Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. WalkthroughEmbedding bias now supports sparse index/value pairs alongside dense tensors and lists. The cache sizing is the main issue: one request carrying logit_bias causes a max_num_sequences × vocab_size allocation in the logits dtype, after KV-cache memory has already been planned (see inline). Please size it before memory planning or bound it by the slots actually in use. Also confirm this belongs on release/1.3. It's a perf refactor that also changes a public SamplingParams field.
Other items:
- API stability reference not updated.
tests/unittest/api_stability/references_committed/sampling_params.yaml:101still recordsembedding_biasasOptional[torch.Tensor]. The annotation is now a Union, so I expect the api_stability test to fail. Behavior also changes for callers that read the field back: before,SamplingParams.embedding_biaswas always normalized to a clonedtorch.Tensor. Now it is whatever the caller passed in (list, tuple, or an uncloned tensor). That is visible to user code, so theapi-compatiblelabel and the docstring should say so. - Description. It says "Test Coverage: Unchanged", but the PR adds
test_llm_invalid_embedding_bias, a sparse-to-dense test, and aSamplingParamsnormalization test, and it rewrites the invalid-token tests into a class-scoped fixture. Please list these, and also mention the new PyExecutor validation and the OpenAI-protocol change. Separately,EmbeddingBiasCachehas no direct unit test. A CPU/GPU test that checks the applied rows in each of these cases would cover the new invalidation logic: (a) a seq slot is reused by a request with a different bias, (b) biased and unbiased requests are mixed in one batch, (c) two requests share an identical bias, and (d) spec-decoding with steps > 1. - Release notes. The sparse
embedding_biasform is a new user-facing input. Please add a note to the release notes or docs.

This holds a full (max_num_sequences, vocab_size) buffer in the logits dtype. With the default max_batch_size=2048 and a 128k vocab in fp32, that is about 1 GB, and about 2 GB for 256k-vocab models (more under PP, since max_num_sequences scales with pp_size). It is allocated lazily in apply_embedding_bias on the first biased request. By then KV-cache sizing has already given away the free memory, so a single logit_bias request on a busy server can OOM mid-serving. Options:
- allocate at sampler construction, so memory profiling sees it, and gate it on a config flag;
- size it to the number of distinct live biases (use a slot→row indirection; the NB comment in
updatealready points this way); - keep the sparse form on device and build the dense rows inside the compiled add.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The sentinel only records that the request was cached at some point. It doesn't record which slot the row was written to. SeqSlotManager.prepare_resources can give a request a new slot, for example when is_disagg_generation_transmission_complete is true. In that case the request keeps reading _flat_cache[new_slot], which may still hold another request's bias, or uninitialized memory from torch.empty. Store the slot the row was written for (setattr(req, ..., req.py_seq_slot)) and refresh the row when it differs from the current py_seq_slot.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Building on this: rather than recording the slot on the request via setattr, the cache could own a per-slot record of the py_request_id each row was written for, and rewrite the row whenever it differs from the current request. That covers the slot-change case and keeps the cache's state out of LlmRequest.

Tensor.scatter_ has historically required an int64 index, unlike index_select. Here the index is built as int32, and the same pattern appears in BaseWorker._embedding_bias_sparse_to_dense ([base_worker.py:352](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/19729/files#diff-0ebb3195d987a59ab750ef38e06a2e519b0cc100ed9965c4223c77e8c3154349R352)). If the pinned torch version rejects it, every biased request fails inside the sampler. Please confirm against the pinned torch version, or switch both to torch.int64.

I checked this against the release/1.3 stack (NGC 26.08, torch 2.14.0a0+4fdf77b940.nv26.08): Tensor.scatter_ with an int32 index works on both CUDA and CPU, so this isn't a blocker there.

Normalization is decided by container type only, and nothing checks the element types:
- A sparse bias given as a list of pairs (
[(42, -2.0)], which is what JSON or YAML round-trips produce) takes the dense branch. It becomes((0, (42, -2.0)),)with no error. - A 2-D tensor goes through
.tolist()and ends up the same way. - A tuple containing lists is unhashable, so
bias_to_index[req_bias]raises later.
All of these fail late, in _validate_embedding_bias or in the sampler, with confusing errors. Please validate at construction: dense input must be 1-D, and sparse input must be a sequence of (int, float) pairs, converted to a tuple of tuples. Separately, .tolist() on a full-vocab tensor creates a Python list of about 150k elements per request on the frontend. That may be acceptable, but it costs more than the old clone().

There was a problem hiding this comment.
For a dense bias where most entries are nonzero (e.g. a full-vocab gRPC embedding_bias list), this runs a Python loop of about vocab_size iterations per request on the executor thread. A vectorized check, or a single min/max over the indices computed once in SamplingParams, would avoid that. Unrelated to speed: val is never used, and non-finite bias values (NaN, inf) are not rejected anywhere on this path.

Passing the cache in as maybe_embedding_bias_cache and getting it back as the return value is what made the f1657b3 fix necessary, and this is the only caller. Could the sampler own the cache (created at construction, which would also help the sizing point, or lazily), with apply_embedding_bias becoming an EmbeddingBiasCache method that returns None?

Hi @ixlmar, thanks for the embedding-bias perf work!
Quick heads-up on timing: release/1.3 is only taking fixes for 1.3.0 blockers at this point, and the linked bug isn't marked for 1.3.0. Could we hold the merge on this branch for now?
If it's needed in 1.3.0, just tag the bug for 1.3.0 and resolve this thread.
Only about release timing, not the code; please hold the merge for now, your call on whether it goes in.
Description
Note that this feature branch contains commits from #19412. It is a mild refactor of
apply_embedding_bias. The new classEmbeddingBiasCache(i) avoids reconstruction of device-side embedding bias tensors in each iteration and (ii) encapsulates the optimized bias-tensor construction previously contained inapply_embedding_bias.Test Coverage

Verify compatibility with callers that use the previous dense-tensor field. Cache invalidation, sequence-slot reuse, and duplicate-index behavior need follow-up validation. Test results and review severity counts were not provided.
QA Engineer Review
Modified tests cover sparse-to-dense conversion, sampling-parameter normalization, serialization, gRPC conversion, invalid bias inputs, and PyTorch bias application. The changed tests appear in CI test lists; no changed test-list files were reported. The test-list checks did not confirm manual-QA list entries.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The changes do not report test results, and the tests summarized here do not establish cache reuse or invalidation behavior.
