Description

Adds a Claude Code skill, trtllm-serve-model-harness. It supports a model x agent-harness pair on trtllm-serve (for example Codex, Claude Code or pi in front of a self-hosted model) and proves the pair works from recorded traffic.

Why. When an agent harness runs against a self-hosted model, the expensive serving bugs are mostly harness-contract bugs, not model bugs:

  • a custom tool delivered as a function, so the harness aborts its tool results;
  • a field the harness always sends, rejected by the server;
  • an HTTP 400 where the harness needs an in-stream failure, so it resends forever;
  • long silences during prefill, so the client cuts the stream.

Each is cheap to fix once seen. Each can be found without production scale, given the right inputs and the right checks. The skill packages those inputs and checks.

What it contains. Everything is under .claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/; nothing outside it changes.

  • SKILL.md: the procedure.
    • A cell is a model profile paired with a harness profile.
    • Stages, each with an exit gate:
      • S0: the harness's contract;
      • S1: adapting renderers, parsers and stop rules;
      • S2: regression replay;
      • S3: per-turn replay;
      • S4: real harness sessions on local tasks;
      • S5: a large run.
    • An outer loop drives a cell to PASS.
    • A fast path covers pairs whose renderer and parsers already exist.
    • Fixed rules: fail closed; no result without a verdict; never print trace content; prove what served with a build id.
  • A validator (scripts/validate/). It issues fail-closed verdicts on five claims over Responses, Anthropic Messages and Chat Completions traffic recorded in front of trtllm-serve: inventory, conformance, runtime, model behavior and harness outcome. It:
    • reads every reply a second time with the official openai and anthropic SDKs;
    • compares the delivered output with the model's raw output, read in the model's own format;
    • checks usage accounting;
    • bounds each rate with a one-sided Wilson interval against the thresholds the run sets.
  • Profiles as data (profiles/).
    • What the validator knows about a model: markers, special and degenerate tokens, parsers, renderer.
    • What it knows about a harness: protocol, identity keys, outcome strings, timeouts, rewrites it applies to what it sends back.
    • Adding a model or a harness means adding a profile, plus a contract for a harness. Code is needed only for a new output format or a new echo rewrite.
    • The shipped profiles are examples: GLM-5.x, Kimi-K3, DeepSeek-V4.1 and Qwen3; Codex, Claude Code and pi.
  • Capture and replay tools. A recording proxy with per-chunk timing and build ids, capture summaries, a parser fault matrix, chunk equivalence, a replay corpus with its replayer, a long-context recall probe, and a check that the served checkpoint's renders read back (native_goldens.py --check).
  • Harness runners.
    • Session runners for Codex, Claude Code and pi, each under env -i with an isolated configuration.
    • A pi kit that runs real pi sessions on local tasks, each in a throwaway container (no GPU, no network, no credentials) with its own recorder.
    • The skill ships no sandbox for other harnesses. references/smoke.md section 0 states what a sandbox must meet and how to check it, and the agent running the skill prepares one. The runners isolate configuration, environment and temporary files, which is enough for wiring runs against the fake servers.
  • tasks/. Eight small synthetic tasks for real harness runs, in every runner's format.
  • profiles/model/serving/. Complete serving configs, with their serve commands, for the shipped models.
  • scripts/compose_trial_build.sh. Builds the build under test as a base plus open PRs, one commit per item, with a provenance record.
  • references/verify-logic.md and scripts/mutate.py. Verify a fix to pure Python logic (a parser, a protocol path) by a property over generated inputs, gated by planted bugs.

Usable from the skill alone. A fresh agent ran the skill on a clean machine with no traces and no other material. Without a GPU, it set up the validator, ran the tests and the control matrix, wired Codex and Claude Code to the fake servers through the recorder, and judged the traces. It also listed what would still stop a newcomer from reaching a passing cell, and this PR fixes those gaps:

  • the Codex profile's measured echo;
  • the capture PRs named by number;
  • starting thresholds with the units each one needs;
  • complete serving configs and a task set;
  • the claims a wiring run must pass;
  • a full-tier report template;
  • trace readers that fail closed on a damaged shard.

A second blind run on the result found more, also fixed here:

  • Codex's own sandbox failing inside a container, invisible in the trace: the runner now counts it and exits 3;
  • the runners now give each session its own TMPDIR;
  • the sandbox requirements above;
  • native_goldens.py --check for the checkpoint being served;
  • a recall probe;
  • an over-length probe that exercises C-10 and H-04;
  • trial builds from a fork clone, with each item's state checked first;
  • the open PRs the shipped cells ran with, named in their profiles and contracts.

A third run, by Codex (gpt-6-astra) instead of Claude Code, worked through the same steps. It
found that Codex does not look in .claude/skills, so SKILL.md now says how any agent runs it
and where Codex finds skills. It also found two fail-open spots, now fixed:

  • the session runners exited 0 whatever their sessions did;
  • native_goldens.py --check passed with nothing to check.

The skill follows the naming convention in .claude/README.md (trtllm- prefix). It adds no runtime code, no dependency of the package and no CI job; the validator runs in its own environment (scripts/validate/requirements.txt).

The procedure and the validator were used end to end on GLM-5.3, Kimi-K3 and DeepSeek-V4.1, each with Codex, Claude Code and pi, across the three protocols. Serving defects found on the way went to separate PRs, e.g. #21030, #21449, #21450, #21452, #21468, #21479.

Test Coverage

The skill carries its own CPU-only tests. They run in the validator's environment and are not part of CI.

  • tests/ (validator, recorder, tools): 163 passed, 1 skipped. The skipped test is the full control matrix, which runs with MH_RUN_CONTROLS=1.
  • The control matrix (scripts/validate/controls.py): 263 of 263 cases pass. They are positive and negative controls over all three protocols, and the receipt is bound to the validator's tree hash.
  • tests/test_validator_properties.py with its mutation gate (tests/validator_properties.mutations, run by scripts/mutate.py): the baseline is green and 62 of 62 planted bugs are detected.
  • pre-commit passes on every file, including the skill naming check.

Dev Engineer Review

  • Adds a profile-driven workflow to evaluate model–harness pairs served by trtllm-serve across Responses, Anthropic Messages, and Chat Completions. The 133 added files include protocol validators, recording and replay tools, evidence and verdict checks, model and harness profiles, session runners, trial-build tooling, and synthetic tasks.
  • The change adds no serving runtime code or CI job. Validator dependencies are isolated in scripts/validate/requirements.txt.
  • The validator uses fail-closed verdicts when evidence is missing. The credential scanner retains hits read before a shard error, reports them, and can restrict matching files.
  • The supplied context reports 163 tests passed and 1 skipped, 263 of 263 control cases passed, 62 of 62 planted bugs detected, and pre-commit passing. These are author-reported checks, not independently verified here.

QA Engineer Review

  • Adds tooling tests in tests/test_record_requests.py, tests/test_tools.py, tests/test_validator.py, and tests/test_validator_properties.py, plus native-format golden fixtures and mutation cases. It also adds synthetic task workspaces with their own test files.
  • No files changed under tests/integration/test_lists/. The skill tests are outside the repository’s integration test lists; no CI or manual-QA list entries were added.
  • Tests cover recorder outcomes and permissions; replay, session runners, mutation gates, and recall probes; protocol parsing and verdicts; shard integrity and credential scanning; and validator properties. The optional control-matrix test requires MH_RUN_CONTROLS=1.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The supplied context reports broad CPU-only coverage, but these tests are not registered in the integration test lists, and their results were not independently verified.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • .claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/SKILL.md: Defines stages, verdict rules, and repair limits. Verify stage exits and cell status against validator behavior.

  • scripts/pi_kit/measure/cases.tsv, scripts/pi_kit/tasks/tasks.tsv, and tasks/*.tsv: Add measurement and task selections. Verify case and task entries remain aligned with their prompts and runners.

…and controls

A validator for recorded agent-harness traffic against trtllm-serve. It
issues fail-closed verdicts per (model, harness) cell over Responses,
Anthropic Messages and Chat Completions: inventory, conformance, runtime,
model behavior and harness outcome.

- scripts/validate/: verdict.py and its checks; a second reading of every
  reply with the official SDKs; the model's raw output read in its own
  format; usage rules; fake servers for wiring and for measuring a harness.
- profiles/: models and harnesses as data. The shipped profiles are
  examples; the checks name no specific model or harness.
- A control matrix (263 cases) bound to the validator tree, and property
  tests with a mutation gate (references/verify-logic.md, scripts/mutate.py).
- references/: claims, checks, wire rules, the turn IR and the controls.

Tests: 61 passed, 1 skipped. Controls: 263 of 263.

… capture tools

The skill itself: how to support a model x agent-harness pair on
trtllm-serve and prove it, stage by stage (S0 contract, S1 adapt, S2
regress, S3 replay, S4 smoke, S5 a large run), with an outer loop that
drives a cell to PASS and rules that are not negotiable (fail closed, no
result without a verdict, never print trace content).

- SKILL.md: the matrix, roles, stages and exit gates, the fast path for a
  pair whose layers already exist, the loop, the map of files. Adding a
  model or a harness is adding a profile and, for a harness, a contract.
- references/: capturing a harness's contract, adapting renderers and
  parsers (with a fault catalog), replay, smoke runs and the build under
  test.
- contracts/: the shipped harness contracts and a template.
- scripts/: the request recorder, capture summary, fault matrix, chunk
  equivalence, replay corpus and count_tokens probe.

…and trial builds

- scripts/run_{codex,claude,pi}_sessions.sh: session runners for the
  shipped harnesses, each under env -i with its own configuration, for
  wiring runs against the fake servers.
- scripts/pi_kit/: pi sessions on local tasks, one throwaway container
  (no GPU, no network, no credentials) and one recorder per session, with
  run/resume/stop/status, model presets that map pi's thinking level onto
  each model's effort setting, and pi's measurement cases. It is an example
  of a kit for a harness that no hosted platform runs.
- scripts/compose_trial_build.sh: the build under test, a base plus open
  PRs and the capture changes, one commit per item, with a provenance file.

- build_replay_corpus.py: --reasoning strip-encrypted keeps Chat
  reasoning_content/reasoning; only drop removes them.
- compose_trial_build.sh: the worktree and provenance paths are made
  absolute against the caller's directory before the script enters the
  worktree.
- pi kit: refuse a run dir too deep for the sessions' unix sockets; count
  a capture's requests from what was appended since the last refresh; run
  docker in a worker thread so the relays keep moving.
- pi kit measure/summarize.py: a case without a final assistant message no
  longer stops RESULTS.md.
- record_requests.py, replay_requests.py: captures and replays are owner
  only (0600 files, 0700 directory when created).
- replay_requests.py: a reply cut by --timeout is client_timeout, not a
  first-event timeout.
- check_stream.py: unparsable_event is a check (FAIL), not only a count.
- harness_signals.py: a named file that is not a requests-/responses-
  shard is an error, not a traceback.
- tracelib.sse_events reads CRLF framing as sse_frames does.
- requirements.txt: pin httpx2 (the anthropic SDK's transport); aiohttp
  3.13.5 -> 3.14.5 for its published advisories.

Tests: tests/test_tools.py (new), plus additions to test_validator.py and
test_record_requests.py. Each new test fails on the previous code.

…y as the text allows

Argument markup that closes a value and writes whole arguments after it is, in
the text, those arguments, so no reader can tell it from a model that wrote
them. The property now holds that a value with markup is flagged or not read
back as itself, which still fails both of the native reader's mutations.

- verdict.py: thresholds_from names the matrix file and the SHA-256 of
  the bytes its thresholds were read from (profiles.load_thresholds
  returns both), as validate.md documents.
- protocol_diff.py: request_equal.turns leaves the tools as written out,
  so it compares the turns only.
- scan_credentials.py: a .zst file that is not zstd is reported in its
  own row; the scan goes on.
- mutate.py: --timeout (default 600 s) per mutated run; a run that does
  not end counts as DETECTED and the file is restored.
- build_replay_corpus.py: the corpus is written owner only (0600).
- references: the control-matrix commands both run from the repository
  root; the replay example takes --first-event-timeout from the harness
  profile; validate.md says what thresholds_from binds.

Tests: five new tests in test_tools.py and test_validator.py; each fails
on the previous code.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Bind an L3 replay verdict to the served build.

This command produces replay records without build_id, and it does not declare --build-id to verdict.py. With neither value present, the validator can mark inventory PASS without checking which build served L3. That conflicts with the S3 inventory gate and the workflow's process-identity rule. Add build identity to the replay records and pass the independently declared build ID to the verdict. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…; sturdier session runners

Found by a newcomer's run of the skill on a clean machine:
- tracelib reads a truncated .zst or .gz shard, or a cut last line, as a
  shorter shard without an error. It now raises an error naming the file,
  and harness_signals.py, summarize_capture.py and build_replay_corpus.py
  read through it. check_stream.py exits 2 when it judged nothing.
- build_replay_corpus.py writes the corpus under a temporary name and
  renames it once complete, so a run that stops leaves no partial corpus.
- The session runners take relative paths, skip blank and '#' lines in the
  tasks file, and run every harness under env -i (the Codex runner did
  not), passing proxy variables through only when they are set.
- The degenerate-run property pins its boundary cases as explicit examples,
  so the mutation gate detects the reply-without-terminal bug every run.

Every new test fails on the old code by assertion. Skill tests: 99 passed,
1 skipped. Controls: 263 of 263.

…arness runs

Eight small synthetic tasks (plain Python and shell, no network, no GPU)
for S4 sessions of any harness: several tool calls in a turn, failing
commands, a missing file, long outputs read in parts, edits across files,
tests, an answer computed from what was read, and one task long enough to
reach compaction with a small context window. tasks.tsv is in the pi kit's
format and runner_tasks.tsv in the session runners'. Nothing grades the
tasks; the validator judges the traffic.

…h a verdict

A run of the skill on a clean machine, from the skill alone, could not
reach a passing cell. This adds what it missed:
- The Codex default profile's echo is measured (exact: codex-cli 0.155.1,
  12 sessions against the fake server). Conformance was BLOCKED on it. The
  contract template now asks for echo.
- The capture changes are named by PR (NVIDIA#21605, NVIDIA#21602, NVIDIA#20936), with where to
  get a wheel that matches the base and which CPU suites to run.
- The wiring snippets use absolute paths, create their task, pass --build-id
  and --matrix, and state which claims a wiring run must pass.
- The real run has a full serve command with the recorder in front, and
  profiles/model/serving/ holds complete configs for GLM-5.3-NVFP4 and
  DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash as their cells were served.
- The matrix template proposes starting thresholds, lists the units each
  threshold needs, drops keys the verdict never reads, and names cell
  directories.
- templates/full-tier-report.md: the full tier's steps and the five files it
  writes.
- Smaller additions: restricting egress, a harness's own sandbox inside a
  container, Codex over-length on main (PR NVIDIA#21060), where the GLM goldens
  came from, test and gate hygiene, and the controls receipt command.

PR_Github #82457 [ run ] completed with state SUCCESS. Commit: 1688c76
/LLM/main/L0_MergeRequest_PR pipeline #68066 completed with status: 'SUCCESS'
Pipeline passed with automatic retried tests. Check the rerun report for details.

- compose_trial_build.sh: the default provenance path replaces a branch's
  "/" with "_". A branch such as user/trial lost the provenance file and
  reported a false CONFLICT.
- turnlib._canonical keeps JSON integers exact and maps only integral
  floats to integers. A 400-digit integer in call arguments no longer stops
  the verdict, and integers above 2**53 no longer compare equal to their
  neighbours.
- SKILL.md: the fast path's S1 row no longer claims prompt fidelity is
  covered; no check compares the served render with the encoder's.
- summarize_capture.py: the docstring lists every header whose values are
  kept.

Each new test fails on the previous code.

catch ShardError from shard loading and report the damaged trace as inconclusive
with exit status 2, while preserving existing exit behavior for other outcomes.
Import ShardError from tracelib so the handler catches the same exception raised
by iter_lines.

…ck_tool_calls and protocol_diff inconclusive

A cut or corrupt .zst/.gz shard, or a cut last line, raised ShardError
out of both scripts, which then exited 1: "a check FAILs" for
check_tool_calls.py and "a server-side difference" for protocol_diff.py.
Both now stop with a message naming the shard, write no report and exit
2, the status each script uses for nothing judged / not conclusive, as
check_stream.py already does. The pool path of check_tool_calls.py
re-raises the worker's ShardError in the parent, so it is caught too.

.claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/mutate.py:106-119
Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Fail the mutation gate when the baseline fails.

baseline_clean changes only the printed note and the detected rule. The final return ignores it. A run with a failing baseline can print SUMMARY: N DETECTED, 0 MISSED and exit 0. verify-logic.md says a failing baseline makes DETECTED meaningless, and validate.md says a property counts only with its gate.

Suggested fix

-    return 1 if missed else 0
+ return 1 if missed or not baseline_clean else 0

.claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/record_requests.py:155-219
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Judge overridden runs against the forwarded request, not the recorded body.

record_requests.py stores the original body and forwards a modified one when --override is set. The validators and verdict checks read only the recorded body. With --override stream=true, the pipeline judges the reply using request.stream taken from the original request. The check at pipeline.py:861-863 can then flag a correct streamed reply as a violation. A tools override can cause the same mismatch in check_tool_calls.py, which judges calls against the recorded declarations.

The documented override is temperature=0, and no validator reads that field. The mismatch needs overrides of stream, tools, or max_tokens. Overridden runs that use those fields can receive false conformance verdicts.

Build the request view for conformance from the effective body: the recorded body with forwarded_overrides applied. Alternatively, mark overridden runs as not comparable to the original harness.

Minor · Normalize CRLF before detecting the first SSE event. · replay_requests.py:75-168

.claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/replay_requests.py:75-168
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Normalize CRLF before detecting the first SSE event.

The configured endpoint can return valid SSE with a \r\n\r\n frame terminator. The current b"\n\n" check does not match that terminator. first_event remains unset, so asyncio.wait_for can record client_first_event_timeout for a healthy stream.

Minor · Fault rows in run_controls.sh accept unexpected extra FAIL verdicts. · run_controls.sh:49-68

.claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/validate/run_controls.sh:49-68
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Fault rows in run_controls.sh accept unexpected extra FAIL verdicts.

The fault-row check at line 62 uses expected <= failed. It passes when the named check appears, even if other checks also fail. The header comment and acceptance-cases.md (section 0) require that a fault mode trip its expected set and nothing outside it. A fault-specific over-trigger can therefore print OK and pass the calibration gate.

Making the comparison exact also requires each EXPECT row to list its declared consequences first. For example, delta_differs also trips done_item_mismatch, so an exact comparison would otherwise report BAD for a correct fault mode.

Suggested fix

-ok = expected <= failed and (want != "-" or not failed)
+ok = failed == expected

Update the EXPECT rows to include the declared consequences before applying this change.

…s renders

native_goldens.py --check renders the synthetic cases with the encoder of
the checkpoint being served, reads every render back with its model
profile's own reader, and compares it with the shipped goldens. It writes
nothing, prints each encoder file's template_sha256 (the first 16 hex
digits of its SHA-256, as model profiles record it), and exits 1 when a
render does not read back exactly. A newcomer serving a checkpoint whose
template hash the profile does not list can now qualify the raw view (C-13)
on CPU before any run; --out keeps writing goldens as before.

Locally: GLM-5.3, GLM-5.3-Flash, GLM-5.3-Flash-NVFP4, Kimi-K3 and
DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash each read back 5 of 5, equal to the shipped goldens.

tracelib's docstring now names the writers of the request-trace layout it
reads (the recorder and the replay tool), not a server-side writer that is
not on main.

Validator-owned files: controls re-run, 263 of 263 on the new tree.

… run found

A second blind run of the skill (a fresh agent, the skill alone, no GPU)
found what still kept a newcomer from a verdict on GLM-5.3 x Codex:

- Session runners: every session gets its own TMPDIR under `env -i`, so
  Codex and Claude Code keep their temporary files in the session's
  directory instead of /tmp. The Codex runner counts, per session, the
  commands its sandbox could not start (`bwrap: ` in events.jsonl) and
  exits 3 with a warning when any session had one or panicked (exit 101):
  the trace cannot show it, since the failed commands go back to the model
  as ordinary tool results. Headers no longer point at a server-side trace
  writer that is not on main.
- scripts/probe_recall.py: the long-context recall probe smoke.md asks for
  before any agent run, over Chat Completions or Messages, one line per
  probe and never the model's answer.
- smoke.md: a wiring row for the harness side and where wiring evidence
  goes; an over-length probe that exercises C-10 and H-04 (a max_seq_len
  above the opening prompt, the harness's window far above it, t05); the
  recall probe with GLM-5.3's sizes; the trial build's -r/-m for a fork

- SKILL.md: what a profile's status means; on your own, you are the human,

- Profiles and contracts: the GLM profile names the merged parser fixes and

…ent's to prepare

The skill cannot ship a sandbox for every harness and host, so smoke.md
section 0 now states what a sandbox must meet instead: disposable; nothing
of the user's; a fresh configuration home per session; no real credential
in the agent's environment; network to the endpoint only, through the
recorder; the harness's tools working inside it (its own sandbox working
or turned off); temporary files in the session's directory; limits and no
GPU; the recorder and the trace outside it. It says how to check a sandbox
before a real run, and what the session runners do and do not isolate:
they suffice for wiring runs against the fake servers, not for a real
model's sessions.

The contract template asks each harness's contract for what the sandbox
needs from it: where it keeps configuration, credentials and temporary
files, its own sandbox and how to turn it off, and the hosts it calls on
its own. SKILL.md's S4 row points at section 0.

…s and the S5 verdict's matrix

The Claude Code and pi wiring examples started a recorder on port 8397
while the Codex example's still held it, so their traffic reached the
earlier recorder and fake server, and all three wrote into one run
directory. Each example now uses a fresh run directory, starts its own
fake server and recorder, and stops them by PID at the end. The S5
fast verdict also reads the run's matrix, without which its rate checks
are blocked as unset.

…route, and reads CRLF streams

An S3 replay wrote no build_id and its verdict declared none, so its
inventory could pass without showing which build answered.
replay_requests.py now takes --build-id and writes it into every
record, as the recorder does, and the L3 commands pass the same id to
the verdict. They also name the corpus builder's --route, which
defaults to /v1/responses and so left no corpus for a Messages or Chat
run. The replay found a stream's first event only on LF framing; a
CRLF-framed stream now has its first event too, instead of a false
first-event timeout.

…s list with no size

An empty or comma-only --sizes made probe_recall.py send no request and
exit 0, as if every probe had recalled. A list without a positive size
is now a usage error (exit 2).

…utput directory in use

The Claude Code, Codex and pi runners created their session directories
with mkdir -p, so a rerun into an earlier run's output directory kept
that run's workspace and home files (and pi's agent and session state)
and could hand them to the new sessions, while the reset sessions.tsv
hid the mix. Each runner now exits 2 before starting a session when its
output directory is not empty.

…a render unlike the shipped one

--check qualifies the reader on the served checkpoint's own renders and
fails a render that does not read back exactly. A render that reads back
but differs from the shipped golden was only counted. It is now named
(DIFFERS), and the docstring says why it passes: the shipped goldens pin
the reader, not a checkpoint.

…ss on a failing baseline

mutate.py noted a failing baseline but still exited 0 when every
mutation counted as detected, though with a failing baseline a
detection proves nothing. It now exits 1 then, and says why.

…ng fields only

record_requests.py --override forwarded a changed body while recording
the harness's, and every check reads the recorded body, so an override
of stream, tools or max_tokens would judge a reply against a request
the server never received. --override now takes sampling fields only
(temperature, top_p, top_k, min_p, seed and the penalties), which no
check reads; other fields are a usage error.

…ult to exactly its expected set

A fault row passed when its named check was among the failures, even
with other checks failing too, while the acceptance cases require a
fault to trip its expected set and nothing outside it. Each row now
lists the fault's check and its declared consequences (delta_differs
also trips done_item_mismatch), and the failed set must equal it. On a
synthetic corpus every row is OK.

…othing fails

native_goldens.py --check with no checkpoint exited 0 after checking zero
renders, so a check that never ran read as a pass (found by a run of the
skill from Codex). It now refuses to run without a checkpoint (usage error,
exit 2), and check() returns 1 when it has no render to read back.

@coderabbitai On the four outside-diff comments in the review of 891b90e, all of them still valid on the round-2 head:

  • scripts/mutate.py, exit status with a failing baseline: fixed in 0b466c4. With a failing baseline the gate now exits 1 and says that no DETECTED proves anything; the docstring's exit codes say so too. test_a_gate_on_a_failing_baseline_does_not_pass covers it.
  • scripts/record_requests.py, --override judged against the recorded body: fixed in 5935869 by restricting what can be overridden rather than changing every reader. --override now takes sampling fields only (temperature, top_p, top_k, min_p, seed and the penalties). No check reads those fields, so the recorded body still states what each reply is judged against. stream, tools, max_tokens or any other field is a usage error. The documented use, temperature=0 for the protocol differential, is unchanged.
  • scripts/replay_requests.py, CRLF framing: fixed in 6a80652. The first event is now found on LF or CRLF framing, and test_a_replay_finds_the_first_event_of_a_crlf_stream covers it.
  • scripts/validate/run_controls.sh, extra FAIL verdicts on fault rows: fixed in 5e18451. Each row lists the fault's check and its declared consequences (delta_differs: delta_done_mismatch,done_item_mismatch), and the failed set must equal it. On a synthetic corpus all nine rows are OK, and the old single-check row for delta_differs now reports BAD.

…Codex found

The skill was run end to end, without a GPU, by Codex (gpt-6-astra) instead
of Claude Code. Fixed here:

- The session runners exited 0 whatever their sessions did. They now exit
  1 when any session exited non-zero (the Codex runner's exit 3 for a
  sandbox that never started comes first); every session still runs and
  is recorded in sessions.tsv.
- SKILL.md no longer assumes Claude Code: any agent with a shell and Python
  can run it; Codex finds skills in ~/.codex/skills and the repository's
  .codex/skills, not .claude/skills, so point it at SKILL.md; the outer
  loop waits on jobs with whatever the agent has, /loop being Claude
  Code's; the validator may be a sub-agent.
- SKILL.md says creating the validator environment needs the package
  index once, that the trial-build tests make throwaway repositories and
  touch no checkout, and that the mutation gate runs on a copy when
  another agent may work in the same checkout.
- smoke.md says why a run directory sits outside the repository: a harness
  started inside a checkout reads its AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md into its
  prompt.
- The Codex contract says `codex exec` needs `< /dev/null` from a script,
  or it waits on standard input.

@JunyiXu-nv Thanks. I inspected the four fixes at head 4c2b5e56. The code addresses all four reported concerns.

  • scripts/mutate.py: A failing baseline forces exit status 1, even when mutations print DETECTED. The final message states that those detections prove nothing. The exit-code documentation agrees.
  • scripts/record_requests.py: parse_overrides() accepts only the sampling-field allowlist. Other fields raise ValueError, which the CLI converts to a usage error. temperature=0 remains supported.
  • scripts/replay_requests.py: First-event detection normalizes CRLF to LF before checking the frame delimiter. The accumulated buffer also preserves delimiters split across received chunks.
  • scripts/validate/run_controls.sh: The actual FAIL set must equal the expected set. The delta_differs row includes both delta_done_mismatch and done_item_mismatch. Extra failures now produce BAD.

I also inspected the failing-baseline, override-restriction, and CRLF regression assertions. I did not run tests or the nine-row control matrix, so I have not independently verified the reported runtime results.

Check the source copy and record its failure in the session row.

The copy on line 90 ignores its status. When the source is missing or only partly copied, Claude still runs in workspace/. If Claude then exits 0, line 105 records success and the runner exits 0. The copy error reaches only the runner's console, not sessions.tsv or the session's stderr.log.

Fail the Codex session when copying its source fails.

…only when it examined a stream

check_stream.py blocks every check when no Responses stream reached it,
and a control row compared FAIL verdicts only, so a row whose replay
produced no stream (no reply, or none streamed) passed the ok and
overlength rows without testing them. A row now needs at least one
examined stream, and overlength a response.failed terminal event; each
row prints how many streams it examined.

The Claude Code, Codex and pi runners ignored the status of copying a
task's source into the session workspace, so a missing or partly copied
source still started the harness, and a harness that exited 0 recorded
the session as a success. A failed copy now records the session with
exit code 1, writes the reason into its stderr.log, and starts no

In each runner a failed copy now writes the reason into the session's stderr.log, records the session with exit code 1 (and 0 sandbox failures for Codex), and starts no harness. The runner then reports the run as failed, as it does for any session that exits non-zero. Each runner's header documents this, and test_a_session_whose_source_cannot_be_copied_is_not_started checks all three with a missing source directory: no harness started, a row with exit 1, and the reason in stderr.log.

@JunyiXu-nv Thanks. I inspected head 3784834e. The code addresses all three source-copy findings.

  • Each runner checks the copy result and returns before harness startup if the copy fails.
  • Each runner preserves the copy error in stderr.log and records session exit code 1 in sessions.tsv.
  • Codex records 0 sandbox failures for this case.
  • Each runner’s final status check treats the recorded copy failure as a failed run. The headers document this behavior.

test_a_session_whose_source_cannot_be_copied_is_not_started covers all three runners. It asserts that no harness starts, the session row records exit code 1, and stderr.log contains the reason.

I inspected the test but did not run it.

Learning: Within repository "NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM", only for files matching one of [".claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/run_claude_sessions.sh",".claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/run_codex_sessions.sh",".claude/skills/trtllm-serve-model-harness/scripts/run_pi_sessions.sh"]: When reviewing task-source copying in these session runners, verify that a failed copy prevents harness startup, preserves the copy error and a diagnostic in the session's stderr.log, records session exit code 1 in sessions.tsv (with zero sandbox failures for Codex), and causes the overall run to fail. The source value '-' intentionally selects an empty workspace and must bypass copying.
