Ports the HybridModel/HybridStack portion of #4469 (which targeted dsv4) to dev. The mHC TransformerLayer foundation is already on dev; this PR layers the hybrid integration on top.

Summary

  • Adds HyperConnectionHybridLayer, a layer-boundary mHC wrapper for HybridStack layers. It aggregates n streams to the wrapped layer's input, computes the layer delta, and feeds it through the n-stream BDA.
  • Wraps standard HybridStack layers when config.enable_hyper_connections=True.
  • Expands hidden states to multi-residual-stream form at the first PP stage and contracts back at the last.
  • Adds _compute_mhc_block_end_plan, _build_mhc_recompute_layer_plan, and _finalize_mhc_recompute_layer on HybridStack, mirroring the caching pattern already used by TransformerBlock.
  • Threads a _called_from_hybrid_mhc_wrapper kwarg through TransformerLayer.forward so the wrapper can drive a standard TransformerLayer past the existing mHC-must-use-HyperConnectionTransformerLayer guard.
  • Adds HybridModel / HybridStack tests covering Mamba / attention / MLP / GDN / DSA layer types and the HC recompute plan, plus a dummy HybridModel mHC forward/backward test.

  • python3 -m py_compile on all changed files
  • uv run isort / uv run black clean

GPU validation (e.g. the test_dummy_hybrid_model_with_hyper_connections_forward_backward test that ran on the dsv4 branch) is still TODO on this dev port.

Changes:
- megatron/core/models/hybrid/hybrid_block.py
  - Adds HyperConnectionHybridLayer, a layer-boundary mHC wrapper that
    aggregates n streams to the wrapped hybrid layer input, computes the

  - Wraps standard HybridStack layers with HyperConnectionHybridLayer

    TransformerBlock so per-forward work is just CheckpointManager
    allocation.
  - Uses dev's `fused_h_res_h_post_bda` (dev API; PR NVIDIA#4469 renamed this
    method but the signature is unchanged).
- megatron/core/transformer/transformer_layer.py
  - TransformerLayer.forward: accept and consume
    `_called_from_hybrid_mhc_wrapper`; the existing assert that mHC
    must go through HyperConnectionTransformerLayer is now a RuntimeError
    gated on this flag so the hybrid wrapper can drive a wrapped
    TransformerLayer through the standard forward.
  - HyperConnectionTransformerLayer.forward: defensively pop the new
    kwarg.
- Tests
  - Adds HybridModel mHC tests covering constructor wrapping, dummy
    forward/backward, Mamba / attention / MLP / GDN / DSA layer-type
    coverage, and the HC recompute plan.
  - Adds dsa_gpt_mamba_equivalence test for the HC-wrapped path.

Skipped from PR NVIDIA#4469 (does not apply on dev):
- `_should_call_local_cudagraph` / `__call__` override on HybridStack
  (dev refactored cudagraph entry via NVIDIA#4293 and no longer inherits
  GraphableMegatronModule).
- `CudaGraphScope.full_iteration` extra clause in the local cudagraph
  guard (paired with the refactor above).

[IMPORTANT Correctness] mhc_multistream is not saved before contraction, so MTP depth layers receive degraded single-stream data.

TransformerBlock.forward (lines 948-965) saves the pre-contraction n-stream tensor as mhc_multistream and returns it alongside hidden_states so that GPTModel can pass it to MultiTokenPredictionBlock. HybridStack.forward contracts without saving the pre-contraction tensor, and HybridModel.forward never propagates mhc_multistream.

When enable_hyper_connections=True + mtp_num_layers > 0 + HybridModel, MultiTokenPredictionBlock.forward receives mhc_multistream=None and falls back to feeding contracted [s, b, C] hidden states to its depth layers (see multi_token_prediction.py line ~1721-1726), losing per-stream diversity that TransformerBlock preserves.

Suggested fix: Mirror the TransformerBlock pattern — save hidden_states before learned_output_contract, return a tuple (hidden_states, mhc_multistream) when MTP is configured, and update HybridModel.forward to unpack and propagate mhc_multistream to the MTP block.

[SUGGESTION Simplification] This bare assert is stripped by python -O / PYTHONOPTIMIZE=1. If a future inner layer violates the shape contract, the subtraction on line 180 would silently broadcast instead of failing with a clear message.

I see Megatron-LM uses assert extensively in similar paths, so this is consistent with codebase convention. But given this specific assertion guards against silent n-stream corruption (the subtraction could broadcast rather than crash), a conditional raise would be more robust:

  • tp_group fallback for MambaLayer wrapping → pre-existing MambaLayer behavior; the fallback is intentional and returns the same group
  • Double mHC wrapping with HyperConnectionTransformerLayer → built-in hybrid specs never use this class; would require deliberate custom construction
  • MoE router distribution change → architecturally equivalent to HyperConnectionTransformerLayer path in TransformerBlock

Overall Assessment

Low risk. The core mHC integration — HyperConnectionHybridLayer wrapper, delta computation, dtype handling, recompute plan, contraction/expansion, and sharded_state_dict — is well-implemented and correctly mirrors the TransformerBlock/HyperConnectionTransformerLayer patterns. * fix: restore dev-only training.py features dropped by the main override

The merge takes main's training.py wholesale (per the sync skill's override
list), which silently reverted four dev-only features whose supporting core
code the merge keeps at dev's version. Each surfaced as a CI failure:

1. Dynamic context-parallel API rename. Dev renamed
   get_hybrid_data_context_parallel_groups -> get_dynamic_data_context_parallel_groups
   (identical signature) and args.hybrid_context_parallel -> dynamic_context_parallel.
   Point training.py at dev's names. Fixes the conftest.py ImportError that
   cascaded to every unit-test bucket.

2. Dynamic-CP / sequence-packing data loading. Replace main's setup-time
   HybridCPDataLoaderWrapper wrap with dev's per-step wrap_data_iterator
   (gated on config.sequence_packing_scheduler), which returns a
   RerunDataIterator-compatible iterator. Fixes the *_cp4_dcp RerunDataIterator
   assertion.

3. MTP loss logging scale. Dev's MTPLossLoggingHelper stores raw loss sums and
   token counts and computes the per-token loss after reduction, so the log
   scale must be 1.0; main's 1/get_num_microbatches() divided the reported
   mtp_N loss by num_microbatches. Fixes moe gpt3_..._scoped_cudagraph mtp_1
   loss (was 16x too small: 0.682 vs golden 10.915).

4. DSA indexer loss cross-PP reduction. dsa.py requires num_layers (and
   csa_compress_ratios) so first-pipeline-stage ranks lazily initialize the
   tracker and join the cross-PP all_reduce in reduce_loss_in_tracker; main's
   call omitted them, so stage 0 returned early and the last stage hung on an
   unmatched all_reduce. Fixes the gpt3_..._dsv4_hybrid_mhc_mtp NCCL timeout.

* fix: post-CI corrections for sync test/impl reconciliation

1) test_optimizer.py: reverted to dev. The sync kept dev's
   multi_latent_attention.py (split q/kv down-proj, no
   _synthesize_fused_qkv_down_weight), but auto-merged main's
   test asserting the fused linear_qkv_down_proj.weight key.

2) training.py: guard the dev-only sequence_packing_scheduler config
   access with getattr (lines in train_step and train()). main's new
   MIMO schedule-plumbing test (NVIDIA#5333) passes an empty SimpleNamespace
   config; the reconciled training.py keeps dev's packing path, so the
   access must tolerate a config lacking the attribute. Real configs are
   unaffected (getattr returns the same value).

* fix: restore dev-only training.py features dropped by the main override

The merge takes main's training.py wholesale (per the sync skill's override
list), which silently reverted four dev-only features whose supporting core
code the merge keeps at dev's version. Each surfaced as a CI failure:

1. Dynamic context-parallel API rename. Dev renamed
   get_hybrid_data_context_parallel_groups -> get_dynamic_data_context_parallel_groups
   (identical signature) and args.hybrid_context_parallel -> dynamic_context_parallel.
   Point training.py at dev's names. Fixes the conftest.py ImportError that
   cascaded to every unit-test bucket.

2. Dynamic-CP / sequence-packing data loading. Replace main's setup-time
   HybridCPDataLoaderWrapper wrap with dev's per-step wrap_data_iterator
   (gated on config.sequence_packing_scheduler), which returns a
   RerunDataIterator-compatible iterator. Fixes the *_cp4_dcp RerunDataIterator
   assertion.

3. MTP loss logging scale. Dev's MTPLossLoggingHelper stores raw loss sums and
   token counts and computes the per-token loss after reduction, so the log
   scale must be 1.0; main's 1/get_num_microbatches() divided the reported
   mtp_N loss by num_microbatches. Fixes moe gpt3_..._scoped_cudagraph mtp_1
   loss (was 16x too small: 0.682 vs golden 10.915).

4. DSA indexer loss cross-PP reduction. dsa.py requires num_layers (and
   csa_compress_ratios) so first-pipeline-stage ranks lazily initialize the
   tracker and join the cross-PP all_reduce in reduce_loss_in_tracker; main's
   call omitted them, so stage 0 returned early and the last stage hung on an
   unmatched all_reduce. Fixes the gpt3_..._dsv4_hybrid_mhc_mtp NCCL timeout.

* fix: post-CI corrections for sync test/impl reconciliation

1) test_optimizer.py: reverted to dev. The sync kept dev's
   multi_latent_attention.py (split q/kv down-proj, no
   _synthesize_fused_qkv_down_weight), but auto-merged main's
   test asserting the fused linear_qkv_down_proj.weight key.

2) training.py: guard the dev-only sequence_packing_scheduler config
   access with getattr (lines in train_step and train()). main's new
   MIMO schedule-plumbing test (NVIDIA#5333) passes an empty SimpleNamespace
   config; the reconciled training.py keeps dev's packing path, so the
   access must tolerate a config lacking the attribute. Real configs are
   unaffected (getattr returns the same value).
