make CHECKOUTPUTSVERIFY take stack arg, but check prev. executed opcode #3
Conversation
Add prev_opcode variable that is set to the just executed opcode after main script eval switch. Make CHECKOUTPUTSVERIFY to check that prev_opcode > OP_PUSHDATA4 to ensure that the hash to be checked is not constructed dynamically
Similar issue regarding *VERIFY and script success check rule was discussed here: ElementsProject/elements#202 (comment) |
A conversation with Russel O'Connor about this made me realize that because there are fundamental distinction in Bitcoin script between 'commitment time' and 'redemption time', having immediate values for opcodes makes sense. The cost of mental switch between 'stack mode' and 'immediate mode' is offset by additional information gained: the opcode with immediate argument indicates "this is pre-committed value, this may bear some additional meaning". …sync as non-deterministic c061be1 tests: Mark unit test blockfilter_index_initial_sync as non-deterministic (practicalswift) Pull request description: Mark unit test `blockfilter_index_tests/blockfilter_index_initial_sync` as non-deterministic. Before this PR: ``` $ contrib/devtools/test_deterministic_coverage.sh 500 [2019-06-04 09:58:57] Measuring coverage, run #1 of 500 [2019-06-04 10:00:33] Measuring coverage, run #2 of 500 [2019-06-04 10:02:19] Measuring coverage, run #3 of 500 The line coverage is non-deterministic between runs. Exiting. The test suite must be deterministic in the sense that the set of lines executed at least once must be identical between runs. This is a necessary condition for meaningful coverage measuring. --- gcovr.run-1.txt 2019-06-04 10:00:33.389059973 +0000 +++ gcovr.run-3.txt 2019-06-04 10:03:45.619491207 +0000 @@ -72,7 +72,7 @@ … harness (descriptor_parse) 6338c02 tests: Fix fuzzing harness for descriptor parsing (descriptor_parse) (practicalswift) Pull request description: Fix bug in the descriptor parsing fuzzing harness (`descriptor_parse`) by making sure `secp256k1_context_verify` is properly initialized (via `ECCVerifyHandle`). fac04cb refactor: Add lock annotations to Active* methods (MacroFake) fac15ff Fix logical race in rest_getutxos (MacroFake) fa97a52 Fix UB/data-race in RPCNotifyBlockChange (MacroFake) fa530bc Add ChainstateManager::GetMutex(), an alias for ::cs_main (MacroFake) Pull request description: This fixes two issues: * A data race in `ActiveChain`, which returns a reference to the chain (a `std::vector`), which is not thread safe. See also below traceback. * A corrupt rest response, which returns a blockheight and blockhash, which are unrelated to each other and to the result, as the chain might advance between each call without cs_main held. The issues are fixed by taking cs_main and holding it for the required time. ``` ================== WARNING: ThreadSanitizer: data race (pid=32335) Write of size 8 at 0x7b3c000008f0 by thread T22 This is to illustrate my point (made here: https://twitter.com/dmpsim/status/1130889625298509824) that checking previously executed opcode is simple enough, and allows to retain the consistency of stack-based execution model.
to argue my point further:
Making opcode behavior depend on the previous executed opcode adds complexity to the script execution model, but the amount of complexity added by this opcode-lookbehind mode is small, and this is arguably better than making non-pushdata opcodes use data lookahead, because this erodes the consistency of the stack machine execution model.
The argument here seems to boil down to complexity vs model consistency.
Reducing consistency just externalizes the complexity outside: to the users of the script and to the tools that operate on it.
To illustrate:
regarding
OP_TRUE
: it is needed, becauseCHECKOUTPUTSHASHVERIFY
pops the hash, does not push any result on the stack, andTRUE
is required on the stack after the script execution. If there would beCHECKOUTPUTSHASH
(non-verify), that itself pushesTRUE
orFALSE
to the stack, there would be no need for extraTRUE
, but then it is a whole opcode to waste :-/. Alternative might be to only have non-VERIFY opcode, but then if it is not at the end of the script, you will need additionalOP_VERIFY
to act on the result. While opcode-lookbehind also encumbers the execution model somewhat, by introducing inter-opcode dependency, this encumberance is small in my opinion (because only one step back), and is in line with imposing restrictions on execution for the opcodes of bitcoin script, without challenging the consistency of the execution model.
This way also allows to lift the restriction by just skipping the prev_opcode check, if this is deemed safe in the future.
