Summary

The nightly after #242 selected the merged API commit but failed before building any artifacts because it required Dynamo #14065 to merge first. Dynamo needs the new nightly wheel to validate that migration, so the producer was waiting on its own consumer.

Remove the downstream-migration prerequisite from scheduled and approved manual nightly publication. Nightlies retain source validation, development version stamping, manual approval, compliance checks, wheel smoke tests, FPE qualification, and the security hand-off. Scope the migration checklist/checker and documentation to stable publication; this repository does not yet have a standalone stable-publication workflow.

The intended order is: publish the AISimulate nightly, validate and merge the downstream migration against that wheel, then complete the migration checklist before a stable release.

Validation

Local validation of the updated branch with the Fast CI Python 3.12/pinned dependencies:

  • python scripts/check_prediction_numerics.py --fetch-baseline-only, then python -m pytest -c /dev/null tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py tests/test_ci_qualification.py tests/test_release_fpe.py -q -p no:cacheprovider --override-ini=addopts= --override-ini=filterwarnings=error: 308 passed. Temporary test repositories disable signing only for fixture commits; the PR commits retain DCO sign-offs.
  • Repeated the baseline-fetch command in an independent Git repository that initially lacked af91885d...: the exact baseline becomes available without changing the checked-out branch. Numerical baseline values and tolerances were not changed.
  • node --test tests/test_e2e_accuracy_workflow.mjs tests/test_fpm_accuracy_workflow.mjs: 21 passed. These execute extracted workflow scripts with mocked GitHub responses, including scheduled/manual target validation and unchanged-build handling.
  • CODEOWNERS policy tests: 107 passed. Documentation-link unit tests: 7 passed, with all 66 indexed Markdown files checked. Copyright/legal consistency, changed-file Ruff/format, whitespace, and strict CODEOWNERS coverage pass.
  • Gate boundary coverage: pending/malformed/missing stable declarations fail closed; nightly does not invoke that checker; source validation, development stamping, approval, compliance, and successful build/FPE/license dependencies still gate the nightly hand-off.
  • The repository pre-commit formatter/config mismatch remains; formatting-only hook rewrites were restored after AST comparison and verified with the explicit repository Ruff configuration.

Final review correction at baceb1f63106ab6280bc2e7b019046fd362f5624: the nightly contract inspects the entire parsed workflow, including conditions, environments, and action inputs. The 308-test contract suite and 21 JavaScript tests pass locally; mutation validation rejects both forbidden references in all 18 workflow/job/step and if/env/with combinations. Reusable child workflows were inspected through their active callers; these local results are not independent hosted child-workflow runs.

These are local tests and workflow-script simulations, not a completed nightly publication. Hosted checks on the latest head are tracked separately.

After merge, start a new nightly from the updated main workflow. Rerunning the failed run keeps its original workflow revision and therefore keeps the obsolete gate.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo — PR #14065 branch (d86bb11d)

  • Dynamo pins one exact published AISimulate version (0.1.0.dev1) in both Python and container requirements. Its consistency tests require an exact PyPI release and published wheel staging. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
    • pyproject.toml:17
    • container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:4-5
    • tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_consistency.py:97-145
  • Runtime images install the staged AISimulate wheel from their wheelhouse, so downstream validation depends on the nightly publishing the canonical artifact rather than merely producing source output. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
    • container/templates/planner.Dockerfile:81
    • container/templates/wheel_builder.Dockerfile:630-643,677

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator — main (f254959e)

  • AIC explicitly requires stable AISimulate 0.12 artifacts for migration and says development builds must not substitute for the stable transition artifact. This supports retaining migration checks for stable publication while allowing development nightlies to proceed. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
    • README.md:40-41,68-80
  • The migration checklist requires verification of stable Python wheels and Rust crates. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
    • .github/AIC_MIGRATION_CHECKLIST.md:13-27

The downstream contracts align with the PR’s intended sequence: publish a canonical nightly first, validate Dynamo against that exact wheel, and retain the migration checklist as a stable-release gate.

📝 Summary

Risk level: Medium.

Top areas for human review:

  1. Confirm that the stable release path invokes check_release_migrations.py with both target gates.
  2. Confirm that nightly publication retains all required gates after removing the downstream migration prerequisite.
  3. Start a new nightly from the updated workflow revision instead of rerunning the obsolete failed run.

Changed behavior

  • Nightly publication no longer depends on downstream migration completion.
  • Required nightly validation, approval, compliance, wheel smoke, FPE, and security gates remain.
  • Migration checks now apply to stable publication.
  • Contract tests cover the new nightly and stable-publication behavior.

Evidence

  • 308 CI, qualification, and release contract tests reportedly passed.
  • 21 JavaScript workflow tests reportedly passed.
  • Mutation, Ruff, formatting, whitespace, documentation-link, and CODEOWNERS checks were reported.
  • The intended sequence is to publish the nightly, validate and merge the downstream migration against that wheel, then complete the stable-release checklist.
  • The supplied review summary reports no remaining actionable issues.

Missing evidence and merge readiness

  • The returned shell output contains only execution status and log paths. It does not expose the diff.
  • The stable release path that must invoke the checker remains unverified.
  • Review severity counts are unavailable because no current finding list was supplied.
  • Technical quality is supported by the reported validation results.
  • Merge readiness remains conditional on hosted Fast CI, Full CI, the final review, and confirmation of stable-gate enforcement.

Walkthrough

Nightly publication no longer checks downstream migration completion. Stable release publication still requires migration checklist and target-gate validation. Documentation, checker messages, and workflow contract tests now use stable-release terminology.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo — branch of open PR #14065 (d86bb11d)

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate==0.1.0.dev1 for Python <3.13 and stages the same exact version in requirements.aisimulate.txt. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
    • pyproject.toml:15-18
    • container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:4-5
  • The wheel builder downloads that exact published wheel with pip download --only-binary=:all: --no-deps; it does not select an arbitrary nightly artifact. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
    • container/templates/wheel_builder.Dockerfile:629-643
  • Planner images install the staged AISimulate wheel, and Dynamo’s consistency tests require the Python, container, Cargo, and lockfile versions to match exactly. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
    • container/templates/planner.Dockerfile:67-85
    • tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_consistency.py:97-145
  • Dynamo still validates compatibility with the legacy AIC packages through its planner requirements and installed AISimulate metadata. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
    • tests/dependencies/test_aiconfigurator_consistency.py:121-193

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator — main (f254959e)

  • The migration guide explicitly requires stable aisimulate==0.12.0 artifacts to be published before migration; development releases do not satisfy the stable transition gate. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
    • docs/aisimulate_migration.md:13-19, 21-26
  • The repository checklist separately requires verifying stable Python wheels and Rust crates on all supported platforms, then running clean-environment smoke tests against those exact artifacts. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
    • .github/AIC_MIGRATION_CHECKLIST.md:13-27
  • The guide identifies Dynamo Planner/Router adapters as consumers requiring an appropriate AISimulate runner factory. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
    • docs/aisimulate_migration.md:48-67

The linked repositories therefore confirm two distinct contracts: Dynamo development currently consumes one exact published development wheel, while AIC’s stable migration requires a separately verified stable artifact. The nightly workflow change should preserve that distinction and ensure downstream validation uses the intended canonical nightly artifact rather than Dynamo’s existing pinned dependency.

Reviewed current head baceb1f63106ab6280bc2e7b019046fd362f5624 against main (39ad6d3cb80aceea897577c46c3fb9afd49c2dae). The six-file diff removes the circular downstream prerequisite from development nightlies while retaining source selection, version stamping, current-attempt manual approval, compliance, wheel smoke, FPE qualification, and the security hand-off. Stable migration declarations still fail closed. No remaining actionable finding in the current diff.

The original Repository Policy failure was the missing historical prediction-baseline commit. The author's merge of current main (c7185b8b) brings the deterministic baseline fetch into the active CI callers without changing expected predictions or tolerances. The remaining CodeRabbit finding is fixed in baceb1f6; its thread has been answered and resolved.

Local validation of this head:

  • python scripts/check_prediction_numerics.py --fetch-baseline-only, followed by python -m pytest -c /dev/null tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py tests/test_ci_qualification.py tests/test_release_fpe.py -q -p no:cacheprovider --override-ini=addopts= --override-ini=filterwarnings=error: 308 passed with Python 3.12 and Fast CI's pinned dependencies.
  • node --test tests/test_nightly_workflow.mjs tests/test_e2e_accuracy_workflow.mjs tests/test_fpm_accuracy_workflow.mjs: 21 passed. These are local simulations of extracted workflow scripts with mocked GitHub responses.
  • Mutation validation: both forbidden migration references are rejected in every workflow/job/step if, env, and with combination (18/18); the unchanged parsed workflow passes.
  • Explicit-config Ruff lint/format, changed-line whitespace, 66 Markdown destination checks, and strict CODEOWNERS coverage pass.

Hosted Fast CI, Full CI, and the final CodeRabbit pass are still required for this exact head before merge. These checks do not establish nightly publication; that requires a new run using the merged workflow.

@jasonqinzhou No actionable finding.

I inspected AISimulate PR #281 at baceb1f63106ab6280bc2e7b019046fd362f5624. The direct comparison to the supplied main commit confirms that nightly CI no longer evaluates the migration checker or release-gate declarations. The workflow contract retains the version-stamping order and required build, approval, compliance, smoke-test, FPE, and security-job dependencies.

I also inspected Dynamo PR #14065 at d86bb11d5f1c92e0516b9780b833eeefaa82197f. It stages an exact published AISimulate wheel (0.1.0.dev1) through requirements.aisimulate.txt. The wheel builder uses pip download --only-binary=:all: --no-deps, which supports the stated nightly-before-downstream-validation sequence.

The AISimulate checkout was shallow. Therefore, I could not calculate a merge-base diff. I reviewed the direct diff between the two supplied commits instead.

Closeout: #281 was merged by @tedzhouhk as fbd465d9ac14d37a6e73371ba4736a9364371eb5 while the final validation run was in progress. That run has now completed successfully.

  • Final validated PR head: baceb1f63106ab6280bc2e7b019046fd362f5624.
  • Full CI: success, 54 successful jobs and one expected release-staging skip.
  • Fast CI, CodeRabbit, DCO, and CODEOWNERS checks passed. The review thread is resolved.
  • The merge commit is present on main, and its tree is identical to the validated PR head.

The nightly gate change and expanded metadata contract are integrated. Nightly publication is a separate step requiring a new run of the merged workflow.
