suddenly need to select topic before replying to post (since 27.1xx)

hello,

with v27.171 on zulip mobile , i suddenly need to enter or choose topic on reply to every previous post, which differs from behaviour before and also differs from web-client behaviour, and which makes using zulip a pain in the ass on mobile now.

is this a bug or an intentional change ?

Thanks @devZer0 for pointing out the problem! This is indeed an intentional change, attempting so solve a different user experience problem, as reported in #4764. However, clearly it can also introduce unpleasant friction, as you describe. I kicked off a thread in our developer community to discuss possible solutions -- please feel free to join in! Hopefully we can figure out an approach that effectively addresses both #4764 and your concerns.
