feat(llm): integrate structural tags with parsers v2 - #13903

WalkthroughThe change consolidates structural-tag configuration into one optional object. It propagates this object through Python and Rust bindings, adds reasoning-boundary handling, introduces parser v1 and v2 builders, and validates structured-output conflicts and parser aliases. ChangesStructural-tag configuration and preprocessing
Priority: ➖ Normal Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to This PR is a large but generally clean consolidation of structural-tag configuration. However, a programmatic caller that sets dyn_structural_tag=True will hit a worker construction failure, and the new documentation's example defaults are wrong and can cause a startup failure if copied literally. Both should be fixed before merge, but neither affects already-shipped default behavior or causes data loss or broad outage. Pre-merge checks |

With dynamo-parsers-v2 0.7.21, the test produces the tag that it expects:
v1: {"type":"structural_tag","format":{"type":"tag","begin":"","content":{"type":"any_tokens","exclude_tokens":["<tool_call>"]},"end":""}}
v2: {"type":"structural_tag","format":{"type":"tag","begin":"","content":{"type":"any_text","excludes":["<tool_call>","<function="]},"end":""}}
The merge 537d54b457. I did the merge again with git merge-tree --write-tree. 15 files conflicted. Four files that did not conflict also differ from the automatic result. These edits adopt the default-on policy of #13654, and each one holds:
v2.rs:76: an omittedstrictnow counts astrue.dynamo-parsers9.2.7 enforces the schema unlessstrictisfalse. Ifstrictis nottrue,dynamo-parsers-v20.7.21 does not enforce the schema. Outside its tests, it readsstrictonly inresolve_tool_schema. So this edit makes v2 match v1, and it changes nothing else.structural_tag_policy.py:17: the canonicalstructural_tagfield wins over the legacy fields. The three new test cases pass at this head. If I remove the new block, all three fail. A card with only legacy fields gives the same result in both.test_runtime_args.pyandtest_structural_tag_policy.py: new tests for the defaults above.
The merge also replaced the SGLang reasoning check in register.py with publish_sglang_structural_tag_reasoning_policy from main. That removed the only call of supports_require_reasoning. git grep finds the name only at _compat.py:428 and _compat.py:452.
The commit d321de8fb3 only reformats one assignment. The Python AST of runtime_args.py is the same before and after it. A one-string change gives a different AST.
The description and the defaults. The description says "--dyn-structural-tag enables structural tags on the worker" and "scope: auto (default) or always". At this head, StructuralTagConfig.scope defaults to "always" (runtime_args.py:32), and resolve_structural_tag_config turns structural tags on without any flag. The CI tests test_structural_tags_default_on_for_supported_parsers and test_structural_tag_flag_uses_default_config assert this, and both passed. The docs at this head already say this.
The deprecated flag. resolve_structural_tag_config logs deprecated; use --dyn-structural-tag instead for --dyn-enable-structural-tag and --no-dyn-enable-structural-tag. The CI test test_legacy_structural_tag_options_resolve_to_canonical_config asserts the warning, and it passed. This PR changed the opt-out examples on the same page to --dyn-structural-tag false, but not line 43. Also, 38 lines in 24 files under recipes/ still pass --dyn-enable-structural-tag. They still work, but each worker start logs the warning. A follow-up can change them.

ai-dynamo#13903 added the canonical structural_tag.reasoning_boundary setting and resolves it in the Rust preprocessor; the Python vLLM processor only warned that non-default values are unsupported. Resolve it the same way: backend leaves reasoning to the engine, auto follows the worker's published flag, and structural_tag models reasoning unless the backend already excludes it. Also drop a test-helper docstring that restated the code. Signed-off-by: Fengyu Li <fengyul@nvidia.com>
Overview:
This PR integrates parsers-v2 structural-tag builders into Dynamo, enabling structural-tag-guided tool calling and optional composition of tool calls with schema-constrained final responses.
It provides the Dynamo-side integration for the builders added in frontend-crates#189. Structural tags were already supported through v1. This PR adds the corresponding v2 path and consolidates configuration into a single CLI option.
Details:
--dyn-structural-tagenables structural tags on the worker. SetDYN_ENABLE_EXPERIMENTAL_PARSERS_V2=1in both worker and frontend processes to use the v2 builders. Parser families without a v2 builder continue to use v1 where available.Structural-tag applicability, request validation, reasoning-boundary resolution, and v1/v2 builder selection are centralized in the Rust preprocessor.
Configuration
The new
--dyn-structural-tagoption acts as both the feature switch and an optional JSON configuration. It becomes the primary public interface instead of exposing each new structural-tag setting as a separate CLI flag.Every field is optional. The full example above uses non-default settings and requires parsers v2, a supported tool-call parser, and a reasoning parser with the inference engine configured to activate guided decoding after reasoning.
scopeandschemapreserve the existing v1 policies:scope:auto(default) oralways; controls which tool-calling requests receive structural tags.schema:auto(default) orstrict; enforces argument schemas only for tools marked strict, or for every tool, respectively.The following options are specific to the v2 builders:
allow_tool_calls_with_structured_output(default:false): allows a request withtool_choice="auto", tools, andresponse_formatto choose between a tool call and a final response constrained by the response schema. When enabled, this composition applies independently ofscope.reasoning_boundary:auto(default),structural_tag, orbackend; selects whether the structural tag handles prompt-opened reasoning or the inference engine activates the grammar after reasoning.autofollows the backend’s advertised policy. Explicitbackendrequires a reasoning parser and assumes the inference engine is configured accordingly. Explicitstructural_tagis rejected if it conflicts with the backend’s advertised policy.exclude_special_tokens: controls model-specific reasoning and tool-call marker exclusions. Omitted ornulluses the model-family default. The v2 implementation uses string exclusions rather than tokenizer-specific token bans.tool_arguments_any_order(default:false): allows tool arguments to appear in an order different from their declaration. This weakens required-property and duplicate-key validation for tool arguments. Structured-output schemas are unaffected.Compatibility
The previous
--dyn-enable-structural-tag,--dyn-structural-tag-scope, and--dyn-structural-tag-schemaoptions remain accepted, but are hidden and deprecated.The new option cannot be combined with legacy scope/schema options or a conflicting legacy enablement setting. Configurations using only the legacy options continue to work.
Testing
The integration was tested end-to-end with
Qwen/Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-FP8,deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731, andzai-org/GLM-5.2-FP8, coveringtool_choice, parallel tool calls, and tool calls combined with structured output.Where should the reviewer start?
