Proposed changes

When attempting to add a user who is already a member of a room, the addUsersToRoom method previously completed successfully without changing any state, leading to misleading feedback on the client side.

User.added.even.when.existed.1.mp4

This change makes the server behavior explicit by throwing a proper Meteor.Error when the user is already in the room, ensuring the API response accurately reflects the operation result.

Solved.issue.1.mp4

Issue(s)

Closes #24701

Steps to test or reproduce

  1. Go to any room where you have permission to add users
  2. Open the Members panel
  3. Try adding a user who is already a member of the room
  4. Observe that the operation now fails with a proper error instead of silently succeeding

Further comments

This fix keeps the change minimal and server-side only, avoiding any API shape changes or UI redesign while improving correctness and consistency of the method behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevented users from being added to the same room more than once.
    • When attempting to add a user who is already a member, the action now returns an explicit error instead of a silent or duplicate notification.
    • Removed redundant internationalized broadcasting related to this flow.

Walkthrough

Reversed the subscription-existence handling in the server-side addUsersToRoom method: when a room subscription already exists the method now throws an error for duplicate users; when no subscription exists it proceeds to call addUserToRoom. i18n broadcast logic was removed.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Subscription validation logic
apps/meteor/app/lib/server/methods/addUsersToRoom.ts
Inverted conditional: existing subscription now raises a Meteor.Error for duplicate user; absent subscription proceeds to call addUserToRoom. Removed i18n broadcast/notification code paths.

Found a duplicate path led folks astray,
Now when a member's already in the room,
I raise a clear error — no more gloom! 🥕

No explicit cleanup is needed in the reject branch of handleInvite() because the leave event handler takes care of it.

97-105: LGTM! Critical bug fixed, logic is correct.

The implementation correctly addresses the PR objective:

  • Throws an explicit error when attempting to add a user who already has a subscription (lines 97-103)
  • Calls addUserToRoom when no subscription exists (line 105)
  • The past critical issue (missing addUserToRoom call) has been resolved

The duplicate subscription check here is intentional and beneficial—it provides clear error feedback to the caller rather than the silent early return that would occur inside addUserToRoom.

P0: Critical bug: `addUserToRoom` call is missing. The change removes the actual logic to add users to rooms. When a user is not already in the room, the code now skips adding them entirely and incorrectly broadcasts a message saying they're already there. The fix should add `return addUserToRoom(data.rid, newUser, user);` after the error-throwing block.</violation>

99-116: Critical: Logic is inverted and users are never added to rooms.

The current implementation has two critical defects:

  1. Missing addUserToRoom call: When a user is NOT in the room (!subscription), the code should call addUserToRoom(data.rid, newUser) to actually add them. This call is completely absent, breaking the core functionality.

  2. Wrong ephemeral message: Lines 110-116 broadcast "Username_is_already_in_here" when the subscription check fails (i.e., when the user is NOT in the room). This message should only be shown when the user IS already in the room.

🔎 Proposed fix with correct control flow
