Summary

Shields-down currently rejects a live OpenClaw devices store when OpenClaw restores its native private modes after the guard applies mutable permissions. This change accepts native 0700 or 0755 directories and 0600 files only for the sandbox-owned OpenClaw devices subtree during high-risk unlock verification; locked posture and every other path remain strict.

Immutable source evidence: E2E run 31984816235, Shields job 95257969852, artifact 9273549662, digest sha256:4ee9e9e4f3fba846aa8725070d07e36e2399d9227910d6d2730732b47d22e61a.

Related Issue

Relates #8112.

Changes

  • Accept OpenClaw-native directory and file modes only under the exact /sandbox/.openclaw/devices subtree during high-risk unlock verification.
  • Preserve sandbox ownership checks, ordinary mutable 2770 and 0660 modes, locked-posture checks, and existing descriptor-safe traversal controls.
  • Add enforcing coverage for native and ordinary accepted modes plus wrong-owner, unsafe-mode, unrelated-root, lookalike-config, and locked-posture rejection.
  • Document the live OpenClaw devices exception and the unchanged shields up ownership and write-removal behavior.

Documentation Writer Review

  • Documentation writer subagent reviewed the completed changes
  • Result: docs-updated
  • Evidence: docs/security/filesystem-controls.mdx documents the sandbox-owned OpenClaw devices mode exception during restoration of mutable state and confirms that shields up still removes write access. The page was reviewed against docs/AGENTS.md, WRITING.md, and the controlled word list; the supplied docs build passed.

  • Applicable broad gate passed — npm test for broad runtime/test-harness changes; npm run check for repo-wide validation/coverage changes — not applicable to this path-scoped verifier correction; repository, source-shape, test-size, conditionals, loops, Oxlint, CLI typecheck, diff, and normal hook gates passed.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The filesystem guard recognizes the OpenClaw devices subtree as native mutable state. During unlock verification, it accepts specific native directory and file modes. Tests and security documentation cover the scoped behavior.

Changes

OpenClaw device permissions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native path verification
scripts/state-dir-guard.py
The guard identifies /sandbox/.openclaw/devices descendants and permits native directory and file modes only for matching high-risk paths during unlock verification.
Validation and documentation
test/state-dir-guard-verification.test.ts, docs/security/filesystem-controls.mdx
Tests cover valid modes, invalid paths, ownership, actions, and permissions. The security documentation describes the restoration rules.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 941a0

The change narrowly accepts OpenClaw-native device modes in the sandbox-owned devices subtree while preserving strict checks elsewhere; no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks and review.

  • Nemotron 3 Ultra (second opinion): Completed · high confidence · 0 blockers · 0 warnings · 0 suggestions
  • Model comparison: normalized findings match; normalized terminology decisions differ; normalized E2E selections differ; severity counts match.
1 terminology difference from the second opinion

Advisory only. These are normalized differences from the primary terminology receipt.

  • native at docs/security/filesystem-controls.mdx:66: selected only by the second-opinion lane as justified.
3 additional E2E selections from the second opinion

Advisory only. The primary lane did not select these E2E jobs or targets.

  • security-posture: The completed second-opinion lane identified E2E coverage that the primary lane omitted.
  • shields-config: The completed second-opinion lane identified E2E coverage that the primary lane omitted.
  • state-backup-restore: The completed second-opinion lane identified E2E coverage that the primary lane omitted.

Second-opinion terminology and E2E selections are advisory. Live E2E does not run automatically for pull requests.

3 semantic terminology decisions

Terminology decisions are advisory. They affect the assessment only when a separate finding identifies concrete semantic impact.

  • established — mutable-default posture at docs/security/filesystem-controls.mdx:64: Keep `mutable-default posture` for the restored state.
  • established — mutable state at docs/security/filesystem-controls.mdx:67: Keep `mutable state` for sandbox-owned state that can change.
  • justified — protected directories at docs/security/filesystem-controls.mdx:64: Keep `protected directories` because it distinguishes manifest-selected directories from other mutable state.

E2E guidance

Advisory only. A maintainer can dispatch the default E2E suite for the commit under review.

Recommended E2E: None

Manual-only E2E: managed-image-multiarch-startup
The manual PR workflow does not run these selectors for the commit under review. Run them from reviewed code on main.

We're going to have to add a guard to curb the embedded python (or bash, for that matter) from creeping further into the code.

A human developer wouldn't have written this, so we shouldn't let our agents get away with it.

## Summary

Add the canonical dated changelog entry required before planning the
v0.0.110 release. The entry summarizes user-facing changes merged since
v0.0.109 and links each change to its published documentation route and
source PR.

## Changes

- Add `docs/changelog/2026-08-17.mdx` with the exact `## v0.0.110`
release heading.
- Cover managed local inference, endpoint validation, onboarding and
recovery, explicit experimental Portable OpenClaw, messaging and policy
cleanup, backup and security hardening, and release qualification.
- Preserve the documentation skip list and the current supported-agent
matrix; test-only refactors, dormant activation work, and Pi-only
changes are intentionally excluded.
