Overview:

vLLM decode-context parallelism widens the logical KV block represented by each KV event, but Dynamo currently registers the physical cache block size. For a physical block size of 16 with DCP=2, vLLM emits 32-token blocks and Dynamo rejects them because it expects 16.

This change mirrors the SGLang fix by multiplying the physical main-attention block size by the DCP world size before configuring Dynamo's KV-event publisher and model metadata.

Details:

  • Derive the router-facing vLLM KV-event block size as physical_block_size * decode_context_parallel_size.
  • Apply the same logic to cache-group metadata and compatibility fallback paths without multiplying an already cached value twice.
  • Add unit coverage for DCP-aware selection, fallback behavior, and multiple attention cache kinds.
  • Extend the vLLM router harness with TP/DCP GPU allocation and nightly functional, two-worker routing, and DCP4 scale coverage.

Validation

The exact staged patch (75a78fdef350bf64a76f8a2ba2d261e1852e0d115d0b5de63c8dd1fc7a3c1f31) was tested before push by Slurm job 16285517 on eight H100 80GB GPUs with vLLM 0.27.1 and Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct:

  • Unpatched TP4/DCP2 functional control: expected failure with the 16-vs-32 block mismatch.
  • Unpatched TP4/DCP2 two-worker routing control: expected failure with the same mismatch.
  • Patched TP4/DCP2 functional test: passed with 32-token logical blocks.
  • Patched TP4/DCP2 two-worker routing test: passed.
  • Patched TP8/DCP4 scale test: passed with 64-token logical blocks.
  • Slurm accounting: COMPLETED, exit 0:0, runtime 11m11s.
  • pre-commit run --all-files: passed.

Where should the reviewer start?

  1. components/src/dynamo/vllm/cache_info.py for the DCP-aware block-size calculation and fallback behavior.
  2. components/src/dynamo/vllm/tests/test_vllm_cache_info.py for focused unit coverage.
  3. tests/router/test_router_e2e_with_vllm.py for the real multi-GPU regression tests.

H100 performance validation

I ran a baseline-vs-fixed validation on Slurm job 16613679 against commit 7f6c07c183550b07f88a6fa51ecbd17a24201494.

Test setup

  • 8x NVIDIA H100 80GB on pool0-01566
  • Qwen/Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct
  • Two vLLM workers, TP=4 each
  • DCP=2 under test; DCP=1 as the control
  • 8,192 input tokens, 7,168-token high-reuse prefix, 16 output tokens
  • Concurrency 1/8/32
  • ABBA baseline/fixed ordering, two pairs and three repetitions per pair
  • 1,056 measured requests total
  • Percentages are median paired improvements; brackets are bootstrap 95% CIs

Mechanism validation

  • Baseline DCP2 reproduced the bug: the router indexed 0/8 expected logical KV blocks.
  • Fixed DCP2 indexed 8/8 blocks on the owner and 0 on the peer.
  • Baseline emitted the expected 32-vs-16 block rejection warning 12 times.
  • Fixed workers configured the correct 32-token DCP-aware event block size.
  • The mechanism probe selected the worker owning the prefix.
  • DCP1 remained correct at 8/8 before and after the change.
High-reuse concurrency p50 TTFT p95 TTFT Output throughput Route locality Cached-token ratio
1 +24.0% [1.9, 35.6] +32.8% [30.7, 35.5] +11.8% [8.0, 15.1] +50.0 pp +43.8 pp
8 +8.5% [-3.2, 17.9] +11.7% [4.1, 26.8] +29.4% [23.1, 43.7] +21.9 pp +19.1 pp
32 +25.0% [10.5, 44.2] +27.8% [17.4, 32.1] +29.0% [13.4, 41.3] +18.8 pp +16.4 pp

Controls:

  • DCP1 at concurrency 8: p50 TTFT +2.8%, throughput +0.5%.
  • No-reuse DCP2 at concurrency 8: throughput -2.9% with a CI crossing zero; p50 TTFT was noisy at -11.8%.

The mechanism result is conclusive: the fix makes Dynamo consume vLLM's DCP KV events using the correct logical block size, the router sees the blocks, and real vLLM cache reuse increases. High-reuse workloads show substantial performance improvements, particularly at concurrency 1 and 32 and in throughput at concurrency 8.

The harness's deliberately strict aggregate classification is INCONCLUSIVE, rather than PASS, because the concurrency-8 p50 TTFT gain was 8.5% versus a predeclared 10% threshold, locality gained 21.9 pp versus a 30 pp threshold, and the noisy no-reuse TTFT estimate narrowly exceeded its +/-10% guardrail. This is a threshold and replication caveat, not a failure of the block-processing mechanism.

Do not add mutable module-level test configuration.

VLLM_DCP2_ARGS persists across test executions and is read by test_vllm_dcp2_basic. A future helper mutation can make this test order-dependent. Replace it with a _vllm_dcp2_args() -> dict[str, Any] factory that returns a fresh dictionary for each call.

As per coding guidelines, “Flag any mutable object ({}, [], set()) at module scope that tests read or write.” As per path instructions, test coverage must not “leak mutable module state.”

Use lazy logger formatting.

Parked pending an upstream vLLM change

Converting back to draft. Not abandoned — please don't spend review time on it for now.

Why. Rather than Dynamo re-deriving physical_block_size * decode_context_parallel_size, we're going to fix this in vLLM first so it hands us the effective value directly. Dynamo pins vllm==0.27.1 exactly rather than a range, so the derivation in this PR was always temporary code that gets deleted at the version bump which picks up the upstream field. There are no DCP users on Dynamo today, so the gap until that ships costs nothing.

Upstream shape. Add an effective KV-event block size to get_kv_cache_group_metadata, sourced from the same manager value that produces the events. Two things make this small: vLLM already has this pattern in KVCacheSpec.storage_block_size (kv_cache_interface.py:127, consumed by gpu/attn_utils.py:290), and the value is already reachable at scheduler.kv_cache_manager.coordinator.single_type_managers[i].block_size.

vLLM keeps KVCacheSpec.block_size physical on purpose — it drives page_size_bytes and therefore real tensor allocation (gpu_model_runner.py:7406-7465) — so the ask is an additional field, not a change to that one.

Staying open as insurance. If the upstream field is rejected or lands in a different shape, this branch is a validated working fallback. About half of it survives regardless: the e2e regression test and the TP/DCP test harness assert end behaviour, not the derivation.

Tracked in DYN-3997 (parked) and DYN-4208, which also covers the same defect on the Rust sidecar path — a separate code path this PR cannot reach.

Thanks @coderabbitai and @alec-flowers for the review comments; the upstream direction came out of that discussion.

@JulienDarve Understood. I will not spend further review time on this draft PR.

The upstream get_kv_cache_group_metadata field is the appropriate integration point. It keeps KVCacheSpec.block_size physical and avoids temporary Dynamo-side DCP multiplication.

The existing end-to-end regression coverage and TP/DCP test harness remain useful when the upstream API is available. The separate Rust sidecar scope in DYN-4208 also remains correctly excluded from this PR.
