Frequently Asked Questions
FP7 OpenIoT is a research project co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Framework programme.
FP7 OpenIoT is developing the OpenIoT open source project, which includes:
- A middleware platform for Internet-of-Things Services in the cloud,
- A range of tools supporting (almost) zero programming development of IoT services.
OpenIoT is developed and maintained by the OpenIoT Consortium, which includes seven EU organizations and one Australian research center.
- Students and researchers interested in experiments with Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications and services.
- IoT solution providers and integrators, wishing to use OpenIoT for developing IoT solutions.
- Open Source entusiasts(members of the IoT open source community), wishing to use and/or contribute to OpenIoT.
OpenIoT supports virtually any kind of sensor, through the Virtual Sensor (VS) concept of the Global Sensor Networks (GSN) open source project. The integration of a sensor within OpenIoT is based on its description and implementation as a GSN Virtual Sensor i.e. minimal integration effort is required.
- Sensors in OpenIoT are described based according to the Semantic Sensor Networks ontology of the W3C SSN Incubator Group.
Why OpenIoT is released under LGPL version 3.0 license?
LGPL version 3.0 has been selected as a popular business friendly license, which could encourage the use of later versions of the OpenIoT platform by enterprises.
