Problem with Metamask Mobile

I have a Next app hosted on Netlify and when I tweak it to be equivalent to the Display Wallet Options of this example, on Metamask Mobile I see Injected (unsupported). Note I can use the Wallet Connect option successfully here.

When I run the same app locally using $ netlify dev and open a tunnel to the internet, the app works and I can see Metamask, which when clicked on connects to the wallet in Metamask Mobile.

I've been able to build a simple app using create-next-app which works as expected in Metamask Mobile in all dev environments, and I'm unable to share my app code so this is a bit of a long shot but I figured I'd post here in case someone has had similar problems.

The problem was my dev site was behind password protection 🤷‍♂️
