Compact tile-prefix schedules veomni/ops/kernels/moe_experts/shared/group_gemm.py |
The grouped GEMM path can build cumulative 128-row tile prefixes and use a flattened grid to locate experts. It validates supplied prefixes and retains the existing schedule when compact scheduling is unavailable. |
Capture-aware bounds and backward reuse veomni/ops/kernels/moe_experts/standard/triton.py |
Merged forward execution selects shape-derived bounds during compilation or capture. Eligible eager execution builds a device-side prefix. Same-NK backward GEMMs reuse the saved forward bound and prefix. |
Routing, capture, and documentation validation tests/ops/moe_experts/test_moe_experts.py, docs/design/fused_moe_ops.md |
Tests cover routing patterns, fallback states, synchronization, unsupported metadata, prefix reuse, and CUDA graph replay. Documentation describes the launch-bound and prefix-scheduling rules. |

Possibly related issues
- Issue 1365: The PR adds compact merged MoE scheduling and keeps eligible routing metadata on-device, which relates to the issue’s MoE kernel-overhead optimization objective.

Merge Risk:
Minimal · up to b2eb9
-
The change tightens grouped-GEMM launch bounds for the merged MoE path without a user-facing API change. No concrete merge-blocking risk was identified.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to bba34
-
The change keeps scheduling data within each operation and preserves conservative behavior during compilation and capture. No introduced vulnerability or expanded trust boundary was established. Runtime behavior under interruption and concurrency remains incompletely demonstrated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The evidenced security-sensitive outcome is correct GPU tensor addressing and output initialization within a calling MoE operation. The inspected path does not establish a new network, credential, tenant, or service authority transition. Deployment-wide exposure cannot be determined from these sources.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The inspected adopting caller constructs the prefix internally from routing histogram metadata rather than accepting a separate external schedule. The kernel rejects tile IDs beyond the cumulative schedule, maps remaining IDs to experts, and preserves expert-row and column-tail store masks. Prefix count arithmetic widens before ceiling division.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred — The new schedule is invocation-local and read-only after construction, which counters cross-invocation contamination and repeated-backward mutation concerns. It introduces no shared schedule registry or persistent reservation requiring rollback. Normal ordering and lifetime rely on the existing tensor-stream and autograd mechanisms; interruption and concurrency were assessed from source, not demonstrated through runtime fault injection.

1014-1056: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winCapture the merged backward pass
The CUDA graph body calls
forward()only, so it records the two forwardgroup_gemm_same_nkcalls. The merged autograd backward has two additional same-NK dgrad calls. The eager helper exercises those calls, but not during capture. A backward bound regression can therefore pass this test.Suggested fix

[P2] This .item() makes test_no_implicit_sync_in_generated_forward[qwen3_5_moe-text-fa2-fused] fail: that case uses merged fused_triton weights and rejects unallowlisted CUDA synchronization in veomni/ops. Reconcile the intentional scalar read with the sync gate through a narrowly justified policy/test update, or retain a synchronization-free bound, and validate the affected model-level case.

Replaced the scalar read with a device-side tile-prefix schedule, with shape-only fallbacks and no .item() or sync-policy exception. The three fused-model sync tests pass on both normal and fallback paths, and the model-level numerical checks pass. Also rebased onto the post-FC2 routing-weight layout from #1199. Thanks for catching this!

[P2] The eager path now builds tile_cumsum entirely on-device, and the fallback uses shape metadata; neither reads the histogram back to the host. The existing sync policy is unchanged, so the original scalar-read finding is fixed.

Synced with the latest main and resolved the conflict. This optimization has shown meaningful benefits in our workload, and we'd like to contribute it back to the community. We'd appreciate another review when you have a chance @Coach257 @FoolPlayer. Thank you for your time and feedback! |
What does this PR do?
Reduce empty same-NK grouped-GEMM launches in the merged Triton MoE path while keeping routing metadata on device. A device-side row-tile prefix replaces the host scalar read proposed earlier in this PR.

Each input ran baseline → candidate for ten optimizer updates per run. Relative throughput compares equal effective token work over synchronized update intervals 7–10.
Effective input lengths matched across all compared updates. Separate ten-update deterministic baseline/candidate comparisons for both inputs matched the recorded loss and gradient norm exactly. Additional instrumented one-update model runs confirmed prefix construction and reuse by backward for both inputs.
