Summary

nemoclaw <name> agent invoked with no further args dispatched into the sandbox even though openclaw agent requires -m — paying openshell sandbox exec latency and UNDICI setup only to surface the upstream Missing required option '-m, --message <text>' error. The wrapper now treats a bare no-args invocation like --help: it prints the wrapper summary locally and returns, with no sandbox round-trip.

Related Issue

Fixes #5658

Changes

  • src/commands/sandbox/agent.ts: short-circuit to printAgentPassthroughHelp() when extraArgs is empty (in addition to the existing help-token case), before calling runAgentPassthrough.
  • src/commands/sandbox/agent.test.ts: added a test asserting a bare <name> agent invocation prints wrapper help and does not dispatch.

Type of Change

  • Code change (feature, bug fix, or refactor)
  • Code change with doc updates
  • Doc only (prose changes, no code sample modifications)
  • Doc only (includes code sample changes)

Verification

  • PR description includes the DCO sign-off declaration and every commit appears as Verified in GitHub
  • Git hooks passed during commit and push, or npx prek run --from-ref main --to-ref HEAD passes
  • Targeted tests pass for changed behavior
  • Full npm test passes (broad runtime changes only)

  • Docs updated for user-facing behavior changes
  • npm run docs builds without warnings (doc changes only)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • The sandbox agent command now displays help immediately when invoked without required arguments, preventing unnecessary execution and improving response time.
  • Tests

    • Added test coverage for help behavior when the command is invoked with incomplete arguments.

…atching

`nemoclaw <name> agent` with no further args cannot succeed in-sandbox
(`openclaw agent` requires -m), but the wrapper dispatched into the sandbox
anyway — paying sandbox-exec latency and UNDICI setup only to surface the
upstream "Missing required option -m" error. Treat a bare no-args invocation
like --help: print the wrapper summary locally and return, without an
`openshell sandbox exec` round-trip.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Two files are changed. SandboxAgentCommand.run() gains an early-return branch that detects a bare invocation (empty extraArgs) and calls printAgentPassthroughHelp() instead of runAgentPassthrough. A matching Vitest case asserts no passthrough dispatch and correct help output.

Bare agent invocation help guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Empty-extraArgs guard and test
src/commands/sandbox/agent.ts, src/commands/sandbox/agent.test.ts
run() gains a new branch: when extraArgs.length === 0, it calls printAgentPassthroughHelp() and returns without reaching runAgentPassthrough. The new test covers this path, asserting no passthrough call and that console.log output matches /openclaw agent/.

E2E Advisor Recommendation

Optional E2E: agent-turn-latency, sessions-agents-cli

Full advisor summary

E2E Recommendation Advisor

Base: origin/main
Head: HEAD
Confidence: high

Required E2E

  • None.

Optional E2E

  • agent-turn-latency (high): Optional adjacent confidence for real OpenClaw agent turns through a live sandbox and hosted inference. This does not directly cover the changed host wrapper no-args branch, so it should not be merge-blocking for this PR.
  • sessions-agents-cli (medium): Optional adjacent host-CLI coverage for OpenClaw sessions/agents command routing, JSON envelopes, and gateway dispatch. It exercises related CLI-to-sandbox boundaries but not the singular sandbox agent wrapper changed here.

New E2E recommendations

  • sandbox-agent-cli (medium): There does not appear to be an existing live E2E that invokes the host wrapper nemoclaw <sandbox> agent ...; current live agent-turn tests call openclaw agent inside the sandbox directly or cover plural agents/sessions command groups. A focused live scenario would catch regressions in wrapper argument handling, sandbox exec dispatch, Hermes rejection, and the new bare no-args help short-circuit.
    • Suggested test: Add a lightweight sandbox-agent-passthrough live Vitest scenario covering nemoclaw <name> agent -m 'ping' --json, nemoclaw <name> agent --help, bare nemoclaw <name> agent printing wrapper help without sandbox exec, and non-OpenClaw sandbox rejection.

Vitest E2E Scenario Advisor

Base: origin/main

Required Vitest E2E scenarios

  • None. This PR changes the host-side sandbox agent wrapper command and its unit test, but it does not change the Vitest scenario workflow, registry/runtime support, fixtures/live tests/manifests, onboarding resume/repair paths, or a surface currently exercised by a dispatchable Vitest E2E scenario. Unit coverage is the appropriate signal for this help/argument-dispatch behavior.

✨ Thanks for the proposed fix addressing the bare nemoclaw <name> agent invocation that was incorrectly dispatching to the sandbox. This proposes a way to short-circuit to the wrapper help locally when no arguments are provided, avoiding the unnecessary sandbox round-trip.

## Summary
`nemoclaw <name> agent` invoked with no further args dispatched into the
sandbox even though `openclaw agent` requires `-m` — paying `openshell
sandbox exec` latency and UNDICI setup only to surface the upstream
`Missing required option '-m, --message <text>'` error. The wrapper now
treats a bare no-args invocation like `--help`: it prints the wrapper
