Summary

  • Load whole-forward FPM data from an external fpm_parquet_path across prediction/recommendation YAML, Python, PyO3, and Rust APIs; remove the checked-in B200/H200 pairs.
  • Preserve each role's path through search samples, deployment metadata, runtime arguments, candidate YAML, and regular prefill/decode companions in AFD+PD. Companion compilation also preserves accepted precision overrides and custom systems_path, using the same alias validation as regular replay.
  • Anchor relative external paths at engine construction for both cache identity and lazy loading.
  • Reject empty or non-UTF-8 paths and paths on non-FPM engines before loading data; retain the current speculative-FPM shape validation.
  • Keep external tables memoized and allow covered cells plus default KV-capacity estimation without a backend/version data directory.
  • Preserve sidecar schema, digest, row-count, and identity validation; document concrete parquet/sidecar names and external-input examples.
  • Replace bundled-data replay/CLI-detail coverage with a temporary external pair and explicit numerical assertions.

External parquet example

  • Supply a local whole-forward FPM parquet and its adjacent sidecar:
    • /data/reviewed-fpm.parquet
    • /data/reviewed-fpm.metadata.json
  • The pair must match the model, hardware, backend/version, parallelism, and precision settings. For the unlisted version below, run with AIC_ALLOW_UNLISTED_VERSIONS=1.
from aiconfigurator_core.sdk.engine import EngineHandle

engine = EngineHandle.compile(
    model_path="MiniMaxAI/MiniMax-M2.7",
    system="h200_sxm",
    backend="vllm",
    backend_version="0.25.1",
    tp_size=4,
    moe_tp_size=4,
    moe_ep_size=1,
    forward_model="fpm",
    fpm_parquet_path="/data/reviewed-fpm.parquet",
)

latency_ms = engine.predict_prefill_latency(bs=1, isl=1024)
  • For prediction or recommendation YAML, add this timing configuration to the matching worker:
engine:
  workers:
    aggregated:
      timing:
        type: default
        forward_model: fpm
        fpm_parquet_path: /data/reviewed-fpm.parquet
  • Disaggregated configurations use workers.prefill.timing and workers.decode.timing; each role may use a different pair.
  • Rust reads and validates the pair on the first FPM query. Files stay outside the repository and must be accessible to the executing process. Invalid or missing artifacts raise an error without silently switching to operator-level prediction.

Validation

  • Merged main at ba64235a and resolved compiler/deployment metadata conflicts, preserving external FPM and speculative-decoding fields.

  • cargo test -p aisimulate-core --features python: 1,519 passed, 1 ignored. Updated hand-built Rust fixtures to resolve declared FP8-block donors after the data correction on main; assertions and production timing behavior are unchanged.

  • Runner, AFD, configuration, and sweeper suites: 841 passed, 5 downstream integration-only skips.

  • FPM and cross-package public API suites: 81 passed. Ngram speculation and unified traffic suites: 69 passed. Python tests used -p no:timeout and the native extension rebuilt after the merge.

  • Companion replay tests cover both phases, two output lengths, plain and aic_ precision names, all five quantization fields, and a system present only in the supplied custom systems directory with the environment override removed.

  • Regression coverage also verifies live engines across directory changes, lazy loading after a directory change, and missing/corrupt external artifacts.

  • Synthetic pairs produce 22 ms prefill and 6 ms decode; a second dataset produces 99 ms prefill. These fixtures verify data selection and execution, not silicon accuracy.

  • Changed-file Ruff checks, Rust formatting, documentation links, whitespace, and packaged legal files passed.

  • CI baseline provenance now references permanent main commit ba64235a instead of a pre-squash PR commit. All eight numerical sentinels passed independently at that main commit and this PR, with exactly matching results; values, query inputs, and tolerances are unchanged.

  • All 291 repository-policy tests passed locally using the CI tool versions.

  • Alias-routing follow-up (38effc46): normalize plain and aic_ timing-selection aliases before choosing external FPM. The four plain-name replay cases fail before the fix and pass afterward; 183 runner/AFD tests and 81 FPM/public API tests passed, including duplicate/invalid alias checks.

📝 Summary

Risk level: Medium.

Human attention should focus on:

  1. External Parquet and .metadata.json validation.
  2. Per-role path propagation through search, deployment, runtime, and candidate YAML.
  3. Behavior when bundled performance data is absent.

Changed behavior and public contracts

  • Adds fpm_parquet_path across Rust, PyO3, Python SDK, YAML, search, deployment, and runtime configuration.
  • Requires forward_model="fpm" and rejects empty or invalid paths.
  • Loads external FPM data through FpmForwardTable::from_parquet_path.
  • Includes the external path in shared-table cache identity.
  • Supports external FPM loading without bundled backend/version data.
  • Preserves aggregate, prefill, and decode paths through samples, deployment metadata, runtime arguments, and candidate YAML.
  • Adds AicEngineBuilder.fpm_parquet_path(...).
  • Removes checked-in FPM metadata assets.
  • Replaces bundled-data replay coverage with external-file coverage.
  • Normalizes forward_model and aic_forward_model aliases before companion routing and rejects duplicate selection fields.

Evidence supplied

  • The change summary identifies Rust validation, external loading, shared-cache handling, builder support, and runtime propagation.
  • The change summary identifies Python SDK, compiler, runner, sweeper, deployment, recommendation, and YAML propagation.
  • The change summary reports tests for path preservation, rejection behavior, external loading, YAML replay, runtime propagation, and alias handling.
  • The objectives report Rust and Python tests, parity tests, linting, formatting, compilation, documentation, policy, and numerical checks.
  • Shell inspection completed successfully.
  • The repository has no working-tree changes and no local diff.

Evidence still missing

  • Current review severity counts are unavailable because no review findings were supplied.
  • Test command output and pass/fail details are unavailable.
  • Merge readiness is not confirmed.
  • Independent review remains necessary for sidecar validation, cache identity, and behavior without bundled performance data.

Walkthrough

The change adds external FPM Parquet configuration, validation, loading, caching, runtime propagation, and test coverage across Rust and Python APIs. Documentation and CLI configuration now describe the required metadata sidecar and external artifact workflow.

REQUEST_CHANGES · 5.5/10 · high confidence

What this PR does

This PR removes the checked-in B200 and H200 whole-forward FPM datasets and adds an external fpm_parquet_path across prediction YAML, Python, PyO3, Rust configuration, and the Rust FPM parquet loader. The loader retains sidecar digest, schema, row-count, and identity validation while allowing covered FPM cells to run without an in-repository backend/version directory.

The external loader preserves the existing fail-closed sidecar and row-identity checks, includes the configured path in the shared-table identity, documents the intended public surfaces, and adds focused arbitrary-stem and directory-less loader tests.

Why this score

The technical score is 5.5 and the recommendation is REQUEST_CHANGES. The basic external prediction path works and the focused and parity suites are green, but two P1 contract failures remain: recommendation lowering drops the accepted external path before candidate execution, and the direct Python/Rust core APIs silently accept an FPM path on an op-level engine and return op-level predictions. The external path also disables the existing shared-table memo, there is no checked-in successful final-consumer regression, and two narrower path/documentation issues remain.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo has no fpm_parquet_path or aic_fpm_parquet_path consumer. Its AIC fields remain identity/configuration values only in components/src/dynamo/common/configuration/groups/aic_perf_args.py:12-40; aic_estimator.py:51-67 loads the bundled database by system/backend/version. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo pins aisimulate==0.12.0.dev2 in pyproject.toml:17, container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:5, and aisimulate-core==0.12.0-dev.2 in Cargo.toml:59. The feature therefore requires the deployed AISimulate wheel/core version to contain the new API. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The public API compatibility test pins the exact compile_engine signature in tests/cross_package/test_core_public_api.py:66-76. Adding fpm_parquet_path requires updating this signature contract. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The Rust loader derives the sidecar with parquet_path.with_extension("metadata.json") and validates schema version, identity, digest, and row count in aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/perf_database/fpm_forward.rs:327-475, matching the PR’s same-stem sidecar contract. crates/core/src/perfmodel/engine/runtime.rs (2)

2592-2603: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Test does not exercise a missing external file with a valid FPM shape.

external_fpm_rejects_invalid_specs_before_database_loading uses context_ops()/generation_ops(), the hand-built non-FPM op lists (no FpmForward op). For the "/missing/reviewed-fpm.parquet" case, shape_ok is false regardless of the path, so the error asserted here is "requires forward_model='fpm' ... exactly one FpmForward op per phase", not a file-not-found failure. The test name promises rejection of an invalid path "before database loading," but the missing-file scenario is never actually tested with a valid FPM op shape.

Add a case that builds a genuinely valid FPM spec (leading FpmForward op per phase) with a nonexistent fpm_parquet_path, and confirm it still fails loudly at Engine::from_spec_bytes.

crates/core/src/perfmodel/py.rs (2)

1324-1335: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Missing-path tests never pair a valid FPM shape with a nonexistent file.

Both builder_rejects_invalid_fpm_paths_before_entering_python and native_model_rejects_invalid_fpm_paths use ("/missing/fpm.parquet", "op_level") / an unset forward_model. validate_fpm_parquet_path rejects these because is_fpm is false, not because the file is missing. Neither test proves that a genuinely valid FPM spec with a missing external file fails before entering Python / before database loading.

crates/core/src/python.rs (2)

2243-2252: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Missing-path test pairs the nonexistent file with forward_model="op_level".

The "/missing/fpm.parquet" case in this loop uses model="op_level", so validate_fpm_parquet_path rejects it for shape mismatch, not for the missing file. Add a case with forward_model="fpm" and a spec-compatible shape to confirm a missing external file is rejected before Python compilation runs.

Request changes on 4a6717415a4a59da874f284820559d15cb031f53.

The primary external-parquet workflow works: the new synthetic pair drives real replay and CLI details without backend timing directories, invalid configurations are rejected, and the Rust and engine parity suites pass. Three verified findings remain, detailed in the inline comments.

Spec: two P1 findings

  • Accepted relative paths can select a different external dataset through cache reuse or lazy loading after a working-directory change. A dataset containing a 99 ms prefill returned 22 ms from another pair; its absolute-path control returned 99 ms.
  • The regular prefill/decode companion in an AFD+PD deployment accepts an external FPM path but drops it at its final estimator. This affects a companion explicitly configured for external FPM; the AFD attention/FFN workers themselves, pure AFD, and companions using op_level are unaffected.

Standards: one P2 finding

  • The intentional new compile_engine parameter is missing from the frozen public API signature expectation, causing test_stable_function_signatures to fail.

Independent validation on the reviewed head

Suite Result
cargo test -p aisimulate-core --features python 1,458 passed; 1 ignored
Config, runner, unified traffic, and sweeper tests 806 passed; 5 downstream integration cases skipped
FPM, memory, KV budget, and cross-package tests 258 passed; 1 failed, the signature contract
test_engine_step_parity.py and test_compile_engine_parity.py 383 passed; no golden changes

Both runtime defects were independently reproduced and reverified with synthetic external parquet/sidecar pairs. Those fixtures establish the input-selection and execution failures, not predictive accuracy against silicon. Tests ran locally on macOS ARM64 with CPython 3.12 and a native extension rebuilt from this commit; pytest used -p no:timeout as documented for macOS.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo’s AIC configuration and replay payloads expose backend, system, model, version, and parallelism fields, but no fpm_parquet_path/aic_fpm_parquet_path forwarding path. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The Rust callback builds AIC through AicEngineBuilder without an external parquet-path argument in lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/aic_callback.rs. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo pins aisimulate==0.12.0.dev2 and aisimulate-core==0.12.0-dev.2, with tests enforcing exact matching releases. External-FPM support therefore requires deploying the corresponding updated AISimulate wheel and crate together. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The frozen compatibility reference still defines compile_engine without fpm_parquet_path in aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/engine.py:358-392, and its exact-signature contract is enforced in tests/cross_package/test_core_public_api.py:66-76. Legacy consumers using this API cannot pass the new keyword until migrated.
  • Its Rust FPM loader derives the adjacent sidecar with parquet_path.with_extension("metadata.json") and validates identity, digest, schema, and row count, matching the PR’s external parquet/sidecar contract. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

88-88: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The linked test is not a cross-repository comparison. ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator/tests/cross_package/test_core_public_api.py imports its own aiconfigurator_core.sdk.engine.compile_engine, and pyproject.toml pins aiconfigurator-core==0.12.0. The local test belongs to the separate aisimulate distribution. Therefore, this AISimulate parameter does not cause the linked exact-signature test to fail, and the frozen compatibility contract does not need updating for this release.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • The Rust AIC callback constructs AicEngineBuilder with model, system, backend, versions, quantization, and parallelism, but does not set forward_model or fpm_parquet_path (lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/aic_callback.rs:150-205). [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Replay/config payloads expose aic_backend, aic_system, aic_backend_version, and aic_model_path, with no external FPM path field (components/src/dynamo/profiler/utils/replay_optimize/engine_args.py:27-31). [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo pins both aisimulate-core and aisimulate to 0.12.0 (Cargo.toml:58-59, pyproject.toml:17, container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:5). External-FPM support requires coordinated deployment of the updated AISimulate packages. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The compatibility reference’s compile_engine signature ends at forward_model and has no fpm_parquet_path parameter (aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/engine.py:358-383). Its exact-signature test enforces this older contract (tests/cross_package/test_core_public_api.py:66-76). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Its native AicEngineBuilder request likewise contains forward_model and systems_path, but no external FPM parquet-path field (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/py.rs:960-1045). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The existing FPM loader derives the required sidecar using parquet_path.with_extension("metadata.json") (aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/perf_database/fpm_forward.rs:450-485), matching the PR’s sidecar naming contract. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

3-3: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The SHA resolves to a valid commit, and the current sentinel values match the manifest at that commit. The available evidence does not establish that this is the intended baseline or that the sentinel runner reproduces the values, so the proposed stale-golden failure cannot be decided from the supplied evidence.

override—backend_version, pp, moe_tp_size, and moe_ep_size—is either applied
consistently to kwargs and compile_kwargs used by both compiled execution and
the legacy estimator, or explicitly rejected for AFD companions. Ensure
unsupported values fail loudly, and add coverage for non-default backend version
and parallelism overrides.

All identified review findings are addressed at 09e7ff7. The original path, companion execution, and API contract fixes are verified. Conflicting companion identity settings now fail before prediction, while matching settings remain accepted.

Validation: 296 focused Python tests passed, including real external-FPM companion replay for both phases. Changed-file and CI-scoped Ruff, formatting, and documentation checks passed. Required CI remains a separate merge gate.

Preserve external FPM inputs through the canonical estimator API and the aisimulate_core package move. Keep static integration for AFD+PD companions and preserve per-role paths through replay, recommendations, and cache identity.

Retain main's engine controls, diagnostics, and regression coverage while resolving the conflicts around removed bundled FPM data.
