@amilan17 @MKrieger29 Can the potential conflict be described? Dr. Luca Centurioni (PI of the GDP) may be able to offer additional clarifications to resolve any misunderstandings. The reassignment to FT2023-2 introduces significant delays that negatively impact the LDL's software development timeline for the GDP (e.g. WIS2.0).

Following email exchanges with LDL, it appears that the new required program correspond to a merge of GOOS/DBCP/ 'SIO DB' and 'AOML'. We (OceanOPS) then propose to:

  • Rename the program SIO DB to GDP (with the list of agencies and contacts as described in this issue). The program notation won't change: there shouldn't be major impact. @amilan17 @N-T-K
  • The AOML DB code will be deprecated because the AOML DB buoys would have to be moved to the GDP program. That means that a batch of platforms will be migrated from one program to another. @fstuerzl : How can will deal with this in OSCAR?

@MKrieger29 To clarify what was discussed over email, in which you were on copy to, a merge is not required and would greatly impact backwards compatibility.

  • Do not rename SIO DB to GDP. A new program is requested, please see the details above
  • Do not move observing facilities to the new GDP program
  • Do not deprecate AOML DB because it is not under our purview
    • To be clear, we have not and will not request actions that affect other programs not under our domain

Hi @anthoninlize, the following is preferred: "The Global Drifter Program (GDP) operated by SIO's Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory (LDL), funded by NOAA, maintaining a global array"
