[model, ops] feat: add Gemma 4 E2B support - #1242
Adds Gemma 4 E2B text and multimodal modeling with packed full/sliding masks, per-layer embeddings, shared KV states, and VeOmni loss outputs. Defaults wide-head Triton FlexAttention to one pipeline stage for Ampere, preserving caller overrides.
Closes#1053. Merged current main (5040b347) after #1142 and migrated the integration to the new registry, instance-local VeomniOp loss handles, public mask builders, and current attention/test paths.
Design & Code Changes
Wire tasks/train_vlm.py to Gemma4 native preprocessing and model-owned position/collation hooks. Preserve native modal token IDs, align assistant labels after media expansion, pack ragged audio/video, and recognize the Gemma4 tower layout in the VLM runtime.
Register gemma4 and gemma4_text; generate modeling against Transformers 5.16.1. Preserve generated child towers and HF checkpoint layouts.
Use public packed full/sliding mask builders with explicit sample boundaries; retain HF cache handling for unpacked inputs. Packed attention rejects supplied past_key_values and disables automatic cache creation even when use_cache=True; unpacked caching is preserved. Respect config.is_causal=False for use_bidirectional_attention="all": eager/SDPA/Flex use full or inclusive symmetric sliding predicates inside each document. FlashAttention 2/3/4 and FA2/FA3 Hub variants retain native causal/window/varlen metadata without custom predicates. Packed Flash accepts absent/all-valid masks and explicitly rejects padding masks, since HF unpadding would replace document boundaries; unpacked padding handling is unchanged.
Bind veomni_ce and loss_function on each model instance. Uncapped models retain the selected backend; softcapping forces eager loss on capped logits. Both paths remain observable to channel-loss callbacks. Capped return_log_probs=True with labels is rejected because auxiliary helpers reproject uncapped logits.
Build boolean local audio visibility independently of the LM backend; return audio states only when features and their mask are present.
Reject unsupported vision Ulysses before tower computation, including on text-only peers of conditional-generation models retaining a vision tower. Use ulysses_size=1.
Under FSDP2, execute image vision, video vision, and audio in a fixed order; use live-dtype dummy forwards and zero-valued projected graph dependencies for missing modalities.
Port the wide-head fix and option-forwarding regression into the current attention/standard/flex adapter and tests/ops/attention suite. Use the current directory-based CI selection.
Validation
Current local environment after merging main 5040b347 (2026-10-23): PyTorch 2.11.0, Transformers 5.16.1, CPU.
Added public text/multimodal regressions for omitted/default-true and explicit-true caching on packed inputs, preserved unpacked caching, and rejection of supplied caches. The four automatic-cache cases failed before the fix and pass after patchgen regeneration.
The three asymmetric FSDP2 tests declare the same two-process accelerator plan used by their launcher. Synthetic two-CUDA-device collection and actual launch-plan validation confirm that all three reserve two cards and accept two-process launches. This is planner validation, not CUDA execution.
make quality, full patchgen --check, and branch whitespace checks pass. Generated modeling was regenerated from the patch config, not edited manually.
Existing CPU coverage retains audio output/gradient parity; softcapped/uncapped loss and callback behavior; generated child towers; eager/SDPA packed parity; bidirectional visibility; real HF/VeOmni Flash adapter and varlen dispatch up to stubbed vendor kernels; and uncapped auxiliary value/gradient tests.
Current-head A100 validation was completed on 2026-10-29: the three asymmetric BF16 FSDP2 cases, real wide-head Flex checks, supported-dimension FA2 probes, and official-checkpoint Flex training through length 2048 passed. The nine strict synthetic cross-backend failures were investigated with controlled references in the tests-only follow-up below; real FA3/FA4 execution remains pending. See the dated validation report below for exact scope, memory figures, and retained failures.
Usage
No new configuration fields. Softcapping materializes logits and may increase memory use.
Run the three asymmetric Gemma 4 cases on two CUDA GPUs and record results (2026-10-29, current head: 3 passed).
Complete the nine-case numerical-reference investigation and commit controlled CPU/CUDA regressions (2026-10-29).
Complete real FA3/FA4 hardware validation.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Gemma 4 support for text, image, video, and audio inputs, including model registration and checkpoint compatibility.
Added multimodal data processing, packed-sequence attention, and FSDP2 support for batches with missing modalities.
Improvements
Improved Gemma 4 loss handling, including softcapping and auxiliary outputs. Log-probability requests remain unsupported when softcapping is enabled.
Shared-KV configurations support non-reentrant gradient checkpointing; reentrant checkpointing is rejected.
Flex attention now defaults to one pipeline stage for head dimensions of 256 or greater, preserving explicitly configured stage counts.
Documentation
Added Gemma 4 setup, behavior, and validation notes.
2026-10-24 support clarification
Commit 28e88e04 documents the existing safe rejection of packed multimodal use_bidirectional_attention="vision" calls with mm_token_type_ids on Flash backends. Use eager/SDPA/FlexAttention for that custom vision-block visibility mask. This does not change runtime behavior. Targeted existing vision cases pass (5 tests), and the current combined CPU model/registry/Flex/loss suites pass 514 tests with 45 hardware cases skipped. make quality and whitespace checks pass. The two prior confirmed-fixed review threads are now resolved. Real GPU Flash and dual-GPU FSDP2 validation still requires CI approval.
2026-10-29 A100 validation of 28e88e04
Executed the unchanged PR revision 28e88e04389b0da332cd5aead827ca30cce4d88c on two NVIDIA A100 PCIe 40GB GPUs (SM80, PCIe/PHB, driver 595.71.05). Environment: Python 3.12.3, PyTorch 2.11.0+cu130, Transformers 5.16.1, repository-locked FA2 2.8.4 wheel. Installed with uv sync --frozen --extra gpu --dev.
Real BF16 Triton Flex packed full/sliding attention
12 standalone checks passed: head dimensions 256/512, lengths 128/512/2048, forward and Q/K/V gradients against math reference; relative gradient L2 approximately 0.24–0.30%
Identical captured Gemma QKV and upstream-gradient replay
4 checks passed, real FA2 and Flex, full/sliding, Gemma scaling=1, against FP32 math; gradient relative L2 below 0.65%
Real packed image+video+audio forward/backward
2 standalone checks passed, FA2/Flex versus SDPA, BF16; GPU-compatible toy vision head_dim=16, text head_dim=256
Official checkpoint layout audit
HF and generated VeOmni layouts identical; 1,951 matching checkpoint keys/shapes, only tied lm_head alias absent; 60 extra checkpoint KV-sharing keys are absent from both HF and VeOmni model layouts
Ruff quality and full PatchGen drift
Pass, all 32 generated configurations current
Official checkpoint: google/gemma-4-E2B-it, revision 3e22461f65e89153144f8adb70e3b8c2cc9845a7. The full conditional-generation model completed one optimizer step at each length below, on both ranks, with finite loss and all 988 participating parameter gradients finite. Setup: BF16 FSDP2, FlexAttention, non-reentrant gradient checkpointing, chunk_loss with chunk_size=128, SGD without momentum, batch size 1 per rank, two packed documents per sequence, synthetic text. Missing modalities executed dummy tower paths.

These are bounded training/memory smoke checks. They do not establish convergence, real multimodal checkpoint numerical parity, Adam optimizer memory, or longer-context capacity. Official E2B's 512-dimensional global heads were validated with Flex; FA2 probes used supported 256-dimensional text heads.
Original exploratory failures (investigated in the follow-up below): Additional strict random tiny-model cross-backend comparisons were not all green: 8 BF16 cases failed output/gradient tolerances; FP16 controls had 5 passes and 1 failing gradient comparison (FA2, length 512, one layer-norm gradient relative L2 10.51% versus an 8% threshold). No tolerance was relaxed. CPU BF16 eager/SDPA controls also diverged, and identical-QKV GPU replay passed; these observations suggest numerical conditioning in this synthetic configuration, but do not establish end-to-end BF16 numerical equivalence. Arbitrary end-to-end cross-backend BF16 equivalence is not claimed; the controlled diagnosis below separates upstream backend arithmetic, visibility and compiler-state effects.
Bidirectional Flash uses the pinned HF native window conversion and has a different boundary from inclusive dense/Flex masks; direct equality against a dense inclusive-window oracle is unsuitable for that path. The original toy vision head_dim=8 is unsupported by Triton Flex; the successful multimodal probe explicitly used head_dim=16. Original failed/invalid-fixture and interrupted exploratory logs were retained.
Real FA3/FA4 execution remains pending on Hopper/Blackwell hardware as applicable. Repository Actions approval is still a separate requirement. The extra probes above were standalone validation scripts, not new committed CI tests. No production source files were changed. Logs/scripts were copied locally and the AutoDL instance was shut down; the console confirmed the stopped state.
This update changes only tests, a test-only diagnostic and documentation. Production files under veomni/, including all generated modeling and attention/loss computation, are byte-for-byte unchanged from 28e88e04. No numerical tolerance was relaxed.
Added tests/models/test_gemma4_numerics.py (40 cases), tests/tools/gemma4_numerics.py, and tests/tools/diagnose_gemma4_numerics.py. The references freeze weights, buffers, inputs and shared K/V; distinguish native Flash and inclusive dense window endpoints; explicitly promote Q/K/V to FP32 inside MATH attention; use native HF with the same backend for full-model parity; and jointly replay four attention calls sharing two K/V leaf pairs. CUDA cases isolate compiler state, reject unfused-Flex warnings and use deterministic FA2 backward.
Attribution of all nine original failures
Original comparison
Diagnosis
BF16 Flex causal, L128
Wide-head cases exhausted Dynamo's recompile budget and switched the model to unfused math. Fixed-fixture experiment reproduces original max logit error 0.113769 after the wide warmup; reset restores cold logits and all parameter gradients bitwise. Isolated compiled case passes the original thresholds.
BF16 Flex causal, L512
Original reading was contaminated by the same compiler fallback; isolated compiled comparison still differs from low-precision SDPA (worst parameter gradient 37.13%). Native HF with the same compiled backend matches exactly; fixed-forward FP32 attention VJP control is 2.63%.
BF16 Flex bidirectional, L128
Compiler-state contamination; isolated compiled case passes the old thresholds (worst gradient 6.98%). Same-backend HF is exact.
BF16 Flex bidirectional, L512
Compiler-state contamination plus cross-backend low-precision forward trajectory differences; isolated worst gradient 37.46%, same-backend HF exact, fixed-forward VJP control 2.25%.
BF16 FA2 causal, L128
Low-precision cross-backend whole-model arithmetic: native HF reproduces the PR result exactly; fixed-forward FP32 attention VJP control 1.55%.
BF16 FA2 causal, L512
Same pattern: native HF exact; fixed-forward VJP control 2.23%.
BF16 FA2 bidirectional, L128
Different visibility contracts: configured window32 becomes effective W17; dense/Flex include distance17, native HF Flash uses radius16. Arithmetic differences remain after visibility alignment; native HF FA2 is exact.
BF16 FA2 bidirectional, L512
Same window-endpoint mismatch and residual low-precision arithmetic; native HF FA2 is exact.
FP16 FA2 causal, L512
Reproduced the original 10.51% layer0 post-FFN norm gradient difference. Full scan additionally finds layer1 q_norm 8.60% and k_norm 8.16% over the old 8% threshold. Native HF is exact; fixed-forward VJP control is 0.62%.
All nine saved-fixture comparisons against native HF with the same backend produced bitwise-equal logits, loss and every parameter gradient. Captured shared-K/V joint replay against FP32 MATH had worst gradient relative L2 0.31–0.74%. Preserving the actual forward exactly while replacing only attention backward with FP32 VJPs reduces worst parameter gradient differences to 0.62–2.63%. Together these controls localize the large remaining cross-backend discrepancies primarily to forward-rounding trajectories amplified by this untrained four-layer low-precision stress model. They do not establish arbitrary BF16 cross-backend equivalence or convergence.
The original broad standalone file was rerun and still reports 8 failed / 12 passed, so historical failures are retained rather than relabeled passing. The committed tests use explicit backend-specific contracts and controls. A BF16-vs-FP16 comparison must convert the same saved state; reinitializing in a different dtype with the same seed is not a controlled precision sweep.
Final validation
A100 GPU combined model/registry/Flex/channel-loss/loss-utils suites including new cases: 563 passed, 36 skipped.
Final standalone numerical suite, including unfused-fallback rejection: 40 passed.
CPU combined suite: 527 passed, 72 hardware cases skipped.
make quality, whitespace checks and all 32 PatchGen drift checks pass. Independent review verdict: safe.
Final source ASTs match GPU-tested sources. The previous three dual-GPU FSDP2 cases and official-checkpoint smoke checks above cover the identical unchanged production code; they were not unnecessarily rerun for this tests-only update.
Logs, scripts, nine serialized random fixtures and per-case JSON metrics were saved locally. The AutoDL instance was shut down after validation; the console confirmed 已关机 and SSH became unavailable.
Real FA3/FA4 validation remains pending on eligible hardware. This follow-up introduces no core computation changes.
2026-10-29 VLM entry and raw-data integration — 2f251757
Addresses review 5691048317. The missing position hook and unregistered transform were reproduced before the fix. The previous prepared-tensor checks did not cover this entry path.
Register the gemma4 transform, using the native Gemma4Processor and checkpoint chat template. Accept HF messages with inline media or source-preprocessed conversations with ordered sidecars. Retain native image/video/audio IDs, patch coordinates and token types. Derive assistant-only labels through HF's actual replacement offsets, honor per-turn loss_mask=0, and reject missing media, overlength samples and prefix-rewriting templates.
Add picklable model-owned position, collate-topology and ragged-audio hooks through PatchGen. Preserve packed-document boundaries, pad audio time axes with false masks, and pack independent video frames without changing their encoded features. The VLM data path rejects sequence parallelism explicitly.
Recognize Gemma4 vision_tower / audio_tower layout for freezing and visual learning-rate groups; pass the configured sequence budget into Gemma preprocessing. Existing Qwen paths retain their behavior.
Add 19 regressions under the existing data/trainer CI selections, including the real VLMTrainer constructor with real transform/collator/model execution; text/image/video/audio and mixed forward/backward; different audio lengths/counts and video frame counts; packed labels/positions and padding; multi-turn masking; source preprocessing; pickle round trips; and native-vs-packed video-feature equality.
Core computation constraint: existing generated modeling functions/methods are AST-identical to 02bac55d; generated modeling only gains the three data hooks and two helpers. No existing attention, loss, text/tower forward or kernel implementation was changed.

The unmodified tasks/train_vlm.py CLI completed two optimizer/training steps under two-rank BF16 FSDP2 and FlexAttention on two A100 PCIe 40GB GPUs. It read raw PNG/MP4/WAV files from JSONL through one real DataLoader worker per rank and packed two samples per rank. Global loss was 12.55 then 12.51, with finite reported gradient norms 26.94 / 27.31. The smoke uses small random model weights adapted to the official E2B processor/tokenizer/chat template; it does not repeat full pretrained E2B training or establish convergence. The initial server lacked FFmpeg shared libraries; installing that environment dependency enabled video/audio decoding without a source workaround.
All eight modified Python source files match the GPU-tested bytes. Logs, configurations and the deterministic CLI-fixture preparation script were saved locally. The server was shut down afterward and the AutoDL console confirmed 已关机.
Real FA3/FA4 coverage and full-checkpoint optimizer/convergence limits remain as documented above.
2026-10-29 update: main merge and shared-KV checkpoint guard
Merged upstream main a795260d in 7dac922f, resolving the VLM trainer conflicts while retaining recursive vision-tower discovery, parameter-identity optimizer grouping (including Gemma4's separate vision projector), and sequence-budget forwarding.
Reject reentrant gradient checkpointing when the text configuration has num_kv_shared_layers > 0. The PatchGen-owned public model hook covers text and conditional entry points, including direct calls and trainer/runtime setup. The error points to model.accelerator.gradient_checkpointing.enable_reentrant=False.
Preserve supported defaults, non-reentrant checkpointing, layer-selection stride, reentrant checkpointing without KV sharing, and disabled checkpointing. Empty kwargs or use_reentrant=None are also checked because they inherit PyTorch's reentrant default; omitted kwargs retain the pinned HF non-reentrant default.
Install VeOmni's global checkpoint function only after model validation succeeds, so rejected settings do not leave a global mutation.
Add 20 regression cases covering rejection before checkpoint flags/global state/FSDP setup change, supported defaults and stride, and logits/loss/all parameter gradients versus the same model without checkpointing. Tests extend the existing CI-collected Gemma4 module. Document the restriction in Gemma4 gradient checkpointing.
Computation scope: all 108 pre-existing generated Gemma4 functions/methods are AST-identical to 2f251757. The only added model method is the checkpoint configuration guard. Existing attention, loss, decoder/tower forwards and shared-KV computation remain unchanged.

The five distributed runtime smoke cases were attempted separately but could not initialize on this macOS host: PyTorch detects MPS while VeOmni has no supported NCCL/HCCL/CNCL backend here. Those cases are not counted as passing. No new GPU run was performed for this configuration-only update; earlier A100 validation above applies to its recorded historical commit.
Follow-up for review 5691639777
Commits 6740e22b and 141b1463 clarify causal versus bidirectional sliding visibility in the Gemma4 documentation and isolate the mocked wide-head Flex regression from ambient Ulysses state. The CPU test now explicitly reserves zero accelerator cards. Flex/Gemma4 module regressions: 337 passed, 45 skipped; both targeted cases also passed after adding the CPU launch plan. The original two failures under ambient Ulysses size 2 were reproduced before the isolation fix, and both cases now pass under sizes 1 and 2. Lint/format and independent review pass. Only documentation and the existing test were changed; runtime computation is unchanged.

Wide-Head Flex Attention
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Wide-head kernel options and tests veomni/ops/kernels/attention/standard/flex/__init__.py, tests/ops/attention/test_flex_attention.py
For Triton attention with head dimensions of at least 256, defaults num_stages to 1. Tests verify the default and preservation of an explicit value.
Merge readiness remains moderate because wide-head behavior outside Ampere and the intended A100 backward fix lack runtime regression coverage.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to c36c7
The change expands supported computation without an identified new externally reachable or privileged path. Failure recovery and some cached execution behavior remain only partially assessed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The attention-default change is broader than the new registrations: every caller of this adapter with sufficiently wide heads and no explicit stage count inherits it. The supplied BlockMask remains the source of visibility semantics; the change does not reconstruct or replace that mask.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — For the customized modeling path, configuration selects a registry factory, and the new factories select fixed classes rather than importing an architecture-supplied module name. The loader's dispatch and trust_remote_code handling are unchanged in the base-to-head comparison; this does not establish that arbitrary external configurations are trustworthy.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Default KV-sharing state is invocation-local, but explicitly supplied cache and shared-KV objects are passed through the decoder loop rather than copied. The inspected definition does not establish transactional rollback of those objects after a partial failure, so successful-call isolation should not be generalized to interruption, concurrent reuse, or recovery.

Hi @FoolPlayer@Coach257, could you please help review this Gemma 4 E2B integration when you have time?
It adds the PatchGen-based model backend, registry/config/CI coverage, and an Ampere FlexAttention fix for Gemma 4's 256-dim attention heads. I validated the full BF16 FSDP2 packed-training step on 2x A100 40GB at sequence length 2048, in addition to the model, registry, ops, PatchGen, and Ruff checks listed in the PR description. Thanks!
The current test uses CPU tensors and replaces flex_backend._flex_attention_forward with a fake. It checks only option forwarding. It cannot compile or execute the real forward and backward kernels.
Keep this forwarding test. Add a separate CUDA test with 256-wide Q/K/V tensors, without mocking _flex_attention_forward, and call backward() on the result. Place it under tests/ops so the existing GPU workflow runs it. That workflow currently selects L20 runners, so add an SM80/Ampere runner or job if Ampere coverage is required. Existing real FlexAttention tests cover head dimensions 16 and 128, not 256.
This is a missing regression test, not evidence of an established production kernel failure.

Heads-up on ordering: #1142 ([BREAKING][ops, model] refactor: replace OpSlot with VeomniOp) is planned to land before this PR, so please rebase onto main after it merges and build the kernel changes here on the new op registry.
Every kernel is a row registered with register_op(op, variant, impl, ..., requirement=..., requires=(...)), keyed by (op, variant, impl, device). The device is chosen with GpuKernelRequirement / NpuKernelRequirement / MluKernelRequirement.
Modeling code holds a handle: VeomniOp(op, variant, resolve_op_impl("<field>_implementation")). It does not read config fields or bind slots.
Kernels live under veomni/ops/kernels/<op>/<variant>/<impl>.py, with the rows in veomni/ops/kernels/<op>/__init__.py. Many files moved.
veomni/ops/kernels/attention/flex.py is now attention/standard/flex.py. tests/ops/test_fused_attention_contract.py is gone; attention tests live in tests/ops/attention/.
The Gemma 4 patch_gen should hold its ops as VeomniOp handles.

Codex review
Reviewed the full diff from 3a9f736 to 72f3376. Found three multimodal runtime defects and one channel-loss logging regression. No previous findings were supplied.
With FSDP2, a rank receiving text-only data skips the vision tower while a rank receiving images enters its parameter all-gathers. These towers contain separately sharded modules, so the ranks execute incompatible collective sequences and can hang or fail. The video and audio branches have the same problem. Add dummy forwards with zero-valued graph dependencies for missing modalities, as existing multimodal models do.
Evidence: Generated Gemma4PreTrainedModel._no_split_modules at generated/patched_modeling_gemma4_gpu.py:1564 includes vision and audio blocks. veomni/distributed/torch_parallelize.py:378 selects these modules and :733 calls fully_shard. The new forward has conditional tower calls without dummy branches.
[P1] [P1] Build a backend-independent boolean audio mask · open
The selected attention implementation propagates into audio_config, but the custom audio attention requires a dense boolean mask. With FlexAttention, valid audio inputs produce a BlockMask that cannot pass through the tensor-only conversion. Eager attention is also incorrect: its additive mask is interpreted through logical_not(), reversing visibility. Construct the audio mask independently of the language model's attention backend. The added audio tests omit the case where both features and their mask are present.
Evidence: Pinned Transformers 5.16.1 recursively propagates _attn_implementation to subconfigs. Generated patched_modeling_gemma4_gpu.py:2038 builds the backend-specific mask, :2047 invokes the dense converter, and :442 interprets the mask as boolean.
[P1] [P1] Adapt the vision tower before enabling Ulysses attention · open
With veomni_flex_attention_with_sp and ulysses_size greater than one, image/video forwards fail in vision mask construction. The inherited vision encoder supplies embeddings and a padding mask with the same sequence length P, while the registered mask builder requires a mask of length P * ulysses_size. Implement the vision sequence-parallel layout and corresponding feature redistribution, or explicitly reject this unsupported combination.
Evidence: Generated patched_modeling_gemma4_gpu.py:2101-2105 constructs matching-length embeddings and padding masks; :1139 passes them to create_bidirectional_mask. veomni/ops/kernels/attention/flex.py:66-72 rejects this layout under Ulysses.
[P2] [P2] Preserve channel-loss collection with softcapping · open
When final_logit_softcapping is configured, calling ForCausalLMLoss directly bypasses both loss interception points. Consequently, train.channel_loss.enable=True silently emits no per-channel losses or token counts, even with valid source metadata. Preserve an observable loss entry point while retaining eager computation on capped logits.
Evidence: ChannelLossComputer intercepts model.loss_function and veomni_causal_lm_loss._kernel in veomni/trainer/callbacks/channel_loss_callback.py:184-186 and :245-255. This fallback calls neither; step_totals stays empty and on_step_end returns at :1037-1038.

Hi @FoolPlayer@Coach257, I've addressed the audio, channel-loss, vision Ulysses, and FSDP dummy-forward findings in c36c7aa, with regression tests added. Local CPU checks pass; the three two-GPU FSDP cases are still pending. Could you please take another look when convenient? Thank you!
Add an SM80 regression test for the wide-head backward path.
This unit test correctly checks num_stages forwarding, but its CPU tensors and stubbed flex_backend._flex_attention_triton do not execute the Triton kernel. It cannot detect the Ampere backward failure that the production change is intended to prevent. Add a focused SM80 GPU case with head_dim >= 256 that runs both forward and backward.

resolve_flex_attention applies num_stages=1 to every Triton call with head_dim >= 256. This includes explicit Triton selections, FA4-ineligible paths, and non-NVIDIA devices. If this setting addresses Ampere shared-memory limits only, restrict it to the architectures covered by the tuning. Otherwise, document and validate the intended behavior on the other Triton paths.

[P2] Selecting gemma4 through tasks/train_vlm.py fails during setup: VLMTrainer calls a missing get_position_id_func(), and no gemma4 data transform is registered. The prepared-tensor tests bypass this path. Wire the model hook and Gemma-specific preprocessing/collation into the VLM path and add a trainer-initialization regression.

Fixed in 2f251757.
Added the picklable get_position_id_func() and model-owned packing hooks through PatchGen, and registered a Gemma4-specific transform using the native processor/chat template.
Raw HF-style messages and existing source-preprocessed conversations now retain native media token IDs, patch positions and assistant-only labels aligned through HF replacement offsets. Collation handles ragged audio, variable video frame counts and packed document boundaries. The VLM runtime also recognizes Gemma4's tower freezing and vision learning-rate groups.
Added 19 regressions, including the actual VLMTrainer constructor with real transform/collator/model execution, raw image/video/audio forward/backward, multi-turn masking, pickle round trips, packing and unsupported-SP rejection.
Validation: CPU combined suite 560 passed, 72 skipped; A100 combined suite 596 passed, 36 skipped; make quality and all 32 PatchGen drift checks pass. The unmodified tasks/train_vlm.py entry point also completed two BF16 FSDP2/FlexAttention training steps on two A100s, reading PNG/MP4/WAV files through one DataLoader worker per rank. This bounded CLI smoke uses small model weights with the official E2B processor/tokenizer/chat template, rather than full pretrained E2B weights. Losses were 12.55/12.51 with finite gradient norms.
Existing attention, loss and tower computation methods were left unchanged; AST comparison confirms that generated modeling only gained the data/position hooks. Usage and decoding dependencies are documented in docs/transformers_v5/gemma4.md.

@Coach257 Following up on your #1142 migration note: this PR now includes the post-refactor main (5040b347). Gemma4 uses an instance-local VeomniOp loss handle with resolve_op_impl, and the Flex change/regressions use the current attention/standard/flex/ and tests/ops/attention/ paths. No legacy slot/registry references remain in the Gemma4 integration.
The latest head, 2f251757, also connects the standard VLM training entry to native Gemma4 preprocessing/collation and adds 19 regressions. The trainer-initialization finding is addressed in this review reply.
The unmodified tasks/train_vlm.py completed two BF16 FSDP2/FlexAttention steps on two A100s using raw PNG/MP4/WAV inputs and real DataLoader workers. This bounded entry-path test uses small random model weights with the official E2B processor/tokenizer/chat template.
make quality and all 32 PatchGen drift checks pass. Existing attention/loss/tower computation methods are unchanged by the entry-path fix.

[P2] With all layers using reentrant checkpointing, shared_kv_states is populated under no_grad(). Shared layers then consume detached K/V captured in kwargs, silently dropping their gradient contributions to the producer projections. Reject enable_reentrant=True when KV sharing is enabled, or carry shared K/V through checkpoint tensor inputs/outputs and add a gradient-parity regression.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Addressed in 3158fc3a, after merging current main in 7dac922.
Reentrant checkpointing now raises at gradient_checkpointing_enable() whenever num_kv_shared_layers > 0, covering both text and conditional models and the trainer/runtime path. The error directs users to model.accelerator.gradient_checkpointing.enable_reentrant=False. Validation happens before checkpoint flags are changed; the shared setup also defers installing the global checkpoint function until validation succeeds.
Added 20 regression cases: rejection for explicit reentrant settings and PyTorch's empty/None defaults; supported non-reentrant/default/stride settings; disabled checkpointing; and logits, loss and every parameter gradient against no checkpointing for shared-KV/non-reentrant and no-sharing/reentrant models. The main CPU suite passed 877 tests (72 skipped), and full PatchGen plus lint/format checks passed. Existing Gemma4 computation methods remain AST-identical to the previous head; this only adds the configuration guard. No new GPU validation was claimed.
CI on this head: ReadTheDocs has passed. GPU/NPU and several other fork workflows currently report action_required; the GPU unit-test run has no jobs yet, so these workflows have not validated this commit. Could you check/approve those workflows? CodeRabbit is still running.

[P2] Verified in 141b1463: Gemma4PreTrainedModel.gradient_checkpointing_enable() rejects reentrant checkpointing with shared KV before changing flags, covering both public model families and implicit reentrant kwargs. The framework installs its global checkpoint implementation only after validation succeeds; supported modes have all-parameter gradient-parity regressions.

The guard landed in 3158fc3a: enabling reentrant checkpointing with num_kv_shared_layers > 0 now fails before checkpoint state is changed. The default non-reentrant mode remains supported. The 20 new regression cases cover rejected configurations, defaults, and logits/loss/all-parameter gradient parity for supported modes. Existing core attention, loss and shared-KV computation methods remain unchanged.

The GPU unit tests, NPU unit tests, and corresponding e2e workflows are still action_required, so accelerator CI has not validated this head yet. I will investigate any new review or CI findings.

The full conditional-generation model completed one optimizer step at each length below, on both ranks, with finite loss and all 988 participating parameter gradients finite. Setup: BF16 FSDP2, FlexAttention, non-reentrant gradient checkpointing,chunk_losswith chunk_size=128, SGD without momentum, batch size 1 per rank, two packed documents per sequence, synthetic text.

The references freeze weights, buffers, inputs and shared K/V; distinguish native Flash and inclusive dense window endpoints; explicitly promote Q/K/V to FP32 inside MATH attention; use native HF with the same backend for full-model parity; and jointly replay four attention calls sharing two K/V leaf pairs. CUDA cases isolate compiler state, reject unfused-Flex warnings and use deterministic FA2 backward.Attribution of all nine original failures

2026-10-29 VLM entry and raw-data integration —
2f251757Addresses review 5691048317. The missing position hook and unregistered transform were reproduced before the fix. The previous prepared-tensor checks did not cover this entry path.
gemma4transform, using the nativeGemma4Processorand checkpoint chat template. Accept HFmessageswith inline media or source-preprocessedconversationswith ordered sidecars. Retain native image/video/audio IDs, patch coordinates and token types. Derive assistant-only labels through HF's actual replacement offsets, honor per-turnloss_mask=0, and reject missing media, overlength samples and prefix-rewriting templates.vision_tower/audio_towerlayout for freezing and visual learning-rate groups; pass the configured sequence budget into Gemma preprocessing. Existing Qwen paths retain their behavior.VLMTrainerconstructor with real transform/collator/model execution; text/image/video/audio and mixed forward/backward; different audio lengths/counts and video frame counts; packed labels/positions and padding; multi-turn masking; source preprocessing; pickle round trips; and native-vs-packed video-feature equality.Core computation constraint: existing generated modeling functions/methods are AST-identical to
02bac55d; generated modeling only gains the three data hooks and two helpers. No existing attention, loss, text/tower forward or kernel implementation was changed. The unmodified
tasks/train_vlm.pyCLI completed two optimizer/training steps under two-rank BF16 FSDP2 and FlexAttention on two A100 PCIe 40GB GPUs.
Usage/data format and decoding requirements: Gemma4 VLM training data.
Real FA3/FA4 coverage and full-checkpoint optimizer/convergence limits remain as documented above.
2026-10-29 update: main merge and shared-KV checkpoint guard
Merged upstream main
a795260din7dac922f, resolving the VLM trainer conflicts while retaining recursive vision-tower discovery, parameter-identity optimizer grouping (including Gemma4's separate vision projector), and sequence-budget forwarding.Addressed the reentrant/shared-KV review in
3158fc3a:num_kv_shared_layers > 0. The PatchGen-owned public model hook covers text and conditional entry points, including direct calls and trainer/runtime setup. The error points tomodel.accelerator.gradient_checkpointing.enable_reentrant=False.use_reentrant=Noneare also checked because they inherit PyTorch's reentrant default; omitted kwargs retain the pinned HF non-reentrant default.Computation scope: all 108 pre-existing generated Gemma4 functions/methods are AST-identical to

6740e22band141b1463clarify causal versus bidirectional sliding visibility in the Gemma4 documentation and isolate the mocked wide-head Flex regression from ambient Ulysses state.
