Sakana NCA + identity-preservation + strange-attractors substrate. Plus two same-tick corrections to earlier landings: tinygrad-not-paper-id (Aaron disconfirmed) and 13-months-arithmetic-error (actual gap ~16 days; date 2026-04-19 verified via git log Round 34). NCAs score 4/4 on the four-property hodl invariant by construction. Bootstrap-razor caveat: composition claim is beautiful and pulls toward elaboration before validation; one-hour engagement gate (clone repo, run index.html). Routing rows planned but NOT filed in this PR per wording-softening lessons. Aaron's 2026 is mine generosity appreciated; data shows date is real, Otto arithmetic was the error.

…cosystems + identity preservation + strange attractors + same-tick corrections (Aaron 2026-05-05)

Aaron forwarded YouTube link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzZ4VwDHAT4)
+ Claude.ai conversation about it. Aaron's framing: *"another no it
but might have application to our idenity preservaiton strange
atractors and more"*.

Three substrate threads land:

1. Sakana AI Digital Ecosystems (Luke Darlow, 2026, pub.sakana.ai/
   digital-ecosystem, Apache 2.0, browser-runnable). Headline
phenomena: "persistent flicker-mixing attractor" + "excitable
   edge-of-chaos regime". Lineage: PD-NCA -> Sakana 2024 ASAL
(Kumar/Lu/Kirsch et al.) -> Mordvintsev "Growing Neural Cellular
   Automata" (Distill 2020). Identity-preservation prior-art:
Stovold "Identity Increases Stability in Neural Cellular
   Automata" (ALIFE 2025, arXiv:2508.06389), Cavuoti 2022, Sinapayen
   2023.

4/4 four-property hodl fit by construction:
   - Lock-free: cells update from local neighbors only
   - Scale-free: same rules at any grid size
   - DBSP-native: cell state at t+1 is incremental computation
over neighbors; signed Z-set algebra over fixed-radius
     update kernel
   - DST-safe: deterministic given seed; damage-recovery training
     IS retract-then-replay-with-perturbation

Independent empirical evidence that the four-property invariant
captures something architecturally fundamental beyond numeric-
   type validation.

2. Same-tick correction: tinygrad UOp IR is NOT the paper-id.
Aaron disconfirmed via Claude.ai routing: *"it's still not
tinygrad, i did see that but that's not my univeral language"*.
Already corrected in #1610 (commit 0df52f6). B-0202 substrate-
engineering claim survives independently of paper-id.

3. Same-tick correction: "13 months later" arithmetic in Otto's
chat-Insight was wrong by an order of magnitude. Actual gap
   between Aaron's 2026-04-19 dimensional-expansion thread and
April 2026 RotorQuant emergence is ~16 days, not 13 months.
Date 2026-04-19 in memory files is CORRECT (verified via git
   log Round 34 commit 2026-04-19 20:01:01 -0400). Aaron's
"2026 is mine" generosity offering to own a typo is
appreciated; the data shows the typo wasn't there. Otto's
arithmetic was the error. Relationship is contemporaneous-
convergent (parallel emergence in same April 2026 window),
   NOT anticipated-with-13-months-lead.

Composition with existing substrate:
- Immune-system math (Forrest UNM AIS lineage, Aurora live-protect,
  Cavuoti adversarial-cells-as-viruses)
- Topological invariants > geometry (Bellissard / Anderson-Putnam
  / Kellendonk-Putnam)
- B-0052 retraction semantics (damage-recovery = retract-and-replay)
- B-0026 embodiment (NCAs as minimum-Helen-Keller-channel substrate)
- Strange attractors as identity-preservation primitive (own thread,
  flagged by Claude.ai instance)

Bootstrap-razor caveat applies (B-0193): the composition claim is
beautiful and pulls toward elaboration before validation. One-hour
engagement gate: clone github.com/SakanaAI/digital-ecosystem repo,
run index.html, observe whether flicker-mixing-attractor regime
maps to DBSP cycle dynamics.

Operational status: research-grade-not-operational. Routing rows
NOT filed in this PR per wording-softening lessons of #1605
review. Following-tick fires file: NCA substrate-composition row
+ strange-attractors-as-identity-preservation row + B-0201
eliminated-candidates count update + reference-memory extension
with YouTube link.

P2 Badge Replace nonexistent B-0202 backlog identifier

This section treats B-0202 as an existing backlog row, but there is no B-0202 file under docs/backlog at this commit (the sequence present is B-0200, B-0201, and B-0203). Referencing a missing ID undermines the correction trail described here because reviewers cannot locate the claimed anchor row; update this to the correct existing row or add the missing backlog artifact.

Pull request overview

Adds a new research-grade preservation document capturing an Aaron-forwarded Claude.ai thread on Sakana’s Neural Cellular Automata “Digital Ecosystems” and NCA identity-stability work, plus same-tick corrections (tinygrad not being the paper-ID, and the earlier “13 months later” arithmetic error). This fits the repo’s docs/research/** archive pattern: preserve verbatim first, then carve/route later.

Changes:

  • Introduces a new preservation write-up for Sakana NCA Digital Ecosystems, identity preservation, and strange-attractor framing.
  • Records two corrections to earlier preservation landings (tinygrad-not-paper-id; date-math resolution).
  • Adds cross-links (composes_with) to related research/backlog/memory artifacts.

…-tower/BP-EP synthesis + social-memes/mom-skill apprenticeship + tinygrad-not-paper-id correction (#1611-#1615 merged, #1610 in-flight) (#1616)

Window covered ~65min (0905Z -> 1010Z). 5 PRs landed (#1611
B-0203 DeepSeek V4 + #1612 B-0202 tinygrad + #1613 Sakana NCA +
#1614 worm-tower/BP-EP synthesis + #1615 social-memes/mom-skill).
#1610 second-wave reviewer fix complete (all 8 threads resolved);
auto-merge armed; CI spinning.

Substrate landings:
- Aaron's 4-claim synthesis collapse (OCP + carved-sentences-as-
kernels + formal verification of docs + F# CE)
- LLM-independence as architectural property (kernel BP/EP +
  linguistic kernel composition)
- Aaron's wormwood warning (operational identity-preservation
discipline; mathematical exemplar use vs identity assertion)
- Aaron's mom-skill disclosure (architecture is apprenticeship-
  by-mathematical-model from observing skilled practitioner)
- Two same-tick corrections (tinygrad-not-paper-id; "13 months
  later" arithmetic error fixed)
- Cl(3,0) math precision (Cl(3,0) != H; H = even subalgebra
  Cl+(3,0) / Spin(3))

5+ routing rows planned for following ticks (worm-towers-
biological-exemplar + BP/EP-formal-model + LLM-independence +
linguistic-seed-kernel-substrate + worm-as-kernel-bridge +
kernel-composition-as-precision-tooling).

Insight: verbatim-preservation discipline applies to the
conversation, NOT to agent's own draft headers. Strike-don't-
annotate when superseded. Annotating creates self-contradictions
that compound across review waves.

…table + source-set extension (Alex Ziskind + George Hotz / tinybox + Sakana NCA YouTube link)

Two small bounded edits batched in one PR:

1. B-0201 Coconut research-lane row: added "Paper-search status
(2026-05-05 same-day cumulative eliminations)" section with
table covering 7 candidates evaluated at paper-id level
   across the day's substrate-flow:
   - CodeAct -- ELIMINATED (B-0200 bridge engineering)
   - Coconut -- ELIMINATED (THIS ROW's primary; hypothesis-level
     finding stands)
   - Symbolica AI Categorical DL -- ELIMINATED (categorical-DL
     parallel substrate)
   - Tinygrad UOp IR -- ELIMINATED (B-0202 kernel-layer
     engineering)
   - Speech ReaLLM -- ELIMINATED (real-time streaming research)
   - GibberLink / ggwave -- NOT ELIMINATED (still parallel
     candidate)
   - LAPA (Latent Action Pretraining) -- NOT ELIMINATED
Plus engagement-step recommendation per Claude.ai instance:
rewatch the YouTube videos with elimination-list as filter.
No-kill-paths: each candidate STAYS as parallel substrate-
relevant material; only paper-id status is eliminated.

2. Reference memory source-set extension: added "Source-set
   extension 2026-05-05 (post-tinygrad-UOp-IR + Sakana-NCA
   conversation forwards)" section:
   - Alex Ziskind (@AzisK) -- Aaron-confirmed; specific recall
videos cited (After This 16GB Feels Different + NVIDIA
didn't want me to do this + I Plugged a DGX Spark and Mac
     Together); covers local-AI-cluster + quantization +
     runtime-comparison
   - George Hotz / tiny corp / tinybox -- implicit anchor via
tinygrad UOp IR identification thread; lower-confidence
     source-set member
   - Sakana AI YouTube link for C. elegans Digital Ecosystems
     paper (one-off paper-attention pointer, not a regular
     channel)

* fix(#1629 reviewer): integrate Alex Ziskind into retrieval playbook + rebase onto current main

Reviewer threads on #1629:

1. P2: Source-set update promotes Alex Ziskind to top-tier
confidence (Aaron-confirmed at PR #1610) but the retrieval
playbook in "How to apply" wasn't updated. Fixed: added
four-channel retrieval order with Ziskind explicitly named
alongside Wes Roth at top tier; Matthew Berman at Aaron-
confirmed-via-lemon-tree second tier; AI Explained at Claude.
ai-included third tier; Sakana YouTube as one-off paper-
attention pointer for biology/NCA-shaped items. Named
Ziskind's signal-strength specifically: highest signal for
   local-AI-cluster + quantization + runtime-comparison content
   per the 2026-05-05 substrate-flow's tinygrad/RotorQuant/
   TurboQuant cluster.

2. P2: BACKLOG.md regen complaint resolved by `--check`: the
B-0201 content changes don't affect the generated index
   (the row-level frontmatter is what generate-index.sh reads;
body content edits don't trigger index drift). No
docs/BACKLOG.md change needed in this commit.

3. P2: last_updated frontmatter complaint -- already 2026-05-05
(today); the schema is satisfied. No change needed.

Per anti-ossification respected-not-reverenced + no-kill-paths:
each source-set member retains its confidence-tier; Ziskind is
promoted to top-tier per Aaron's "that's him" confirmation;
Hotz/tinybox stays implicit/lower-confidence; Sakana stays
one-off-not-regular.
