WalkthroughEmbedding bias accepts sparse index/value pairs and converts dense tensor or list inputs to sparse pairs. The OpenAI protocol returns sorted sparse pairs. Executor paths convert or preserve bias representations, PyExecutor validates indices against vocabulary size, and the PyTorch sampler builds bias rows for logits. ChangesSparse embedding bias

TestLlmInputValidationwith a class-scopedLLMfixture. Added:test_llm_invalid_embedding_biaswith 4 parameter cases. Updated:test_embedding_bias_with_torch_sampler_strategiesuses a sparse tuple.- Issue: the two "invalid length" cases (tensor and list of 32001 entries) depend on
vocab_sizebeing 32000 for the Llama model. The match string is generic, so a change of model would make these cases silently valid. Derive the length from the model config (for examplevocab_size + 1).- Issue: a failed request must not poison the class-scoped
LLMfor later tests. The test relies on that. This is acceptable, but keep the ordering independent.- CI list: confirm this file's new test IDs are covered by an existing list under
tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/.- Verdict: sufficient, with the follow-up on the hard-coded length.

Moving bias into py_embedding_bias drops it during request broadcasting because the Python attribute whitelist excludes this field. Pipeline-parallel sampling consequently ignores logit bias. Include it in serialization to every rank.

Direct executor.Request callers still populate the public embedding_bias field, but this conversion now reads only py_embedding_bias. Their bias is silently discarded. Fall back to normalizing the existing public tensor field.

The sparse cache is initialized only once, although SamplingParams remains mutable. Setting or clearing embedding_bias afterward leaves requests using stale cached values. Refresh the cache when preparing each request.

On the PyTorch path the C++ Request now gets embedding_bias=None, so its ndim == 1 check no longer runs, and anything that isn't a Tensor/list is taken as sparse. [(5, 1.0)] or a 2-D tensor now passes _validate_embedding_bias and fails in the sampler, which fails the whole batch via _handle_errors. Could you validate the shape here (1-D tensor / list of numbers / tuple of (int, float) pairs) and raise otherwise?

Short dense biases are now silently zero-padded (as the test comment notes); before, they failed in the sampler on the shape mismatch, and the gRPC path still enforces len == vocab_size. Since the dense length is known in __post_init__, could we carry it along and reject len != vocab_size in _validate_embedding_bias?

Nit: could the error include the offending index and the range, e.g. f"Embedding bias index {idx} out of range [0, {self.vocab_size})"? It would also be good to use the same vocab source as _validate_token_id_range (lm_head.num_embeddings).

Keys like "5" and "05" both parse to token 5 and now end up as duplicate indices, which the new docstring says is undefined (scatter_). Collecting into a dict[int, float] keyed by token_id would keep the previous last-wins behavior.

Hi @ixlmar, thanks for the embedding-bias perf work!
Quick heads-up on timing: release/1.3 is only taking fixes for 1.3.0 blockers at this point, and the linked bug isn't marked for 1.3.0. Could we hold the merge on this branch for now?
If it's needed in 1.3.0, just tag the bug for 1.3.0 and resolve this thread.
Only about release timing, not the code; please hold the merge for now, your call on whether it goes in.
Description
Switches representation of embedding biases from dense
torch.Tensorto sparse data structure using Python built-in types. Reduces host overhead and enables smaller, deduplicated host-to-device transfers. A ~3x speed-up has been observed for small models and biases affecting only a single vocabulary index.Test Coverage
