs/fern/pages/cli/operations/lora-adapters.md:111-112.

Not verified end to end. No Kubernetes cluster with GPUs was available to me, so this comes from the operator source and the repository test above, not from a live rollout.

Re-checked at the live head 598b005, and again after I merged the base branch tip ca94b0c into it. The defect is still live. The port is not consistent, and the manifest still declares no probes.

Re-rendered on the live head, and the operator constants compared at both refs

The manifest builder still gives both components 8081, and still declares no ports and no probes:

Frontend   type=frontend  replicas=2
    DYN_SYSTEM_PORT      = '8081'
    DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED = 'false'
    ports in manifest    = NONE
    probes in manifest   = NONE
decode     type=worker    replicas=2
    DYN_SYSTEM_PORT      = '8081'
    DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED = 'false'
    ports in manifest    = NONE
    probes in manifest   = NONE

The operator side did not move either. DynamoSystemPort = 9090 and DynamoSystemPortName = "system" read the same at deploy/operator/internal/consts/consts.go:20-21 on this head and at the base branch tip ca94b0c. All three probes still take intstr.FromString(commonconsts.DynamoSystemPortName) at deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/component_worker.go:50, :65 and :77. The runtime gate on line 30 only selects the value of DYN_HEALTH_CHECK_ENABLED. It does not remove a probe and it does not move a port.

The controls hold. tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:86 is still the only line under tests/ that sets this variable as a Kubernetes pod-template entry: grep -rn '{"name": "DYN_SYSTEM_PORT"' tests/ returns that line and nothing else. Every other hit sets a process environment variable, where no Kubernetes probe exists. The repository Kubernetes example still uses "9090", at docs/fern/pages/cli/operations/lora-adapters.md:111-112, and DeploymentSpec still defaults system_port=9090 at tests/deploy/dgd_utils.py:486.

Still not verified end to end. No Kubernetes cluster with GPUs was available to me.

[P3] The old images are chosen by position in the matrix() result, not by label. tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:167. If matrix() reorders its pairs or gains a third age, this line still returns two images and the run upgrades from the wrong release with no error. Please select each pair by its name field.

The mapping today, and the two ways it can move

matrix() at scripts/compatibility/runner.py:25-37 returns a list whose first field is a label. Measured on this head with the workspace version at 1.5.0:

index label frontend worker
0 candidate candidate candidate
1 old-frontend-1 1.4.2 candidate
2 old-worker-1 candidate 1.4.2
3 old-frontend-2 1.3.1 candidate
4 old-worker-2 candidate 1.3.1

Line 167 reads pairs[2 * age - 1][1] and pairs[2 * age][2], which lands on the right images for both ages today. The label is never read, so a reordering inside matrix() produces a different version pair and the assertions still pass.

The version source can also go stale. Line 163-166 reads the workspace version from Cargo.toml and asks the catalog for the two previous minors. scripts/compatibility/releases.json holds only 1.3 and 1.4. When the workspace version becomes 1.6.0, matrix() raises a bare KeyError for 1.5. That failure is loud, but it lands late: .github/workflows/compatibility-contract-tests.yml:5-13 triggers only on scripts/compatibility/**, and a version bump does not touch that path, so the cheap job does not catch it. The first signal is a GPU lane that has already built a vCluster and pulled images.

[P1] Raising this from P3, because the base branch of this stack replaced both the catalog and the version source. tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:166. After I merge the base tip into this head, all eight cases raise KeyError: '1.5'. Please call tests/deploy/n2_utils.version_matrix and read tests/deploy/n2/releases.json instead.

Measured on the head, then on the head with the base tip merged in

The base branch feat/n2-compatibility-ci was rewritten. Its earlier commits are no longer in its history: git merge-base --is-ancestor 979a9f0f ca94b0c returns false. Its tip deletes scripts/compatibility/ in full, including runner.py, releases.json and .github/workflows/compatibility-contract-tests.yml, and puts the same job in tests/deploy/n2_utils.py plus tests/deploy/n2/releases.json.

This head still resolves correctly on its own, because its Cargo.toml reads 1.5.0:

index label frontend worker
0 candidate candidate candidate
1 old-frontend-1 1.4.2 candidate
2 old-worker-1 candidate 1.4.2
3 old-frontend-2 1.3.1 candidate
4 old-worker-2 candidate 1.3.1

I then merged the base tip ca94b0c into this head. Cargo.toml becomes 1.6.0, and line 166 asks the catalog for 1.5, which is not in it:

$ pytest tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py -m k8s -n 0 \
    --frontend-image=reg/fe:9.9.9 --image=reg/wk:9.9.9
E           KeyError: '1.5'
scripts/compatibility/runner.py:31: KeyError

All eight cases fail that way. The run needed one mutation to get that far, because the eight cases skip first. I added @pytest.mark.framework_agnostic, checked that the file checksum changed from b484329367e1f... to 06420f811d27f..., then restored with git checkout HEAD -- <path> and confirmed the checksum returned to b484329367e1f... with an empty git status for the file.

Side by side, the two release-line mechanisms differ in three ways:

this head base tip ca94b0c
release line derived from Cargo.toml, no override DEFAULT_RELEASE_LINE = "1.5", with an N2_RELEASE_LINE override and a defaultless workflow input
missing catalog entry KeyError: '1.5' ValueError: N-2 release catalog for release line 1.6 is missing: 1.5
pair selection tuple index, pairs[2 * age - 1][1] VersionPair.name, .frontend, .worker

The third row also answers my original P3. The base tip already selects by name, so adopting version_matrix closes both points at once.

Follow-up review, round 2

Not approved. Three P1 items are open, and one of them is new.

The head has not moved since my last round. It is still 598b0052e35d4689e9ab8fe4308b00a2d1034507, with no force push on the timeline and no merge commits on the branch. What moved is the base of this stack. #14460 was rewritten, and its current tip no longer contains the commits this branch carries.

The three open P1 items, and where each one stands
item where state
The eight rollout cases never execute tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:143, raised by @sttts Still live. -m k8s collects 8 and skips 8 with sglang is not installed, and the job exits 0. Merging the base tip does not change that.
The worker sets the system port to 8081 while the operator probes 9090 tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:86 Still live. Re-rendered on this head. The operator constants read the same on this head and on the base tip.
scripts.compatibility is not importable inside any test image tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:27 New this round. Reproduced in a rebuilt image tree with two controls.

My earlier P3 about positional pair selection is now folded into the catalog reply on that thread, because the base tip already selects by name.

What the base branch did, and what its tip does to this branch

#14460 was force-pushed. Its earlier commits are gone from its history: git merge-base --is-ancestor 979a9f0f ca94b0c returns false. This branch still carries those five commits.

Of the 16 files this pull request touches, the base tip touches 5 of them:

file base-branch commits since the merge base
tests/deploy/dgd_utils.py 9
.github/workflows/pr.yaml 8
.github/filters.yaml 7
.github/workflows/nightly-ci.yml 6
.github/workflows/cross-version-compatibility.yml 4

The base tip also deletes scripts/compatibility/ in full and replaces it with tests/deploy/n2_utils.py and tests/deploy/n2/releases.json. I merged that tip into this head. The merge keeps scripts/compatibility/ on the "added by us" side, so the tree ends up with two parallel catalogs, and this branch calls the abandoned one. Details are on the catalog thread.

I ran the whole check on a merge I made myself, not on the branch. Please treat the merged result as a preview of the rebase the description promises.

Test selection, measured

The lane is SGLang N-2 rolling upgrade / upgrade, defined at .github/workflows/rolling-upgrade-compatibility.yml:44. It runs tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py with -m k8s -n 0 through $/.github/actions/dynamo-deploy-test, which runs pytest on the runner and not in a container.

$ pytest tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py --namespace=default -m k8s -n 0 -q -rs
ssssssss                                                                 [100%]
SKIPPED [8] tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:141: sglang is not installed
8 skipped in 0.04s

Zero of the eight cases execute in that lane. The three cases in tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_unit.py belong to the pre-merge CPU step, and that step errors at collection, so they execute in no lane either.

What I could not verify

I have no Kubernetes cluster with GPUs, so nothing here comes from a live rollout. The port finding comes from the rendered manifest and the operator source. The rollout, the traffic client and the overlap assertions are unverified by me.

[P1] The two new test modules import scripts.compatibility, which no test image ships. tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_upgrade.py:27. Both modules fail to import inside every runtime test image, so the three new unit cases never run anywhere. Please move the shared helpers under tests/, or add scripts/ to the runtime templates.

Reproduced in a rebuilt image tree, with a negative and a positive control

The runtime images bake /workspace at build time. The test step runs docker run --rm -w /workspace <image> and mounts only test-results, so /workspace is the baked tree and not the checkout (.github/actions/pytest/action.yml:173-182 and :311-315).

Those templates copy tests, but no template copies the top-level scripts/:

    E ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'scripts'
    no tests collected, 2 errors in 0.16s

(b) negative control, same tree plus scripts/ from this head
    11 tests collected in 0.04s

(c) positive control, remove exactly one shipped file, scripts/compatibility/runner.py
    E ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'scripts.compatibility.runner'
    no tests collected, 2 errors in 0.12s

Control (b) shows the missing directory is the only cause. Control (c) shows the rebuilt tree still reports a single missing file, so it does not pass blindly. runner.py restored to sha256 45ac811d498a45e5f9035006da7731ac402b2de66d45d0d84f530e11130ced0b, the same value as before the removal.

CI on this head reproduces the same two errors on all three frameworks:

job result
sglang-runtime / Test cuda13.0, amd64 764 passed, 4 skipped, 2 errors in 44.31s
vllm-runtime / Test cuda13.0, amd64 1536 passed, 9 skipped, 2 errors in 75.00s
trtllm-runtime / Test cuda13.1, amd64 293 passed, 3 skipped, 2 errors in 45.19s

tests/deploy/test_n2_rolling_unit.py carries pre_merge, gpu_0, unit and core, so the CPU pre-merge step is exactly where its three cases belong. That step is the one that errors, so those three cases run in no lane at all. The cheap harness job does not reach them either: .github/workflows/compatibility-contract-tests.yml:25 runs unittest discover -s scripts/compatibility, which does not collect anything under tests/.
