[None][feat] Responses: name the engine request behind each reply - #21602
A /v1/responses reply is named resp_<random hex>, so nothing in it ties the reply to the server's log lines, perf metrics or post-processor hook records (--post_processor_hook) for the same request, which name it by the engine's request id. A streamed Chat Completions reply already carries that id (chatcmpl-<engine request id>), and #20936 does the same for Anthropic Messages; a Responses reply has nothing to match on. In disaggregated serving the engine request id would not be enough either: each worker numbers its own engine requests, so the same id names different requests on different workers.
What this change does:
trtllm-serve: the Responses route sends the engine's request id in a new response header, x-trtllm-engine-request-id: <engine request id>, on the streamed and the non-streamed reply. Every executor gives a request its id when it accepts it, so the header is always sent. The reply body, its id included, is unchanged.
Disaggregated server: when it assigns a request its disaggregated request id, before any worker sees the request, it names a Responses request resp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex> (the request's request_id, under which a worker answers). The disaggregated request id is unique across the deployment, and the per-request perf metrics of the disaggregated server and of both workers carry it, next to each worker's own engine request id.
Both the context and the generation worker are sent that name, so the reply carries it whichever worker answers. Today a generated request_id is not forwarded (unset fields are left out of the forwarded body), so each worker makes up its own.
The random part keeps the name unique should a disaggregated request id repeat.
The name is given once: a retried context request that gets a new disaggregated request id keeps it.
A request_id the client set is kept. Chat Completions, Completions and Messages requests are not touched.
The aggregated reply gets a header rather than an id like resp_<engine request id>_<hex> (as #20936 names Messages) because a Responses id is fixed before the engine assigns its id: the route stores the request's input messages under it for previous_response_id, the streaming processor keys its state by it, and a postprocessing worker gets a copy of the request when it is submitted. Renaming the reply afterwards would break the stored conversation chain; the header leaves the id alone.
Behaviour changes:
/v1/responses replies of trtllm-serve carry the new x-trtllm-engine-request-id response header. Clients that do not know it ignore it.
On a disaggregated server, a Responses reply id changes from resp_<32 hex> to resp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex>. It is still an opaque, unique resp_ id. The disaggregated server does not forward worker response headers, so the generation worker's header does not reach clients there; the reply id names the request instead.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_engine_request_id.py (new, CPU, added to l0_cpu.yml):
test_a_reply_names_its_engine_request_in_a_header[non_streaming], [streaming]: through the /v1/responses route of a server built by make_stub_openai_server, a reply whose generation has engine request id 42 carries x-trtllm-engine-request-id: 42.
tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_service.py (CPU, already in l0_cpu.yml through unittest/disaggregated):
test_only_a_responses_reply_is_named_after_the_disagg_request_id[context_first], [generation_first]: through OpenAIDisaggregatedService.openai_responses and openai_chat_completion, with stubbed context and generation clients that parse the forwarded body as a worker does and answer under the request_id they parsed. Two Responses requests with disaggregated request id 101 come back as resp_101_<16 hex> under different names, and the context worker is sent the same names; a Responses request with a client-set request_id keeps it; a chat reply keeps the generation worker's own id.
test_a_streamed_responses_reply_is_named_after_the_disagg_request_id[context_first], [generation_first]: a streamed Responses request opens with a response.created event named resp_101_<16 hex>, the name both workers are sent.
All six fail on main by assertion (no header; resp_<32 hex> instead of resp_101_<16 hex>) and pass with this change. Run on CPU against a checkout without compiled extensions, over the Responses, serve and disaggregated test files that reach these routes plus the new ones (2038 tests): main and this branch have the same one failure and one collection error, both for want of model files (LLM_MODELS_ROOT unset); the six new tests are the whole difference. Removing the header, the header on either reply, the rename, either of its two call sites, the client-set check, the Responses-only check or the random part each makes the new tests fail.
The stub promises of test_responses_usage.py, test_responses_streaming_events.py and test_disagg_responses_api.py carry a request_id, as a real RequestOutput does.
Docs: the header is described in the trtllm-serve Responses API section, the disaggregated reply id format and the unforwarded worker headers in the Responses API section of docs/source/features/disagg-serving.md, and both in a release-note line.

/v1/responses replies from trtllm-serve now include x-trtllm-engine-request-id for streamed and non-streamed responses. Disaggregated Responses requests receive a resp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex> ID before worker dispatch when the client does not provide a request_id. The change preserves client-supplied IDs and leaves other request types unchanged. Both workers receive the same generated ID.
Disaggregated serving does not forward worker response headers. The documentation describes the response-ID behavior, retry considerations, and header limitation. No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable.
The author reports that six new CPU tests pass on this branch and fail on main. In the reported 2,038-test CPU run, both branches had one failure and one collection error due to missing model files while LLM_MODELS_ROOT was unset. CI completion status is unavailable for the later run reported in the supplied comments.
QA Engineer Review
Changed tests cover engine request ID headers on streamed and non-streamed replies, generated and client-supplied disaggregated IDs, worker forwarding, unchanged Chat Completions IDs, and the response.created event ID. The engine request ID test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No changed integration test requiring a test-list entry was identified.
The reported targeted coverage addresses the primary response-ID and header behaviors. Coverage verdict: sufficient. The broader CPU run and pending CI status do not provide an all-clear for the full suite.

A /v1/responses reply is named with a random resp_ id, so nothing in it
ties the reply to the server's log lines, perf metrics or post-processor
hook records for the same request, which use the engine's request id.
- The Responses route sends the engine's request id in an
x-trtllm-engine-request-id response header, on the streamed and the
non-streamed reply. No header is sent when the id is unknown.
- In disaggregated serving each worker numbers its own engine requests,
so an engine request id does not name one request there. When the
disaggregated server assigns a request its disaggregated request id,
before any worker sees it, it names a Responses request
resp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex>, and both workers answer under that
name. A request_id the client set is kept; other requests are
unchanged.

A run of the skill on a clean machine, from the skill alone, could not
reach a passing cell. This adds what it missed:
- The Codex default profile's echo is measured (exact: codex-cli 0.155.1,
12 sessions against the fake server). Conformance was BLOCKED on it. The
contract template now asks for echo.
- The capture changes are named by PR (NVIDIA#21605, NVIDIA#21602, NVIDIA#20936), with where to
get a wheel that matches the base and which CPU suites to run.
- The wiring snippets use absolute paths, create their task, pass --build-id
and --matrix, and state which claims a wiring run must pass.
- The real run has a full serve command with the recorder in front, and
profiles/model/serving/ holds complete configs for GLM-5.3-NVFP4 and
DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash as their cells were served.
- The matrix template proposes starting thresholds, lists the units each
threshold needs, drops keys the verdict never reads, and names cell
directories.
- templates/full-tier-report.md: the full tier's steps and the five files it
writes.
- Smaller additions: restricting egress, a harness's own sandbox inside a
container, Codex over-length on main (PR NVIDIA#21060), where the GLM goldens
came from, test and gate hygiene, and the controls receipt command.

Test the generated ID in a generation-first stream.
The added naming test does not stream. Existing generation-first Responses streaming coverage does not assert request IDs or the ID in response.created. Add one streamed Responses case with a lazy generation-worker SSE generator. Assert that both workers receive the same generated ID and that response.created contains that ID.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
Assigning the name once, before the context-retry loop, keeps it stable when a retry gets a new disaggregated request id. The disagg test round-trips the body through _encode_request_body, so it verifies that the assigned request_id actually reaches the workers under exclude_unset.
Requested before merge:
Ticket: this is a user-visible feature (new response header, plus a changed reply id format on the disaggregated server), so it should carry a JIRA ID instead of [None].
Docs:docs/source/features/disagg-serving.md (around line 261) already has a /v1/responses section. Please add two things there: that reply ids on the disaggregated server are now resp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex> and match the disagg_request_id in perf metrics, and that worker response headers (including x-trtllm-engine-request-id) are not forwarded. The new header on trtllm-serve should also be documented wherever the Responses extensions are described, or at least noted in the release notes. Otherwise operators won't know it exists, and it was the reason for the change.
Cover streamed context-first Responses replies with the generated ID.
The new test checks the generated id for both scheduling styles, but every request in it is non-streamed. No context-first test runs a streamed Responses request and checks the generated ID. A regression that names only non-streamed replies would pass the current tests.
Add a context-first streaming case beside test_only_a_responses_reply_is_named_after_the_disagg_request_id. Have the generation worker stub return an SSE stream, using _mock_streaming_response, whose response.created event carries received.request_id. Call openai_responses with stream=True, consume the stream, and assert that the response.created event carries a resp_101_<16 hex> ID that matches the ID sent to the generation worker. Parametrize the case for context_first only.

- The engine request id header is sent on every /v1/responses reply:
every executor gives a request its id when it accepts it, so the
"no id, no header" branch could not run on a real server. Drop it and

Add a complementary worker-side assertion for the opening response ID.
The fake at tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_service.py:1041 copies received.request_id into response.created. The changed test therefore verifies the disaggregated name and its delivery to both workers, but it does not execute the production construction in ResponsesStreamingProcessor.get_initial_responses(). Add a worker-side test that parses the response.created frame from get_initial_responses() and asserts that its response ID equals the request ID.
Do not replace the fake with get_initial_responses() in the disaggregated test. The production method emits both response.created and response.in_progress, so that would change the test’s one-event contract.

@JunyiXu-nv Thanks. I inspected test_a_streamed_responses_reply_is_named_after_the_disagg_request_id in tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_service.py.
The test covers both context_first and generation_first. It consumes the stream, checks the reply ID against resp_101_[0-9a-f]{16}, and verifies that both workers receive the same ID.
This coverage is sufficient for the two streaming concerns. No additional test is needed for those concerns. I did not run the tests.

@JunyiXu-nv Thanks. I inspected the new test in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_streaming_events.py.
It calls the real ResponsesStreamingProcessor.get_initial_responses() with an explicit request_id. It checks both the response.created event type and the response ID.
This coverage is sufficient for the real processor’s initial-event naming behavior. It complements the disaggregated forwarding test; the one-event fake does not need to change.

Description
A
/v1/responsesreply is namedresp_<random hex>, so nothing in it ties the reply to the server's log lines, perf metrics or post-processor hook records (--post_processor_hook) for the same request, which name it by the engine's request id. What this change does:
trtllm-serve: the Responses route sends the engine's request id in a new response header,x-trtllm-engine-request-id: <engine request id>, on the streamed and the non-streamed reply. Every executor gives a request its id when it accepts it, so the header is always sent. The reply body, itsidincluded, is unchanged.resp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex>(the request'srequest_id, under which a worker answers). The disaggregated request id is unique across the deployment, and the per-request perf metrics of the disaggregated server and of both workers carry it, next to each worker's own engine request id.request_idis not forwarded (unset fields are left out of the forwarded body), so each worker makes up its own.request_idthe client set is kept. Chat Completions, Completions and Messages requests are not touched. The aggregated reply gets a header rather than an id like
resp_<engine request id>_<hex>(as #20936 names Messages) because a Responses id is fixed before the engine assigns its id: the route stores the request's input messages under it forprevious_response_id, the streaming processor keys its state by it, and a postprocessing worker gets a copy of the request when it is submitted. Renaming the reply afterwards would break the stored conversation chain; the header leaves the id alone.Behaviour changes:
/v1/responsesreplies oftrtllm-servecarry the newx-trtllm-engine-request-idresponse header. Clients that do not know it ignore it.resp_<32 hex>toresp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex>. It is still an opaque, uniqueresp_id. The disaggregated server does not forward worker response headers, so the generation worker's header does not reach clients there; the reply id names the request instead.Test Coverage
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_engine_request_id.py(new, CPU, added tol0_cpu.yml):test_a_reply_names_its_engine_request_in_a_header[non_streaming],[streaming]: through the/v1/responsesroute of a server built bymake_stub_openai_server, a reply whose generation has engine request id 42 carriesx-trtllm-engine-request-id: 42.tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_service.py(CPU, already inl0_cpu.ymlthroughunittest/disaggregated):test_only_a_responses_reply_is_named_after_the_disagg_request_id[context_first],[generation_first]: throughOpenAIDisaggregatedService.openai_responsesandopenai_chat_completion, with stubbed context and generation clients that parse the forwarded body as a worker does and answer under therequest_idthey parsed. Two Responses requests with disaggregated request id 101 come back asresp_101_<16 hex>under different names, and the context worker is sent the same names; a Responses request with a client-setrequest_idkeeps it; a chat reply keeps the generation worker's own id.test_a_streamed_responses_reply_is_named_after_the_disagg_request_id[context_first],[generation_first]: a streamed Responses request opens with aresponse.createdevent namedresp_101_<16 hex>, the name both workers are sent.All six fail on main by assertion (no header;
resp_<32 hex>instead ofresp_101_<16 hex>) and pass with this change. Run on CPU against a checkout without compiled extensions, over the Responses, serve and disaggregated test files that reach these routes plus the new ones (2038 tests): main and this branch have the same one failure and one collection error, both for want of model files (LLM_MODELS_ROOTunset); the six new tests are the whole difference. Removing the header, the header on either reply, the rename, either of its two call sites, the client-set check, the Responses-only check or the random part each makes the new tests fail. The stub promises of
test_responses_usage.py,test_responses_streaming_events.pyandtest_disagg_responses_api.pycarry arequest_id, as a realRequestOutputdoes.Docs: the header is described in the
trtllm-serveResponses API section, the disaggregated reply id format and the unforwarded worker headers in the Responses API section ofdocs/source/features/disagg-serving.md, and both in a release-note line.PR Checklist

Dev Engineer Review
/v1/responsesreplies fromtrtllm-servenow includex-trtllm-engine-request-idfor streamed and non-streamed responses. Disaggregated Responses requests receive aresp_<disagg_request_id>_<16 hex>ID before worker dispatch when the client does not provide arequest_id. The change preserves client-supplied IDs and leaves other request types unchanged. Both workers receive the same generated ID.Disaggregated serving does not forward worker response headers. The documentation describes the response-ID behavior, retry considerations, and header limitation. No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable.
The author reports that six new CPU tests pass on this branch and fail on
main. In the reported 2,038-test CPU run, both branches had one failure and one collection error due to missing model files whileLLM_MODELS_ROOTwas unset. CI completion status is unavailable for the later run reported in the supplied comments.QA Engineer Review
Changed tests cover engine request ID headers on streamed and non-streamed replies, generated and client-supplied disaggregated IDs, worker forwarding, unchanged Chat Completions IDs, and the
response.createdevent ID. The engine request ID test is listed intests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No changed integration test requiring a test-list entry was identified. The reported targeted coverage addresses the primary response-ID and header behaviors. Coverage verdict: sufficient. The broader CPU run and pending CI status do not provide an all-clear for the full suite.
