Dev Engineer Review

The pool shares only direct *.cubin artifacts under ArtifactPath.TRTLLM_GEN_FMHA. It checks the rank-local cache first, then the shared pool, and downloads only on a miss. Shared files are published with atomic rename and verified by SHA-256 when read.

The pool is limited to TensorRT-LLM-managed rank- workspaces. It is bypassed when FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR is set or when TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=0. FlashInfer headers and other artifacts retain their per-rank paths. No GPU performance results for the release branch or review findings were supplied.

QA Engineer Review

Added tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py and listed it in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Tests cover pool eligibility, cross-rank reuse, artifact exclusions, corrupt pool entries, failed downloads, concurrent reads, and idempotent loader wrapping. The test list includes the file for CPU CI. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the pool behavior represented by these tests; GPU serving behavior is not established by the supplied test evidence.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • docs/source/llm-api/index.md — Documents shared cubin lookup, atomic publication, SHA-256 verification, and the disable setting. Verify that these instructions match launcher workspace behavior.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py — Adds the conditional read-through pool and loader wrapper. Verify managed-workspace detection, local/shared cache lookup, integrity checks, and fallback behavior.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_utils.py — Installs the pool when FlashInfer is available. Verify that unsupported FlashInfer loader APIs leave the existing loader behavior unchanged.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py — Adds CPU-only tests for eligibility, reuse, exclusions, corruption, failed downloads, concurrent reads, and idempotent wrapping. Listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml — Adds the cubin-pool unit test to the CPU CI list. Verify the CI selector runs the cpu_only test.

Description

Cherry-pick of #20257 to release/1.3. Fixes https://nvbugs/6825983.

release/1.3 branched from main on 2026-09-24, after #19034 (2c4beda, "Isolate the FlashInfer cubin cache per rank") merged, so it carries the regression. Under attention-DP, a TRTLLM-Gen FMHA kernel that warmup does not reach is downloaded lazily, by every rank separately, on the serving path. Ranks that did not serve the warmup request then stall on that download (~1 s), and the whole step waits for them. On ctx_only-gb300_nemotron-ultra-v3-fp4_8k64k_con64_ctx1_dep4_… that cost ~8 % output-token throughput (CI 10.03 → 9.23 tok/s).

The change shares only the TRTLLM-Gen FMHA kernel cubins (the *.cubin files directly under ArtifactPath.TRTLLM_GEN_FMHA) across the ranks of a launch, through a cubins/ directory next to the per-rank workspace slots. Lookups go to the rank-local cache first, then the shared directory (read in place, SHA-256 verified), and only then download and publish with an atomic rename. Headers, checksum files and all other artifacts stay per-rank, so nvbug 6739553 (the reason for #19034) stays fixed. TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=0 turns it off. See #20257 for the full description.

Differences from #20257

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, its unit test, and the flashinfer_utils.py hook are byte-identical to the main commit. release/1.3 pins the same flashinfer-python==0.6.18, so the FlashInfer contract the pool hooks into (cubin_loader.get_artifact, ArtifactPath.TRTLLM_GEN_FMHA) is the same.
  • release/1.3's launcher and MpiPoolSession bootstrap produce the same rank-N slots under ~/.cache/tensorrt_llm/flashinfer and set TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_WORKSPACE_MANAGED=1, which is what the pool keys on. release/1.3 has no TRTLLM_CACHE_DIR support ([TRTLLM-16212][feat] Unified caching via TRTLLM_CACHE_DIR environment variable #18897 is main-only); this change does not need it.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml: a trivial adjacent-line conflict, resolved by keeping both entries.

Test Coverage

Node Pool ON Pool OFF Δ
nvl72d426 9.88, 9.85, 9.88, 9.82 9.17, 9.19, 9.10, 9.18 +7.5 %
nvl72d412 9.76, 9.80, 9.81, 9.80 9.11, 9.22, 9.05, 9.23 +6.9 %

Rank-0 iteration 3 was 422–427 ms with the pool and 1237–1533 ms without, in every rep. This was not re-measured on a release/1.3 build.

…olated MPI ranks

Per-rank FlashInfer workspaces keep downloaded artifacts per rank so that
trtllm-gen export headers, which are compiler inputs, are never replaced
under a peer rank's compilation. Runtime kernel cubins are only ever
loaded with cuModuleLoadData, yet they became per-rank as well, so every
rank downloads each TRTLLM-Gen FMHA kernel it uses on its own. FlashInfer
loads those kernels lazily, the first time a request shape selects one,
so a kernel that warmup does not reach is fetched on the serving path.
Under attention DP only the rank that served the warmup request has it,
and the other ranks stall on the download in lockstep.

Route lookups of the FMHA kernel cubins (the *.cubin files directly under
ArtifactPath.TRTLLM_GEN_FMHA) through a read-through pool next to the
per-rank workspace slots: try the rank-local cache, then the pool, then
download and publish to the pool with an atomic rename. Pooled cubins are
read in place and checked against the artifact's SHA-256. Headers,
checksum files and all other artifacts keep FlashInfer's own per-rank
path. The pool is enabled only for TensorRT-LLM-managed rank-N
workspaces, is skipped when FLASHINFER_CUBIN_DIR is set, and can be
turned off with TRTLLM_FLASHINFER_SHARED_CUBINS=0.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared storage for eligible FlashInfer FMHA kernel cubins across managed rank workspaces. The loader checks local and shared caches before downloading, verifies shared files with SHA-256, and publishes nonempty downloads atomically. The change also adds CPU-only tests and documentation.

Changes

Shared Cubin Pool

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pool eligibility and loader installation
tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_utils.py, tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml
The pool selects a sibling cubins directory only for eligible managed rank workspaces. FlashInfer loader installation is conditional and idempotent. Tests cover pool eligibility and wrapper installation.
Cubin lookup and publication
tensorrt_llm/_torch/flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, tests/unittest/_torch/flashinfer/test_flashinfer_cubin_pool.py, docs/source/llm-api/index.md
The loader checks verified local and shared cubins before downloading. It shares only eligible direct-child FMHA kernel cubins and atomically publishes nonempty downloads. Tests cover reuse, filtering, corrupt entries, failed downloads, and concurrent access. Documentation describes the lookup order and sharing controls.

The shared cubin pool removes repeated downloads after the first rank publishes a kernel. When many ranks need the same new kernel at the same moment, they can still each download it, which leaves the serving stall only partly fixed. The new concurrency test can also miss some worker failures. Neither issue corrupts data, but both should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.
