feat: model when vLLM's async engine admits, preempts and returns outputs - #683
Async vLLM replays now free blocks and preempt like vLLM, with opt-in launch timing.
Block frees, on by default. On a busy engine, blocks a request frees in pass k first serve pass k+2, on every
attention-DP rank. A CPU-tier connector's finish work moves with the free, as in vLLM, so feat: model vLLM's CPU offloading connectors for agentic replay on several workers #679's offloading_v0_32
and simple_cpu_v0_32 connectors store a finished request's blocks a pass later.
Preemption, on by default. With a CPU tier (kv_cache.host_offload), replay does not preempt a request that the
pass in flight runs.
workers.aggregated.scheduler.launch, opt-in. Measured launch costs set when outputs reach the client and which
pass an arrival joins. Passes do not move. It needs one-GPU aggregated workers with async scheduling, in offline
replay (--stack engine).
fpm_learned.charge_own_launch, opt-in, for FPM fits on Dynamo's vLLM records. Dynamo ends a pass's record when
vLLM processes its output, after the next pass is launched. So the record before an eager pass carries that pass's
launch, a fit spreads it over passes of its kind, and launch would count it a second time. charge_own_launch
moves each launch back to its own record before fitting. The learned trainer applies it with --launch-stall FILE;
a regression's tune_with_fpms takes its output as is.
By default, async vLLM results change only near the KV capacity limit. Telemetry's KV gauges also change: on a busy
engine, they count a finished request's blocks one pass longer. Synchronous vLLM, SGLang and TensorRT-LLM replays are
byte-identical to main.

Fix, public fixture.tests/e2e/configs/unified_cli/predict/engine/01-synthetic-default.yaml has a tiny model
with fixed 1 ms prefill and decode. The run below gives it 64 concurrent synthetic requests, which overfill 512 G1
blocks.

With async_scheduling: false, or with 4,096 G1 blocks, every simulated metric and telemetry sample matches main.
Mean and std TPOT can differ in the 16th digit, as they do between two runs of main.
Fix, replay-parity rows. The aisimulate-replay-parity skill's runner replayed its frozen engine-only configs on
the 5,000-row Mooncake slice. Each revision ran twice, in separate processes, with identical results.
Parity setup
The skill pins the trace slice by SHA-256.
The configs' expected blocks were removed, since they were pinned on an older revision.
Both runners were built without --locked, since the committed runner lockfile does not match main.
Added rows: an async_scheduling: false copy of each vLLM row, a CPU-tier copy of the aggregated vLLM row
(native_host_offload: {num_host_blocks: 24576}, kv_cache_bytes_per_token: 65536), and two copies of that row
with feat: model vLLM's CPU offloading connectors for agentic replay on several workers #679's offloading_v0_32 and simple_cpu_v0_32 connectors.

Only async vLLM rows move: near the capacity limit, admissions shift by a pass. Preemptions move by a few either way,
and each run's end by under 1%. Replay wall time per row, the best of 16 interleaved runs, is within 0.98 to 1.03 of main; the SGLang and TensorRT-LLM rows, whose code this does not change, vary as much.
launch, new capability.main has no input for the CPU time of a launch. It returns outputs at the pass end and
admits arrivals by counting passes. This example is from crates/core/tests/replay_vllm_async.rs. A pass with prefill
takes 100 ms, and a decode pass 10 ms. Launches take 2, 20 and 50 ms (decode, piecewise and eager), with a 16-token
graph limit.

Negative or boundary cases:
A synchronous engine still frees at once.
Without a CPU tier, the request is still preempted.
An arrival exactly at a busy engine's decision waits.
launch is rejected on more than one GPU, without async scheduling, with ngram speculation, on prefill or decode
workers, and by runners without the capability.
charge_own_launch rejects a repeated (worker_id, counter_id), a record without either, and a stall table
missing a value or holding a negative or NaN one. An explicit 0 moves nothing.
Expected-value derivation: in each replay test's comments and in the launch table above.
v0.30.0 is the first release whose running loop stops instead of preempting such a request (vLLM #49675). v0.28.0,
which feat: model vLLM async-scheduling admission in replay #624 cites, preempts it. These rules are unchanged on vLLM main.
feat: fit FPM regressions to measured MTP rounds #691: its fit.linear.max_cudagraph_capture_size is the same vLLM option as launch.max_cudagraph_capture_size.
Whichever lands second rejects a run that sets them to different values.
With async scheduling vLLM commits pass k+1 before it processes pass k's
outputs, and it frees a finished request's blocks only then, so the
blocks of a request that finishes in pass k first serve pass k+2. With a
CPU tier it also defers freeing the blocks of a request that the pass in
flight runs, so it does not preempt that request; the running request
that needed the blocks waits a pass. A pass with no work lets vLLM
process the pass in flight at once, so replay then decides again at the
same instant.
Every async-scheduling vLLM replay under KV pressure changes. Synchronous
engines, other backends and runs without KV pressure are unchanged.

workers.aggregated.scheduler.launch takes the CPU cost of launching each
kind of pass, measured on the deployment: decode-only, with prefill
within max_cudagraph_capture_size (piecewise CUDA graphs), and larger
eager passes, whose launch also waits for the CUDA launch queue.
vLLM's engine loop decides and launches pass k+1 before it returns pass
k's outputs, and decides each pass once it has launched the previous
one. With launch, a pass's outputs reach the client once the next pass
is launched instead of at the pass end, and an arrival joins the first
pass decided after it instead of skipping a fixed number of passes. With
zero costs the admission rule reproduces the pass count.
Ranks hold outputs until vLLM would return them; offline replay releases
them, and response detokenization starts then. Passes do not move.
launch needs one-GPU aggregated vLLM workers with async scheduling,
where vLLM runs its uniprocess executor, and offline replay; other
runners reject it.
Opt-in: unset, outputs leave at the pass end and the pass-count rule
applies, as before.

Risk: High. The three areas that need the most human attention are async KV-block release and CPU-tier preemption, launch-timed output delivery and admission, and the launch configuration and charge_own_launch contracts.
Changes
Async vLLM scheduling models delayed admission and defers reuse of finished-request KV blocks. With a CPU tier, it retains blocks for requests in the in-flight pass and avoids preempting those requests.
When workers.aggregated.scheduler.launch is configured, offline replay models launch costs, output-emission times, and which pass can admit an arriving request. The setting requires supported aggregated vLLM async scheduling on one-GPU workers.
The change adds PassLaunchConfig, output-emission hooks, replay handling for held outputs, runner capability checks, and --launch-stall FILE for assigning launch stalls to their own records during learned-model fitting.
Evidence and readiness
The merge-base comparison confirms 35 changed files, with 1,498 additions and 56 deletions. The supplied diff and search output confirm the launch configuration, emission hooks, runner capability, and learned-model adjustment implementation.
The PR description reports that Rust core tests passed, public API tests passed, and 5,523 Python SDK unit tests passed. It also reports 4,707 passes, 18 failures, and 18 errors in pytest -c pytest.ini tests; the author says those failures and errors also occur on main on macOS. These results are author-reported and were not independently verified. Fast CI and full CI are pending.
No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable. The reported tests support technical quality but do not constitute review approval. Merge readiness is unconfirmed.
This change adds optional vLLM pass-launch timing to aggregated asynchronous engine replay. It models pass admission decisions, deferred KV-block release, and delayed output emission. It also adds launch-stall adjustment for learned forward-pass data, configuration and compatibility checks, tests, documentation, and provenance notices.
Adds PassLaunchConfig and optional scheduler launch settings. Validation restricts the setting to supported vLLM aggregated-worker configurations. Engine arguments serialize the setting, and runner compatibility checks require launch support and offline execution.
The vLLM core tracks request arrival and pass timing, defers applicable block frees, and calculates output-return timing. Preemption excludes tracked in-flight requests. Scheduler tests cover admission, deferred frees, and CPU-tier behavior.
Held outputs and replay emission crates/core/src/engine/generalized/*, crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/rank.rs, crates/core/src/replay/agg.rs, crates/core/src/replay/components/engine.rs, crates/core/src/replay/engine.rs, crates/core/tests/replay_vllm_async.rs
Ranks can hold pass outputs and release due emissions independently of pass completion. Aggregated replay schedules emission deadlines and processes output payloads. Replay tests cover output timing, admission, and supported topology.
Adds charge_own_launch and the --launch-stall option. When configured, training, holdout, and evaluation inputs receive the adjustment. Documentation describes the timing interpretation and adjustment.

Explanation
The new --launch-stall CLI path remains untested. The option is registered in fpm_learned.py:1348-1353; _load_iterations reads the JSON and transforms records for train, evaluate, and additional holdout FPMs at :1269-1274 and :1281-1287. The only new test calls charge_own_launch directly (test_fpm_learned.py:184-204). Searches of the test trees found no launch_stall or --launch-stall test reference. The existing CLI test invokes train without the option (:458-467). This PR therefore adds an input path whose parser and JSON-to-command behavior are not tested.
Resolution
Add CLI tests that invoke both train and evaluate with temporary FPM input and --launch-stall JSON, then verify that transformed wall times affect the result. Also test that omitting the option preserves existing behavior and that malformed or incomplete stall JSON fails with a clear error.
Full details: Compatibility Boundaries
Explanation
Python accepts scheduler.launch with ngram speculation, but the runner disables async scheduling and Rust then rejects the same configuration. In python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/config/engine.py:935-977, launch validation runs before _validate_speculation; _validate_prediction_launch at lines 1357-1378 rejects only explicit async_scheduling=False and does not check ngram speculation. The runner sets async_scheduling=False for ngram at python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/runner.py:1928-1938. The compiler transports launch at python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/compiler.py:777-782. Rust rejects it because max_concurrent_batches() returns one when async scheduling is false (crates/core/src/engine/config.rs:1102-1111), while launch validation requires more than one (1194-1203). The added tests cover launch topology and transport, but not launch with ngram speculation (tests/test_cli_config.py:403-429, tests/test_runner.py:1249-1282). The PR leaves Cargo and Python packaging manifests unchanged, and the existing maturin configuration still builds the Python package with the aisim-core extension (python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml; Cargo.toml; crates/core/Cargo.toml).
Resolution
Reject workers.aggregated.scheduler.launch together with engine.speculation.kind == "ngram" in Python prediction validation. Add a runner guard before it forces async_scheduling=False, with a clear error. Add tests for both typed configuration validation and the runner/native execution-rank path. Keep Rust validation as the final boundary.

An attention-DP group pass ends when its slowest rank does, but each rank
compared its own pass end with the next pass start. Only the slowest rank
treated its pass as in flight: the others freed finished requests' blocks
before deciding the next pass and dropped the CPU-tier preemption rule, as
main does.
Take the in-flight pass end from the boundary that completes the pass, which
the ranks share.

When requests arrived after vLLM decided a pass that has nothing else to run,
replay admitted them in that pass while the requests the pass in flight had
finished still held their blocks. An arrival that fit only in those blocks
waited a whole pass, unlike main and vLLM: vLLM's empty step processes the
pass in flight, which frees them, before it decides again.
Stop at such an arrival while a pass is in flight, so the pass stays empty
and replay decides again at the same instant, after freeing those blocks.

With launch, a pass's outputs are held until the next pass is launched, and
a launch that lasts until its pass ends releases them at that pass's end.
Replay applied the completing pass's outputs first, so a request that
finished in that pass lost its state before its held output arrived, and
the run failed.
Apply the outputs due at an instant before the completions at that instant.

vLLM runs any batch with more than max_cudagraph_capture_size tokens without
a CUDA graph, decode batches included. launch charged a decode-only pass
decode_ms whatever its size, so a large decode batch, such as an MTP batch,
returned its previous pass's outputs too early.

Release held outputs before immediate pass completions.
If a pass produces a held first token and the next pass completes the same request with zero decode duration, drive_ready_workers processes the terminal token before this call releases the first token. Terminal handling removes the request state, so processing the first token then fails with offline replay missing request state. Process newly due emissions after pass-start effects but before handle_engine_effects processes immediate completions. Add a two-token replay test with positive prefill duration and zero decode duration. The rank holds the earlier output until the next pass starts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/config/engine.py:1358-1359 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Reject scheduler.launch when ngram speculation leaves async_scheduling unset.
The validator rejects launch only when async_scheduling is explicitly False. With speculation.kind: ngram and async_scheduling unset, vLLM runs with async scheduling off. The rank path sets that value to False (runner.py:1935). The launch contract requires async scheduling, so this combination violates the contract. Reject it at the public boundary.
Where the rank reaches the native engine with async scheduling off, the native check rejects the configuration late (config.rs:1068-1073). The error does not name the public field.
Proposed fix
- if worker.scheduler.async_scheduling is False:+ ngram = engine.speculation is not None and engine.speculation.kind == "ngram"+ if worker.scheduler.async_scheduling is False or (worker.scheduler.async_scheduling is None and ngram):
raise ValueError("workers.aggregated.scheduler.launch requires async_scheduling")

274-275: Keep engine output timing separate from client receipt.
This repeats the existing finding. The next launch returns the previous pass's outputs to the engine and starts detokenization; it does not establish client receipt. Replace “reach the client” with “leave the engine,” and apply the same terminology to lines 211-214. The field table already uses the correct “leave” wording, and detokenization is documented as the step before client receipt. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

282-290: Held outputs can strand when a command drains the core.
complete_pass stores outputs in held.latest when the core is still ready. Only a later resolve_pass moves them to held.returned. If a command such as CancelRequest of a different request then empties the core, no further pass runs. next_emission_ms reads only held.returned, so no deadline exists and is_drained stays false.
The current code has no flush for this path. The existing test at Lines 1391-1432 covers only cancellation of the same request. Confirm whether the earlier fix covers the other-request case.

#691 adds fit.linear.max_cudagraph_capture_size for the same vLLM setting. A deployment needs both equal; if they drift, the FPM prices a pass as graph while launch prices it eager, and nothing checks it. Could both read one engine-level value (or launch take it from the FPM fit)?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed: the two must match, and nothing checks it. launch can't take the value from the fit alone, since it also runs under polynomial and fixed timing and under fits without eager. I'd keep both and reject a run that sets them to different values, in resolve_role_timing, where the rank parses its timing config next to launch. Whichever of this PR and #691 lands second adds that check with a test. If you'd rather have one value, the rank could carry it and fill the fit's field, the way the runner fills kv_block_size from block_size.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Do you have the measured launch costs (e.g. from nsys) and the GT TTFT/ITL comparison from the Nemotron runs that motivated this? Could you add them to the PR description?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added to the description under Before / after ("launch, measured"). On Nemotron 3 Super (NVFP4) on one GB200, a launch takes 6.52 ms for a decode pass, 73.72 ms for a prefill pass of up to 4,096 tokens, and 180.81 ms for a larger, eager pass. Against three GPU runs at 64, 192 and 320 users, launch brings the p99 decode-pass interval to 181 / 216 / 255 ms; the GPU shows 183 / 290 / 351 ms, and without launch it's 26 / 68 / 66 ms. The check replays the rule over the runs' measured pass sequences; it is not a full simulator run.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
FPM’s pass time is scheduler wall time measured under synchronous scheduling, so it already includes that pass’s launch. launch then delays the previous pass’s outputs by the launch cost while the pass time stays the same, so an async replay may count each launch twice.
cc @tedzhouhk@diffractiongoo WDYT? Should FPM keep the launch inside the pass time (and launch not delay outputs again), or measure the pass without it and let the replay model the launch?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Currently, the instrumented scheduler supports async scheduling timing and times the delta between two consecutive batches' issue time. Assume a equal CPU overheads per batch, this time should cover e2e for one batch.
I'm working with vllm team to use cuda timing to directly time on GPU use cuda events, which is how sglang and trtllm times today. With this approach, it does not cover the CPU overhead, but it will be overlapped anyway.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed: with today's Dynamo records, launch counts some launches twice. The mechanism is a bit different from synchronous timing, though. As noted above, Dynamo's InstrumentedScheduler times async scheduling: wall_time is the interval between consecutive update_from_output() calls. In vLLM's async loop, pass k+1 is launched before the engine waits on pass k, so a record carries the next pass's launch, not its own.
That works out only when launches are about equal and hidden behind the GPU, and often they aren't. On the deployment in the description (Nemotron 3 Super NVFP4, one GB200), a decode launch takes 6.5 ms, but a prefill above the 4,096-token capture size runs eager and takes 181 ms. An ~18 ms decode pass followed by such a prefill is recorded at ~181 ms, and the prefill's own record comes out short. A fit spreads those 181 ms over decode passes, and launch adds them again where they happen. At 192 users, the median decode-pass interval is 56.5 ms on the GPU and 75.4 ms with such a fit plus launch. The same launch is why "overlapped anyway" doesn't hold for eager prefills: the GPU's p99 decode-pass interval at 64 users is 183 ms, and that tail is what launch models.
So I'd go with your second option, and the CUDA-event timing in vllm-project/vllm#61690 (with vllm-project/vllm#61691 and vllm-project/vllm#52061) provides it. The interval includes host-submission gaps, so each pass carries its own work plus any wait for its own launch, and nothing of the next pass's. That is what launch assumes, so it would need no change on those records.
Those PRs will take time to land, and the records in use today have the problem. The current head has a stopgap, charge_own_launch (--launch-stall), which moves each launch back before fitting. On the same check it brings that median back to 57.2 ms, but it needs per-deployment values measured by hand, so I don't consider it a general fix, and I haven't found a reasonable one yet.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.

First tokens. A prefill's own launch sits in the record before it, so a fit on the records as recorded prices prefills short, with or without launch. With launch off, the median first token comes out 66 / 76 / 792 ms early, and 3 ms late / 10 ms late / 129 ms early after --launch-stall. So this comes from the records, not from launch.
A fit that needs no measured values. Fit on sums of 8 consecutive records. Inside a window a launch only moves between neighbouring records, so the sum is right except at the window's two ends. It matches --launch-stall within 1 ms in the table, and with launch on it puts the median first token at 320 users 42 ms early instead of 160. Limits: it fits all pass kinds together in one batch. AISimulate's fpm_regression fits one plane per workload store online from single records, and the learned model is a tree ensemble, so neither can use it as is. Sums of 32 drifted low and were unstable, and this is one model on one deployment.
Suggestion. Remove --launch-stall from this PR. It needs launch values measured for each deployment, the generic fit needs a new fitting mode, and the CUDA-event timing in vllm-project/vllm#61690 removes the need for both. launch stays off by default, and until that timing lands the description will say that launch counts launches twice with fits trained on Dynamo's current vLLM records. If you'd like an interim fix before then, the window-sum fit could come as a separate PR. WDYT?
…cords
With async scheduling on a one-GPU worker, vLLM launches pass k+1 before it
processes pass k's output, and Dynamo's vLLM producer ends pass k's wall_time
when that output arrives. A launch longer than pass k (an eager pass over
max_cudagraph_capture_size tokens) therefore lands in the record of the pass
before it, and a model fitted on such records learns how often each kind of
pass follows another.
charge_own_launch(iterations, stall_ms, max_cudagraph_capture_size) moves that
stall back to its own record: each record gives up what it carries for the next
pass's kind and takes back what its predecessor carried for it. Records follow
each other by worker_id and consecutive counter_id, so a pass after an idle
heartbeat keeps its own launch. The learned trainer applies it with
--launch-stall FILE; a regression's tune_with_fpms takes its output as is.
The docs now describe the vLLM producer's boundary as it is: from the previous
step's output arrival, or from schedule() after an idle step.

Replay passes engine arguments through AISimulate’s public materialize_engine_launch_config contract before normalization. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:358-374]
Dynamo tests explicitly depend on that public contract. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_namespaces.py:194-202]
Dynamo pins exact AISimulate and aisimulate-core versions, so consuming this feature requires synchronized release/version updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::pyproject.toml:17][::ai-dynamo/dynamo::Cargo.toml:67-68]
ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator
The legacy WorkerSettingsV1 has no scheduler or launch field. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schema.py:85-96]
Its strict schema forbids additional properties, so scheduler.launch cannot pass through the frozen v1 estimate contract unchanged. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schemas/estimate-request-v1.schema.json:1]
The repository’s migration documentation still targets legacy AISimulate 0.12.0, confirming it is a compatibility reference rather than a consumer of this new setting. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:15-30]
With async scheduling vLLM calls the connector's request_finished from
update_from_output, after it has decided the next pass, and SimpleCPU's
finish store goes out with the step after that. Check that a request
finishing in pass 9 has its last block stored in pass 10 with async
scheduling and in pass 9 without it.

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.
Failed pre-merge checks:
- Cross-Layer Contract:
Add CLI tests that invoke both `train` and `evaluate` with temporary FPM input
and `--launch-stall` JSON, then verify that transformed wall times affect the
result. Also test that omitting the option preserves existing behavior and that
malformed or incomplete stall JSON fails with a clear error.
- Compatibility Boundaries:
Reject `workers.aggregated.scheduler.launch` together with
`engine.speculation.kind == "ngram"` in Python prediction validation. Add a
runner guard before it forces `async_scheduling=False`, with a clear error. Add
tests for both typed configuration validation and the runner/native
execution-rank path. Keep Rust validation as the final boundary.

Dynamo’s replay path passes engine arguments through AISimulate’s public materialize_engine_launch_config API, then normalizes the result. Its namespace test also identifies this as the public launch contract. The search found no direct references to the new scheduler.launch setting or emission hooks, so this is the integration boundary to check for transport of the new setting. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:363-374] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_namespaces.py:194-202]
Dynamo pins exact AISimulate and aisimulate-core versions. Using this feature downstream therefore requires compatible published versions and coordinated pin updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::pyproject.toml:17] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::Cargo.toml:68]
ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator
The V1 compatibility schema’s _StrictModel forbids extra fields, and WorkerSettingsV1 defines a fixed set of fields with no scheduler-launch field. Passing scheduler.launch through this legacy worker contract would be rejected; treat AIC as a compatibility boundary, not a consumer of the new setting. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schema.py:21-22] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schema.py:85-93]
Its migration guide identifies AIC 0.12.0 as the compatibility release for moving workflows to AISimulate. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:8-16]

The documentation is updated. The identified schema describes prediction output, and no checked-in engine-config schema or required fixture update is established. The concern does not identify an actionable omission.
…wn_launch
charge_own_launch found each record's next pass through a dict keyed by
(worker_id, counter_id), so a repeated pair, from a worker restart or two
captures of one worker, kept only the last record and moved a stall
between unrelated passes. A missing stall entry became 0.0 and left that
kind's records uncorrected.
It now rejects a record without counter_id or worker_id, a repeated pair,
a stall table without a finite, nonnegative value for each carrier and
next-pass kind, and a capture size that is not a positive integer.
--launch-stall rejects a file without exactly its two keys.

train with --launch-stall changes every training target but did not say
so in the artifact. Its metadata now holds the file's exact contents
under launch_stall, and has no such key without the option. The file is
read and checked once, before any record is loaded.
A CLI test trains and evaluates with and without --launch-stall on
records where an eager launch lands in the decode record before it, and
checks the decode prediction, the evaluation and the errors for a file
missing a key or a carrier.

vLLM turns async scheduling off for ngram drafts, and launch requires
it. Prediction validation accepted the pair, and the runner then turned
async scheduling off and passed launch on to the engine. Both now reject
it with a message that names ngram speculation; the engine's own check
stays as the last guard.
