Verdict: not approved at this head, because of one new P1. I read head 2f4ca565b67aee822679759221b6f24bf78c96d8. My approval names 3cf3b78956 and does not cover this head.
- [P1, new] On TensorRT-LLM with a guided decoder, the new default sends tags that XGrammar 0.1.32 cannot compile. See my comment on
runtime_args.py:296. - [P1, accepted, not fixed] The lookahead case in #15687. The merge did not change it.
- [P3, still open]
structural-tag.md:105-106still says "main's grammar". - [P3, still open]
runtime-configuration.mdx:300, which was line 282, still says that Rust "preserves native tags" for Kimi K3 named choices. - Open items from another reviewer, not graded: you resolved the three threads of peilii (
runtime_args.py:43,runtime_args.py:297andstructural_tag.rs:57) with follow-up proposals. peilii did not answer yet.
What I checked in your merge of `main`.
- Your merge equals
git merge-treeof3cf3b78956andf787ba7568in all files except the 8 that conflicted. In those 8 files, you kept your lines only where both sides changed the same lines. All other changes frommainare in. cargo metadata --lockedandcargo tree --lockedpass in the workspace, inlib/bindings/pythonand inlib/bindings/kvbm. The 9.2.7 checksum equals the crates.io index. As a control, your=9.2.7manifest with the 9.2.6 lock ofmainfails with exit 101.- From 9.2.6 to 9.2.7,
dynamo-parserschanges only the GLM-4.7 parser. It now returns a call to a tool that the request did not offer, where 9.2.6 dropped the call. Becausemainhas 9.2.6 now, this is the only effect of the bump. - This head merges with
main2f74d29832without a conflict.

Verdict: not approved at this head. I read head 2abaff168a9e77b3a2f9a2eb7e5f5e3a4a121df0. Your reply changes no code, and I did not decide on the trade-off yet, so the P1 stays open.
- [P1, still open] On TensorRT-LLM with a guided decoder, the default sends tags that XGrammar 0.1.32 cannot compile. See my thread on
runtime_args.py:296. Your workaround works: with--no-dyn-enable-structural-tag, this head sends the same guidance asmainin all 498 cells of my matrix. - [P3, new] Only the TensorRT-LLM validation table of the description shows this failure. The help text at
runtime_args.py:297-301,structural-tag.mdand the "Known compatibility limitation" paragraph do not name it. Only your thread reply tells TensorRT-LLM users with a guided decoder to pass the flag, and no issue in this repository tracks the case. If the default stays on, please name the case and the flag in these three places. Please also link a tracking issue here, as #15687 does for lookahead. - [P1, accepted, not fixed] The lookahead case in #15687.
- [P3, still open, new ask]
structural-tag.md:105-106and the description still say that the opt-out "does not restore main's grammar". In all 18 Kimi K3 named cells of my matrix, this head with the flag now sends the same tags asmain202d55232a. Please delete that clause. This replaces my earlier ask to write "the previous grammar". - [P3, withdrawn]
runtime-configuration.mdx:300says that Rust "preserves native tags" for Kimi K3 named choices. In my matrix, these tags now equal the tags ofmain, so the sentence is right. - Open items from another reviewer, not graded: you resolved the three threads of peilii (
runtime_args.py:43,runtime_args.py:297andstructural_tag.rs:57) with follow-up proposals. peilii did not answer yet.
The flag on a TensorRT-LLM worker, measured on this head and on main 202d552, with controls.
- In the TensorRT-LLM 1.3.0rc29 test image,
dynamo.trtllm.args.parse_argsfrom this head returnsdyn_enable_structural_tag=Falsefor--no-dyn-enable-structural-tagand forDYN_ENABLE_STRUCTURAL_TAG=false,FALSEor0. The flag wins over the variable in both directions. By the code attrtllm/workers/llm_worker.py:793-795, the worker then publishes modeoff. Controls: with neither set, this head returnsTrueandmainreturnsFalse. - I ran the matrix of my last review again with the mode that the worker publishes: 9 parsers, 6 tool shapes,
strictomitted, falseandtrue, and theauto, requiredand named choices, plus the request with two tools. Then I compiled each tag, JSON schema and regex with XGrammar 0.1.32.
| Cells | Default | With the flag | main |
|---|---|---|---|
qwen3_coder, nemotron_nano, deepseek_v3_2, deepseek_v4: 216 cells with one tool |
168 fail | 0 fail, no tag | 0 fail |
| The same 4 parsers, request with two tools | 8 of 8 fail | 0 fail, no tag | 0 fail |
kimi_k3: 54 cells |
54 fail | 18 fail, all named | 18 fail, all named |
kimi_k2: 54 cells |
18 fail, all required |
18 fail, all required |
18 fail, all required |
- With the flag, each cell gets the same tag, JSON schema and regex as on
main. The same cells fail, so the 36 Kimi failures do not come from this PR. - Controls: the default rows equal the rows of my last review at
2f4ca565b6(486 of 486). Thehermes,qwen25andinklingtags compile in 162 of 162 cells. On XGrammar 0.2.7, every cell compiles. The XGrammar 0.1.32 of the TensorRT-LLM image gives the same counts as XGrammar 0.1.32 on macOS. TensorRT-LLM 1.3.0rc29 compiles the tag withcompile_structural_tag(_torch/pyexecutor/grammar_matcher.py:111).
Where users learn of the limitation at this head.
- The help text says that the flag enables tags "when the configured parser and backend support it". It names neither TensorRT-LLM nor XGrammar 0.1.32.
structural-tag.md:87-100shows the flag fordynamo.trtllmunder "Preserve Previous Behavior". The only warning (structural-tag.md:201-208) is about schema constructs such as regex lookahead, not about a tool without arguments or withstrict: false.- Under "Known compatibility limitation", the description names only lookahead. Its TensorRT-LLM table shows
32/48; 16/50for Nemotron with XGrammar, but its opt-out examples show onlydynamo.vllmanddynamo.sglang. - The guided decoding entry in
tensorrt-llm-configuration.mdx:231-238does not mention structural tags. - #15687 covers lookahead only. NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM#19913 tracks the XGrammar upgrade.
What changed since my last review.
- The head moved from
2f4ca565b6to2abaff168a, your merge ofmain202d55232a. The merge equalsgit merge-treeof its two parents. In all 30 files, the lines that the PR adds and removes are the same as before. The description did not change. cargo tree --lockedpasses in the workspace, inlib/bindings/pythonand inlib/bindings/kvbm. As a control, the=9.2.7manifest with the 9.2.6 lock ofmainfails with exit 101.- CI at this head, read at 19:47Z: no check failed. 42 passed, 1 ended as neutral, 25 were skipped and 18 were still running.

Done added to docs explaining TRTLLM structural tags behavior remains unchanged. |
Signed-off-by: Indrajit Bhosale <iamindrajitb@gmail.com>
With structural tags on (the default since ai-dynamo#13654), the Python vLLM chat processor always built the tool-call tag with reasoning=False, i.e. for the output after the reasoning block. When the chat template ends the generation prompt inside an open reasoning block (DeepSeek V4.1 with thinking on, the default) and the vLLM worker does not hold the grammar back until reasoning ends, the grammar applies from the first generated token and excludes the end-of-reasoning marker. The model can then never close its reasoning, so a request with tools and tool_choice=auto runs to max_tokens with no tool call. The vLLM worker already publishes tool_call_structural_tag_excludes_reasoning and the Rust preprocessor already uses it (starts_in_reasoning). Do the same in the Python vLLM path: render first, and build the tag with reasoning=True when a reasoning parser runs for the request, does not find the end of reasoning in the prompt, and the worker does not exclude reasoning. Summary
This is the activation and integration half of a coordinated change addressing
two tool-calling correctness problems:
Kimi K3 needed stronger model-native guidance. The companion
frontend-crates#196
hardens the K3 XTML grammar used after an automatic call begins.
Supported models were not receiving structural guidance by default.
Dynamo previously defaulted structural tags to disabled with conditional
autoactivation. Consequently, ordinarytool_choice="auto"requests withomitted
strictremained unconstrained even when the configured parser hada validated structural-tag builder.
This PR enables structural guidance by default for supported parsers, aligns
the Rust and Python frontend policies, and retains fallback paths for missing
builders and builder failures.
Known compatibility limitation: backend grammar compilation errors do not
trigger those fallbacks. Valid schemas containing unsupported constructs, such
as regex lookahead, can therefore fail requests that main serves. We accept
this limitation while tracking automatic compatibility handling in
#15687.
Default policy
DYN_ENABLE_STRUCTURAL_TAGfalsetrueDYN_STRUCTURAL_TAG_SCOPEautoalwaysDYN_STRUCTURAL_TAG_SCHEMAautoautoThe
autoschema mode now means:strictorstrict:true: use the declared parameter schema;strict:false: constrain the native tool envelope but relax theargument schema;
DYN_STRUCTURAL_TAG_SCHEMA=strict: use the declared schema for every tool, overriding
strict:false.Automatic tool choice remains optional. Structural guidance does not make the
model call a tool; it constrains the output only if the model starts the
model-native tool-call format.
Request processing and fallback

builder configuration. This PR does not add or change model-to-parser mappings.
When no builder exists, or a builder cannot safely produce a structural tag,
Dynamo falls back instead of introducing a new request error:
fallback where applicable; and
fallback rather than receiving an incompatible generic JSON grammar.
Disabling structural tags turns off optional structural guidance. Rust still
applies native tags to Kimi K2
requiredand named choices and Kimi K3 namedchoices (including
kimi-k3), even when the mode isOff. Native Rust sidecarsretain these exceptions. Kimi K3 named tags use the new argument-schema
enforcement, so the opt-out does not restore main's grammar. The lookahead
example still fails compilation with XGrammar 0.2.1 and 0.2.7 unless the tool
sets
strict:falseunder schema modeauto; global schema modestrictoverrides that workaround.
Equivalent environment setting:
strict:falseis only an argument-schema opt-out; it does not disable themodel-native tool envelope. Operators that want the previous conditional
activation policy can set:
With that scope, required and named choices remain eligible, while automatic
choice is activated only for explicit
strict:trueorparallel_tool_calls:false.Frontend and sidecar behavior
The same mode, scope, and schema decisions are applied by:
The Python paths share a small policy helper while retaining backend-specific
grammar construction and response handling.
Native Rust sidecars retain their existing conservative
off/autoruntimeconfiguration and are not included in this default change. This prevents a
sidecar from receiving unsupported structural guidance merely because the
regular worker defaults changed.
For
tool_choice="none", Rust preprocessing can install parser-specific tokenexclusions. Python vLLM and SGLang retain their existing prompt and response
shaping; this PR does not add token banning to those paths.
Affected parsers
The Rust parser registry currently exposes structural-tag builders for:
hermesandqwen25;qwen3_coderandnemotron_nano;deepseek_v3_2anddeepseek_v4;kimi_k2,kimi_k3, andkimi-k3; andinkling.Other Rust parsers, including currently tested Mistral and Gemma paths, continue
through compatibility fallback.
Python vLLM and SGLang support is determined by the parser implementation in
the installed engine version. It can therefore differ from the Rust registry.
Missing builders and builder failures use the compatibility path; backend
grammar compilation errors are subject to the limitation above.
Correctness validation
Validated results include:
639/700 = 91.3%to698/700 = 99.7%, with 100% schema validity among emitted calls;24/54 = 44.4%to42/54 = 77.8%;78/90 = 86.7%to84/90 = 93.3%;48/48, with the schema matrix unchanged at30/30; andequivalence, confirming compatibility fallback.
The graph deliberately reports the validated frontend/parser combination for
each model; it does not imply that every engine version exposes the same Python
parser capabilities.
